Chapter 1: Prologue

Notes:

Thank you for clicking on this story! I hope you enjoy it! The first few chapters might be a little rough because I started this fic in 2018 when I was still learning English at school. I might rework some chapters in the future. The chapters are also longer than the prologue, so don't worry if you dislike short chapters.

9th July 2022: Reworked the prologue a bit. I just wasn't really happy with it anymore.

Chapter Text

Only one moment of negligence was enough for the demon to sneak into the monastery.
Astaroth, the Demon King of Rot, made his way into the nursery to search for the newborn Prince of Gehenna, carefully avoiding the priests and especially the resident paladin; and there he was, the heir to Gehenna’s throne, a small pink creature with few raven hair sleeping next to another child with a few moles. Even though they both seemed disgustingly human to Astaroth, it wasn’t hard to sense the dormant power radiating off of the first child.

Carefully, he picked the demonic infant up.
He secured the child in a cloth wrap he carried around his upper body and turned to leave the room. His job wasn’t done yet.
He also had to bring back the cursed sword, which the Paladin had used to seal away the Prince’s flames. He already had a rough idea where the sword might be hidden, he only had to get there undetected.
The baby however seemingly wanted to ruin his plans.

Being picked up and put near the King of Rot and his decaying flesh, roused the Prince from his sleep.
After a few coughs followed a deafening wail, which seemed to wake up the second child who joined in on the crying.
Almost immediately after the crying had started, hurried footsteps approached the room and Astaroth knew he wouldn’t be able to avoid a long drawn-out conflict. The body he was inhabiting could not contain his essence forever.
There was only one possible escape route the demon could take.

The door slammed open right as he jumped through the window.
A bullet grazed his shoulder but he knew he would get away as soon as he hit the ground.
He looked up to the window once more where he could see the figure of the current Paladin take aim again.
Astaroth didn’t wait any longer before running into the adjacent forest.
As powerful as the Paladin was, Astaroth knew he couldn’t keep up with him and thankfully the infant he had just stolen away ceased his wailing.
When he felt like he was deep enough in the forest, the Demon King took out a crystal flask with blood. Spilling it on the ground he began to chant.
A monstrous gateway emerged where the flask was emptied. The baby had curious eyes as he stared at Astaroth, attempting to touch his face with his tiny hands. Just before he could touch him, Astaroth put the child on the gate, allowing him to get slowly sucked into the demon realm. After the infant vanished, he left the host's body returning to Gehenna.

Shortly after, the Paladin Shiro Fujimoto arrived. He could only witness how the Gehenna Gate disappeared taking his adoptive son with him. He fell on his knees. Why did he leave the twins alone in the nursery? If he had been there, the demon wouldn’t have abducted Rin. At least they didn’t manage to get to the Kurikara, so the boy would be human and maybe, just maybe, they would return him, because he was useless to them with his powers sealed away. And Father Fujimoto would make sure that no demon would ever lay a hand on the koma sword.
