Steven Universe: Spinel Edition

Summary:

This is a "what if" story in which Spinel is a Crystal Gem from the beginning of Steven Universe. In this Alternate Universe, follow the adventures of Steven, the Crystal Gems, and a slightly different, but eerily familiar Spinel as they go about their lives in Beach City, catching corrupted Gems, and fighting against Homeworld.
[Since it will follow the plot of the show closely, the storytelling might end up skipping past any events that I feel would remain largely unchanged.]

Chapter Text

Prologue

4,500 Earth years ago, after the shattering of Pink Diamond; a message was sent out to every Colony in the universe. It was a grim message, full of anger and hatred; a message telling all gem-kind that Earth was now off limits. All gems were to evacuate immediately, and never return. The Earth was to be dealt with by the diamonds.

And somewhere in the universe, on a lone garden on a meteor out in the middle of space; the message was received by a curious Spinel stood on her own watching this message. Somewhere between the words “Pink Diamond Shattered,” and “Earth is off limits,” She decided not to listen.

Chapter 1

Corrupting Light

“Are you Rose Quartz,” a voice rang out from a lone ship standing in the sky.

“I am,” Rose answered, “What of it!?”

“This is a bad idea!” Garnet warned, but it was too late.

The strange gem smirked as she jumped to the ground to meet them.

“Well well well,” she said, stretching out her neck to bring it inches from the Crystal Gems’ faces, “Let me get a look at the grand army.

“A fusion?” She asked, narrowly avoiding Garnet’s grasp as she whirled her head around, “ Rose Quartz, ” She added gritting her teeth, “And whose this? Pink Diamond’s Pearl?”

The mysterious gem seemed to lose her composure a bit as her head sprang back towards her body, “O-of all the gems I would have expected… It had to be you didn’t it?”

Rose’s mouth was agape. It looked as though she wanted to say something, like it was just on the tip of her tongue, but instead she shut her mouth, and tightened her lips. Pearl saw this, and with a look of concern on her face she decided to say something in Rose’s stead.

“It can’t be,” Pearl uttered.

“Who?” Garnet asked, “Who is it?”

“Of course,” The gem said, glaring at Pearl “You wouldn’t tell them about me would you, traitor? But that’s okay… In a few moments, you won’t remember anyway.”

“You’re on an abandoned planet, love,” Garnet warned, “The Diamonds ordered an evacuation. Whatever revenge you’re after, it was foolish to come here!”

“Yes,” the gem answered in a sing-song melancholy voice, “And in a couple of hours this planet will be gone~ so sad~”

Rose raised an eyebrow.

“But when it goes,” she continued, “I’m going to make sure that you, and I, go along with it!”

Her eyes flashed red as she plucked a small device from her gemstone. She flicked a switch, and the device sprang open into some sort of energy scythe.

Rose had already drawn her sword by the time the scythe had extended, but when she laid her eyes on it there was a rush of silent panic. Garnet and Pearl each summoned their weapons, ready for a fight.

“We can take her!” Garnet said.

“No we can’t!” Rose exclaimed.

And before Garnet could even respond, Rose turned her sword around in a backhand grip, and thrust it behind her straight into Garnet’s chest.

“Oh,” Garnet said as she poofed and her gemstones fell to the ground.

“Wha-” Pearl began, as Rose swung her sword around and sliced through her.

Now, Rose stood alone with the strange gem standing before her.

“You recognize this, don’t ya?” The Gem snickered, slinging the scythe over her shoulder, “That was pretty noble of you, for a murderer… but now you’re alone! And there’s no way you’re going to stop me!

And with that she sprung forward at incredible speed, bounding straight past Rose, and striking from behind. Rose barely reacted in time to parry the strike before finding herself having to parry two more.

The Gem lifted her foot and kicked Rose away; who went sliding back on her feet. Rose didn’t lose her footing, and lunged forward with a thrust, but the gem flipped gracefully over her, and immediately put Rose on the defensive once more.

Rose retreated to move the fight away from the other gems, and forced the fight into a nearby forest; hoping to use the terrain to her advantage. Rose was most comfortable surrounded by nature. She knew the forest inside and out, but she didn’t account for the erratic fighting style of the other gem.

They fought for what felt like several minutes; some of which was Rose pressing her attack, but most were just Rose barely keeping up her guard. The gem stretched, swung, and sprang around the trees; mercilessly bombarding Rose with a flurry of strikes, until finally she managed to knock Rose’s sword away.

With one final punch, the gem threw Rose against a tree. Rose struggled to get up, but she was exhausted; beaten. An enlarged foot shot through the forest and pinned Rose to the ground. Followed soon after was the Gem, scythe raised for one final blow.

“Y’know,” the gem said, “I waited. I waited for three thousand years like a good little girl! Standing there, perfectly still; completely oblivious to the war. But you had to go and take her from me. You took this planet, this colony that she wanted for so long, and when that wasn’t enough for you, you had to go and kill my best friend!

“You made her leave me stranded on a planet for three thousand years, and then you killed her! Well guess what, ~Rose Quartz~  Now everyone gets to die!”

She began to swing her scythe in a final decisive blow.

“Spinel!” Rose screamed, “It’s me!”

The scythe stopped, inches from her neck. Spinel all but froze in place.

“Wh-what?” She asked.

“It’s me,” Rose answered, pushing herself onto her feet, “I’m alive… I… I’m sorry.”

“P-Pink?” Spinel asked.

“I’m so sorry,” Rose said, reaching out to Spinel.

“You,” Spinel choked up. Her voice began to crack as her whole body began to lose composure, “You left me there.”

“I’m,” Rose said, grasping onto the scythe, “So sorry…”

And with that, Rose ripped the scythe from Spinel’s hands, and sliced her in two without a moment’s hesitation. Now lay a heart shaped gemstone on the forest floor, and Rose reached out to bubble it, but then in that moment she stopped. She plucked up the gemstone off of the ground, tucked it between her breasts, and returned to her friends.

When she reached the valley where Spinel had landed, Ruby and Sapphire had already reformed.

Ruby marched up to her angrily; “Do you mind telling us-”

“Ruby!” Sapphire rang out.

“Oh,” Ruby said, “Right!”

Ruby took Sapphire’s hand, and they reformed into Garnet.

“Do you mind telling me ,” Garnet said, “What that was about?”

Pearl reformed next to them, with a sad and dejected demeanor. Rose pulled out the scythe and activated it.

“This is a rejuvenator,” Rose told them, “One hit from this, and you reset; back to how they made us. They liked to use it on other Roses.”

Then, Rose pulled the heart shaped gemstone out from her breasts and showed it to Garnet and Pearl.

“I…” She began, but suddenly they heard something in the distance. From the sky, a haunting melody began to resonate over the entire Earth; followed by a flash of light. Rose barely had enough time to throw up her shield…

Chapter 2: Best Friend Spinel

Notes:

I'm not too happy with how this turned out. Season 1 has proved to be a bit of a challenge. I wouldn't call it filler, but there are a lot of brief notes that don't make for an exciting or entirely different chapter than the episodes in the show. Next will be "Steven's Lion" and after that I think I'm going to skip ahead to "Mirror Gem." I want to try to get one chapter out every Friday. I hope you guys like it.

Chapter 2

Best Friend Spinel

“Gooooooood morning Steven!!” a bubbly and childish voice rang out.

Steven werily opened his eyes to see a cheerful pink gem grinning at him from the side of his bed. She had messy dark pink buns for hair that looked like they were supposed to be in the shape of hearts, with star barrettes in her hair. Above and below black marks like mascara that formed thin clown-like markings, elongated diamonds, with two dots, like teardrops, at the bottom; parallel to her nose.

She wore a pair of red suspenders which stretched over her white shirt, and fastened themselves to a pair of poofy pink shorts. Her shoulders were round bright pink poofs with stars on them, and her shoes were probably 10 sizes too big. Finally, her gem; an upside-down heart-shaped gem in the middle of her chest.

“Good morning Spinel,” Steven answered, “You’re awfully excited this morning… except you’re always excited…”

“Well, today I’m excited for a reason!” Spinel answered, “Come on! I’ve been waiting on you. You’re the only one that sleeps- well you and Amethyst.”

“Heeey,” Amethyst joked, “I’m a growing Gem.”

Spinel giggled, “Amethyst we don’t grow.”

“Well I can wish,” Amethyst laughed.

“Well,” Spinel said, “Steven’s up- you’re up right?- let’s go get those dullsville dweebs out of their rooms.” She winked at Amethyst, and the two ran off.

It had been somewhere near 3000 years since Spinel had shown up on Earth. Now, she was a Crystal gem, and Steven’s ‘best friend.’ In truth she adored Steven, possibly even more than she had adored Rose.

Ever since Steven started living with the gems, more honestly since he was born, Spinel had dedicated herself to watch after him. The other Gems would go on Gem missions, and protect the world, but Spinel was protecting a different world; Rose’s world… Steven’s World.

She may not have been a master of combat, but she was a master of video games, and tag, and keeping Steven alive. It was almost like keeping Steven company was what she was made for.

As Steven had grown, Spinel had to learn about personal space. She and Steven had several long talks about how she doesn’t have to follow him everywhere anymore, and it doesn’t mean he’s abandoning her; neither her nor Steven could survive with just each other. Other friends and family were important too.

This was a talk Rose had with her too. It was something she was getting better at. This last year, though hectic in the end, helped a lot.

Steven learned to summon his weapon, and Spinel learned to have faith in him.

They dug through Greg’s storage to find a laser light cannon and destroy a redeye. Spinel got really distracted in that storage unit, and Steven mentioned something about ADHD, but she got to be a rope and attach herself to a van… She did not like being a rope.

She and Steven went on their first mission together, and it was a failure, but Steven seemed to make huge strides.

There was also that time she had to stop him from creating a horrible fry monster… that was a traumatic image.

And to top it all off, Steven made a new friend; Connie. Perhaps 3000 years ago Spinel would have been jealous, but after all this time to adjust to the idea? Spinel had a positive feeling about Connie. Connie was a girl. Steven was a boy. Spinel had learned that the romantic pairing of humans was far more complicated than that, but it was a start. Steven seemed to act flustered whenever Connie was around. Connie seemed… like a person…

Even if Spinel was reading too much into this, she was a friend, and potentially a life long friend. Spinel was happy to see her around.

Today, Steven and the Gems were going to Fun Land to ride the new teacup ride.

That did not end well… But of course, you already know that story.

