Time for a Break

Summary:

Masato brings Gunzo some food to help him refuel during Rugby practice! General fluff and romantics ensue!

Notes:

I've had this idea for a LONG time, because I love super domestic romance stuff such as one cooking for their significant other. So I hope you all like it too!

Work Text:

Masato walked leisurely through the grounds of Yoyogi Sports Academy, taking his time as he held a cloth wrapped bundle in his hand. The cloth bore a traditional Japanese cloth pattern and was highly decorative. Like everything that was in it, it was carefully selected to be the most pleasing. Masato wanted this to be perfect. Afterall, this bundle was a gift to the man he loved more than anyone else in this world. It was a cool day, he took his time and enjoyed the fresh air and the ambiance of the school.

Something about the school seemed more energetic than his own Shinjuku Academy. Perhaps it was because it was a sports school it had that energy to it. It certainly looked like it, Masato thought. It seemed like everywhere he turned he could see another sports field or gym complex. And the students! Everyone looked so athletic and fit. Almost made him feel self conscious about his lithe appearance. He continued on his way, seeing various clubs and teams practicing around the school as he slowly made his way through the campus. Part of his leisurely pace was also due to the simple fact that, in actuality, he had no idea where he needed to go.

This was something he should fix, he thought. Stopping in what looked like a major thoroughfare between fields and the main buildings, Masato spotted a student sitting on a nearby bench. He looked as good as any person to ask for directions, he figured. Approaching the guy, he simply gave a friendly smile before he asked.

“Excuse me, but could you tell me where the rugby team is practicing? I'm looking for one of the team members.”

The student looked up for a moment, a bit surprised by being suddenly approached. At first he was confused, seeing that Masato was wearing a different school's uniform. However, he then noticed the bundle in his hand, and it became quite obvious what he was here for. He'd smile and nod, showing that he recognized the question. He then pointed out toward the fields, to one of the corners of the campus.

“The rugby field's over there. I think the team is practicing right now, if you wanna head over. They'll probably be there for a little while longer.”

Masato simply nodded, thanked the student, and continued across the campus. He held the wrapped bundle carefully in both hands now, increasing his pace to a light jog. He wanted to make sure that he caught him during practice, as this would be much more helpful to him during his practice. He passed by a couple fields where various teams were practicing. He heard the sounds of the track and field members running, the cracks of bats from the baseball team, and other sounds of club activity. But he was determined to make it to the rugby field and tunnel-visioned a little bit.

After a good jog across the campus, he finally made it to the rugby field. He recognized the unique goal posts and knew he was in the right place. And there was the team, practicing in the middle of the field. It seems they were practicing passing and ball handling, as they appeared to be running drills involving throwing the ball between each other. He approached and stood off to the side near the field's seating. It would seem they were busy, so he would wait. He simply watched for the moment, scanning each player to try and figure out which one was his loved one. It took him a moment before spotting him. 'Ah, there he is', he thought. Off to the side he finally noticed the name on the back of the jersey.

Tamamura.

Gunzo was in the middle of the drills, passing and catching the ball while running around other teammates. He seemed to be doing very well, Masato thought. He wasn't surprised. Gunzo was a very good rugby player and one of the stars of the team. Masato simply watched for several minutes, focusing on Gunzo. He had never seen him practice before, so this was an interesting new experience for him. Maybe he should try to do this more, he thought. He should support Gunzo's sports more. Holding the bundle to his chest, he waited with anticipation, and watched him happily.

It was several minutes later when the captain called for a short break, and the team seemed to be scatter about the perimeter of the field. They would flock to their water bottles and re-hydrate for the rest of practice. Thankfully, Gunzo seemed to be walking toward the side of the field that Masato was standing at. He smiled, this would be his chance. He waved and called out to Gunzo to get his attention, who was looking off in the other direction at the moment. He couldn't wait to see the look on his face when he finally noticed.

“Gunzo! Hey!”

