Work Text:
it was a rainy day. yoongi used to love the rain, found comfort in the sound of raindrops against the window. today, he woke to that same sound, but there was no longer any love for the rain.
the small apartment was silent, save for the low thrum of the heater and sound of the rain. yoongi lay in his too empty bed, the lingering scent of cologne on the sheets invading his senses. he shut his eyes and begged his body to go back to sleep. outside, the rain continued to pour.
yoongi didn't sleep.
he sat up in bed. hunched over, he took in the apartment. it was too clean, too impersonal. it no longer felt like a home without hoseok. yoongi missed waking up to pieces of hoseok in his life. he missed the smell of his cologne, missed having his belongings scattered throughout the apartment, missed staying warm with him under the bed covers.
yoongi no longer loves the rain, because with the rain came memories.
it was a rainy day when yoongi had met hoseok on the college campus. yoongi had foolishly left his umbrella at a friend's house and only remembered once it had started pouring. by the time yoongi had arrived to his class, his clothes had been soaked through to skin. he hadn't known hoseok then, not really. they were both in the music production courses, so yoongi had seen him around but they'd never talked. on that day, hoseok took one look at yoongi and lectured him about the importance of umbrellas. hoseok walked yoongi to his dorm after that, holding an umbrella over the both of them.
hoseok had asked yoongi out on a date that day. yoongi was taken aback, because where yoongi was the grey clouds on a stormy day, hoseok was the sun that coaxed the flowers to bloom. he took so long to react that hoseok almost rescinded the offer. they had met each other a few days later in front of a cozy cafe, the sun's rays peeking through breaks in the clouds. the rain had let up just an hour prior, and puddles of muddy rain water still decorated the street.
their first kiss had been in the rain. it was a windy autumn night, and the wind pulled in grey storm clouds that hid the moon and the stars. hoseok had taken yoongi to his favorite hidden spot, a hill that overlooked the entire city and provided a 360 degree view of the city lights scattered below them. they had been there for hours, the wind biting past their layered jackets and into their skin.
on yet another rainy day, yoongi had planned to take hoseok out to the ocean, one they had been to many times before and held so many memories. yoongi loved the rain, but not when it interrupted his well thought out plans. hoseok had only laughed at yoongi's disappointment, grabbed his hand, and gave him the warmest smile. in the end, they still went to the beach, but instead of a walk on the beach, they sat and talked in yoongi’s old car for hours, parked in an empty lot that overlooked the harsh waves. they talked until the sun shone through the clouds again, until the sun could just barely be seen on the horizon, drifting slowly below calm waters.
they day hoseok left him it was cloudy, rain threatening to fall from the skies. yoongi felt emptier with each item that hoseok tossed into his suitcase. yoongi didn't have the strength to stop him, all he could do was sit hunched over at his desk, his laptop playing the final draft of a song titled 'paper stars' through discarded headphones.
the rain and the sun, the two things yoongi loved the most, and they were both gone.
it was a spring day when hoseok left. and to yoongi, it felt like he'd lost the sun.
he wonders if hoseok ever thinks of him when it rains.
