Quiddity - Thoughtful

Summary:

Abby wonders about punishment and the fairness of it in certain scenarios. Tony isn't prepared for where Abby's mind has gone.

Another dictionary.com word of the day drabble. This time from 12/30/2002 for the word quiddity.

quiddity[ kwid-i-tee ]
noun, plural quid·di·ties.
the quality that makes a thing what it is; the essential nature of a thing.
a trifling nicety of subtle distinction, as in argument.

Work Text:

"Does it make sense to punish psychopaths?" Abby wondered aloud.

"What do you mean, Abs?" Tony prodded.

"I mean isn't that punishing them for their quiddity? The thing that makes them them? Who are we to say that who they are isn't valid?"

"Whoa! Getting a little deep for me, Abs. Maybe you should discuss this with Ducky."

Abby hummed. "Maybe, but doesn't it just make you wonder when you think about it?"

Tony shuddered. "I try not to think about psychopaths. Getting into their heads for a case is bad enough. This?" Tony shuddered again. "I don't know what this is. What brought this to mind anyway?"

"Oh nothing. I was just thinking." Abby trailed off.

Notes:

The dictionary.com series has 10 stories already written for it after this one, so I will be posting at least 10 stories before I stop posting again. I'm hoping to get more stories written before then, so that I don't stop posting for a while. Wish me luck!
