Chapter 1: raindrops

Chapter Text

Light raindrops fell and danced upon the cool asphalt, the miniscule trickles of water bouncing for a second before joining the thin layer of rainwater.

Through the grey clouds small rays on sunlight shone, sending its sparkles all over the glistening watery roads, as if casting a bright ray of hope through the gloominess of a rainy day.

Streets and wide alleys were crowded with newly blooming umbrellas, the clear vinyl reflecting the afternoon sun’s glow as the people paced through watery streets.

Near the heart of the city was a park. It wasn’t so grand, a few trees and a fountain decorated the grassy fields. The rain kept dancing to its own beat as people opened up their umbrellas and laid under the trees.

Soraru was neatly seated on a damp wooden bench, small puddles forming right below his feet. A gray umbrella rested itself on his shoulder as he gazed towards the clouds.

Ever since he was a child, Soraru adored the sky. He couldn’t pinpoint why exactly, but everytime he stared at the sky, seeing clouds roll by and the sun rising and falling every day, it filled him with comfort and eased his mind.

He loved how the sky’s color would change almost consistently every day. Pink and pastel blue in the morn, clear aquamarine in the day, and a deep, unending void of azure and indigo at night.

There was only one sky Soraru never liked, though.

The dreary, sad shades of achromatic colors that painted the clouds each time they wept and filled the earth with its tears. He loved the rain, sure; he loved the smell of petrichor overflowing his senses, putting his mind at ease, he loved hearing the soft pitter-patter of raindrops on his roof, hypnotizing him with its repetitive melody, and best of all, he loved seeing the sky beam with its vibrant spectrum of colors as the clouds start to clear up.

But god, it would be a huge lie to say that he felt nothing whenever he gazed at the empty, gray clouds looming above him.

Oh, how he wished he could go up to the clouds and sweep away the cumulonimbus’ tears of despair and anger. How he wished to see a rainy day without dark clouds every single day of his life.

“Soraru-san!” a voice called out from amidst the soft layer of mist and rain.

The sound of shoes rapidly tapping against the wet stone pathways of the park grew louder and louder before it came to a halt.

“I-I’m late aren’t I?”

“Yeah, pretty much.” The older said as he shrugged, patting the spot next to him before adding “Watch out, it’s wet.”

The albino next to him nodded, scratching the back of his head as he sat down. His jacket and hair was wet with rainwater, a few droplets falling from the tips of his white locks.

“I’m really sorry, Soraru-san, I lost my umbrella on the way here..” Mafu says, scooting closer to the older male. As their shoulders touched, Mafu slowly felt himself being warmed up by the older.

“It’s alright, don’t worry about it okay?” The raven replied, wrapping an arm over the younger’s shoulder.

“Oh! Uhh..I got this for you, Soraru-san!” Mafu said as he reached into a plastic bag and pulled out a warm can of oden. With a smile, Soraru took the can from Mafu, giving him a small kiss on the forehead. Mafu giggles to this, snuggling closer towards his boyfriend.

The smell of warm broth filled their senses as Soraru opened the can and took a small sip. It wasn’t anything special, definitely not as good as stuff they’d get from a restaurant, but Soraru didn’t care about that. Mafu grabbed another can of oden and took a sip, sighing in utter ecstasy as Soraru pet his soft locks.

Soraru started thinking about the albino beside him. He reminisced the time they first met; Mafumafu would leave several praises on his covers, often joining the crowd of fangirls in calling him a so-called “god”.

He remembered seeing Mafu gush over him on twitter, how he would often talk to his friends and fans about how much he adored and idolized him.

Though Soraru first thought it was creepy,  he soon found the guy to be quite endearing, cute perhaps.

He remembered the day when he and Mafu got together and made their first collaboration. Through working together they grew closer and closer; Soraru started enjoying their time together and he was sure that Mafumafu felt the same too.

The two would stay up late cooped up in their apartments, having hour-long phone calls and playing video games with each other. Each time he heard the other giggle and laugh, Soraru could feel his heartbeat grow rapid.

He learned a lot about Mafumafu through their growing friendship. From his interest in cute anime and cats to his love for songwriting and composing. Mafu would ever so often tease him for shedding his ‘Tsunraru’ side, being met with an eye roll as a response.

He remembered rubbing soothing circles into Mafumafu’s back as he cried. It was the first time he saw the younger’s façade of happiness and sunshine broken down like this.

Tears streamed from the younger’s eyes, dripping against his sweater like raindrops. Seeing his friend in a condition like this broke him, and though he didn’t know why, Soraru swore that he would always protect the other man.

He remembered the time where he had confronted those who seek to hurt the albino, making sure that they wouldn’t dare lay a finger on the younger after he was done with them. Since then, he helped Mafu get back on his feet and thrive.

Seeing Mafumafu grow happier and healthier with each passing day filled his heart well up with joy.

And eventually, he could feel himself fall for the younger male.

He remembers the night he confessed to the other. His face had turned an unimaginable shade of red as he uttered his feelings to the albino.

Expecting a rejection, Soraru felt as if he was going to break down; but he was met with a soft kiss on his cheek and a blushing Mafumafu proclaiming his love for him.

Four years had passed since that night.

Mafu reminded Soraru of the sky. From his soft, white hair resembling fluffy clouds under the sunny sky to his bright red eyes that looked like the vibrant sunset.

If Soraru were to be honest, Mafumafu was definitely more beautiful than the sky. Though he loved the sky, he knew that it would never compare to how much he adored the albino.

Now here they were, surrounded by the dancing raindrops all around them.

Even in the rain, Soraru felt as if he were sitting under a beautiful sunny sky whenever he was with Mafu. He swore that the heavens would part and choruses of angels would come flying down whenever the albino was with him.

He loved Mafumafu so much.

He loved him more than any beautiful sky. To him, not even the gorgeous dawn skies that greeted him each morning with brilliant colors and soft, cotton clouds would ever compare to just how ethereal his lover was.

The two men sat together on the wet wooden bench, sharing their warmth as cold air and winds blew past them. Mafumafu took another sip of the hot oden broth from the can as he snuggled up closer to the older man, resting his head on Soraru’s shoulder.

“I love you, Soraru-san.” His voice was soft, barely audible; but Soraru managed to catch it.

A thin smile formed on the raven’s lips, his eyes gazing at his beloved.

“I love you too.”

Through the gray skies and rainy streets, the two sat together with a single umbrella up as warmth surrounded them. The two men were in a world of their own, unbothered by the constant pitter-pattering of the rain.

Even if the weather was gloomy; even as the sky wept, to Soraru, every moment he got to spend with Mafumafu is like a bright, sunny day.