Chapter 3: Steven's Lion

Double release this week, because Chapter 2 felt kinda short

Chapter 3

Steven’s Lion

“Water,” Steven moaned as he crawled up a small sand dune, “So thirsty… Need water…”

“It’ll be safer if you stand up,” Pearl told him; her and the rest of the crystal gems walking around him.

“You don’t understand,” Steven said dramatically, “This is how you’re supposed to act in the desert!”

Spinel rolled her eyes, and lifted Steven off of the ground and onto her shoulder. The five looked ahead at a large pyramid only a little further off. Mystical sand-made structures rose and fell around it for no discernable reason.

“Is this it?” Steven asked.

“Yes Steven,” Garnet said, “The power in this treasure has turned aimless.”

“It’s building columns with no roofs,” Pearl added, “Stairs that go nowhere.”

“It looks fun!” Spinel said.

“Then what are we waiting for?” Amethyst asked, “Let’s roll on over!”

Amethyst jumped past Spinel and Pearl, and rolled down the miniature sand dune.

“That was a bit unnecessary,” Pearl told her.

Amethyst simply mimicked her.

“Excuse me!?” Pearl asked, but to her left Spinel was giggling, “Don’t encourage her!”

“S-sorry!” Spinel snickered.

There was a loud roar somewhere far off in the desert, which put Steven and Spinel on alert. The two looked to the others to ask what it was, but Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl didn’t seem to notice.

“Let’s just go already!” Amethyst shouted.

“It would be best if Steven stayed here, Spinel,” Garnet said, “He’s not as durable as us.”

“But what if something tries to eat me!?” Steven asked.

"Don't worry," Assured Garnet, "There's nothing out here that can hurt you."

“Maybe,” Spinel protested, pointing at the sun “But there’s something up there! Humans don’t do well in the heat, Garnet… and I’m pretty sure we heard something out there.”

“Spinel,” Garnet assured her, “There’s nothing out here for miles… except for the Desert Glass…”

Spinel huffed, “He could still overheat while we’re gone, ya know!”

“If it makes you feel better,” Garnet said, “You can wait here and watch over Steven. We should be able to handle this.”

Spinel smiled, and made a silly fake salute. “You can count on me!” She said.

Garnet ran off to catch up with Pearl and Amethyst, who had already gone ahead. Spinel carried Steven over to a pillar and set him down gently.

“Here,” Spinel said, reaching into her gem, “I brought some water… somewhere… I think… there it is!”

“Thanks, Spinel,” Steven said, “It’s so… desert…”

“I bet! I prefer dessert myself.”

“Heh,” Steven let out a small puff, “Too hot to laugh…”

“Well,” Spinel thought, “You wanna play a game or somethin’?”

At that moment there was another low rumble; a growl of some sort behind them.

“Wha?” They both said simultaneously. As Spinel turned around, she saw a large animal silhouette painted behind an adjacent pillar.

“Wussat!?” Spinel shouted. It looked towards them, and its eyes glowed, “Pussy cat!?”

“That’s no house cat,” Steven said, squinting, “Is that a… LION!?”

“Out here?” Spinel asked, “Why would a… oh boy, Steven hide!”

Steven jumped up, and ran behind the pillar. Spinel ran her hand up her arms like she was rolling up sleeves.

“Alright kitty kitty,” Spinel said, “You better not be some sort of Gem monster…”

“Good thing this pillar is here,” she heard Steven say from behind the pillar, right before it immediately sank into the sand. Spinel grunted, and gave the sky a look, as if she were cursing the irony of the universe.

The lion stepped forward, and Spinel could now see the pink hue of its fur.

“So you are a gem!” Spinel exclaimed, “Well you better not lay a tooth on Steven!”

The lion continued walking towards them.

“Last warning…”

The Lion huffed at her, and kept walking.

“Alright!” Spinel said, spinning up her fist, “I warned ya!”

Spinel leaped towards the lion; enlarging her fist to ten times its normal size. The lion let out a huge roar, and suddenly a glowing pink circle materialized in front of her. The circle engulfed Spinel, and then vanished along with her; leaving Steven all alone.

Steven gasped as the portal closed, and the lion started to step towards him.

“Don’t eat me!” he screamed, closing his eyes… but then? Nothing.

Steven opened one eye to see the lion lying lazily in the sand. Steven looked curiously at the lion. Slowly, he inched forward and put a hand on the lion’s muzzle.  The lion seemed to ease into it.

“You,” Steven said, “Just want attention?”

As the lion said nothing, and did nothing, Steven became more excited. He started petting, climbing, and complementing the lion. He went on an entire rant about always wanting a pet, and how he always thought it would be a much smaller pet.

“But I guess fate had other plans for Steven Universe,” he said, “And his best friend Lion!”

Somewhere, in the deepest depths of a rainforest, Spinel quivered.

“What the blazes was that?” she said, putting a hand on her chest, “It felt like… a sliver of my pride was ripped straight out of my gem…”

She looked around at the field of poofed corrupted gems around her.

“I sure hope Steven’s okay,” she said, “I sure hope there’s a warp pad around here…”

A few hours later, Spinel warped back to the temple, only to find it empty.

“Are they still not back yet?” she asked, “Oh no! Did the lion really eat Steven!?”

But before she could panic, she saw Amethyst asleep inside a pillow fort. Something strange was going on. Then, she heard Steven’s unmistakable giggle outside.

“Steven!” She shouted, and rushed outside, almost breaking the screen door, “Thank goodness you didn’t get-”

There was an awkward silence as Spinel found herself face to face with Lion once more. Steven looked at her, then back to Lion, then started to speak up.

“YOU!” Spinel shouted; charging at Lion before Steven could stop her, “I’ll get you this time! I’ll-”

And suddenly she had leaped right into another portal. This time, however, Spinel wasn’t taken very far.

Steven could hear a distant scream as he watched a tiny dot that he could only assume was Spinel fall into the ocean.

“Spinel!” Steven shouted, “Can you go get her?”

Lion huffed, and closed his eyes.

“Uhh,” Steven thought, “We’ll talk to her when she gets back then…”

When Spinel finally did get back; Steven had already thrown the Desert Glass onto the beach, and was in the process of trying to stop the sinister sandcastle from reforming in front of the temple. She started to literally spring into action; ready to jump to Steven’s aid and save him from a painful spiky death, but before she could do anything Lion rushed in to save the day.

She watched as Lion caught Steven, and helped him reach the Desert Glass. She watched as the duo plucked the Desert Glass from the sand, and the structures collapsed back into the beach that they knew.

“You should have bubbled it in the first place,” Pearl said to Amethyst.

“I forgot,” said Amethyst as she bubbled the Desert Glass.

Spinel wasn’t paying attention to them. She walked up to Steven, and his Lion, and looked Lion in the eyes.

“So,” she said, “He’s not trying to eat you?”

“Nope,” Steven said, “He was trying to protect us.”

“I guess,” she thought, “he’s a friendly lion then…”

“The best…”

Spinel nervously reached out a hand, and smiled at Lion.

“I’m sorry,” she said, “About attacking you without thinking… Err- wait, what am I doing? You don’t have hands…”

Lion looked at her hand, and pressed his nose against it.

Spinel blushed, and laughed nervously.

“Oh cool,” she said, “I made a friend… with a lion…”

“Best buds!” Steven yelled.

Spinel continued to laugh nervously.

Chapter 4: Mirror Gem

Chapter Text

“Yep! It’s all coming together!” Steven exclaimed as Pearl and Spinel carried in a random collection of school supplies. Spinel was overly excited, and wearing a form of human clothing she called a “School uniform.”

“So,” Pearl asked, “How do we begin this ‘school’?”

“Uhh,” Steven thought, “I don’t know… ah man why don’t I ever ask any follow up questions!?”

“Hmm!” Spinel thought, as she picked up a globe and spun it on its axis, “I dunno either. In most of the shows I watch they usually just sit around talking and dealing with teenage drama. It never actually shows any of the school activities. I think they’re supposed to be learning stuff?”

Spinel sat on top of the pile of supplies and began to fixate on the globe; trying to get it to spin as fast as she possibly could.

“Who will teach little Steven now!?” Steven yelled dramatically.

Pearl shot upright, stars in her eyes. “Teach you?” She asked, “Well why didn’t you tell me that’s what you wanted?”

“Oh you’ve done it now,” Spinel teased without looking away from the globe.

Pearl stood up, and found an open space in the room. She jumped with a “Hiya!” into a strange pose, and began making Bruce Lee noises as she focused on her gem.

“You know,” Spinel said, finally looking up, “She doesn’t actually have to do that… We just told her it was cool.”

From out of Pearl’s gem materialized an object; glowing and hard to recognize at first, but slowly taking shape into sort of mirror. It sailed through the air, and into Steven’s hands.

“We found this Gem-powered mirror at the galaxy warp,” Pearl told Steven, “It can display any event it’s witnessed in all of history! It will tell you anything you want to know about gem culture.”

“Wow!” Steven said, “I must be incredibly important to gem culture!”

“It’s not activated yet, Steven,” Pearl said, “That’s just your reflection. Here, let me see it.”

Pearl began asking the mirror different questions, but nothing happened. There were no magical displays, or sounds. It appeared to be but a simple mirror with a cracked gemstone inlaid on the back.

Despite this, Spinel had stopped playing with the globe almost immediately. She was staring, wide eyed, intently at the mirror, and at Pearl. She said nothing, but her face said more than enough; if only Steven or Pearl had looked up to see it. Something inside Spinel was horrified.

“Oh well,” Pearl said without looking up at Spinel, “I guess that’s the end of your school.”

Steven’s eyes lit up; “So I guess you could say school’s out for summer?”

“Yes Steven, there are many ways to say the same thing…”

“School’s out!” Steven cheered, and with that he rushed out the door, mirror in hand, and headed off to Beach City.

Spinel, still, said nothing. She watched Steven run off with the mirror, mouth agape, and though she wanted to stop him her voice completely failed her until he was well out of earshot.

“Hmm,” Pearl thought, “The asymmetry of this pile is really starting to bother me…”

“So…” Spinel said, finally finding her voice again, “You’re just not gonna tell him?”

Spinel glared down at Pearl from the top of the pile with a strange disappointed yet defeated look.

“Tell him what?” Pearl asked, pretending to be bewildered.

“You know what,” Spinel said in a monotone voice, “What that thing is. What’s inside of it.”

“He’s a child, Spinel,” Pearl argued, “He’s not ready.”

