To the Bonds We Create

Summary:

A quiet afternoon brings unlikely people together.

Notes:

A brief moment of peace that doesn’t come often. Dazai and Ranpo only show up for two sentences otherwise are only mentioned.

I wanted to create a moment with Chuuya, Kouyou, Kyouka, and Atsushi so here it is. Akari and Shinji are here because Chuuya was off duty so he could watch his children.

Kouyou is like a mom here.

Fixed my typos...I should watch what my phone does when I can't work on my computer.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kouyou picked up her tea, the warm sun beating on her skin. She listened to her young charge and his children. This was a rare day just to enjoy the peace of Yokohama, no work and missions needing their attention.

She smirked at the tender and motherly side of her protege she treated more of a brother, "Chuuya, you've really changed haven't you?"

He looked up at his older sister figure, he was confused by her sudden comment, "Ane-san, is the sun getting to you?"

"No lad, I'm just reflecting. I think a lot of things have happened and right now, you seem your happiest. To think you'll have another child," Kouyou smirked at the blush creeping onto his face.

"It wasn't intentional!” Chuuya could feel the urge to hide. He hated doing things unplanned, it was the same when he first got pregnant.

“You can try to deny it but I’m sure you’re not as unhappy as you say. This time you’ll have your mate and that doctor of theirs is quite good. Even Mori can’t deny her as your doctor,” Kouyou explained.

Chuuya realized she was trying to cheer him on, in her own teasing manner.

“You’re right, this time I don’t feel alone,” he said with a soft smile.

“Of course I am lad, now then Akari-Chan, Shinji-kun. I have some treats I bought the other day,” Kouyou said as she places a small basket on the table. The twins looked at it with excitment.

“And this is why I don’t buy you two sweets. You get plenty from both the agency and your visits with mafia members,” Chuuya sighed. His children ignored him in favor of the cookies they were handed. They were dark and had chocolate chips in them.

“They certainly do get spoiled,” Kouyou chuckled.

The four of them were seated in a park close to the mafia headquarters but far enough to keep it as civilian territory.

“Ane-san, do you think you’ll ever have another relationship? I know it’s just me praying and it’s your business, but I don’t think being alone forever or just working yourself to the end has merit,” he said.

Kouyou was surprised by her young protege, she knew he’d worried about that over the years but never asked.

“I don’t think you should worry about that Chuuya. You have more on your plate than most, so don’t add to it. Besides I’m fine with how things are now, unlike the previous boss I can say that I don’t mind my time under Mori’s rule. Besides, I don’t think I can ever forget my former lover. Sweet and caring, someone who deserves more than me but stood by my side none the less. It is painful to remember but I wouldn’t change anything for the world,” she said with a sad, distant look in her eyes.

Chuuya remained silent, in respect for the older woman and her lost love.

“I won’t pry anymore,” he said after the long silence.

Kouyou knew Chuuya had more care than most mafia members, but she also knew just how ruthless he could be. The combination being something far more dangerous then the usual black personalities. It meant he could ease his way into the hearts of others then rip it out without a second thought. His kindness was scoffed at but the ones who teased and made fun of it never saw the true face beneath that kind mask.

While the two continued their conversation, they didn’t see the approaching agency members till they greeted them.

“Chuuya-san, Kouyou-san,” Atsushi said with mild surprise. He eyed the twins still eating their cookies as if they were savoring every bite.

“My, how unexpected. Tiger boy and Kyouka-Chan,” Atsushi sighed at the name yet again. Did none of them care to learn his name.

“Is it your day off Atsushi, Kyouka?” Chuuya asked while he leaned his chin on the palm of his hand.

“Yes, for once we don’t have to do anything for those lazy adults,” Atsushi said with melodramatic movements.

“Dazai-kun really hasn’t changed, has he? He’s as vicious and lazy as the time in the mafia,” Kouyou commented.

“So that’s nothing new then?” Atsushi asked.

“I heard that Dazai-san was scary and made his subordinates do his work,” Kyouka relayed.

“Not just his subordinates, everyone else’s too. He tried to get me to do his paperwork but I threw it in his face and left the office. Never asked again,” Chuuya stated.

Atsushi wonder if that was all that happened, Kouyou answered his unasked question, “ Chuuya used his full strength, they were by the window and he punched Dazai into the glass. He didn’t fall out but he got the hint.”

Chuuya didn’t react to the actual telling of the story and Atsushi decided that being on the wrong end of the older omegas anger he could live without.

“Instead of standing why don’t the two of you join us. I have plenty of cookies,” Kouyou smiles and the two decided to take up the offer, actually it was mostly Kyouka and her sweet tooth.

