Waste My Time

Summary:

Y/N has been thinking about Gavin a lot lately, and one day after he walks her home, she gathers the courage to ask him to stay with her for a little longer.

Notes:

I have been obsessed with this song, 'Waste My Time' by Saint Asonia, for a while (I recommend you listen to it while reading!) because the singer is one of my faves, and it also reminded me of Gavin so I had the urge to write this little oneshot for him. Back at it again with the Gavin fluff! I hope that you enjoy it, please remember to leaves kudos and comment if you do! Also, feel free to fangirl about this dreamboat of a character with me :P

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The silence established as they made it to her apartment building. It was a comfortable one, warm and familiar. Y/N looked up at Gavin, smiling to herself thinking how he insisted on walking her home like he always did.

The two of them stopped before the door, turning to face each other and about to say their goodbyes as usual. Gavin dedicated her a soft smile and fondly patted her head.

“Thanks” She said, feeling butterflies in her stomach under his tender gaze.

“Sure, no problem” He stood there for a moment, then turning to leave.

“Wait” Y/N found herself saying, holding his hand to keep him back. She found his company too pleasant to let him go. “Want to come in?”

Gavin’s eyes grew wide, and a faint flush appeared on his cheeks, spreading all the way to his ears. He then frowned a little and looked away, covering his mouth with his hand and clearing his throat.

“I-I mean…” She chuckled nervously at the misunderstanding. “Will you stay with me?”

“Yeah…” He watched her, his confusion turning to curiosity. “Any reason in particular?”

“Not really” The girl shrugged, already walking in as he followed. “I just want to be with you”

Too embarrassed to look back at him, Y/N came into the house. If she had looked over her shoulder, she would have seen Gavin grinning to himself. He never really wanted to leave her side either, so he was beyond delighted that she invited him in.

The soft silence from before evolved as they both sat on the couch, side by side. It was suddenly heavy with an unknown feeling. Of yearning, perhaps. Of fondness.

While Gavin leaned back on the seat and rested his back on it, Y/N sat up straight. Her leg was brushing against his, causing her heart rate to pick up. She wondered if, despite his usual calm and cool demeanor, he was feeling something similar. That nervousness and giddiness at the same time, that impulse to hug him and tell him all that her heart concealed as a secret, everything that she was too afraid and too shy to tell him… To confess how exhilarating it was to be with him and how much she missed him when he wasn’t around.

Giving in to her impulses, Y/N rested her head on Gavin’s shoulder and finally relaxed a little. His pleasant voice interrupted the stillness that had settled.

“You okay?” He asked, slightly taken aback by the sudden gesture.

“Yeah!” The girl cheerfully replied, a smile present in her voice.

Gavin tried not to move, afraid that she would pull away if he did. Looking down to her, he noticed she didn’t seem scared. Or sad, or upset. Truly, she just seemed… calm. There, with him.

His heart started speeding up at the thought that she wasn’t looking for his protection or comfort. Y/N just wanted him for himself, to be with him. Nothing less, nothing more.

The implications of this desire of hers made his mind race. Could she possibly be thinking what he was? Feeling that constant need to be together? He chastised himself for getting his hopes up even for a second, knowing how affectionate she could be in a daily basis. It didn’t mean anything special.

“Uh…” He muttered for a moment, soon recovering his confidence. “How about some music?”

Gavin slightly leaned forward, picking up the remote from the table. She didn’t move from the spot, still resting over him. Trying not to think about that and how much he wanted to hold her in his arms just then, the boy turned the stereo on.

A soft upbeat song came on, filling the quietness that flooded the room. The loudness of it had been deafening him, presenting so many unanswered questions and unsaid words.

They lingered in that position for several minutes, too comfortable to move.

Just as the song was ending, Y/N held on to his arm, engulfing him. Her head on his shoulder had lowered down to his chest, settling over the scar on his collarbone. Her ear was dangerously close to his frantic heart that he tried to calm, worried that she might hear.

She felt absolutely peaceful, oblivious to his train of thought. Y/N felt like they were the only people in the world, like anything could be happening outside her window. Nonetheless, it didn’t concern her if it didn’t concern him. If it didn’t concern them.

The song changed just then. The shift from upbeat to slow contrasted in the ambiance of the room. Y/N smiled to herself, endeared by the emotions it instantly evoked in her.