“Yeah?” Spinel asked, “That excuse won’t work forever, pal. Steven’s a smart kid, he’s been figuring things out on his own a lot better than you guys expected. ‘Sides why do you even have that? How could you hold onto it like that for… Who knows how long?”

“Well what was I supposed to do?” Pearl asked with a patronizing tone, “Free it? In it’s condition?”

She, ” Spinel corrected, “Could have been bubbled. Same treatment we gave every other gem. Maybe if she weren’t too far gone Steven could-- look, whatever, okay?

“When things go wrong,” Spinel continued, “And they will go wrong… I’ll be in my room. You have fun until then.”

Spinel jumped down, and strolled off towards the magical door. She stepped inside of her room, and if a magical door could slam it probably would have.

“Oh my,” Pearl said, slightly concerned, “I haven’t seen her act like that since Rose… eugh, It'll be fine.”

 ~

“Garnet wait!” Pearl yelled, “I’m sure he didn’t understand what he was doing!”

Spinel barged into the living room, globe in hand, and saw Garnet and Amethyst rushing out the door. Pearl was about to chase after them.

“What’s wrong!?” Spinel asked.

“I-- Steven-- Gem,” Pearl stuttered.

“Things went wrong?” She asked.

Pearl nodded.

“Ugh!” Spinel bolted towards the door, paused, ran back and put the globe on top of Pearl’s symmetrical tower, and then bolted out the door.

“Fan out!” Garnet said, but Spinel had already caught a glimpse of where Steven was going from the vantage point of the house.

As the other gems scattered to search for him, Spinel coiled herself up into a spring, and sprung herself towards the beach.

She landed just on the cliff edge above Steven, and slid down quietly behind some rocks. She could hear Steven talking to the mirror.

“Are you trying to say something?” He asked.

The gem spoke in multiple voices, like recordings; “Away from home… Let-- me-- out!”

“I don’t understand!” Steven said.

“STEVEEEEEN!” Pearl’s voice echoed from not too far off.

“Come on!” Steven yelled, “I wanna help you, what can I do!”

“The Gem!” Spinel called out, rushing towards him. As the mirror noticed her approach it shut off once more, but that didn’t matter now.

“Steven,” Spinel continued, “You have to remove the Gem!”

“Remove the gem!” The mirror repeated in her voice.

Steven turned the mirror around, and grasped the gem in his hand. He pulled with all of his might, and suddenly the tide waters began to gravitate around him; like he or the mirror were giving off some sort of magnetic pull against it.

Spinel backed away, and watched as the water formed a pattern similar to the lines on the front of the mirror. Before she had time to make sense of it, the Gem broke free into Steven’s hand, and the mirror shattered with a bang.

The Gem glowed, and Steven let go. It hovered away towards the ocean, and then with no time to spare, a body began to form. An ocean blue girl, with dark blue hair and a dark blue dress fell onto the beach.

Steven ran towards her, and gently reached out to see if she was okay.

The girl turned around, revealing the shining mirror-like circles she had for eyes, and spoke;

“Thank you,” she said, trying to stand up, “You didn’t-”

She stumbled a bit, and Steven had to help her stay on her feet.

“You actually talked to me,” she continued, “You helped me!”

She stood up completely, and smiled. “It’s ‘Steven,’ right?” She asked.

Steven nodded.

“I’m Lapis,” she said, “Lapis Lazuli… Are you really Crystal Gems?”

She looked up towards Spinel, who had slowly, and timidly, began to approach.

“Yeah!” Steven answered excitedly.

“Y-yeah,” Spinel answered less excitedly.

“But,” Lapis paused, “You set me free…”

“W-Huh?” Steven looked puzzled.

Spinel walked up and put her hand on Steven’s shoulder.

“Steven,” she began, “W-”

“STEVEN!” A stern voice shot through the air. It was Garnet. She, Pearl, and Amethyst had finally caught up, and they drew their weapons as they approached.

“Wait!” Steven yelled, running towards them, but before he or Spinel could do anything, Lapis spoke up behind them.

“You…” she said, “You four knew I was in there, and you didn’t do anything!”

A giant hand made of water rose from the ocean behind Lapis, as she stared coldly at the gems. Spinel knew that she had been included, but didn’t back away or even draw her weapon.

“Did you even wonder who I used to be!?” Lapis shouted, throwing the watery hand down at the three main gems; knocking Pearl and Amethyst aside, and trapping Garnet beneath its watery grip.

“Spinel!” Pearl shouted, “Save him!”

Spinel did nothing.

“What are you doing!?” Steven asked Lapis.

Lapis ignored him. She looked directly at Garnet and shouted, “I am Lapis Lazuli, and you can’t keep me trapped here anymore!!”

Steven looked back to Garnet, and then gave a confused look over to Spinel.

“They’re not gonna let us leave,” Lapis told him. She lifted a single hand, and the ocean parted behind her. She looked back to Steven and Spinel, and said, “Come with me!”

Spinel gave no reply, and instead looked towards Steven.

“Where?” Steven asked, still as confused as ever.

Lapis’ eyes lowered, “Home…”

“But,” Steven stammered, “But I…”

Lapis looked disappointed. She turned her gaze over to Spinel, who simply closed her eyes and shook her head. Lapis lowered her head for a moment.

“Fine,” she said, a little broken up, as she let the water drop back down.

By this point, Garnet had managed to grapple with the watery hand. She punched the hand off of her, and then smashed it away. She was angry; ready to charge Lapis and end this for good.

Spinel’s eyes opened once more.

As Garnet rushed forward, Spinel suddenly stepped between her and Lapis. Her hands were at her sides, and her head lowered. She looked up angrily at Garnet with fierce determined eyes; red eyes.

“Spinel!” Garnet scolded through clenched teeth, “Get out of the way!”

“No…”

“Don’t make me do this,” she threatened.

“Try me…”

“I’m not playing these games, Spinel.”

“Neither am I…” Spinel’s gem began to glow, as she reached one hand up and pulled out the tip of a long pole-weapon.

“Garnet?” Steven asked, “S-Spinel?”

“Don’t trust them Steven,” Lapis said; taking advantage of this moment, “Goodbye.”

And before things could escalate any further Lapis stepped into the ocean; making one final wave that knocked Steven and all of the Gems to the ground.

Steven and the Gems gathered themselves. As the tension calmed, Pearl ran up to Steven and hugged him.

“Steven!” she said, “Are you okay!?”

“Yeah,” Steven said, “So that was another Gem?”

There was a long silence. Spinel and Garnet shared a glance at each other as they stood back up.

Spinel reluctantly answered, "Yes."

Chapter 5: Ocean Gem

Chapter Text

The next morning; Spinel was arguing with the other Crystal Gems about grounding Steven.

“I’m grounded?” Steven asked.

“Of Course you’re grounded!” Pearl answered.

“You disobeyed a direct order!” Garnet added.

“He did what was right,” Spinel argued.

“Don’t start with me, Spinel,” Garnet warned.

Before another word was spoken, Greg burst through the door of the beach house; slightly winded.

“Uhh,” Greg huffed, “You guys better come check this out!”

Outside was a jarring sight indeed. The ocean was gone. Down where the beach once was, a crowd of townspeople had gathered and were speaking to one another about this strange occurrence. When the Crystal Gems arrived on the scene, Mayor Dewy recognized them immediately and asked what was going on.

“Obviously the ocean is gone,” answered Garnet.

That answer only caused more discourse as the townsfolk began to panic. It became clear that they wanted a more detailed answer, mostly because Mayor Dewy demanded one through his megaphone before Garnet swiped it away.

“It was Lapis Lazuli,” Garnet elaborated.

“Lapis Lazuli?” Steven asked.

“She’s the Gem you released from the mirror,” Pearl answered; creating a projection of Lapis out of her pearl.

“Yeah,” Steven said, “But she’s a gem just like us.”

Spinel put a hand on Steven’s shoulder. “There’s a lot you don’t know about Gems, Steven.” she said.

~

After dealing with the townsfolk as best they could, the Gems returned to the temple with Greg and Connie. They began to discuss what to do next, but before they could come up with a plan, Steven was already packing his backpack.

“Where are you going, Steven?” Connie asked.

“I’m leaving to fix this,” Steven said, “I’m the one who released Lapis. This is my responsibility. I’m gonna bring the ocean back, or get really thirsty trying…”

“Wait up, kiddo,” Greg said without any deliberation, “We’ll take my van.”

“I wanna help too,” said Connie, “Besides I feel weird being in your house without you.”

“Count me in,” said Spinel.

Lion roared in agreement.

Pearl cleared her throat, and the five of them looked over to Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst.

“Clearly,” Pearl said, “We’re coming too.”

“You’re ungrounded by the way,” added Garnet.

“Wohoo!” Screamed Amethyst, “Roadtrip!”

~

The journey across the ocean was a long one, and the van was cramped. Spinel was able to contort herself in whatever way she desired, but that didn’t necessarily make it any more comfortable.

At first, Spinel tried to fit on the back of Lion, but with Steven and Connie that didn’t work very well. Eventually Garnet retreated from the van to escape Greg’s taste in music. Spinel took her place in the front seat next to Greg.

Night fell, and the drive continued. Greg switched places with Pearl and fell asleep next to Amethyst in the back of the van. Garnet sat on top of the van, and Connie fell asleep against Steven’s back. Steven continued to ride Lion, who seemed no more tired than when the journey began.

They drove deeper into what was once the ocean; far enough below sea level that they were passing geysers and caves, and strange aquatic structures. Every once in a while they would ascend again, up mountainous sand dunes which were once the ocean floor.

The ascents were slow, and cautious, and in those ascents Steven took the opportunity to converse with the other Gems.

“I can’t believe Lapis would do this,” he said at one point, “Gems shouldn’t fight each other.”

Pearl and Spinel glanced at each other; Pearl a timid glance, and Spinel a reassuring one. It was the type of look that parents might give each other when it was time to give a child one of ‘the talks,’ and it seemed that Pearl was finally ready to accept it.

“We’re always fighting Gems, actually,” Pearl said.

“What?” Steven gasped.

“Oh…” Pearl hesitated, “How do I put this?”

“Not all Gems are good, Steven,” Spinel said.

“All those monsters we fight used to be just like us!” Amethyst interjected excitedly, “Right Spinel?”

“Yeah,” Spinel sighed, simultaneously petting Amethyst on the head and nudging her to calm down.

“But,” Pearl continued, “They’ve become corrupted- broken- we have to take care of them, subdue them, contain them… it’s all we can do for them… for now…”

“It’s what we should have done for Lapis,” Spinel added, “Let her rest in a bubble, not keep her trapped in that mirror for all these years.”

