Work Text:
Min Yoongi had an ordinary life until the day he met Jeon Jungkook, with the boy he discovered love.
Jungkook was four years younger than Yoongi, had innocent eyes and a giant heart. He always made the older one smile that gummy smile of his, he also would kiss his cheek and fill his stomach with butterflies. Yoongi loved to please him, he cooked his favorite foods and watched his favorite movies as often as he wanted.
Sometimes Yoongi would find himself wondering what it would be like if he and Jungkook broke up, but he couldn't think much about it without crying. He had found the love of his life and wanted no one else.
Yoongi loved Jungkook with every part of his body, every cell.
They graduated from college at different times. Yoongi was the first, shortly after he got his first job and so decided to rent a bigger and better apartment. Jungkook chose what he liked best, near college and away from Yoongi's job, but he didn't care and paid for everything himself even when Jungkook started work.
Everything was perfect between them.
They loved each other.
They had chemistry.
They had each other.
Until Jungkook decides it's over.
Yoongi begged Jungkook not to leave, promised that he would be a better boyfriend and give whatever he wanted. However, the next day all of Jungkook's belongings had been taken, along with Yoongi's heart.
After months of suffering for his breakup of a relationship of years, Yoongi decided that he would find love again.
The Battleship
It was a winter night when Yoongi realized that he could not find his new Jungkook inside his apartment. He had to leave.
He was determined to find love again, yet he had no plan. Once he realized this, he was wandering aimlessly in the dark sky that night without stars. He walked in front of several restaurants, seeing through the windows how people inside were all happy. They were between friends and lover, they all had reason to smile. Except Yoongi.
He was heartbroken and hurt. It seemed that every happy person was making fun of his unhappiness and Yoongi just wondered why he couldn't be happy like any of them.
Maybe he just didn't deserve to be happy like them.
Maybe he had left his happiness with Jungkook.
Maybe he still loved him.
Maybe he didn't deserve to be loved back.
Maybe he should go into that pub called The Battleship.
The walls of the pub were covered with wood-like wallpaper, the warmer temperature of the room allowed many to be without their thick coats, and gradually Yoongi felt like them, removing his thick coat and being welcomed by the place. He looked around the place with analytical, perceptive eyes, creating an opinion about the place as he sipped a drink the waiter had brought him.
He stopped his eyes on a boy who was sitting under the warning light, he was extremely similar to Jungkook, enough to be his ghost, and it startled Yoongi who had to control his frantic heartbeat along with the urge to run into the boy’s arms.
Yoongi took deep breaths before approaching the lonely boy. He asked to sit with him, smiling all the time and hoping he wasn't looking like a madman. It must have looked close enough to a normal smile, because the boy just smiled and said he could sit and that it would be nice to have a company for the night.
Their conversation lasted for hours and warmed Yoongi's broken heart. They stopped only when the pub owner warned that it was time to close and that they should go home, they obeyed immediately and went side by side.
Yoongi lived across town, but he wanted to stay with that boy that looked like Jungkook so much, he wanted to keep feeling warm. So, he accompanied the boy through the icy, lonely streets.
When they arrived the boy’s beautiful house both were embarrassed and unsure about what to do. Yoongi didn't know the boy's name but wanted to feel what he felt with Jungkook once again, because of that he leaned over the boy and kissed his cheek.
“Can I kiss you?”
“Yeah.”
The boy was cold-skinned from the freezing winter surrounding them. Or maybe he really was Jungkook’s ghost, the perfect image of him that kissed like the boy did too but wasn’t real nor his.
“Can I call you by my ex-boyfriend's name?”
Yoongi’s chances turned to toast when he asked. The boy stared at the other completely shocked, confused and angry. He snorted and shook his head, his face turning red perhaps from the cold, perhaps from shame or perhaps from anger.
“Get out of here! Forget my address too!”
Once more he was alone, cold and without his love.
Rusty Hook
Yoongi put his search for love on hold until winter was over, simply because that was a bad season for love. Spring would be his season.
He wore his best clothes and a new pair of shoes, styled his hair, put makeup and took a deep breath, he was ready to find love. His perfume was a gift from Jungkook, he didn’t really like the scent, but he liked the memories.
He went to Rusty Hook, a new pub in town and his first thought was that Jungkook would love the place. There was instrumental music playing, the walls were made of wood and they had the biggest rum variety.
For a moment he thought he saw Jungkook huddled up in a wicker chair and wandered over for a closer look. The person wasn’t his ex-boyfriend, in fact he wasn't even that alike, but he had a beautiful smile and offered Yoongi a drink.
They talked and kissed, the boy held him very tightly, until Yoongi asked awfully politely “Please, can I call you his name?”
The smiling boy let the smile fade, and in moments there was a large space between them.
“You shouldn’t try to fix your broken heart like that. It’s not going to work and it’s cruelty, people don’t deserve to be rebound.”
