Ring (Inktober 2019 Prompt)

Summary:

Inasa rubbed his sweaty palms against his pants for the twentieth time in the evening, despite the chilly weather. He had hoped a winter carriage ride would help cool him off after working up a sweat ice skating in the city square, but the cool breeze did nothing against the anticipation and the box burning a figurative hole in his back pocket. The urge to constantly check that it was still there was overwhelming, but he was trying hard not to look suspicious and ruin the surprise.

Work Text:

Inasa rubbed his sweaty palms against his pants for the twentieth time in the evening, despite the chilly weather. He had hoped a winter carriage ride would help cool him off after working up a sweat ice skating in the city square, but the cool breeze did nothing against the anticipation and the box burning a figurative hole in his back pocket. The urge to constantly check that it was still there was overwhelming, but he was trying hard not to look suspicious and ruin the surprise.

I hope I’ve been reading the signs right. It’s mutual, right? Am I giving everything away? If I am, and he’s still here, it must be fine then. It’s fine, right?

A hand placed over his own broke the runaway train of nervous thoughts. Turning to his companion, the anxiety diminished as he saw Shouto’s mismatched eyes gazing calmly up at him, a small smile gracing the usually passive face that has Inasa swooning.

“Inasa, are you alright?” The dual-haired man asked, concernedly.

Shaking his head vigorously to pull himself out of it, Inasa replied, “Of course! I always feel stupendous when I’m next to you!” The carriage came to a stop. He looked around for something to talk about, to change the subject. “This path is so lovely isn’t it, with the string lights everywhere, don’t you thi-”

His sentence faltered as his eyes landed back upon his partner, suddenly knelt before him.

“Quite lovely,” Shouto murmurs, keeping his eyes on Inasa. He held up a small velvet container. “I was going to wait until we talked about this more, but this feels like a good time. Inasa, you mean the world to me, and I want to be by your side for the rest of our lives.” He opened the box, revealing a silver band with intricate design work carved into the sides. “Would you-”

“Wait!”

“-do me the honor of-”

“Hang on there-”

“-marrying me?” As Shouto finished the phrase, Inasa produced a similar box from his back pocket.

Inasa laughed heartily, running his free hand over his short hair. “I can’t believe you beat me to it! I had it all planned out, and yet your instincts found a better moment than my planning ever could. Shouto, I’ll marry you if you’ll marry me back,” he replied, opening his own box to display a gold ring with twin gemstones embedded - a diamond and a garnet.

Shouto put a hand over his mouth to stifle a chuckle. “Well how could I say no to such a bargain?”

“Just say ‘I do!’”

“That’s for the actual wedding, not the proposal.” Both men were grinning ear to ear. “But yes, my answer is yes.”

Inasa pulled Shouto up from his kneeling position back up to the carriage seat as though he weighed nothing, and lips crashed together. Eventually they parted, as relief flowed through Inasa’s entire body after being such a nervous wreck. They exchanged rings and cuddled together for the rest of the ride, Inasa’s arm over Shouto’s shoulder, rings clinking together while they held hands.

Notes:

I'll be upfront right now, I will more than likely not be able to do all the Inktober days, seeing as how day one is already late! I may switch it up with some Kinktober later, but that's to be seen :) Thank you for reading!