Pearl looked at Spinel, and then gave a deep sigh.

“You’re right,” she said, “It was wrong of me to just leave her like that…”

“But,” Steven thought, “Lapis doesn’t seem corrupted…”

“We’re here,” Garnet said, cutting the conversation short.

‘Here’ was a giant pillar of water, ascending into the clouds. It was about as wide as a house, and as the heroes stepped out of the van they could see that inside were all of the ocean critters. They stepped closer, and stood only meters away from the pillar.

“I don’t understand,” Pearl said, “What does she want with the ocean?”

“Maybe she’s tryin to reach something reaaaaaaaly high,” Spinel said.

“You shouldn’t be here!” Lapis’ voice rang out.

“She’s sensed us!” exclaimed Garnet.

Steven stepped up closer to the pillar.

“Lapis Lazuli!” he said, “It’s me, Steven!”

Suddenly, a giant face formed out of the water. It looked like Lapis, and its lips moved along to her voice.

“Go away!” she said, “Before I make you!”

“But we’re beach summer fun buddies!” Steven said.

“No!” Spinel yelled, doing an impression of Steven the way she had done in the mirror, “You’re one of them! One of the Crystal Gems!”

Garnet and Pearl started to step forward angrily, but Garnet and Spinel held them back.

“What do you mean?” Steven asked, “We’re all gems right? Just let us help you.”

“You don’t understand! Just leave me alone!”

The face vanished back into the pillar of water. Steven ran up and put his hands on the pillar.

“We’re not leaving!” he said, “Not until you give us back our ocean!”

A watery hand reached out and grabbed Steven by the collar. Steven was lifted into the air, and watched in shock as a familiar shape stepped out of the watery pillar. It was him; he was staring at a copy of himself made entirely out of water.

“I said leave!” Lapis yelled through this Steven clone; throwing Steven back towards the other gems.

Spinel caught Steven, and looked angrily at the water Steven.

From out of the pillar stepped four more water clones, one of each of the crystal gems; standing in a mirrored order.

The other three gems drew their weapons, as Spinel set Steven down and pulled at her arms like she was rolling up sleeves. A part of her mass rolled up, and then dropped down into her fists, enlarging them as she let go of her arms.

The mirror gems, in turn, materialized identical weapons.

“Stick together,” Garnet said, “Don’t let them seperate- OOF!”

As she was saying this, the Water Garnet lunged forward and punched her away. Garnet went flying back and out of the main fight. Water Garnet gave chase.

Meanwhile, Water Amethyst and Water Pearl pushed Amethyst and Pearl away to either side. Then there was only Spinel, and her and Steven’s respective water clones.

“Oh you wanna do it that way?” Spinel smiled, “Then come on!!”

Spinel stretched herself far away, and the water clone gave chase. The fight between Spinel and her water clone was more of a chase than a fight. They stretched and sprang all over the rocky plane. Every once in a while, Spinel would find an opening and make an attack before running a little bit more.

At one point, Spinel stretched herself around a rock, and whipped back like a rubber band; delivering a powerful punch with her giant fist. The water clone shattered into hundreds of tiny droplets, which levitated in the air. Spinel landed on one knee and smiled at her work.

Just then, the water droplets sprang back into a single mass. Without even reforming into Spinel’s shape; they snapped towards her like a rubber cannonball. Spinel barely managed to jump out of the way as the water smashed into the ground.

It followed through with more ground smashing attacks; bouncing towards Spinel like a slinky, as Spinel herself backflipped away in a similar slinky fashion. Eventually, it managed to trick her by stretching along the ground, and delivering a successful uppercut where she was about to land.

Spinel caught herself mid-air and landed on both feet. She watched as the Water Spinel reformed into her shape, and stared her down; hands at its side.

Frustrated; Spinel growled, and reached for her gem; beginning to pull out her gem weapon. As her gem glowed, however, she paused. She glanced back over to Steven, shook her head, and let go; causing the glowing light to dissipate without taking shape. There was no use in bringing that out if her mirror self would probably use it too.

Instead, Spinel lunged forward with another mighty punch; but Water Spinel grabbed her hand and threw her over itself. Spinel went flying through the air, and smashed into a rock.

It was around this time that Steven screamed; “I don’t wanna fight!”

There was a loud gong-like sound as water smashed against Steven’s shield. The Water clones seemed to vibrate along with the sound, and immediately splashed to the ground. Spinel’s in particular lost form mid-charge and ended up soaking her with a splash.

Everyone looked over as Steven walked back up to the pillar.

“Lapis,” he said, “I’m coming up to see you… so please don’t drown me…”

“Steven!” Connie yelled.

“Wait!” Yelled Spinel.

But Steven was already jumping into the pillar. Once he was fully inside of the pillar of water, a watery hand formed under him and lifted him away; out of sight of the other gems.

Spinel had to sit and wait as Steven talked things out with Lapis; unsure of what was going on up there. Steven then, of course, learned that Lapis’ gem was cracked and offered to heal it. He healed her and allowed her to fly off into space.

Then, down below, the group watched as the pillar of water began to crumble.

“We have to get out of here,” yelled Garnet.

“What about Steven!?” Shouted Greg.

Connie, Lion, and Spinel all looked at each other. Connie and Spinel both jumped onto Lion’s back, and held on as he got a running start.

“Just get us close!” Spinel said, “And I can catch him!”

Lion leaped through one of his portals, and suddenly they were miles above the Earth. Spinel darted her eyes around quickly, looking for any sign of Steven. Then, they began to fall, and Lion had to throw them through another portal.

They went through 3 different portals before Connie managed to point Steven out in the distance. Spinel wound herself up and sprang out to catch Steven in both arms. She then reached out with one of her arms, and pulled them back towards Lion.

The pillar collapsed. The water redispursed, and the ocean returned to beach city. A few moments later; a pink bubble breached the surface with Greg’s van and all of the heroes inside of it.

There was much cheering and celebrating. Eventually the rest of the townsfolk ran up to see Steven, and he was drawn away into the crowd along with Connie and Greg. Meanwhile, Garnet and Pearl stood alone staring at the sky.

“So,” Garnet said, “Lapis made it off planet.”

“What does this mean for us?” Pearl asked.

“We wait and see,” Said Garnet.

“I say good for her,” remarked Spinel, who was sitting atop the van only a few feet away.

“Spinel,” Garnet snapped, “If word gets out that we’re still-”

“We can’t hide forever, Garnet,” Spinel interrupted, “What about Lapis? She deserved this…”

Spinel looked off into space; as though if she looked hard enough she would eventually catch a glimpse of Lapis. She smiled.

Chapter 6: Warp Tour

Notes:

Not my best work, but at least it's done.

Chapter Text

Steven swore he saw something in the stream. He was so convinced that when Pearl, Garnet, and Spinel came to wake him in the morning, they found him asleep against the door with a water gun.

Pearl insisted that it was impossible, and so did Garnet. Spinel, however, wanted to hear him out.

“I’m confident that Pearl is right,” said Garnet, “But if it will make you feel better, we can go and check.”

And so they did. They checked every warp location possible, but turned up nothing. Pearl again insisted that, “Nothing on earth can use the warps except for us.”

To which Steven finally asked; “But what if it came from space?”

“I,” Pearl hesitated, “don’t appreciate your tone…”

They warped to the galaxy warp, where Pearl stepped forward to present her argument.

“These are the warps that connected us to other planets,” she said, “If someone tried to come here from space, it would be through here.”

“But wait ,” she patronized, “This warp pad is broken.”

“Pearl…” Spinel groaned softly.

“Marked inactive by the very sticker you placed here yourself!”

“Pearl!” Spinel said, “Stop bein a pill will ya? We get it. There’s no need to make him feel stupid!”

“I,” Pearl began, “Maybe you’re right… I’m sorry Steven… but it’s impossible.”

Garnet reached out and touched Steven on the shoulder, “We’re safe…”

“I… I guess…” Steven thought.

“Finally!” Amethyst said, “That took all day.”

“It was important to make Steven feel better,” Garnet said.

“Yes, Steven feels much better now…”

Spinel started to speak up again, but Steven beat her to it.

“I’m a little tired,” he said, “Of you guys telling me how I feel! I know I saw something in the stream.”

“And I know you didn’t!” Pearl argued.

“How could you know if you didn’t look?” Spinel piped up.

“We are looking,” Pearl said.

“Why can’t anyone just listen to Steven!”

“Everyone!” Garnet yelled, “... Let it go…”

They warped back to the house in silence. Once the other gems had left, Spinel approached Steven alone.

“Look,” she said, “I know you’re not over this… You need rest, I don’t. Get some sleep… I’ll be right here.”

“Thanks Spinel,” he said, climbing up to his bed.

Spinel sat up late into the night watching the warp pad, and fidgeting with Steven’s Gameboy, but as the night crept on; it felt like nothing was going to happen. She let out a huge sigh, and laid down on the floor.

Around this time, Amethyst stepped out from her room.

“Uhh, hey Spinel,” She said, “Watchya doin?”

“Contemplating my worth as a Pokemon master,” she answered.

“Err?”

“This game! I can’t beat the elite four!”

“Okay then?”

“What are you guys doing down there?” Steven yawned.

“Hey Steven! You’re awake!” Amethyst exclaimed, “Wanna see something cool?”

“Uhh,” Steven thought, “Sure?”

Steven jumped out of bed and followed Amethyst out of the house. Spinel watched them leave, and then looked back down at the gameboy. She sighed, and put the gameboy back into her gem.

“I guess there’s really nothing to worry about,” She said.

Spinel stood up, and started to walk over to her room, when suddenly something came crashing through the room and plowed into her face. Spinel fell to the ground, and a strange green orb rolled off of her face.

“What the-” She groaned, “What are you!?”

She looked up at the new hole in the ceiling; “You dropped in from space didn’t ya!?”

The strange orb sprouted legs, and turned around and darted suddenly towards the warp pad.

“Oh no ya don’t!” She said; leaping out and grabbing onto the orb. She paused; looking down at the warp pad, which she was only half-way on, and back to the orb that she was holding onto.

“Wait,” she said, “Maybe this wasn’t such a good id-”

But before she could finish; they were whisked away into the warp stream.

Within the stream, Spinel found herself surrounded by even more orbs.

