Tiger Times

Summary:

5+1 format of six times Atsushi Nakajima used his tiger form and what he used them for.

Notes:

Oh god I feel like a lot of this is OOC but I tried! There’s like... no fics with Atsushi using his tiger form so I decided to fix that and add one. So take this. I hope it suffices your tiger!Atsushi needs.

UPDATE/EDIT: It was brought to my attention that Dazai can’t actually turn off his ability and that tigers don’t purr. For the sake of the story, let’s pretend Dazai can, though. I really want him to pet Atsushi. And I edited a few things around after doing a bit of research myself to make the whole tiger-purr-thing more accurate.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

1 - Testing with Dazai Osamu.

It’s just to test if he can be a tiger and in control at the same time, and they test it in the courtyard of the dorms. Atsushi focuses, focuses, and he feels his instincts flood him, suddenly sounds are louder, smells flood his nose, and when he opens his eyes, he’s closer to the ground and his vision is sharper. He knows it works, because when he looks up at Dazai, his superior is watching him like a hawk.

But there’s no bloodlust or rage in Atsushi’s mind as he finds himself so excited, he can’t help but prance around Dazai, chuffing loudly and head butting against his legs, hearing Dazai chuckle at him.

He ends up letting Dazai pet him for a few minutes before Dazai nullifies his ability, and tells him with a grin that he’s set to go, but Atsushi knows already. Because this time, he remembers being a tiger. And he almost likes it, honestly.

2 - Fighting With Akutagawa Ryuunosuke.

He didn’t have a choice, and found himself suddenly dashing around Akutagawa, felt his body transform in the middle of a single step, and he was pounding over the ground, attacking the enemy agents without mercy.

It was that or risk them being critically injured, so he figured he’d take his chances, and let it go.

Faintly, he was aware of Rashoumon flashing around him, the two working as a coordinated team, driven fully by instinct and reflexive reactions. Rashoumon brushes through his fur multiple times, but it never hurts him as they fight together, and when the last agent falls, Atsushi turns around.

And Akutagawa… isn’t quite smiling. But he’s definitely smirking, and turns away with a swish of his dramatic black coat, leading the way back.

Transforming back into a human is as natural as can be, and Atsushi scrambles after his mission partner, grinning proudly to himself. And judging by the smug grin Dazai greets them with, he’s proud too.

3 - Comforting Kenji Miyazawa.

Kenji got news his mother died back in his village, and was rightfully distraught, sobbing and crying quietly at his desk, inconsolable.

That was, until Atsushi got up, transformed into his tiger form, and padded over, shoving his head into Kenji’s lap, remembering an offhand comment from Kenji about how much he’d love to pet a big cat some day.

Kenji’s sobbing got worse, but he slid to the floor, wrapping his arms around Atsushi’s fluffy form and running his hands through the thick, shiny fur. And he stopped crying soon after, just sitting there, running his hands over Atsushi’s back and shoulders, eventually lifting one of his paws to investigate and look closer at them, now fascinated and distracted.

Glancing over to Dazai and Kunikida, panicking at first when he realized Fukuzawa was watching them as well, Atsushi received three signs of encouragement.

Dazai gave him a grin and thumbs up, Kunikida nodded curtly, and Fukuzawa’s mouth formed a barely-there smile. But it was there, and Atsushi found himself letting out a pleased, slightly drawn out chuff, while Kenji gasped in delight, exclaiming a soft oooh, and you purr!

(He didn’t, but Kenji could believe that if he wanted to.)

4 - Holding Down Dazai Osamu.

It’s only a temporary fix while Chuuya Nakahara makes his way there, but Dazai got hit with an ability, and now he’s panicking, lashing out at anyone and everything that gets near him.

So Atsushi pads up to him in his tiger form, and throws himself into Dazai’s lap, holding him down while he screams and thrashes, before he half settles, hands sinking into Atsushi’s fur and grabbing on tight, breaths hitching and panicky.

Nervous, Atsushi begins making worried noises out of instinct, and Dazai starts to calm with it. So Atsushi keeps making soft noises, and Dazai stays calm… ish.

And when Chuuya arrives, Atsushi nods when Chuuya makes a “zip your mouth” gesture at him as Dazai launches into his arms, clinging and crying profusely. Quietly, the tiger left the room, slipping back into his human skin easy as could be and smiling reassuringly when Yosano bustles over to check on him for any injuries.

5 - Defending Akutagawa Gin

The assassin had fallen, injured, on a stealth mission they were on with Kunikida.

Kunikida told them to hide while he called for backup, rushing forward to fight their enemies. Only, more came from behind and began shooting.

Realizing that Gin was vulnerable, Atsushi did the only thing he could think of - he transformed into a tiger, and stood over the assassin. He snarled and roared at their assailants, never leaving his position over the Mafioso.

They made it out soon after, Gin in Kunikida’s arms while they ran, Atsushi clearing a way with his powerful paws and jaws as he cut down the armed enemy guards.

Racing to their evac point, and getting there, was endlessly relieving, and they were able to load Gin into the truck, Kunikida following after them, before Atsushi transformed back and jumped in, Dazai hitting the gas and speeding off into the night, asking if they had the intel.

Gin, weak, opened their hand, showing a USB stick.

Atsushi smiled. Mission successful. And, with Yosano at a close range, Gin was healed right there in the back seat.

Mission very successful.

+1 - Cuddling With Akutagawa Ryuunosuke.

“Jinko.”

It rolls off Akutagawa’s tongue, so fluid, and it always makes Atsushi look over at his black-clothed companion. He blinks at the rabid dog of the mafia, who speaks to him bluntly.

“Turn into your tiger and come here.”

Atsushi is confused, but he does as told, turning into his tiger form and walking over to Akutagawa, entirely shocked when Akutagawa’s hands suddenly rub behind his ears, scratch under his jaw gently, reducing him to a happily chuffing mess.

When he blinks his eyes sleepily, it’s then that he notices that there’s dried tear tracks down Akutagawa’s face. His heart twists for his companion and he nudges closer, headbutting Akutagawa’s chest gently. Akutagawa almost falls over, accidentally drawing Atsushi closer in the process of keeping himself sitting up on his futon.

Atsushi doesn’t mind, resting his head on Akutagawa’s head as the other’s hands rub through his fur, scratching here and smoothing down his fur with slow strokes there. It’s borderline therapeutic, and Atsushi lets himself chuff away while Akutagawa rubs behind his ear with one hand.

He doesn’t remember how once he realizes their situation, but Atsushi finds himself curled around Akutagawa, his tail wrapped around the blackette’s waist, Akutagawa clutching at his fur, about to fall asleep.

Watching him with bright blue eyes, Atsushi smiles best he can to himself. Akutagawa’s weight on his side is so comforting, so soothingly warm and calming. And he chuffs a little louder as, finally, Akutagawa’s eyes droop shut, falling fast asleep, content and safe.

Just like he deserves to be.

Notes:

I’d love some feedback! This is only my second work in the fandom, so please let me know if anyone was out of character so I can try to fix it!