Kouyou was happy to see the young girl no longer afraid of her. It was painful when Kyouka had decided to leave but she would have regretted stopping the young girl. She was currently in the best place she could be, away from the dark shadows and into the light.

“You knew that I didn’t kill my parents didn’t you?” Kyouka asked.

Kouyou decided to act aloof and ignore her question, Kyouka-Chan, you’ve been growing. Soon you maybe even taller than Chuuya,” Kouyou decides to tease the two.

“Hey I get enough of that from Dazai!” Chuuya exclaimed not happy to be poked fun at by multiple people in his life. It wouldn’t bother him as much if they just refrained from doing that.

“Chuuya-san really sensitive,” Atsushi commented with amusement in his words. Dazai had told him about the older males height complex and even went as far as staring that the other had such great reactions to his teasing. It really made his day.

“Don’t you think about it either,” Chuuya ordered bitterness stuck in his words. Atsushi decided that he didn't want to touch on that subject matter, he didn't have a death wish as his mentor did.

“What about Dazai, did you shave ways to tease him?” Atsushi asked.

“That walking disaster didn’t bite any of that bate. Though recently I’d come in position of a list of women and another omega he’d attempt to persuade into a double suicide. I brought that up and even threatened to send them his contact info, he begged me not to,” Chuuya stated with distaste.

“He’s more of an idiot than he claims to be,” Atsushi sighed.

“A dangerous idiot,” Chuuya sighed.

At that time Dazai sneezed three times, “Chuuya must be praising me!”

“I doubt that,” Ranpo stated and they continued on with their case.

Kouyou watched as her little family talked and enjoyed each other’s company. Kyouka sharing more cookies with the twins, Chuuya lecturing her about the amount of sweets she intakes as well as scolding his children for begging, Atsushi laughing about the whole thing which earned him a glare. She never thought she could fill a part of her heart, the hole that was left because of her mates death had been the key for her previous boss to control her. She knew that she could never fill it completely and that pain would always be there, but seeing those in her care grow up and bring in more warmth helped ease that pain.

“And-san, we should head back to headquarters,” Chuuya called out to her. Her eyes soft and warm as she agreed with him.

“Ah, Chuuya-san, Dazai-san is on a case with Ranpo-san, they said they may end up going late and he told me to tell you,” Atsushi said as he remembered why they were looking for Chuuya in the first place.

“I didn’t think those two would take on a case together let alone think it’ll last the whole day.” Chuuya said.

“The president thought their skills would bring it to a close faster, the only reason why they think it’ll take longer is because it’s them. They are geniuses but they don’t tackle cases together well, it’s always a circle with them,” Atsushi sighed recalling the two of them coming up with Kyouka’s entrance exam.

“I’m sure they’ll finish sooner than they said,” Chuuya said as he helped his children up. They both were trying to be held but Chuuya wasn’t going to indulge in their request.

“You’re right,” Atsushi sighed.

“We should talk again, it’s nice to have these peaceful outings,” Chuuya said.

“I agree, lad, continue to take care of Kyouka-Chan,” Kouyou said behind her sleeve.

Atsushi had always thought that many members were bloodthirsty and didn’t care who got hurt. He’d learned that they weren’t what he pictured. Well, Akutagawa was that way, even with a purpose he was still bloodthirsty and killed more frequently than most members. Even the black Lizards weren’t anything compared to their leader.

“Atsushi, you shouldn’t worry about partnering up with Akutagawa as much as you do. He may derail from time-to-time but he isn’t as ruthless as he makes himself out to be. Following orders is his hardest thing, with a one-track mind, it’s a wonder he didn’t get killed by Dazai,” Chuuya sighed.

Atsushi didn’t know if Chuuya was psychic or he just showed his thoughts on his face.

Kyouka and Atsushi watched as the two executives and the two children walked away. Their destination one of the five black buildings outlining Yokohama.

“Today wasn’t too bad, was it Kyouka?” Atsushi asked.

“It...was nice,” Kyouka gave a soft smile.

Bonds are created by the meetings and the relationships built from them. Not relationships are good, and some can be even painful, but they help shape the future.

Maybe some bonds hurt you in the end, but there is no regret in forging them.

“Welcome back, Chuuya-kun, Kouyou-kun, shall we get started?” Mori asked.

No matter what bonds you make, they will always hold meaning to something.

“To the bonds we create,” Kouyou thought to herself as she watched her young charge and her boss. The future as unsure of as the plans created by the people in their lives.

Notes:

It’s not long but it did serve it’s purpose. I love these quiet moments the best.