“How many of you are there?” She asked, as they tried to push her out of the stream. Spinel dipped her head out to see tens of other streams all activated around her; “Oh… that many…”

She barely managed to hold on for the ride, and eventually fell flat on her face with a pile of the strange orbs. She jumped up, and started kicking a few of them away; eventually placing her foot on one to crush it. Then, she paused as she realized where she was; the galaxy warp.

She looked ahead to see nearly a hundred orbs shooting a strange goo onto the main galaxy warp. In seconds, the goo seeped into the cracks of the warp, and started to fuse into it; as if it were being repaired. In fact, that is exactly what was happening.

The warp activated, and Spinel quickly let her foot off of the orb, and slinked into a hiding spot. From the bright beam of light, a strange green gem appeared.

“Log date, 312,” she said, “this is Peridot performing Earth Hub maintenance check…”

Spinel hid there, alone, until Peridot noticed the sticker Steven had left; panicked, and warped away. With the orbs, referred to as Robonoids, inactive; Spinel slowly stepped out. She looked around timidly, and thought about what to do next.

She thought about telling the other gems; about how happy she was to tell them Steven was right. Then, she thought about their reaction, their panic, their fear… and about Lapis. Steven let Lapis go. She let Lapis go.

She took the robonoids, and threw them into the ocean. Then, she smashed the Galaxy Warp, and warped home. No one noticed that she was gone. No one noticed when she came back. No one needed to know…

Chapter 7: Short Break Update: NOT A HIATUS

Notes:

This will be deleted later

Chapter Text

Hey guys,

This will be deleted when chapter 7 comes out. Just wanted to post an update cus I like to be professional in everything that I write. There won't be any chapters for a few weeks.

This wasn't exactly my intent. I wanted to stay on top of it, but a lot of you probably know how depression is. Real life stuff, and stress from school got in the way, and I had to deal with that. I might disclose more on my blog, idk. Unfortunately I have plans through next week, and I won't be able to write. Just for the sake of being realistic, don't expect any new chapters until December. That said, feel free to hold me to that! I'm enjoying this series, and to be honest with all of you I might have it mapped out through season 6...

... Yes... I actually watched every single episode of Steven Universe and took notes on how Spinel would affect the plot. Every- single- episode... I'll probably share some of them at the end of each "season." Anyway, I'm seeing this through to the end, so don't worry!! We're just gonna have to wait a couple weeks for me to get back.

Love you all,

Tangent

Chapter 8: Missing Chapters: 7-12

Summary:

These are verbatim, my notes for the 6 chapters. I was having difficulty with them, so I decided to skip ahead.

Notes:

I'm sorry that it took me this long to come back. I can't promise that there won't be more Hiatuses like this, and Chapters are not going to be on a regular schedule for the time being, but this fic isn't dead, and it won't be. I'm still interested in seeing it to the end, but have no ideas for SU: Future.

I've been okay. I'm still alive. The Pandemic hit me pretty hard, but more in life progression than physically or emotionally. I was getting ready to move forward, and have been trapped in the same place. It took a toll on my ability to write or commit to projects, but I'm still trying to be active. I've been extremely excited about Jasper since I first conceived this fic, and now that I've decided to stop torturing myself with these chapters I've been unable to complete in 2 years, I hope that I'll have more drive to continue.

Jasper IS coming. But please be patient :)

At the very least, I'll one day release all the series notes, but I'm not ready to give this up yet

Chapter Text

Alone Together

Spinel's only appearance in this episode is in the beginning, where she's sitting on a stool watching Steven attempt to learn fusion. When asked by Steven why she doesn't participate, Spinel answers by saying: "Oh... I don't fuse..."

"Well why not?" Steven asks.

"There are some gems who just don't like fusion," Garnet explains.

"Spinel's just... against the idea of combining her consciousness with another person..." Pearl adds.

"I'm not against fusion, Pearl," Spinel replies angstily, "I just... look, fusion is different for everyone. It's its own unique kind of relationship. For me it's just not something I've ever been interested in. I mean maybe if I ever found the right gem, I might feel differently... but I'm not a "fusion for fusion sake" kinda gal. Need someone who resonates with my lightwaves, if you know what I'm sayin'..."

"Fusion is different for everyone, Steven," Garnet would assist after a long pause, "It is important that we respect those differences."

The Test

This one is vastly different. Spinel sabotages the test to be real, and when she’s found out, she lectures the Gems for not having confidence in Steven. Steven likely gets hurt, and this causes a rift between her and the other gems, but Spinel stands her ground that Steven is capable and they need to stop treating him like he’s fragile.

There is certainly regret in her actions, but she’s terrified about the drones that arrived before.

On The Run

Spinel would probably go with Steven and Amethyst. If given the opportunity, Spinel would say that her first memories are of earth, and that she doesn’t know where she came from. She and Amethyst have kind of bonded over being non-homeworld gems.

When Amethyst lashes out at Pearl, Spinel would hold Steven back and allow them to fight. In fact, she would give a dirty look to Pearl for hurting Amethyst’s feelings. She wouldn’t help in the fight, though, and Steven would still put an end to it.

When Amethyst runs back to her hole, Spinel would want to be the one to talk to her. It would take some convincing from Steven to let Pearl talk to her.

Horror Club

Spinel likes horror movies. I’m almost tempted to say that she replaces Steven entirely in this episode, but she’s at least present. Among the humans, Spinel goes by the name Nora...

Marble Madness

Same outcome. Spinel might be able to stop Steven from revealing their presence, and they may be able to hear more about the cluster.

Peridot wouldn’t find any working injectors. Nothing on earth is online anymore, which would mean she has to send more tech to earth to do anything… the gems would be forced to destroy the transmission for some reason.

At this point, Spinel would have to confess about the Robonoids she found at the galaxy warp. She explains how Steven was right, and why she had been trying so hard to “make sure Steven is ready.”

Rose’s scabbard

This is the site of chapter 1. It’s extremely obvious that being back at the battlefield invokes memories in Spinel. She also doesn’t seem very invested in the conversation about Rose, and doesn’t even react to Pearl’s outburst. This is strange, but the rest of the episode remains the same, and does not center around Spinel.

The Message

Spinel would be hanging out with Steven and Greg, and really invested the whole audio plot.

She seems to hang out with them a lot, and it appears as though she likes Lapis. She would also realize that the gems don’t just use audio anymore.

The plot would basically remain the same, but with Spinel supporting Steven and Greg the whole time.

Chapter 9: You all deserve this

Summary:

My unpublished notes for the fanfic.

Notes:

Hello everyone! It's been far too long. 5 years! A pretty hectic 5 years for all of us. I told myself if I didn't get back to this fanfic soon, I should publish these notes. I kept putting it off, because I kept trying to convince myself I would get back to this, but the truth is my life is chaos right now. I'm doing alright, no really, I am! I'm struggling financially, and battling with depression constantly, but I'm not a danger to myself.
I got engaged!
But I don't know when I'll come back to finish this fanfic. I've been working on my original manuscripts, and other things that I want to publish and make money at. The longer I've waited, the harder it's been for me to come back and write full chapters. I didn't want to share these notes because I wanted to be able to publish one chapter at a time and see the readers react to all of the reveals and plot twists as they happen, and if I come back to this... well this is the roadmap. The whole roadmap.
But I kept you all waiting for 5 years. I don't know how many readers will see this, but you deserve it. You deserve something... maybe by sharing this, the fandom can take my ideas and do some really creative things with them. I'm not an animator or an artist, just a storyteller.
I hope you enjoy this. I hope you're all doing well, and I always make a point to say I love you all because depression is hard and everyone needs to hear it sometimes. So I love you all. Please accept this gift. I will continue writing, but I don't know if I will ever finish writing all of SUSE. I hope this little bit is enough.

Steven Universe Spinel Edition Notes

Season 1

General rules

Spinel is extremely attached to Steven, and possibly the most social of the gems. She’s much more well known, and common, among the townsfolk.

She also follows Steven around everywhere, but has learned to respect his space by the time of Gem Glow. Her attachment to Steven mostly helps keep her from breaking the episodes.

She’s also reluctant to use her weapon unless Steven is in immediate danger; as she tries to force herself to maintain the image of a happy, playful, and relatively innocent gem.

Gem Glow

Spinel might be away from Steven in the beginning to help procure the cookie cats. She would not use her weapon in the opening fight against the baby centipedles as its not at all necessary.

When discussing summoning weapons, Spinel’s perspective comes from the idea of using her strong emotions. I’m not sure if she would weigh in, however. More likely saying “eh! Why summon a weapon when I can do this?” Growing her fist.

The gems would probably know that’s partial BS but Steven wouldn’t.

The centipedle fight concerns me. On one hand Spinel is an “end it quickly” type of gem, but she would probably be motivated to want Steven to figure out his shield. Maybe that’s what all of them were doing?

Laser Light Canon

Spinel would go with Steven and Amethyst for Bits. She would also go with Steven to find the canon, knowing she can’t destroy the red eye... but why can’t she or the gems? Volume 1 bothers me.

Spinel would slink her way around the storage unit, and she’s probably the rope they use to pull the canon out... I can also see her getting distracted and Steven having to remind her to focus on the mission. Getting the canon back would be easier, and she would probably save Greg’s van from floating off.

Cheeseburger Backpack

Spinel would probably take the mission seriously. She would swing Steven across instead of using his shirts... except again the other gems were testing him. The rest of the episode would be the same.

Together Breakfast

Honestly the only interesting thing I can think of for this is Spinel’s room... no ideas on that.

Frybo

“Steven no...”
-Spinel Probably

Cat Fingers

Spinel might be interested in talking about shapeshifting. The rest of the episode doesn’t quite work the same way with the rules I set for her personality. She might try to cut them off, which would be bad. Maybe if she panics and doesn’t know what to do?

Bubble Buddies

Spinel would not be involved any more than the other gems. Steven asked them not to get involved, so she wouldn’t get involved.

Serious Steven

Strawberry Battlefield is where I envision Spinel’s arrival on Earth. Garnet would probably insist on going with Steven, as he and Spinel are about as disastrous as Steven and Amethyst. Episode remains mostly the same.

Steven’s Lion

Spinel would refuse to leave Steven alone. I could imagine her attacking Lion only to be teleported away. She meets back up with everyone at the Temple. It’s possible she gets teleported away again, and then comes back to the finale where she sees that Lion is helping.

Arcade Mania

Spinel would get mad at Amethyst for getting Steven in trouble. I’m also 99% sure that Spinel works on the boardwalk... she’d probably hide any damage from Mr. Smiley.

