Work Text:

“Hey, Jotaro! Show me that trick again!”

Turning around in his seat, Polnareff grinned back expectantly at Jotaro, arms crossed over the headrest of the car. However, he was only met with Jotaro’s face shaded by the brim of his hat, and a judging, somewhat tense, silence that usually seemed to follow Jotaro around.

“Come on, don’t glare at me!” Polnareff huffed, reaching out a hand to poke the brim of his hat. “If you don’t want to do the trick then say so!”

“Don’t touch his hat.” You warned, not looking up from the book you were reading in the back seat, back pressed to Jotaro’s side, and legs spread out over Kakyoin’s lap. “He’ll punch you on instinct.”

“Watch the road Polnareff.” Kakyoin glared from behind him.

“It’s okay Silver Chariot is watching the road!” Polnareff quickly reassured the younger man. “Anyway, what do you mean on instinct? Are you saying he wouldn’t hit me if he was thinking about it?”

“Huh?” You asked, looking up finally. “Oh, no he totally would, he’s just sleeping right now.”

“...what?”

Joseph turned fully around in the passenger seat to look at his grandson, confusion on his face.

“His eyes are open!” Joseph declared, pointing a finger at you menacingly. “I won’t fall for your trick!”

“Oh you won’t fall for it again, you mean?” You snorted, before gently reaching a finger up and pointing to Jotaro’s eyes, one eyebrow raised. “Anyway, he’s sleeping with his eyes open. He does it all the time. Have none of you have noticed?”

“...you’re fucking with me.”

“I am absolutely not fucking with you.” You grinned, snapping your book shut. “Ah, damn, I didn’t put a bookmark in.”

“There’s absolutely no way that Jotaro is sleeping.”

“There absolutely is, and I will bet you money on it.”

“...ten dollars.” Joseph said, quickly digging cash out of his wallet.

“Twenty or I tell him what you did.”

“Fine!” Joseph huffed, handing his cash to Polnareff, only for it to be snapped out of his hands by Kakyoin.

“Watch the road!” He warned harshly, before taking out his wallet to add to the growing pile, as well as your own. “I’ll wager he’s not actually sleeping, either, however.”

“Good! Now, I’ll prove he’s sleeping.” You nodded, keeping your voice even as you grinned. “Joseph spilled cola on Jotaro’s hat three days ago  and pretended that Polnareff did it.”

“THAT WAS YOU?” Polnareff screeched from the driver’s seat, turning around to lunge at Joseph in an incredibly petty move that caused the car to swerve. “HE ALMOST KILLED ME!”

“POLNAREFF CONTROL THE FUCKING CAR!” You screeched as Polnareff continued to grab Joseph by the collar, as the old man attempted to explain himself. “JESUS CHRIST”

Moments later, Polnareff had turned back around in his seat, a lump on his head from where both you and Kakyoin had hit him. He was explicitly told not to turn around in his seat again until they got to the next rest stop, where Joseph would take over driving. Polnareff would not be allowed to drive again, which was very clearly the wisest decision.

However, you continued to grin excitedly as you pointed to Jotaro’s still sleeping face. He had not moved an inch since the start of the conversation, his chest rising and falling at the same slow pace as before.

Although his eyes were open, Jotaro was still sleeping.

“Holy shit.” Joseph whispered in disbelief, eyes wide as he watched his grandson continue to sleep despite all of them nearly crashing, and the truth about the cola spill coming out. “How did you know?”

“Oh, he always does this.” You shrugged, eagerly grabbing the dumbfounded Joseph’s wallet and raiding another twenty bucks from him. “He just sleeps whenever he feels tired and I nudge him awake if there’s danger.”

“Are you telling me that half the time Jotaro was silent he was-”

“Sleeping? Yeah.” You cackled, cutting Kakyoin off mid sentence. “Are we at a rest stop yet? I promised Jotaro I’d wake him up when we got close.”

“We’re only a mile or two away.” Polnareff confirmed, not even daring to look back in the rearview mirror. Lest he face the wrath of almost the entire car, that was. “We should be there in a couple minutes.”

“Oh good!” Without turning to look at Polnareff, you stretched out your legs again. “Don’t tell him I told you.”

“Why would we-”

“Hey, you hear that Jotaro?” You asked, turning in your seat to poke at Jotaro’s arm. “Rest stop soon.”

And despite your words, everyone’s eyes were locked onto Jotaro as he blinked, looking around for a moment.

“...what did I miss?”

“ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?”

“POLNAREFF THE ROAD!”
