Will You Be My Baby

Summary:

Kim Seokjin is a world renowned Paleontologist who has his life figured out. He enjoys his job and is getting married soon. Maybe he’s a little bit of a workaholic but there’s nothing wrong with being passionate about your work. That is until, Kim Taehyung disrupts his life and turns it upside down.

Through many misunderstandings and one leopard, Seokjin starts to wonder if maybe if his life wasn’t as perfect as he thought and maybe instead there is more to life than work.

Notes:

This story is loosely based on the movie Bringing Up Baby. It's an older movie with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. I really love old movies especially ones with the two of them and this idea was so cute it screamed Taejin to me. So I had to write it. I hope you enjoy it!

I plan on trying to update this at least once a week.

Chapter Text

“Did you hear the news that they uncovered more of bones of the Pachycephalosaurus from the dig in South Dakota and we should have them all by Friday?” Namjoon said his tall frame positively shaking from the excitement.

“I heard, it’s so exciting with these we should be able to have a complete skeleton and add it to the exhibit.” Seokjin answered looking up from the bones he had been working on cleaning. He pushed back his black hair leaving dirt streaks in it.

Jin turned at the staccato sound of heels on the floor and saw Jiwoo walking up to them looking happy, “Did you hear the news?”

“I did. It’s great it will be the centerpiece of this collection.” Seokjin proudly said. He and Jiwoo had been working for four years to put this collection together and finally they were going to be able to show it to the public.

“I can’t believe after all these years we will finally be able to show off all of our hard work,” Seokjin said, “Friday is going to be such an important day.”

“For more reasons than just that.” Namjoon looked at the two of them with a conspiratorial grin.

Seokjin was confused, “What do you mean?”

“Aren’t you two getting married on Friday?” Namjoon asked, his brows furrowed in confusion.

“Oh, of course!” Seokjin exclaimed in a hurry, “Isn’t that great, two such important things happening on the same day.”

He and Jiwoo had finally decided to get married after being engaged for two years. They had been putting it off forever because they had been busy. She was the curator of the dinosaur exhibit had been working hard to put it together while he was the paleontologist and had been running all over the world to different dig sites to find the dinosaurs for the exhibit. When he was home he was working hard to put together the skeletons of the different specimens.

So they had finally decided that the only way they were going to be able to get married was to just go to the courthouse and forget about doing a big wedding. Not having a flashy wedding fit their relationship. They had quietly started dating when they had started to work on the collection and then they had decided to get engaged after two years together because it seemed the practical thing to do. They were both very comfortable together and they both liked that they agreed that work should come first before anything else.

“So when are you two going on a honeymoon?” asked Namjoon.

“Director, what do you mean honeymoon?”Jiwoo answered with her face scrunched up in surprise, “We won’t have time for a honeymoon. The collection is almost done and we still have so much work to do.”

“What do you mean no honeymoon?” Seokjin asked looking at her with wide dark eyes. He agreed that work was important but surely they could take some time off for a honeymoon.

“After hearing the news about the Pachycephalosaurus, I don’t know how you would expect us to have time to go on a honeymoon. Of course the exhibit comes first.” Jiwoo said, sounding like she was surprised he didn’t see how ridiculous the idea of taking time off was.

“Are you sure? I’m sure we could make time.” asked Seokjin, “I’m sure Namjoon could spare us for a few days.”

Namjoon was about to answer when Jiwoo spoke first, “No we don't have time. The skeleton needs to be completed by the end of next week and then there are all the last minute finishes that need to be done before we open the exhibit up for the public in a month’s time.”

“Speaking of time,” Namjoon said interrupting them, “Seokjin don’t you have an appointment with Mr. Park this afternoon?”

“Mr. Park?” Seokjin’s brows were drawn up in confusion.

“Don’t tell me you forgot,” Namjoon sighed, “Mr. Park who represents Mrs. Lee who is thinking of donating a million dollars to the museum and wanted to meet the renowned paleontologist Kim Seokjin.”

“Oh sure, that Mr. Park!” Seokjin said trying to pretend that he hadn’t forgotten, “Of course I didn’t forget. What time were we meeting again?”

“You were going to go golfing with him in an hour.” Namjoon gave him a stern look.

“Right, right. Well I should probably go get ready for that then,” Seokjin said hurrying to the door not meeting Namjoon’s eyes.

“And Seokjin please try to make a good impression. That donation would mean a lot to the museum.” Namjoon called after him.

“Don’t worry, you can count on me, Director.” Seokjin said.

“I can’t tell you how much this donation would mean to the museum and to me personally, Mr. Park,” Seokjin said while after teeing off his ball.