When Steven returns for Garnet, he would find Spinel standing there watching her, until he points out the fight outside. She would keep getting distracted by Steven trying to snap Garnet out of it, and probably ask for a turn.

So many birthdays

Spinel celebrates birthdays, but I can’t think of any changes to make

Steven the Sword Fighter

In truth Spinel would always be happy to watch Pearl “get what she had coming,” and she’d probably stick around Steven so he’s not lonely. Steven, however, wants Pearl back. Spinel’s company won’t cut it. I’m pretty sure Spinel would never let him play with holo Pearl.

Beach Party

Spinel is probably better at human relations. I can see her lecturing Garnet to apologize about the sign... although they would still struggle to fix it.

Monster Buddies

Spinel would side with Garnet about letting Steven handle Centipedal.

Healing tears

Spinel would be help against the infestation of brambles, but I can’t think of any other interesting things to note.

Mirror Gem/Ocean Gem

Spinel is upset when she sees that Pearl had a gem mirror. She criticizes pearl for not being honest about what the mirror actually is. When Steven helps Lapis, Spinel actually stops the Gems from interfering.

She protests to Steven’s grounding, and fights alongside the crystal gems.

“So lapis made it off planet.”

“Good for her...” spinel walks off.

“What does this mean for us?”

Space Race

Spinel wouldn’t be in this episode but she would be furiousif she finds out.

Secret team

[For some reason, my recording of this episode plays Teen Titans Go. There are instances of this in other episodes, which I will note with “Titans Error” until I find another way to watch it.]

Warp Tour

Spinel would again take Steven’s side when he gets upset. She would stay up with him watching for the thing in the stream to appear. I’m conflicted about how she would react to Peridot. My first thought was that she would poof her quickly, and be done with it, but that means more writing to get to the season 1 finale.

Alone Together

Spinel gets to make a comment about how she doesn’t fuse. Mostly this is to keep me from having to make fusions, but it fits with her character in season 1.

Rose’s scabbard

This is the site of chapter 1. It’s extremely obvious that being back at the battlefield invokes memories in Spinel. She also doesn’t seem very invested in the conversation about Rose, and doesn’t even react to Pearl’s outburst.

The Message

Spinel would be hanging out with Steven and Greg, and really invested the whole audio plot.

She seems to hang out with them a lot, and it appears as though she likes Lapis. She would also realize that the gems don’t just use audio anymore.

Political Power

Spinel would be with the gems discussing the invasion, but she wouldn’t have the same incentive to shelter Steven. She would also insist that they just fight back. She calls herself “at least as strong as Garnet”

The Return

For the first time, Spinel agrees with making Steven leave; but it’s really that she agrees the mayor needs help. To her the entire world is in danger, if they fail Steven dies either way. She might go with him to protect him.

Spinel would jump into the fight without a second thought; attacking before they get a chance to fire the canon. She wouldn’t back down until she’s poofed. I need to figure out if they can beat Jasper or how Steven would reveal himself.

Jail Break

After being freed, Spinel would immediately be concerned about Garnet and Lapis. She would even run off to free Lapis when they get control of the bridge.

Jasper would have to beat down Spinel again when she grabs Lapis, and when they are imprisoned under the ocean, Spinel almost chases after them. Their similar history makes Spinel extremely attached to Lapis even though they’ve barely met.

Season 2

Story for Steven

Spinel would be alongside Rose at Greg’s concert. It’s also possible she is listening to the story with Steven, and adding some details from the Gems’ side. She might even get to say that Rose loves him too.

Shirt club

“You guys really don’t understand rock and roll or human culture, do you?” -Spinel probably

Love letters

No spinel

Reformed

No spinel

Sworn to the Sword

No change. Spinel has very different opinions of Rose, but it probably won’t come up.

Keeping it Together

Spinel shouldn’t make much difference in catching Peridot, for the sake of future episodes, but her rubber hose body would definitely help. When Peridot tries to fly away, Spinel would throw something at her, and probably miss.

I think Spinel would make the biggest change during the reveal of the cluster gems. While Garnet is paralyzed in fear, Spinel would act... rather violently. Garnet would split, since she doesn’t have to compose herself in order to survive. This would have huge consequences on the conversation, but Garnet’s turmoil is the same.

We need to talk

A Few things to note pertaining to the past; Spinel plays the bass. Spinel is pastel goth, but might still be playing the innocent child? (She hides her upside down form until well after Steven) Spinel stans Greg; she sees Rose growing attached instead of bored for possibly the first time in her life, and recognizes that he might not get abandoned like everyone else did.

Spinel can’t stand Pearl. She knows Pearl is jealous, and would be giving her a nasty look the entire time they fuse... but out of respect for Greg, she wouldn’t say anything until Pearl does.

When Pearl confronts Greg, it will 100% set Spinel off. When she calls Greg a novelty, Spinel would snap back at her. There’s no way around it; “Yes. Just like she gets bored with ALL of her toys. You’re a phase too. Don’t forget that.”

Spinel is the OG “just a phase.” A part of her is jealous, but she takes it out on Pearl. They are opposites cut from the same cloth. Watching Rose fall in love fuels Spinel.

Spinel would encourage Greg to try fusion, and even help teach him to dance.

When Rose laughs at Greg for trying to fuse, it will upset Spinel, but she won’t be surprised. It will feel inevitable... up to the point that Rose says “I’m not a real person.”

When Rose actually feels remorse... when Rose actually feels... Spinel is overcome with hope.

And when Pearl says “I think he’s her favorite too” Spinel can’t help but look like a smug b*tch.

Chille Tid

If Spinel is with them in the raft she’d be fishing.

Spinel would absolutely take a slumber pal. The rest of the episode would play out like normal.

Cry for Help

Spinel does not stan. Spinel would blow up at Pearl when she finds out.

Keystone Motel

No Spinel

Friend Ship

In the opening confrontation with Peridot, Pearl’s enthusiasm would annoy Spinel. They would probably mess up by getting in each other’s way.

Spinel has very little to say about Pearl’s attitude. When Pearl triggers the trap, Spinel easily catches Steven and Amethyst. She allows Pearl and Garnet to talk things out.... just like how Amethyst tries to use her whip to hold onto the gears and stop the walls in the trap, Spinel would try to grab them with her rubber hose body, and get stuck.

“Guyyys, I’m gonna pooof hurry uuuuup...”

Garnet telling Pearl that she controls her own destiny, not anyone else (name dropping Rose) would tug at Spinels heartstrings. She will want to talk to Pearl after this.

Spinel would grab Peridot, not Steven. The end result is the same.

Nightmare Hospital

While all of this is going on, Spinel and the other gems are probably fighting gem shards elsewhere.

Sadie’s song

Okay not a Spinel episode, but how would she NOT be in the show? Exactly.

Catch and Release

Spinel’s rage would get to show again. She might even poof Peridot before she gets a word in, but Steven would still want to know what she meant by earth being gone. Frankly Spinel would be curious too. She’s more like Steven than she is the other Gems.

By now she’s noticed that homeworld gems aren’t as comfortable talking when she’s around. They see her as a crystal gem... so she would help Steven get to the basement, but she probably wouldn’t stick around to chat. She’d laugh when Peridot runs into the other gems, though.

Spinel would share the blame for freeing Peridot, and surprisingly agree with Pearl about keeping her unbubbled.

When it Rains

Spinel would love to stay behind and play in the rain, but again; Peridot is more trusting of Steven. She’s probably hiding in the temple.

Steven’s demand is instead that Spinel gets to come with them, and since she seems mostly harmless Peridot agrees.

When Peridot presses the question of what Steven is, and asks him how hybrids are possible; Spinel answers that “humans are a mating species...”

Peridot, if she understands this, responds with “You mean to say that earth’s dominant life form reproduces through such a primitive- wait... gems can... DO that?” And immediately decides she doesn’t want to know any more.

Spinel protects them from the gem mutants, but the rest of the gems still show up.

Back to the Barn

Spinel would get to be the model instead of Steven.

At the barn, Spinel might have some guilty amusement while watching Peridot try to treat Pearl like a Pearl. She would jump in and defend Pearl eventually, especially since she’s trying to be nicer to Pearl at this point.

Spinel is just as excited as Steven to see the P’s compete. The rest of the episode turns out the same.

Too Far

Spinel really cares for Amethyst. I’ve been avoiding their relationship too much because I was worried about replacing Amethyst with Spinel in the beginning. Now I’m not sure how to write their dynamic and need to come back to it.

The Answer

Pre Spinel. Though I’d love to tell a story of Ruby and Sapphire being friends for much longer

Steven’s Birthday

Spinel would be able to hang up the banner easier. Steven would still get the same idea…

Spinel would be able to handle baby Steven about as well as Greg.

“Well today’s your Birthday!” Spinel shouted, “you’re finally a young adult… I think… Point is, I can finally say f-”

“NO YOU CAN’T!” Garnet shouted from the other room, “Three more years!”

“Farts…”

“Spinel!”

It could’ve been great

Pearl avoided looking at memories while in the moon base. Spinel likely had similar feelings seeing Pink’s murals. She would have a better understanding of what Rose was fighting for, and why she didn’t come back for her, but the others wouldn't know that yet. This might be the first time that Spinel gets protective of Rose’s memory. Seeing what Rose was protecting could have a huge effect on her... though she might not be at the point yet where Peridot’s words would anger her.

Steven remains the only one who notices Peridot sneaking off with the beacon.

Message Received

It would be hard to justify Spinel NOT poofing Peridot or destroying the beacon. This may be where the story is forced to deviate.

If we continue on the rails, then Spinel would have positive feelings towards Peridot for standing up to a Diamond.

Log Date 7 15 2

Honestly my favorite episode (or one of). Spinel would be trying to befriend Peridot, and they would probably have some great moments. I think she’ll end up watching Weathering Heights with Peridot and being closer to her than the main 3. Peridot discovering clothes might be a good time for Spinel to pull out her hoodie... she’s been obsessed with human clothes too.

Spinel would probably laugh at a lot of her antics... oh my god Spinel is just turning into Lapis. (She’s actually more complicated than that, but her experiences are causing similar decisions and traits).

“Pearl really tries for some reason and I can appreciate that!”

Spinel in the distance: “I hate it!”