Yoongi just sighed and run a hand over his face. The boy was right, but he didn’t want to think about that, he just wanted to find love, he missed the felling, missed having someone.
He elongated his lift home and let the taxi driver go the long way round, keeping his shortcuts to himself. After the breakup, Yoongi didn’t run into Jungkook not even once, it was like the was hiding or never existed and had being his imagination all along.
He imagined Jungkook’s scent on the seatbelt and worried that he would forget his face. It felt like chasing a distant memory that always betrayed him and looked different.
He just wanted to stop suffering.
Parrot’s Beak
Yoongi decided to let his heart heal alone, so he didn't go to any pub for a while.
It was summer when his friends invited him to a part at Parrot’s Beak, saying it would be the most fun thing they would do in a long time. The place was decorated like a pirate ship and there were fake parrots everywhere.
His friends were really excited about the place, they laughed and drank, having fun with everything. Yoongi was just sipping his drinking and smiling at his friends, when he saw a boy with a broken arm messing with the smoke alarm.
He looked really bored, but he smiled at Yoongi as he approached him. It was too loud for them to hear each other speak, so Yoongi typed on his cellphone “Please, can I call you his name?”
He answered “No, you can't call me his name”, handing the phone over and disappearing among the people.
Yoongi sighed and went after his friends to warn them that he was leaving, they even insisted that he should stay longer and try to have fun, but his broken heart was hurting too much.
At home he threw his perfume away, tired of smelling that scent that reminded him of Jungkook and didn’t let him move on. His relationship with the boy was over and not coming back, no one would be like his ex and that was what he needed.
He didn’t need Jungkook.
He needed someone new.
But the most important, he needed help.
Cornerstone
Yoongi went to Cornerstone, a counselling and therapy centre. He spent a long time thinking about Jungkook but not talking about his feelings, he never realized how hurt he was, not only for the breakup but also about the relationship, however, in the therapy he finally could talk and then start to get better.
After a while, he stopped looking for love. He was happy, he rented a new apartment and threw away everything that reminded him of Jungkook, adopted a dog and called him Holly.
It was after another therapy session that he meets Park Jimin, the most beautiful person alive and who had the most beautiful orange hair. They bumped into each other at the Cornerstone entrance, both apologized and Jimin quickly left, leaving behind Yoongi who fell in love at first sight.
They saw each other again the following week and every other week, but never talked. Jimin was a Cornerstone employee, Yoongi found out after some time, yet they said nothing to the other but greetings.
One day he saw Jimin in a coffee shop, he was on the phone sorting out something about his and another employee's schedule, that didn't seem important while Yoongi was standing staring at him. Then, Jimin saw him there and recognized the handsome boy from Cornerstone, he was always friendly with those embarrassed smiles and looked at him often. He got his best smile, grabbed his coffee, and walked over to Yoongi's table.
“Hello! Can I sit with you?”
“Please, yes.”
Yoongi thought that maybe the orange-haired boy understood him like no one else. They both told the story about their broken heart, sharing the pain and comforting each other.
One breakfast in the cafe near Cornerstone became another and another, and soon they were meeting whenever they could for all kinds of dates. Yoongi smiled his gummy smile again, especially when he could make Jimin smile.
It was autumn and it was the season their love needed to bloom.
The orange leaves and the sunsets matched Jimin's hair.
Yoongi loved to watch sun set with Jimin, both of them lying on the ground of a park covered with orange leaves that fell from the trees. He turned his attention away from that beautiful action of nature and began to observe that beautiful being.
Jimin's orange hair mingled with the leaves on the floor. The sun that illuminated him made his skin even more beautiful, their mouth even more attractive and Yoongi's heart even more agitated.
Yoongi found that Jimin didn't cause butterflies in his stomach. Jimin made him feel calm, made him feel safe. He knew that Jimin was the person he was supposed to be with.
by late autumn the weather was really cold, the trees no longer had the beautiful orange leaves and they spent a little time outside. Jimin was wearing gloves indoors to warm his icy hands, Yoongi wanted to hold his hand and feel his skin, but there was that damn glove between them. Jimin laughed seeing Yoongi's gaze on his hands, taking off his glove and intertwining their fingers together as he knew the other wanted. They both smiled.
Yoongi could only hope that Jimin didn't go away like the leaves.
Yoongi could only hope that Jimin didn't go away like the sun.
They were close, well, they couldn't get much closer.
“Jimin, can I call you something other than your name?”
“I'm really not supposed to, but yes, you can call me anything you want.”
“I will call you Jiminie then” Yoongi caressed Jimin’s cheek. “Or sunshine.”
“I was scared you would call me Jungkook.”
“If I did that my therapist would kill me” he joked. “But seriously, when Jungkook broke up with me I thought I needed to find him in someone else. Then I met you and discovered a different love, the love I want to feel for the rest of my life. You are the person I’m supposed to be with.”
“I love you, Yoongi, you are the person I’m supposed to be with too.”