Masato spoke loudly over the din of activity from the team in order to grab his attention. He grinned from ear to ear, excited for Gunzo to be surprised by his visit. When he heard Masato, Gunzo was certainly surprised. His eyes went wide for a second as he heard someone calling his name. However, when he realized who it was, his eyes instantly lit up and he smiled widely. He jogged over to Masato, wrapping his arms happily around him and picking him up in a hug. It was easy to see that he was over the moon to have Masato here. Some of the other members of the team even stopped to see what the commotion was about.

“Masa! Hey! I'm so glad you're here!”

Masato reciprocated the hug, while still keeping a tight grip on the cloth bundle. He would also give Gunzo a loving kiss on the cheek. With a smile, Gunzo set him back down. However, now that the initial excitement of seeing his boyfriend subsided a little, he canted his head and looked a bit confused at Masa. He seemed to be even more confused when he saw the cloth wrapped bundle in his hand, wondering what it was.

“What brings you here? I mean... I'm glad you're here! But I mean... you know...”

Gunzo sighed, looking a bit flustered by this. He didn't want to sound ungrateful for Masato showing up to his practice. He was so happy he was here to support him. He was just genuinely curious, and didn't want to come off as too questioning. Masato, for his part, just chuckled at Gunzo. It seemed like he didn't mind at all. He held up the cloth wrapped bundle Gunzo, smiling widely all the way. He gestured to the nearby bench, and moved to sat down at it. Gunzo followed after, sitting next to him. Some of Gunzo's nearby teammates would grin and point at them quietly, quicker on the uptake of what the gift was than Gunzo. Unwrapping the bundle, Masato produced a black lacquer bento box, and he beamed at Gunzo with intense pride and happiness.

“I brought you something to eat. I figured you'd get pretty hungry during practice, so I wanted to bring you something nice to help you regain your energy.”

Gunzo looked surprised yet again at this development. A bento? For him? He never thought Masato would do something like this for him. He tentatively took the box and sat it in his lap. Setting aside the chopstick case, he'd open the box to review it's contents. Inside was a tailored meal for Gunzo. The largest section was a tray of white rice, sprinkled with furikake to give it some added savory flavor. In addition, along with the rice were two compartments of karaage as well as some salad with a miso dressing to give it more flavor. Everything looked amazing, Gunzo thought. Especially the karaage. It was one of Gunzo's favorites, as he was a pretty 'meat and potatoes' kind of guy in terms of his preferred foods. His eyes lit up, seeing this carefully prepared meal.

“Karaage?! I love that!”

Gunzo cheered happily. Masato simply smiled, looking to Gunzo and feeling extremely happy that he liked the spread. He had carefully listened to all of Gunzo's food preferences so that he could make just the right set of foods for him. The nearby teammates were looking over at the two, a bit in awe about the bento that Gunzo was brought. They would murmur and chatter amongst each other how lucky Gunzo was to have a boyfriend like that. Gunzo heard the comments and felt his cheeks become flush. Quickly he'd grab the chopsticks and would move to dig in, eager to try his boyfriend's cooking. Popping one of the pieces of karaage in his mouth, he couldn't help but openly swoon over it. He let out a happy moan.

“So goooooooood!”

He cried out, grinning as he began to scarf down the fried chicken. Masato laughed a little at his enthusiastic response. It was something he always loved about Gunzo; he was very open about his emotions and was always very emphatic about them. It was honest and and endearing, he thought. He simply sat there and watched, taking great pleasure in watching Gunzo enjoy his cooking. Once Gunzo was done with the karaage, he would move onto the rice.

It was that he finally noticed that the furikake topping on the rice was shaped into a heart in the middle of the rice. He stopped and blinked, processing this. It was such a cute little detail, he thought. It was just like Masato too. He loved the fact that Masato made these little romantic gestures in everyday things. He loved his sense of romance for things like this. He'd pick up a little bunch of rice and smiled a little, getting an idea.

“Hey, Masa?”

