Jim: Ah, your eyes are brown... and so beautiful...

Humphrey: I was wandering about the coulour of your eyes too, Jim...

Джим: ...твои карие глаза так красивы.

Хамфри: Мне тоже хотелось увидеть, какого цвета твои глаза, Джим...

Notes:

Хамфри как студент-классицист, не чуждый тайного романтизма в глубине души, наверное будет думать о своих отношениях с Джимом как о новой, более счастливой и современной версии союза Ахилла и Патрокла. А более простой парень Джим наверное скорее видит Хамфри как самую прекрасную, едва не загубленную войной, розу, которую он, заботливый садовник-любитель, смог выходить? Но если они попробуют поделиться своими ассоциациями, то не факт, что поймут друг друга?..
(Хамфри: Какая ещё роза?! Я Ахилл!
Джим: Греческие *братья по оружию* из тех старинных сказок, что ты так любишь? Смешные имена... И ты так же бы убивался, как он над Патроклом, если б я не вернулся? Я настолько тебе дорог? ;3 )

As a classics student with a romantic streak, Humphrey would probably view his relationship with Jim as a happier, more modern version of the bond between Achilles and Patroclus. Meanwhile, Jim, a simpler guy, probably sees Humphrey as a beautiful rose, nearly ruined by war, which he, a caring amateur gardener, managed to nurture back to life. But would they even understand each other if they tried to share their metaphors?..
Humphrey: What rose?! What are talking about? I’m Achilles!
Jim: Ah, yeah, those Greek *warrior buddies* pair from the old tales you love so much, again, i remember. Very funny names… And would you really grieve over me like that chap did for Patroclus if I didn’t come back? Do I mean that much to you? ;3

Хамфри даже немного шокирован и слегка уязвлён тем, что его до селе невидимый ему лейтенант оказался *настолько* красивым. Он-то собирался великодушно любить Джима, даже если тот окажется совершенно заурядным невзрачным лицом, доказывая [каким-то подразумеваемым] всем, что его зоркое сердце разглядело соулмэйта с нежной душой под грубой оболочкой... как в книгах о великой любви! (может, он даже пишет такую))
Хамфри: Это просто смешно. Я собирался любить тебя, каким бы некрасивым ты ни был, понимаешь? Я серьёзно! (Хватит смеяться)! Но это?! У тебя просто нет совести оказаться настолько сногсшибательно красивым! Я весьма раздосадован тем, что ты не предупредил меня заранее!
Джим: Ну прости, старина :3 (Да ты и сам ничего так!) Надеюсь, ты не собираешься теперь бросить меня из-за того, что я так отвратительно красив?
Хамфри: Что за глупости, это было бы слишком эмоциональной реакцией.

Humphrey is somewhat shocked and taken aback by the fact that his previously invisible lieutenant is so handsome. He had fully intended to love Jim magnanimously, even if he turned out to be completely plain and unremarkable, proving to the implied audience that his perceptive heart had recognised a kindred spirit beneath a rough exterior, just like in those great love stories. (Maybe he’s writing one himself.)
Humphrey: This is ridiculous. I was prepared to love you no matter how unattractive you were. Do you understand? I’m serious! (please stop laughing) But this?! You have absolutely no decency for being this handsome! I’m quite annoyed you didn’t warn me in advance!
Jim: Aw, sorry, old chap. You're not so bad yourself! Hope that you're not planning to ditch me just because I'm so disgustingly handsome?
Humphrey: Don't be absurd; that would be an overly emotional reaction.
