Chapter 1: One: Happy Fucking Birthday

Chapter Text

This story begins in a hospital. Jeon Memorial Hospital, located on the east side of Sunju. It's run by a wealthy family living in a big house directly in front of the hospital. The Jeons were a family of two, well until two years later. Mr.Jeon, the owner and head surgeon, has no problem delivering Mrs.Kim's son on September 12, 1995. They are short on staff, as Chuseok is being celebrated from this day all the way until the 15th. Mrs.Jeon, a receptionist at the front desk in the labor section, immediately calls for her husband when the distressed woman and her husband come rushing in.

"My wife's in labor! We need a doctor immediately!"

"I'll get my husband down here!" Mrs.Jeon exclaims, picking up the phone.

"Hurry! Oh, please hurry!" Mrs.Kim is having a hard time standing.

Mr.Jeon, preparing things for a surgery the next day, drops everything and rushes right down as soon as he hears. They aren't that busy this day, besides a few sick people. Flu season was approaching. Calm and collected, yet freaking out at the same time, Mr.Jeon carefully gets the screaming woman to a room. Once she's laying on the bed, he prepares her for birth.

"This is a fast labor..."

Mr.Kim shakes his head. "She's been in labor since yesterday. It was going to be a home-birth, but she couldn't take the pain."

Widening his eyes, Mr.Jeon puts on gloves, preparing for the birth of this screaming woman's son. She's in labor for about 35 minutes before actually giving birth, which only took about 20 minutes. Mrs.Kim decides to give birth without using any morphine, and is proud of herself once her newborn son is born. He's 3.5 kg(7.5 lbs) and 5 ounces. Mrs.Jeon has to act as a nurse in this situation, cleaning the baby and wrapping him in a blanket afterwards. She hands him to his mother, who's smiling proudly.

"He's amazing.." Mrs.Kim begins crying.

"Honey, what do you want to name him?"

"I feel like he'll be smart in his lifetime...so let's name him Nam Jun."

"Ah," Mrs.Jeon laughs a bit. "The genius of South Korea. I'm certain he'll be a beautiful boy whom obtains lots of knowledge."

A few years pass and Nam Jun's now a six year old. He grows up healthy, happy, and makes friends with a few kids at school. His friends are Seok Jin, and Yun Ki. The three of them have class together, and often share lunch. Sunju elementary school is owned by Nam Jun's grandfather, so schooling cost him nothing.

He lives a happy life until the age of 12.

On his twelvth birthday, in 2007, his parents take him to get ice cream. By this time, Nam Jun's grandfather is deceased, his father inherets the money, but soon goes bankrupt, leaving them in poverty. His mother works everyday of the week, so he barely sees her, and when she is home, he's busy studying English. His father is a gambler, collecting debt after debt that Nam Jun would have to pay later on in his life. This day, his parents are both home and decide to treat him well for his birthday.

Sitting at the stoplight, Nam Jun's parents argue. Like always. Little did he know, this is the last time he'll see his parents alive. "I hate you!" "GOOD! I HATE YOU JUST AS MUCH!" "Why don't I just-" His father doesn't finish the sentence as he presses on the gas, pulling out in front of cars going throught the intersection.

Before Nam Jun can process anything, there's already a car smashing into the side of his family's car. He doesn't even realise he's bleeding and in pain because shock has taken over and all he can think is, "My dad just tried to kill us." It's traumatic, very traumatic, for you to be in the car with your dead parents on your birthday. It can really mess with the mind. It's even worse when you've got blood pouring from your abdomin and a huge gash on your head, but all you can do is worry for your parents. Even if they're dead. Even if you can't say your last 'I love you'. You're not even worried about the fact that they just tried to kill you. You just want them back.

Sliding to the other door, Nam Jun gets out, stumbling towards a few bistanders whom are calling the police.

"Oh my god! There's a child too!" One screams into the phone.

"He's bleeding!" Another one says.

He gets to the sidewalk before collapsing, clutching his shirt in pain. Not the pain of having metal impaled into his side, no. Pain of losing his parents. He sobs, drawing a crowd, as he bleeds out onto the sidewalk. He hears the faint sirens from somewhere in the distance and people murmuring. People are surrounding him.

All he says is,"It's my fault......If I was never born, then they would be happy....it's my fault...."

Getting him on the stretcher, the medics put the sobbing boy into the ambulance and take off, checking the car for his parents. What they see is horrifying. In the front seats of the car, there are his parents. His father has a huge piece of glass sticking from his head, and a piece in his back, while his mother's head is through the window, and the car that crashed into them is stabbing into her. There's a bloody mess everywhere, the red liquid filling the entire car.

The distressed twelve year old lays on the stretcher balling his eyes out. The medics desperately try to calm him down, but he just won't stop. His parents are dead. It's his twelvth birthday. He's all alone now.

This death is was shapes his character.