He asked, turning to his boyfriend. Masato responded with a quizzical noise, turning to the rugby player. Gunzo smiled as he held up the rice to Masato's mouth. Seemed he wanted to feed it to him. With a smile, Masato would nod and gently lean over, taking the rice into his mouth. He giggled as he chewed, letting Gunzo feed him. This would continue for the rest of the rice dish, Gunzo taking turns eating some himself while also feeding some to Masato. This was Gunzo's way of reciprocating the romantic gesture and trying to be romantic himself. Masato enjoyed this greatly, elated to have the peaceful moment with his love. When the rice was finished and the salad was left, Gunzo was a little hesitant at first. Upon seeing this, Masato smiled a little and leaned into Gunzo.

“Come on, you need to eat your vegetables too. Athletes need a balanced diet, after all.”

Gunzo poked it a little, still seemingly unsure about the food. It wasn't that he didn't think Masato prepared it well. The rice and the fried chicken were absolutely fantastic. The best he had ever had, in fact. But he always had a little bit of an aversion to vegetables. They were certainly not his favorite food, he thought. Upon seeing his continued trepidation, Masato had an idea. He'd lean in and whisper into his ear.

“If you finish the salad, I'll be sure to give you a kiss.”

The rugby player's cheeks suddenly became red as he looked clearly flustered. Masato instantly recognized that his plan worked. Gunzo suddenly wolfed down his salad, barely even taking a breath between bites. This caused Masato to laugh even more. When he was done, Gunzo placed his chopsticks down in the empty bento box and looked to Masato with a blushing red face and a look of excitement in his eyes.

“S-See? I finished!”

Without another word, Masato leaned in to make good on his promise. He wrapped his arms around Gunzo's shoulders and kissed him on the lips. Gunzo would wrap his arms around Masato in response, returning the kiss with just as much passion, if not more. That passionate approach to his emotions again. Pulling away, Masato kept his arms around Gunzo and just smiled at him. Gunzo couldn't help but grin widely, looking like a goof. It was charming, Masato thought. However, the two were interrupted by the sound of one of the rugby team members calling out to him.

“Hey, Tamamura! We're doing tackle drills next!”

It seems their little break was over and it was back to practice. This caused Gunzo to get a little flustered. It seemed that he was having such a good time with Masato that he had lost track of time. He had completely forgotten that he was just on a break in the middle of practice. He shot an embarrassed look to Masato, who for his part looked a little embarrassed too. He wondered if the other teammates were watching the pair and waiting for them to realize that the break was over.

“A-Ah crap! I completely forgot! Uh... I-I gotta go back to practice, so...”

Gunzo stumbled through, not sure what else to say to his boyfriend. Masato leaned in once again to place a reassuring peck on the cheek. This didn't help the already embarrassed flush of red on his cheeks. Masato gently shook his head, indicating that it was alright. He would then quietly move to scoop up the bento box set and wrap it back up in the cloth he had brought.

“It's alright. How about I stay for the rest of your practice, and maybe we can get something to drink afterwards?”

Masato would suggest. Gunzo's previous smile crept back over his face, glad that this wasn't going to be the last interaction with his boyfriend that day. He nodded emphatically and stood up excitedly. He adjusted his jersey and checking his cleats to makes sure everything was in order. Afterward, he would turn back and gave Masato another kiss on the cheek.

“You'll watch me... right?”

Gunzo asked bashfully. It seemed Gunzo felt it was important. This made Masato's heart melt a little. He didn't think it was that important to him, but he was glad that it meant so much to him. Masato nodded in response, smiling happily.

“Only you.”

With that, Gunzo ran back onto the field with a big, goofy grin on his face. Now he had his amazing boyfriend to watch him while he practiced. He'd be sure to show off all his skills and impress him. He could feel a spring in his step as he rejoined his team. Looking back to Masato watching from the bench, he had to choke back silent, happy tears.

'… I have the best boyfriend in the world.'
