Work Text:

Lan Zhan doesn’t even look when he picks up the phone. It’s blaring the obnoxiously familiar pop song Wei Ying chose for himself at him, so it’s not really a surprise who it is anyway.

“Wei Ying?” he asks, and can hear Wei Wuxian sigh at the other end of the line.

“Will you come pick me up?” Wei Wuxian asks. “Jiang Cheng abandoned me for a hot make-out session with your brother and now I’m stranded.”

“Wei Ying!” Lan Zhan admonishes, because there are certain things he doesn’t need to know about his brother and brother-in-law, and them kissing definitely falls into that category.

“Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, will you be a good husband and come pick me up?” Wei Ying asks again and Lan Zhan wants to tell him that there is never a reason for him to beg that way, because yes.

He will come pick him up.

He would do anything for Wei Ying.

“Text me the address,” he says and takes his phone away from his ear when Wei Ying loudly declares his everlasting thanks.

His phone chimes not even a minute after he hung up and Lan Zhan sighs. The drive will take him almost thirty minutes, he knows, but he gets into the car anyway.

He will never just abandon Wei Ying.

Wei Ying is waiting in front of the bar when Lan Zhan arrives there, and he happily bounds over, clearly unbothered by the cold.

He does let out a happy, appreciative sigh when he slides into the seat, though.

“Lan Zhan, you really are the best,” he declares and Lan Zhan doesn’t even want to argue with that.

He hopes Wei Ying will always think that.

“You’re cold,” Lan Zhan says and reaches over to take Wei Ying’s hand in his own, trying to warm them up.

It’s a lot harder to do when Wei Ying insists on sliding their fingers together, but his hands are still getting warmer, so Lan Zhan doesn’t complain.

“Now, drive me home, will you?” Wei Ying asks, and he turns his head a little bit to send a sly smile at Lan Zhan.

“Am I your husband or taxi service?” Lan Zhan wants to know, but he still starts the car.

“You’re my husband who provides the best service, taxi included,” Wei Ying says with a wink and Lan Zhan can feel the tell-tale burn of his ears.

He hopes Wei Ying never stops making him blush.

“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan says, because he can, and Wei Ying makes a happy noise.

There is still something Lan Zhan wants to know.

“You have your own car,” he starts and Wei Ying squeezes his hand once.

“I do,” he agrees but doesn’t seem to pick up on what Lan Zhan wants to know.

“Why do you never drive yourself?”

Lan Zhan knows Wei Ying is a secure driver, has witnessed it multiple times already, and Wei Ying never expressed any dislike driving so Lan Zhan doesn’t quite understand how he ends up so often in the position of picking Wei Ying up somewhere.

“Ah, Lan Zhan, my Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying sighs. “Don’t you know how nice it is to know you’ll always come for me?”

Of course he will always come for Wei Ying, that’s not even a question. And Wei Ying knows it, too, so Lan Zhan thinks it doesn’t quite answer his question.

His silence but clue Wei Ying in on that because he turns towards Lan Zhan in his seat and Lan Zhan checks with a quick look if he’s still strapped in.

“I enjoy this quiet time with you,” Wei Ying mumbles, like it’s a confession and Lan Zhan frowns.

“When we’re at home, something always comes up. Our home is constantly invaded,” Wei Ying goes on, but Lan Zhan knows he loves that.

They both love that their home is a home to everyone in their family.

“People are always dropping by, and then I’m always busy,” he goes on and taps his temple, reminds Lan Zhan of all the times he just jumped up after they had just sat down to jot another line for his novel down. “And you’re no better, being the amazing teacher you are.”

Lan Zhan does have to admit that he might take a lot longer to look through essays than he maybe has to. But he wants his students to succeed in their studies, and that means he has to properly show them where they can improve.

“And I love that,” Wei Ying goes on and curls even more towards Lan Zhan, “but I do enjoy these quiet times with you. There’s no one who can barge in here, no phone calls we have to take, no ideas to bother me, no essays to keep you occupied. It’s just us.”

Lan Zhan has trouble breathing for a second or ten, he just loves him so much.

He wonders if Wei Ying even knows just how much.

“I love you,” Lan Zhan says and raises their still intertwined hands to press a kiss to the back of Wei Ying’s. “I love you so much. Always.”

“I love you, too,” Wei Ying gives back softly and leans across to press a lingering kiss to Lan Zhan’s cheek. “Always, and more than I can say.”

“Mn,” Lan Zhan agrees, because yes.

Wei Ying put into words what cannot be put into words and it’s just another one of many, many reasons why Lan Zhan loves him so much.

They are quiet the rest of the ride, just basking in the love that is all around them and in Lan Zhan’s mind there isn’t a single better thing than this.

Nothing is better than simply being with his Wei Ying.