Hold on to me,

like we’re the only ones that see

The sky above us falling down

And breathe in my ear,

Like we’re the only ones that hear

The mountains crashing down

The lyrics were tender and romantic. They flustered Gavin, but he didn’t show it.

“You know” She dared to say, breaking the sacred quietness. “This song reminds me of you”

Gavin took several seconds to say something back. He gulped nervously, but quickly regained his composure. He ordered his frantic heart to quiet down, and his empty arms to remain in their place.

“You sure you’re okay?” He whispered in her ear, sending chills down her spine at the softness in his voice. “You’re never this… cuddly”

“Never better” Y/N replied simply, closing her eyes and enjoying each second of such closeness.

The boy took a deep breath in. His hopes returned, making him think that maybe he was right after all. Maybe, just maybe, she felt something similar. And he was willing to test it.

“Let’s dance” He muttered, cautiously moving to make sure she didn’t mind.

“What?” She allowed him to pull away, surprised.

When their glances met, it felt like magic. Like the world had stopped spinning for them. Like they hadn’t really looked at each other before. Not like that.

A small yet playful smile played on Gavin’s lips as he stood up, taking her hand in his to pull her up, and positioned himself with her in the center of the room.

Flustered, Y/N stared at him as his arms delicately wrapped around her frame. Her hands automatically moved to his shoulders as they both started swaying to the slow rhythm of the song.

I have wasted all my life

Playing games that I knew I’d lose

But let me sing to you, just sit here, don’t move

I just want to waste some time with you

A burning blush surfaced in her cheeks when Gavin’s smile widened. The lyrics of the song were telling, and the mere thought that he caught on to what she was hinting to before made her heart skip a beat. Why did he want them to dance to that song precisely? The one that reminded her of him, as she had admitted.

“G-Gavin…” She mumbled without realizing, but he just grinned once more.

He didn’t do or say anything, just looked at her. Almost reading his mind, she remained quiet to his silent wish. No unnecessary words, just silence filled with music.

His delicate grip on her waist changed so he was holding one of her hands again, now at shoulder length. The warmth of both their palms pressed together made the intimacy of the moment all the more evident. Relaxing a little into his touch, Y/N smiled up at him. His heart fluttered at the sight and he nearly melted at the gesture dripping with sweetness and innocence.

Take my hand, I don’t understand

How they kept us apart for so long

And smile so I can see

That it’s really you in front of me

‘Cause that’s still just so hard to believe

As they looked into each other’s eyes, they felt a unique connection. Their souls seemed to be coordinated, now more than ever. Their hearts were beating as one, racing at the same time and halting at the unison, if just for a second. Their minds seemed aligned, like they didn’t need any further words to communicate anymore.

That playful smile from before returned to Gavin’s lips, foreshadowing something unexpected. This time, though, it had a rare mischievous hint to it. Y/N’s stomach filled with butterflies as she watched him carefully, attentive to his next movement.

Indeed, Gavin moved his hand to the small of her back and gently pushed her closer. She gasped as their fronts graced, but didn’t pull away. Instead, in a mixture of compliance and embarrassment, she hid her face on his shoulder. Her nose against his scar felt gentle as she gingerly nuzzled it.

I have wasted most of my life

Playing games that I knew I’d lose

Let me sing to you

Just sit here don’t move

I just want to waste some time with you

Y/N’s knees felt weak as she looked up at him, so close that his breath touched her nose. However, his hands holding on to her promised to never let her go. His eyes were filled with an absolute devotion and adoration that made her flustered.

He felt vulnerable as he looked down at her, yet the strongest he had ever been at the same time. All his walls were down, all his defenses paused to make the most of that perfect moment. His shoulders were relaxed and his hands were soft around her.

Gavin arched his eyebrows slightly, giving her that small warning before he moved again. Y/N yelped when he gingerly dipped her as the song momentarily came to a halt. Blindly trusting him to support her, she arched backwards and laughed as he leaned her forward again. The girl was still giggling even after she returned to her previous position, now holding on to his arms.

He couldn’t help chuckling as well at the wonderful and contagious sound of her adorable laughter. Flustered by the way his confidence was building up and hers crumbling, Y/N sheltered in the safety of his shoulder again.

When her laughter died down and the lyrics took over the room once more, the both of them turned slightly sad upon hearing them. They could have had this before. They had wasted so much time being apart when they could have been happy together.

“Gavin…” She began, suddenly feeling the need to speak up. He hummed in reply, promising to listen to her. “Back in high school… I shouldn’t have believed any of it”

“What do you mean?” The boy whispered, afraid that his voice would break the magic that floated in the air.

