Work Text:
Mina was walking back to the dorms when she felt the first raindrop hit her face. “Shit” she muttered, before beginning to jog, hoping to get to the dorms before the rain really started coming down. Unfortunately for her, the rain quickly picked up and began to come down hard.
But before she could start cursing at her misfortune, something came over her head, blocking the rain.
“Need some help?”
Mina turned to see Momo holding an umbrella over both of their heads, a small smile on her face. All of a sudden Mina became very aware of how close she and her classmate were. “I uh- Yes! Thank you” She said, letting out an awkward laugh.
“Of course” Momo said, her smile growing.
They stood there for a bit, smiling dumbly at each other until a loud crack of thunder startled them.
Momo cleared her throat, “Right! Uh, we should probably walk back to the dorms.”
They walked in silence, Mina occasionally sneaking a glance at Momo before looking away. However, when a shiver shook through Mina when the wind picked up, Momo looked at her with worry clearly written on her face.
“You’re cold aren’t you?”
“Wha-? No! I’m fine!” She said moving her arms to exaggerate her point.
Momo looked unconvinced, but continued walking.
Another shiver overcame Mina. Wind and damp clothes don’t exactly make for a warm experience.
“See? you are cold.” Momo said frowning.
“Okay maybe I’m a little cold- but it’s nothing for you to be worried about!”
“Mina your teeth are chattering.” Mina opened her mouth to protest when Momo cut her off. “Look, we’re already at the dorms, but please let me get you some tea to help warm you up before you go back to your room?”
Mina knew that she couldn’t turn Momo down, so she just sighed and nodded, walking in with her. What Mina didn’t expect was for Momo to grab her hand and start gently tugging her to the kitchen. Mina felt her blush coming back. All she could think about was how soft Momo’s hand was and how perfect it felt in her own.
When they got to the kitchen Momo let go of her hand (Mina tried to not let it show how disappointed she was) and began preparing the tea. Mina was still a bit in shock, but was snapped out of it when she heard Momo mumbling to herself while examining the various types of tea they had.
Momo let out a frustrated sigh “Why don’t they keep any good tea around here! I would kill for some of the black tea I had at home.”
Mina couldn’t hold back her giggle “Not everyone was raised on fancy tea like you, you know. Besides, couldn’t you just make some with your quirk?”
“Hm maybe, but I’d rather not waste my quirk on something so frivolous. The peppermint tea is probably good anyways.” Momo said as she began preparing it.
Mina hummed in response. A few moments later and Mina was having a warm cup of tea pushed into her hands.
“You didn’t have to do this you know.”
“I know, but I wanted to.” Momo Shrugged.
Mina took a sip of the tea, feeling how it warmed her insides. “Thank you.” She smiled.
“Anytime.” Momo replied. Mina thinks that the smile she gave her warmed her up more than any tea could ever hope to.
—
Mina and Momo were in the common area getting in an extra study session when the rain started.
“Don’t you just love the rain?” Mina said.
Momo looked up “You didn’t seems too happy about it the other week.”
Mina rolled her eyes “Well yeah, getting caught in it isn't very fun, but thankfully I had you there to save me. Who needs a prince charming when I’ve got a princess charming?” Mina snorted.
“You can’t just say stuff like that!” Momo put her face in her hands, and Mina swore she saw her blushing between her fingers.
Mina couldn’t help but think how adorable she looked in that moment. “But it’s true! And then you went ahead and made me a cup of tea like a true hero should!”
Momo snorted with her face still in her hands, but put her hands down to talk “If being a hero is just about making tea, then I think it would have been a lot easier to pass our exams.”
Mina laughed “Yeah, probably.”
Mina heard the sound of the door opening and turned her head to find Midoriya walking in, hand in hand with Iida, and unfortunately bringing the cold air from outside into the common area.
“Hey close the door behind you!” Mina whined.
“Sorry! Me and Iida were just walking back from our date when it started raining and-“
“I don’t need your whole story, I just need you to close the door all the way.” Mina cut in, knowing how long Midoriya could ramble on if left alone.
“Ah yes, of course.” Iida said, and turned to close the door all the way. “Well, Midoriya and I will be returning to our rooms now. I hope you two have a good rest of your day.”
Mina and Momo both wished them a good day too as they walked to the boy’s dormitories.
Mina opened her mouth to say something but was cut short by a shiver.
Momo frowned. “Are you cold?”
Mina shrugged “A little bit, yeah. But I’m fine you don’t need to-“ Before she could finish her sentence Momo started taking off her sweatshirt. “I- Wha- What are you doing?”
Momo tossed her sweatshirt to Mina “I’m giving you my sweatshirt. I was getting kind of stuffy in it anyways.”
Mina felt her cheeks grow warm “What? No! I couldn’t! I-“
“Mina, I swear it’s fine.”
Mina pursed her lips, staring at the sweatshirt in her hands and rolling the fabric between her hands. Holy shit it’s soft . She thought, but with another shiver, that was all she needed to accept it and slip it over her head.