I’m not sure if Spinel would attempt fusion with Perry in Garnet’s place. I don’t think so. Yes, I only said she doesn’t fuse to avoid the responsibility of coming up with fusions, but I feel like I should stick to that and say that Spinel isn’t interested. She can explain that she’s not against it, and supports Garnet, but fusion just doesn’t interest her. This would parallel asexuality in a way, but fusion isn’t sex... the message would stand though... she’s also not aromantic. I’ll give the fans Spinearl in the end unless I accidentally inspire another ship. [I accidentally sold myself on Spinel/Peridot/Lapis later]

Season 3

Super Watermelon Island

Spinel would want to rush off to save Lazuli, but I don’t know how helpful she could be. If she’s there, she would be able to grab Jasper when the quakes start to take her away.

Gem Drill

For the most part, Spinel isn’t involved. She does come back with the other gems, this time carrying Jasper AND Lapis

Same Old World

Spinel mentions that Lapis might not be too happy to wake up and see Jasper around, and maybe they should separate them.

While Spinel is moving Jasper, she awakens. Jasper would normally use that moment to escape; run off to fight another day, but Spinel is there to interrogate her… Spinel had plans to keep her from getting away.

Eventually Jasper says, “Wait… you… I… I recognize you.”

Spinel’s demeanor changes. Her eyes turn red. She begins to quiver, not in fear, but with… some other emotion.

“You’re-”

But before Jasper can say another word, Spinel draws her gem weapon, revealed to be a scythe, and poofs Jasper. She bubbles Jasper away, and whispers; “I’m nobody, pal.”

Spinel would probably be waiting for Lapis to wake up. She would try to befriend her, saying they’ve got a lot in common, and like Peridot, she’d probably try too hard.

I want Spinel to see Lapis’ story. I kind of want Spinel to respond by saying; “I wanna show you something...” but idk if they can reach the garden.

This could be the first time Steven learns about Pink Diamond, but not who she is to Rose.

Barn Mates

Maybe when Lapis says this isn’t gonna work, and Steven tries to help Perry, Spinel asks to go with Lapis. I don’t know if Lapis will have let Spiny in yet, but I’m imagining that Spiny ends up siding with Lapis and trying really hard to help both of them. Steven helps Perry, Spiny helps Lapis, and they’re working towards the same goal.

The card would make Spinny facepalm. The pool and recorder, she might be indifferent on.

When Lapis tells Perry to leave, Spiny would probably get angry at Lapis and start to walk off before the Ruby ship shows up.

Lapis would still save them. Spinny probably ships it…

I will now refer to the trio as Lappy, Perry, and Spinny.... LPS... Laps… OR PLS: Please… or SLP: Slip… I’ve accidentally created a new ship...

Hit the Diamond

Spinny has the same attitude as Lappy here. They’re basically goth buds…

Spinel’s human disguise is a giant hoodie, and her human name is... Nora...

Garnet would still mess it all up.

Steven Floats

I don’t THINK Spinel can pull him down?

Too short to ride

Spinel is probably working at Fun land.

When they try to stretch out Peridot, Spinel asks them to, “Please stop hurting my best friend”

“I thought I was your best friend” (I don't remember who I was going to have say this)

“You’re all my best friends...”

Monster Reunion

Spinel’s pretty nonchalant about poofing gems at this point, but she would take Steven’s side. She might also act shocked when Steven manages to open the door.

Alone at Sea

Spiny really likes Lappy, so she’s definitely here... also if I could draw... spinel Steamboat Willy reference... yes. Spiny fishing would be funny. She’d probably help Lappy get into it.

Instead of being attacked by Jasper while at sea, Lapis has a great time; but she talks about how she misses Jasper, even now. How she spent so much time that she’s developed this strange unhealthy attachment.

She eventually talks Spinel into taking her to the temple basement, though Spinel is extremely uncomfortable by the idea. Jasper wants both of them. She wants Lapis to fuse, she longs for it. She misses the power. She also asks Spinel why she’s working with Rose Quartz; the gem that betrayed their diamond.

Spinel plays dumb, and Lapis says maybe this was a bad idea.

Jasper sets her attention back on Lapis, but Lapis refuses to fuse again. She’s changed her mind about all of this. Spinel backs her up, and the two fight Jasper. Jasper tries to escape, and Lapis has an opportunity to poof her, but she hesitates. Jasper escapes, this time with two bubbled gems.

Greg the Babysitter

Spinel learns about babies!

Gem Hunt

Jasper still gets the snow Gems.

Crack the Whip

This is an important episode for Amethyst. I don’t want to overstep with Spinel.

Bismuth

Spinel might recognize the “Rose betrayed me” look.

She would be as suspicious as Amethyst, but Bismuth wouldn’t win her over easily. Spinel is good at faking content.

She agrees that Steven could be better than Rose... but she would not agree with the Breaking Point. Yes, she’s no stranger to wanting to shatter out of anger, but she backs down. She understands the morality of it.

I could see Spinel sneaking down to listen to the part where Bismuth accuses Steven of lying. That’s familiar to her... but she knows Steven isn’t Rose. This is a huge moment for Steven, but there’s no way to keep Spinel from defending him. Maybe Steven stops her from shattering Bismuth, but Bismuth pushes her away and Steven is still forced to use the sword.

Maybe this is the moment when Spinel starts to see she can let her guard down. She’s not alone...

Beta/Earthlings

In this reality, Jasper isn’t at the Kindergarten when Amethyst and Steven go to check it out.

Back to the moon/bubbled

When the Rubies return looking for Jasper, they find the real one. With the knowledge of where the temple is, Jasper is able to defeat and capture the crystal gems except for Lapis, Spinel, Peridot, Amethyst, and Steven.

Jasper gets the upper hand, but instead of taking them back to homeworld she tells the Rubies to stop at moon base. She wants to “Show Spinel something.”

“Well,” Jasper asks, “Does this look familiar? It’s her… It’s our diamond… your diamond. Pink Diamond.”

“I,” Spinel hesitates, “I don’t know what you’re talking about…”

“You have to know,” Jasper insists, “Heck, the last time I saw you; you were headed down to Earth yourself. We warned you about the quarantine but you just took a ship and flew off.”

“No,” Spinel replies, “I-I… my first memories are of Rose Quartz, of earth…”

“But that doesn’t make sense. I saw you, I know it was you. The gem was in the same place, same position. You were carrying a… rejuvenator…”

Jasper stopped. She looked at Spinel with clenched fists, “You crystal gems disgust me… you wiped her memory, didn’t you? Didn’t you!? And then you just manipulated her into working for you!”

“Wh-what?” Steven asked.

“Spinel,” Jasper continued, “These crystal gems wiped your memory. Rose Quartz isn’t your friend, she’s your enemy. She betrayed your diamond, shattered your diamond!”

“No,” Steven said, “No that can’t be right.”

“I saw it with my own eye!” Eyeball answered, “I was there! I watched as Rose Quartz shattered her!”

“No… she would never… mom would never…”

“Spinel,” Jasper said, “You have to believe us. These gems lied to you. Rose Quartz lied to you. She’s a monster. Come with us back to homeworld. Come home…”

Jasper extended a hand and looked at Spinel. Garnet and Pearl looked at themselves in horror. Pearl had her hand over her mouth; crying. Spinel looked back at them. She looked at Pearl… and then she frowned an angry frown.

She turned away and reached out, slowly, hesitantly. Everyone let out a breath, but there was no stopping it. Spinel took Jasper’s hand; her eyes a crimson red.

“No…” Spinel said coldly; and suddenly Jasper was flying through the air. Spinel had taken her and thrown her across the room. Jasper smashed against a wall, and fell to the ground. As she looked up, she saw a different Spinel than she had seen a moment ago.

Spinel was glowing, as if reforming. She seemed to stand taller. Her hair fell out of their buns, and into messy pigtails.

“You wanna know my past?” Spinel asked, “You wanna know how I remember my diamond?”

“I wasn’t her soldier,” she continued, “I wasn’t her servant, or her pilot, or her ruby guard… I was her friend. I was made to be her friend! I never fought in any gem war, and I’ll tell you why; because for 3000 years I was standing on a meteorite in the middle of nowhere space!

“I was abandoned! Cast aside! Forgotten, for 3000 years!”

Lapis’ eyes widened as she heard these words. Spinel continued.

“It wasn’t Rose who used me. It wasn’t Rose who manipulated me… it was Pink. Your precious diamond! The only person Pink ever cared about was herself, and she would have abandoned you too. She would have done anything to get what she wanted!”

Spinel was finished reforming. She now stood there with black whisker-like mascara smudges on her face, and a dark black top instead of her old white one. Her eyes were a haunting pinkish-red.

“You see, Jasper, I’m glad Pink is gone,” Spinel plucked a crimson bladed scythe from her gem, “And as far as I’m concerned, you can all go with her!”

That’s right I know the story, no longer have to pretend...♫

Gee it’s swell to finally beat her other gems...♫

Spinel gets reckless. Eventually she opens the airlock and says, “Let’s see how you like being stranded in space!”

She kicks Jasper out of the airlock, and Steven and the rubies go flying off with her.

When Steven asks if Rose really shattered Pink, and Garnet responds that she did what she had to, Spinel responds; “Yeah? Well look where it got us…”

[Addendum: actually, even though I think Steven’s interaction with eyeball is important, I’m listening to red like roses right now and I can totally imagine that Jasper fuses with the rubies, and in response, Spinel fuses with Lapis.

Spinel jettisons the Jasper/ruby fusion out of the moon base, and grabs Lapis mid air. The crystal gems save Steven, and Spinel and Lapis fuse. They have an epic fusion battle on the moon, ending with Jasper and the rubies being thrown into space and maybe breaking the door so Steven still gets thrown out.]

Season 4

The Kindergarten Kid

Beta and Earthlings are placed here, followed by Kindergarten Kid

Buddy’s Book

No ideas

Zoltron

Spinel probably knew them both. She’ll be hanging around in the background.

Last one out of beach city

Spinel goes with them to the concert. She spots Mystery Girl first, and knows EXACTLY what’s about to happen.

Spinel is a shipper. She stans...

As for Pearl breaking the law? This is how she can win respect with Spinel. Spinel’s frustration with Pearl stems from her obsession with Rose, and how she lets those feelings control her every action. Pearl making attempts to move on (even if it was because MG looked like Rose) and taking control of her own destiny; Pearl acting like herself instead of like Rose’s Pearl, would literally put a smile on Spinel’s face, even if Pearl doesn’t notice it.

When Pearl goes to talk to MG, Spinel puts her hand over Amethyst’s mouth, and watches. She actually gives a patented Garnet smile.

Starring Pearl as Repressed Nerd, Amethyst as Ultimate Wingman, Steven as Voice of Reason, Spinel as Goth Rival, and introducing MG as herself.