Mr. Park was an older gentleman, a little on the shorter side and had a little bit of a paunch that was emphasized by his tucked in yellow polo shirt. He had greeted Seokjin politely before promptly saying they should head out to the green.

“Dr. Kim, you seem to be under the impression that I’m the one donating the money. I just represent the possible donor Mrs. Lee. I’m just the legal advisor for her.” Mr. Park responded.

“Well I hope you can use your influence to tell her how grateful me and the museum would be for the donation,” Seokjin said, “and we would be delighted to discuss all the improvements we would be making with the money.”

“Dr. Kim. When I play golf, I only talk about golf, and that is only between holes,” Mr. Park said seriously, “How about we discuss this over drinks, after?”

“Yes, of course.” Seokjin answered.

“I think you hit your ball over towards the 18th hole,” Mr. Park pointed towards where the ball had landed.

“Oh, yes I did,” Seokjin replied, “I’ll be right back.”

As he walked over towards his ball, a young man approached it and was preparing to swing at it.

“Excuse me, I think that’s my ball,” Seokjin yelled out.

The young man swung and hit the ball and then turned around, “You shouldn’t do that.” he said in a surprisingly deep voice.

“Do what?” Seokjin asked confused. The young man was dressed in loose plaid pants, a loose white shirt, and a beret to top it off. He turned around to look at Seokjin and Seokjin was surprised to see how handsome he was. He had soft brown eyes that peered out from under a fringe of dark hair.

“Talk while someone is preparing to swing.”

“But, you-”

“It doesn’t matter. I forgive you because I got a good shot off,” he said flashing him a boxy smile.

Seokjin was thrown by the smile for a minute before saying, “You don’t understand. That was my ball you hit.”

“Oh, are you playing, also?” the young man asked while walking towards where the ball had landed.

“Well, yes. I just teed off of the first hole and-” Seokjin was trying to keep up with him.

“Oh you’re new here. This is the eighteenth hole. You should be back over there.” the young man pointed back to where Mr. Park was, who was looking in exasperation at Seokjin.

“Mr. Park, I’ll be right with you,” yelled Seokjin and then turned back to the man. “Now see here you have my ball. If you look at it has a distinctive logo on it.”

“Hmm mmm. I’m not superstitious about things like that. Now move back, if I sink this putt, I will beat my record.” the young man said concentrating hard on the ball.

“What does that have to do with anything?” Seokjin felt like he wasn’t following this conversation.

The young man didn’t say anything, instead he lined up his shot and putted the ball into the hole.

They both walked over to the hole and Seokjin pulled out the ball and turned around to show him the logo which was a circle with a dinosaur breaking out it.

“See this circle with the logo in it,” Seokjin held the ball out for the man to see.

“Well of course it’s a circle it wouldn’t roll if it was square,” the young man replied.

“What? No, I mean look at the logo. This is my ball,” Seokjin was getting annoyed.

“Well, what does it matter. It’s only a game,” the young man said with a shrug.

“You don’t understand. It’s very important that I impress the man that I’m with and instead he’s waiting on me,” Seokjin said trying to sound reasonable.

“Well then it’s silly of you to be messing around on the 18th hole.”

Seokjin gritted his teeth, “Well if you would just hand over that ball. I will be on my way.”

“Of course, make sure to tell them to put it with my bag when you are finished.”

“But-,” Seokjin knew it was no use trying to reason with the young man, “Nevermind.”

“Dr. Kim, are you playing or not?” Mr. Park yelled across the green.

“Yes, I’ll be there in a minute, Mr. Park.” Seokjin yelled back.

He started to walk back over to where Mr. Park was when the caddy suddenly turned around and asked, “Isn’t that your car?”

“What?” Seokjin turned around and sure enough the young man was in his car and was attempting to back it out of a tight spot and was coming precariously close to hitting another vehicle.

“Hey,” Seokjin yelled out and started to run towards his car.

He remembered Mr. Park and turned around to yell, “I’ll be with you in a minute, Mr. Park.”

Seokjin reached the parking lot just as the young man bumped into the identical vehicle that was right next to it. He ran over and made a motion for the young man to roll his window down.

As soon he rolled the window down, Seokjin said, “What do you think you’re doing?”

“I’m trying to unpark my car.”

“This is my car!” Seokjin’s voiced loudly.

“Oh good, then would you mind moving it out of the way?” the young man asked.

“No, this is my car.” Seokjin emphasized by gesturing at the vehicle.

“I understand that. If you moved it then I could get out of here,” the young man said.

“I think you’ve made a mistake. I think the concierge gave you the wrong keys. Maybe this is your car,” Seokjin pointed at the car next to him.

“Do you think you could move it so I could get out?” the young man asked.

“You want me to move your car?” Seokjin asked but it was clear the young man wasn’t listening.