“All those rumors and lies, I… I don’t understand how I could ever think they were true” Y/N kept her glance down, staring at his scar and taking in his scent. “You are far too kind to be what they said you were. You are too good in your heart”

He breathed out when her hand gently rested over his chest to demonstrate. The incredibly warmth radiating from him only seemed to be testament to her statement.

When she dared to lock glances with him, his amber eyes were shining with withheld emotion. Overwhelmed with too many feelings to speak them all.

Gavin couldn’t help to think back to those days. How even back then, she managed to make such an impact on him as soon as he saw her. Those days, he just wanted to be with her, protect her and care for her. However, there he was now. Holding the girl of his dreams in his arms and slow dancing with her. Silently confessing to each other all those feelings that had been building up ever since they were reunited. And all those moments of pain, of craving and loneliness… They were suddenly all worth it.

“It’s okay” He finally muttered, heaving a sigh filled with relief and content. “We’re here now, that’s all that matters”

“Yeah…” Her tone matched his, low and hesitant. “I guess you’re right”

Still in unison, their hearts began racing at the intensity of their locked gazes. They were extremely close, and their lips were mere inches apart. The pause that followed was torturous, delaying a profoundly awaited moment. It seemed to take ages until it arrived.

As their eyes closed, they didn’t know they threatened to spill. All of those feelings, repressed and bottled as they had been before, were now turning into sentimental heaviness in the best of ways. Until they encountered in a mutual kiss and everything seemed to fall into place.

Forcing back the tears

Over all the years

Boarding up the door

Throwing my hope to the floor

I could not forget, now it all makes sense

That you’re here with me

And I never ever want to leave

For several beats, they didn’t pull apart. It felt impossible to break away and leave that feeling behind, that exhilarating rush of emotions and reciprocation. That pleasant warmth that enveloped them and made them tingle all over. That intimate closeness as their bodies were glued together and their hands clutched on to each other. His on her back, hers lowered from the back of his neck to his chest.

After several seconds in which the kiss only seemed to deepen more and more, mouths open to drink from each other’s essence, they paused. Their eyes opened at the same exact time, falling on each other. Twin smiles occupied their faces, even if they gasped for oxygen. Her fingers tightly held on to his shirt for support while her brow furrowed at the recent sensation. His rested over a sliver of skin on her lower back, exposed during the heated exchange.

Gavin chuckled, experiencing an incredible happiness that made him feel lucky, as Y/N looked down to the floor.

“You’re not using your Evol” She muttered, resting her forehead against his as she still caught her breath. “I thought I was floating”

The boy laughed a little, squeezing her in his arms. He understood the feeling to perfection, because for a moment he was afraid he had lost control of it when he also felt like he was flying himself.

Gavin’s chest heaved up and down as he finally calmed down. She did too, feeling that connected with him still.

“I don’t really need my powers” He piped up, talking lowly. “I feel like that every time I'm with you”

That familiar flush arrived to her cheeks once more, and the girl tried to take a step back. They both chuckled, Y/N timidly and him in glee. Not allowing her to give in to her embarrassment, Gavin gently tightened his arms around her. The sight of her blushing made him giggle.

I would have wasted most of my life

Never even knowing you

Now you sing to me and I still don’t believe

That you wanna waste some time with me

As she rested against him, this time by the force of his arms attracting her frame closer to him, Y/N pouted up at him. He grinned, admiring her cute expression.

There was no space between them whatsoever as they held gazes.

“Gavin…” She whined, lightly pushing her hands against his chest.

“Just a little longer” He leaned his cheek on her head, squeezing her once more.

Holding her in his arms like that was something he had dreamed about for so long. It felt too nice to end it so soon. Despite her shyness, Y/N melted into his touch, resting here cheek against his warm collarbone, and sighed happily.

His lips on her hair startled her slightly. The kiss nearly echoed over the music with the absolute devotion he poured into it. She reciprocated by carefully kissing the exposed skin on his neck, sending shivers up his spine.

They were doing nothing, just standing there and lingering in their embrace. They had stopped swaying a long time ago, but that didn’t seem to bother either of them. Time wasn’t wasted as long as they were there. They were happy just holding on to each other and quietly singing along to the song. Together.

Let me sing to you

Just sit here don’t move

I just wanna waste some time with you

And now you sing to me and I still don’t believe

That you wanna waste some time with me