Gem Harvest

I appreciate that this episode exists, but watching Andy be Andy makes me uncomfortable, and I'm not sure I could write a Spinel Edition of this one.

Three gems and a baby

The falling out between Spinel and Rose, and the time she spent with humans like Greg, made it easier for her to understand Steven. That’s kind of the core of how I wrote this. “I promise I’ll love Steven.”

Spinel had no interest in getting Rose back. The Gems would have had to get him away from Spinel to kidnap him, which they probably did very easily.

Their part would go about the same, but I have this image in my head of Spinel landing on the hood of the van with her angry eyes, and elongated body, and growling like a feral tiger.

The new crystal gems

Unsure

Storm in the room

Good time for some Spinel exposition? I’m not sure if Steven would even go in the room, or just talk to Spinel. I do think that in this version of reality, that Spinel should get to tell him; “Steven... I have a lot of... opinions... about your mom. You know I do... but out of all the things she did; having you was the most selfless. She wanted you to exist. Not to run from her problems, but because she loved you. She loved you Steven...”

Room for Ruby

I don’t think Spinel would approve, or agree as easily as Lapis. For the most part Lapis and Spinel are on the same page. Spinny would only be comfortable because she has confidence she could take out Navy pretty easily. Lapis’ issues with herself would distract Spinel enough to let them give Navy the ship. Spinny would not be surprised by the turn of events.

Lion 4

I don’t THINK Spinel is in this episode? Steven might address that Spinel sometimes called herself Nora. She would be really embarrassed to admit that’s where she got the name.

This conversation means a lot to Spinel, but I’m not sure she’ll be there?

Doug out

If Spinel works at Funland, Would Smiley even call his security? Would he even have security? Maybe he’d have to call them... kinda wanna give Doug a gun just to have Spinel say the f word. I will refrain.

Also Spinel just appears in the car because she’s also trying to catch this intruder.

Spinel’s presence would really mess up Aquamarine’s plans. I don’t know who would win in a fight, but she works there. She would be on the property whenever she wants. Even if she believes that it’s Onion, which she wouldn’t, Spinel would probably say she’s staying behind for a bit to fix the damage, and stuff. She would inevitably get in a fight with Aqua and Topaz to protect Onion. For now I’ll say she gets poofed and bubbled on Aquamarine’s ship, might retcon that in later notes.

Are you my dad?

Spinel would be included in the list of missing people. When Steven goes to Fun Land, Smiley asks about the stake out. Steven says something like “didn’t Spinel tell you?” To which Smiley would say that he hasn’t seen her in days, and he just assumed she was doing Gem stuff. Steven would have to check with Lappy and Perry, but Aquamarine approaches him at Fun Land.

When they confront Aquamarine, Steven would ask what happened to Spinel. Aquamarine would either ignore him or say she “took care” of that nuisance.

If Spinel weren’t missing, she would go with Amethyst. No need to send the two strongest gems together.

I am my mom

Spinel’s Gem is bubbled on the ship. This creates options for the future. Spinel might be freed and still lose, or not be freed at all; leaving her on the ship to homeworld.

Spinel might be thrown off the ship with everyone else as a gem or reformed...

Or at the worst: Spinel convinces Aquamarine that she’s Rose Quartz. That doesn’t quite work though.

I don’t see how Spinel will survive on homeworld, but if she doesn’t go the episodes remain the same, so I shall take notes as though she’s bubbled on the ship.

Season 5

[Taking notes as if Spinel was on the ship.]

The Trial

The only way Spinel survives this is if they want to put her on trial and wipe her memory. She belonged to Pink. Eyeball can testify that her memory was wiped. That’s the only thing saving her.

They would have Spinel in the trial, and she would want to tell Steven that Rose didn’t do it. She wouldn’t be able to say much, though. Yellow is too angry to allow outbursts.

Spinel would help them escape. The issue here is that I see her as struggling with violent outbursts. It would take all of her strength not to just attack the diamonds. It would be easy for her to get herself shattered. Maybe they put some sort of suppressing collar on her.

Off Colors

Spinel would be unable to help, and she’d hate it. She could get them to the surface, but that’s suicide. They’d have to hide with the off colors.

Spinel would be pretty useful avoiding the scanners, actually, with her stretching powers, but I imagine Lars would still get Pinked in the end... because I feel like the fans would hate it if we didn’t get Lars of the Stars.

Lars’ Head

I think if Spinel were on homeworld, she would elect to stay with Lars and the Off Colors.

Gemcation

I don’t think Spinel would be there. If she were for any reason, she would actually ASK Steven what’s wrong... I swear I didn’t mean to make her a Mary Sue in the talking to people department, she’s just better at talking to people because she had to be.

Raising the Barn

Spinel being in space might help with the Lapis arc here. If she were still living at the Barn she would try to get Lapis to calm down.

Spinel is part of the SPL squad now, so Lapis would probably be pretty concerned about her... but I don’t think that will outweigh her ptsd. Lapis runs off into space, leaving Perry behind.

Back to the Kindergarten

“Life doesn’t start in a Kindergarten. It ends here.” Okay that’s profound character development. Back to Lapis.

Lars of the Stars

Between Lars’ Head and Lars of the Stars I definitely wanna add some chapters Spinel would insist on Lars being captain. He’s earned it, and she’s not the leader type, but she’s there.

Things Emerald mentions: stole personal shuttle and crashed it on Upsilon 9; impersonated imperial officers during a cosmic jubilee; Stole the Sun Incinerator (she left it in the docking bay of Klavius 7 with 67 elite Citrines guarding it. They didn’t see Lars.); she’s been on their tail since sector 4 (that’s like 3 sectors ago)

When Lars loses his cool about Sadie, Spinel might have some good advice. She’s dealt with feeling left behind. She might actually slap him...

Once Lars is better, his plan would make sense. She wouldn’t freak out or take over...

Spinel could take charge while Lars drives the ship, but Stevonnie would be too fast for her.

She’ll be pretty angry about that...

Jungle Moon

Not much change. Spinel might be more involved in their rescue.

Your Mother and Mine

Either Spinel would have talked to them about Rose earlier, or she would be amused by the misunderstanding.

Stories of Rose always make Spinel uncomfortable. She wouldn’t interrupt though. When Steven talks about dreaming of Pink, THEN she’s interested. She would struggle not to speak up. Spinel, Steven, and Garnet stay for the fuel run.

Somewhere around this time, Steven tells Spinel about Lapis, and she would decide she needs to get back.

New episode: Spinel and Peridot

Basically Spinel rushes back to comfort Peridot. She’d want to go looking for Lapis, but Peridot is hurting.

“I know how you feel I... I feel it too...”

They get to hug, and watch CPH together.

Letters to Lars

Spinel would be helping the mailman with his acting career, and possibly talk Lapis into helping build some alien warning system for the town.

Can’t go back

“Ihavetogo-Ihavetogo-Ihavetogo-Ihavetogo-Ihavetogo- I have to go! I HAVE TO GO!!! STEVEN!! I have to go...”

-Spinel

The moon base is a little more damaged from the fight, but the observation room still works. This would be more of a Spinel/Lapis episode. A lot of the same things would be said. She would still sing Distant Shore.

This is it... this is when she shows her the garden!

“It’s like I’m back inside the mirror, except... I put myself here...”

“If I went back now, there’s no way things could go back to the way they were.”

“... I... want to show you something.”

Steven would still be there, so the other lines can still happen... they go to the garden.

If Lapis still panics and runs after Steven’s dream then it will break Spinel’s heart a little... but I want Spinel on earth for this next part... she would stay because of Steven’s dream.

A Single Pale Rose

Spinel: “Pearl, I kept quiet for as long as I could, but after everything that’s happened... I won't let you do this anymore. Steven needs to know...”

Pearl: “...”

Spinel: “If you won’t tell them, I will...”

Pearl: “and betray Rose’s trust?”

Spinel: “she betrayed mine...”

While Pearl is pulling out random junk.

“Ugh! Stop playing around! Steven, your mother-“ Pearl puts her hand over Spinel’s mouth.

Now We’re Only falling apart

Spinel finally gets some exposition. In fact, hearing about all of her efforts makes Spinel think about her differently. Rose isn’t the pink she knew. She had her flaws, she made HORRIBLE decisions, but she... changed.

But what about Spinel? Well Spinel gets to explain why she never got along with Pearl.

She remembers... and she didn’t just remember on Moon base. She’s always remembered... since long before Steven was even born. She didn’t know the details, but she put the pieces together. She was mad at Pearl for treating Pink like this flawless goddess. She was mad at Pearl for thinking herself special, when she (Spinel) had been thrown away like garbage. She assumed the previous Pearl was too. She saw Pink as selfish, and foolish. Maybe she was changing, Greg changed her... but then Pearl’s disdain for Greg made Spinel dislike her even more. To Spinel, being anti-Greg was like being against growth.

Spinel was so happy when Rose was with Greg... and then Rose said she was gonna have a baby... and to Spinel it was like she was running away again; abandoning Greg and Pearl like she abandoned everyone else... Spinel had a tantrum and ran off. Rose went to talk to her alone, and Spinel got to confess that she remembered.

The last thing Spinel ever said to Rose was, “I hate you… But I’ll love Steven like he was my brother… because that’s what you were to me... a mom. Not a good one, but a mom.”

What’s Your Problem?/The Question

The above would probably be spread out across these episodes. Maybe Spinel is telling this to Ruby, or she’s telling it to Pearl while Steven looks for Ruby.

I think she’s talking to Pearl... so she can freaking fangirl when Ruby proposes...

Made of Honor

Okay so Steven AND Spinel have been putting that scrapbook together.

Reunited

Spinel is either hanging the flowers or comforting Peridot. They spend a lot of time together now.

She’s crying like a baby during the wedding, and tearing up the dance floor during the reception.

The Invasion

I think Spinel would be resistant to Blue’s Powers just like Lapis. Maybe they fuse? Hmm...... they would be unfused by the time that yellow joins the fight.

Once Steven is out cold, Spinel goes beast mode. She probably gets poofed.

Legs from Here to Homeworld

Spinel is poofed. She stays with Bismuth.

Change your Mind

Spinel appears with Lapis and Peridot in a well thought out final design. During the climb, she would make it to the top with the others easily... and immediately get controlled by white...

Steven frees his friends, and that’s when Spinel meets Pink Pearl. Spinel actually asks if PP can come with, and they are hanging out throughout the ending.
