"Don't you dare open your eyes," Hitoshi warned, his warm breath tickling Denki's ear as he spoke.
He couldn't even if he wanted to. Hitoshi's large hand was covering his eyes as he guided him down the hallway of their apartment.
"What's this even about, baby?"
"Really?"
Hitoshi stopped walking, sighing heavily. His breath fanned across the back of Denki's neck, making the puzzled blond shiver.
"What?"
"....I sincerely hope you're joking."
Denki frowned, trying to rack his brain to figure out why this was happening. Why his boyfriend shook him out of bed however early in the morning to make him close his eyes for a surprise....
Oh no.
Oh shit.
Oh fuck fuck fuck fuck.
Was today their anniversary??
That has to be it. Oh God. Oh no. How could he forget the best day of his life. How?? Surely, this would finally be it. The final straw on Hitoshi's back. He was finally going to leave him.
Denki didn't deserve him anyway. Hitoshi was so cool, so smart, so handsome. He deserved someone else. Someone badass and dope, someone who remembers anniversaries. He sniffed, unable to stop the leaking of tears from his eyes.
He didn't want Hitoshi to leave. He loved him. He didn't deserve him, but he was too selfish to let him leave.
Twisting around suddenly, Denki was able to pry himself loose and face Hitoshi. "Please," he choked, tears starting to run down his face. His arms gripping the thin fabric of his boyfriend's t-shirt, "Please don't leave me. I love you. I'll do better. I'll make it up to you. I didn't mean to forget. Baby please , I'm sorry, I love you believe me."
He pressed his face into Hitoshi's chest, crying hard. Warm arms wrapped around him, but squeezed him.
"Denki, look at me."
"No," he cried.
Suddenly, he felt... Weird. Not in control.
Goddamnit.
"Look at me."
Against his will, Denki's head snapped up to look at Hitoshi. His boyfriend smiled at him, and suddenly the weird feeling was gone.
He hated and loved when he used his quirk on him.
"Why would I leave you, ever?" Hitoshi asked, serious.
"Because I'm stupid and forgetful."
Hitoshi laughed, and hugged him again. "Shh, it's okay. C'mon, let's get to your surprise."
"But I didn't get you anything,” Denki countered.
Hitoshi frowned at him, confused. "Why would you need to get me something on your birthday?"
Denki’s birthday.
Oh thank you sweet baby Jesus.
"MY BIRTHDAY ! FUCK YEAH!" Denki jumped up, fist pumping into the air. He wasn't an idiot after all. Crisis averted, relationship saved.
Hitoshi stared at him like the moron he surely was, but Denki leaned up on his tiptoes to kiss his slightly opened mouth anyway. "I'm ready, let's go,” Denki said a lot happier than he was a minute ago and grabbed his boyfriends hand and brought it back up to his own eyes, blinding himself.
"You're the strangest guy I've ever met," Hitoshi said with a slight huff but started walking them down the hall anyway.
Their place isn't very big, so it's just a few steps later that they stop walking. Hitoshi removes his hand, and Denki opens his eyes. On their living room floor is a large box, wrapped in black wrappings and topped with a huge yellow bow.
"Go on, open it," Hitoshi encourages.
Eagerly, Denki runs to the box and starts ripping it open.
It’s a cat tree. He must have made some sort of mistake? "Babe," Denki says cautiously as to not hurt his feelings, "We don't hav---" He turns to look up at him but the words freeze in his mouth. Hitoshi wasn't there.
Denki stares at the empty space, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
From the corner of his eye he sees Hitoshi was walking back into the room and when he looks at him fully, he can see that his hands are full and something is cradled to his chest.
"Happy birthday baby," he said, grinning at Denki the same time he passes him a tiny grey kitten. It mews at being jostled, and the noise shatters Denki's heart.
"So... cute ," Denki says, unsure if he means his boyfriend or the kitten. He feels his eyes welling up with tears for the second time of the day. He cuddles the small ball of fluff to his chest, trying to convey how much he already loves them. "Thank you, honey," Denki manages to say, tilting his head up.
Hitoshi takes the hint and leans down to press his lips against Denki's. Kissing Hitoshi always makes Denki feel like he's won some sort of prize. Like he's the luckiest guy in the universe.
"I love you,” Denki says softly.
Hitoshi smiles and kisses his forehead.
"I love you too birthday boy. But uhm, you should read her name tag."
Denki pouted, "You already named her?"
"Just read it."
With careful fingers, he pulled the kitten back to examine her collar he hadn't noticed. There was a shiny silver heart attached to the collar and Denki read it out loud.
"Will you marry my daddy?"
Denki's eyes whipped back to Hitoshi, who was already on his knee, a small box opened in his hand, a gold ring nestled inside. "Denki Kaminari, I love you and I want to keep loving you for the rest of our lives. Will you marry me?"
And that's how, on Denki's 28th birthday he not only got a kitten named Mary, but a fiance too.
He really was the luckiest guy in the universe.