As soon as it was on her she could feel butterflies begin to take place because Oh my god I’m wearing Momo’s sweatshirt and it smells like her and it’s so soft and I could happily die like this. With Momo’s height and also her having a larger build than Mina in general, the sweatshirt was definitely too big for her. But Mina preferred it that way. She felt herself smile as she snuggled into it, before looking back up and remembering that Momo was still with her. Except, Momo was frozen with a blush spreading across her cheeks. Mina blinked in surprise.
“Are you really that warm?”
“Am I- What?”
“Well you’re cheeks are all flushed and you said it was getting stuffy for you so I just thought-“
“Oh! Right! Yes, of course I’m just a bit warm that’s all” Momo said, laughing awkwardly.
Mina thought she was acting a bit weird but didn’t want to push it. “Well do you want to get back to work? I’m still pretty confused about question ten…”
They continued working until dinner, Mina feeling warm and fuzzy the whole time. And if Mina “forgot“ to give Momo her sweatshirt back at the end of the night, and the next night, and the night after that, well, Mina would just blame it on her bad memory.
—
“Ugh I’m sick of doing proofs! Can we please take a break? We’ve been doing this for forever.” Mina complained.
“Hm, I suppose it would be good to take a short break so you don’t overwork yourself.”
“Great!” Mina said, getting up from her desk and moving to sit on her bed with her laptop, patting the spot next to her for Momo to sit. “Come here, there’s this really great anime I’ve been meaning to show you!”
“Alright, we can watch one or two episodes, then we’ll get back to work.”
Mina nodded as she set up her computer, and Momo adjusted herself to sit beside Mina. And in that moment Mina became very aware of how small her bed actually was. Because her and Momo’s thighs were currently pressed against each other and it really shouldn’t be this big of a deal for Mina, but any skin contact from Momo has made her feel warm and tingly lately, so this certainly felt like a big deal. Mina felt a shiver run up her spine and her heart rate pick up speed, warmth spreading through her chest. She tried to ignore the feeling as she opened Netflix.
“Are you cold again?” Momo said, laughing a bit.
“Who me? Nah, it was just a random shiver, you know?” Mina said, voice cracking at the end.
“If you say so.” Momo shrugged “So, what’s this anime about anyways?”
Mina grinned and pressed play on the first episode. “You’ll see!”
—
They ended up watching more than two episodes. They were watching episode 6 when Mina felt a weight fall on her shoulder. It took her a moment to process what was happening but when she felt soft hair against her neck Mina was hit with the sudden realization that Momo had fallen asleep on her . Mina felt her body go rigid as butterflies erupted from her stomach. Mina paused the show and moved her laptop off to the side so she could gently extract herself from Momo. However, when Mina went to move, Momo wrapped her arms around Mina’s waist and mumbled something unintelligible into Mina’s shoulder. And if Mina wasn’t flustered before, she sure was now. She felt her body heat up as a blush overtook her. She just stayed like that for a few moments, with Momo practically draped over her trying to figure out what to do. Eventually Mina came to the decision to wake her up so she could go back to her own room, figuring it probably wouldn’t be too comfortable for either of them to sleep all night in this position.
Mina awkwardly shook Momo’s shoulder and gently spoke “Momo? Momo come on you’ve gotta wake up.”
“Hmm?” Momo hummed as she lifted her head.
“I said that you have to wake up. You, uh, kinda fell asleep on me while watching the show.”
Her eyes widened a bit. “Oh, I’m sorry that was kind of rude of me wasn’t it?”
“Nah, it’s chill. And it is pretty late” Mina shrugged.
“Yeah I guess so.” Momo yawned and stretched her arms above her head. “Well, I should probably go back to my own room.”
Mina nodded “Yeah probably.”
Momo got up but hesitated at the door, chewing on her lip. Mina tried to pull her attention away from Momo’s mouth but she found her eyes drifting back until Momo stopped and moved back to where Mina was sitting on the edge of her bed. Momo leaned over and gave Mina a tight squeeze and whispering a “Thank you.” before letting go and leaving the room, leaving Mina a blushing mess.
Mina fell backwards on her bed, put her hands over her face and grinned like an idiot in love. The warm tingly feeling was back and this time stronger than before. That night Mina dreamt of strong arms holding her.
—
It had been a few weeks since the night Momo fell asleep on Mina, but neither of them had really mentioned it. It was getting colder now and Mina had found herself wearing Momo’s sweatshirt more often than not. It was the most comfortable and warm sweatshirt she owned, with the added bonus of it belonging to her current crush.
“You’ve got it bad dude. I don’t think I’ve seen you without that sweatshirt on in weeks.”
“Shut up!” Mina whiled, playfully hitting Kirishima with the sleeve of her sweatshirt “You can’t make fun of me for this! You were pining after Bakugou for forever and you guys only got together because he asked you out.”
“Hey I’m just stating facts.”
Mina stuck her tongue out at him, then turned back to the math problem in front of her. “Okay enough of my love life, how the hell do you do number five?”
“Uh, I’m not really sure? I was just going to skip that and ask Bakugou about it later” Kirishima rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
Mina groaned “I’m never going to get this.”
“You could go ask Momo for help, I’m sure she’d be more than happy to help you.”
“I dunno dude, I feel kind of bad always asking her for help. Like, she’s got to get tired of always explaining things to me at some point, right?”