Well if I move his car for him, maybe he will get out of mine. He went over to concierge and asked for the keys to the vehicle.

Once he got the keys he got into the other car and pulled it out and moved it out of the way. He got out and walked back over to his car and leaned down to try to talk sensibly to the young man.

“Do you mind getting out of my car?” Seokjin asked.

“This is your car?” the young man said looking up at him, “First it was your golf ball and now it’s your car. Is there anything that doesn’t belong to you.”

Seokjin had finally lost his patience and snapped out, “Yes, thankfully not you.”

“Now there is no need to lose your temper,” the young man said, eyes wide.

“I’m not losing my temper. All I wanted to do was play some golf,” Seokjin said in an exasperated tone.

“Well you're in the wrong place for that because this is a parking lot,” the young man replied looking at Seokjin like he was the one being ridiculous.

“Get out of my car,” Seokjin said forcefully.

“Listen you are going to have to move. I really need to leave,” said the young man.

Seokjin stomped over to the passenger side and pulled open the door and got in. He was going to show him that it was his car by showing him his belongings that were in the car.

“Okay, I guess I could give you a ride,” the young man said and started to drive.

“Wait, no.” Seokjin said and then caught sight of Mr. Park, who had come to see what was going on.

He rolled down his window as they drove pass and yelled, “I’ll be right with you, Mr. Park.”

“Dr. Kim.” He heard being yelled as they pulled out of the parking lot.

They had just turned out of the parking lot when the young man caught sight of the little RJ plushie that Seokjin had sitting in the backseat window.

“Oh, I don’t think this is my car,” the young man said with wide eyes and looking around in surprise.

“That is what I have been trying to tell you,” Seokjin gritted out.

The young man pulled a sudden U-turn and they were back in the parking lot before he knew it but there was no sign of Mr. Park anymore. He parked Seokjin’s car by his car and turned to Seokjin.

“Well no harm, no foul, right?” the young man said with what he must of thought was a charming smile.

“I-”

The young man cut him off, “Well, I really must be going.”

Before Seokjin knew what happened, the young man had gotten out of the car and had gotten into his and sped off. He gave a jaunty wave to Seokjin before he left.

Seokjin went back into the club but when he asked for the whereabouts of Mr. Park, he found out he had already left.

He went back to his car and climbed into it and thunked his head against the steering wheel. What a disaster and what a strange man that was. Hopefully I never have to deal with him again.

Seokjin arrived back at the apartment he and Jiwoo shared and set his bag down on the side table near the entrance.

From the living room, Jiwoo called out, “So how did it go?”

He walked into the living room to see her intently working on her laptop, her long black hair pulled sensibly up into a bun and her glasses perched on her nose, “Not good.”

Jiwoo looked up at that, “What do you mean not good? You know how important this money is to our museum.”

“Of course I know that. It’s just some unforeseen problems arose and I didn’t even get a chance to talk to Mr. Park about donating to the museum.” Seokjin pushed up his hair in frustration, leaving it sticking up in the back. It really is getting too long, I really should schedule a haircut. He thought absently.

“Well you’re going to have to schedule another appointment with him,” Jiwoo said matter of factly.

“But when will I have time. We still have so much to get done.” Seokjin walked into their kitchen to get a glass of water.

“I know, the Director said that Mr. Park is to attend a fundraiser tomorrow. You’ll go and talk to him there and I know you will impress him with your brilliance.” Jiwoo said, going back to working on her laptop.

“How am I supposed to get into this fundraiser? Aren’t fundraisers just for the wealthy?” Seokjin asked, gesturing with his hands which caused water to slosh out of his glass.

“Don’t worry about it, my cousin already has an invitation. She can add you on to the guest list.” Jiwoo answered back, still typing away.

Seokjin sometimes forgot that Jiwoo came from a wealthy family. She rarely ever talked about it and was usually too distracted by work to involve herself in family affairs. It had been one of the things Seokjin had admired about her that she didn’t use her family connections to help her. She had worked hard to get where she was and was one of the best curators in the country. He had a suspicion that was why she always put work first. She never wanted to be accused of her family name helping her in anyway.

“Okay I’m going to go to bed. Don’t work too late, okay,” Seokjin said pressing a chaste kiss to her head.

Jiwoo didn’t even look up and made a noncommittal sound, “Uh huh. Good night.”

We really should go on a honeymoon after the exhibit is done. I can’t even remember the last time we did anything together outside of work.

Notes:

So I have had the first three chapters of this written for the last 3 months and then I moved and am now trying to situate myself in a new place. I'm having a hard time getting motivated again to write, so I'm hoping by posting this it will force me to do so. So expect an update at least once a week.