Kirishima stared at her “Honestly at this point I’m pretty sure you could ask Momo to help you hide a dead body and she’d say yes.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“So what did you get for number three? Cause’ I think I got it wrong but I’m not sure why.” Kirishima deflected.
“Hey! That doesn’t answer my question!” Mina pouted.
Kirishima laughed, but still refused to answer Mina’s question, leaving her to puzzle over it for the rest of the day.
—
Mina had rolled herself out of bed at the early hour of one pm on Saturday, ready to spend the rest of the day lounging around and doing nothing. She was happy to finally have a break from the increasing about of school work, and with exams slowly approaching she knew that this would likely be one of her last weekends with nothing to do. Mina made her way to the kitchen to make herself a bowl of cereal, only to find her box empty. She frowned and tossed it into the trash, grabbing Sero’s cereal instead, figuring that he’d be the least likely to get mad at her for stealing some. So the pink haired girl sat herself down at the kitchen island and let her mind wander as she scarfed down her breakfast. Just as Mina was taking her last bite, Momo walked wearing a tank top and leggings, looking unfairly attractive as always.
“Oh Mina! I didn’t expect to see you up this early” the dark haired girl teased.
Mina rolled her eyes, but smiled despite herself “I know, I have horrible sleeping patterns, but that doesn’t mean that you get to point it out all the time. And where are you going anyways? We don’t have class training today.”
Momo moved over to the sink to fill up her water bottle as she spoke “Yeah I know, but I wanted to get some extra practice in. There’s a couple maneuvers that I’m trying to perfect and I don’t have as much time in class to do that as I would like so I thought that I would work on it today while I have time to.” Momo pulled the bottle back from the faucet and screwed the lid back on. “Although, it will be a bit tough perfecting them when all I’ll really have to work with are punching bags.”
“I could help you.” Mina’s mouth moved before she could process what she was saying. Momo’s head snapped in her direction, confusion written on her face. “I- I mean you could practice the maneuvers on me? I mean, I don’t exactly have much to do today.” Mina let out a nervous laugh. What was she getting herself into.
“Oh! Yeah that would be great! Are you sure though? I know that you were talking about catching up on that show you’ve been watching so if you’d rather do that I’d understand.”
Mina waved her hand “Nah it’s fine! Just give me a few minutes to get dressed and all that.”
Momo gave Mina a blinding smile “Great! I’ll be down here!”
Mina nodded and made her way to her room, only slightly regretting the decision she just made.
—
Working with Momo was honestly more fun than Mina had expected. Sure, it was fairly repetitive and she was probably going to have a few bruises after this, but they kept a pleasant conversation going while training, and Mina even had the chance to try a few new moves that she hadn’t had the chance to try out before. It was getting late though, so they had agreed to have one final sparring match.
The pink haired girl was putting her all into it, and she knew that Momo was too. After spending the whole day helping each other perfect their techniques, they had an even better understanding of the other’s strengths and skill set. They honestly balanced out quite well in Mina’s opinion, and the thrill of having a skilled opponent was something Mina never tired of. However, all good things must come to an end, and Mina’s end happened to be Momo landing a hit at just the right time, sending Mina off balance and falling to the ground.
Mina only had a moment to be disappointed before she looked back up at Momo and saw her practically glowing, her eyes bright with pride and her smile dazzling. If Mina wasn’t already out of breath she’s sure that Momo looked in that moment would have taken her breath away.
Momo extended a hand out to her, and Mina accepted, letting Momo help hoist her to her feet. “You were amazing Momo!” Mina gushed.
Momo rubbed her arm, obviously embarrassed by the praise “I honestly just got lucky, your speed and agility make it quite hard to land a proper hit!”
They continued pointing out things that they each did well, as well as some things that they both agreed could be improved on. As they gathered their things and headed back to the dorms, Mina felt content with the way the day had gone, and was glad she decided to go with Momo instead of simply staying in her bed all day. And if Mina’s hands occasionally brushed against Momo’s, well she was too tired to overthink it too much, instead focusing on the warm fuzzy feeling it gave her.
—
“You should just ask her out already” Bakugou advisied.
Mina sputtered “I can’t just ask her out! I don’t even know if she likes me too! And what would happen if my feelings made her uncomfortable! I can’t just risk our friendship over some dumb feelings!”
Mina knew that complaining about her crush on Momo to her friends probably wouldn’t get her a satisfactory response, but the audacity that Bakugou had the tell her to “just ask her out already” wasn’t something she had expected.
Bakugou rolled his eyes “It worked pretty well when I asked Ei out.”
Kirishima turned to Mina “He has a point.”
“Yeah, but Kirishima actually liked you back!”
Sero looked up from his DS “You won't know if Momo likes you back unless you ask her. You know that, right?”
“Of course I know that!”
“Then ask her out” Kirishima pressed.
“You guys all suck. I’m going for a walk to get some air.”
Mina made her way down to the common room, when she heard what sounded like Jirou and Momo having a hushed conversation in the kitchen. Mina ignored them, figuring it was none of her business, and continued walking toward the door. However, before she could make it out, an outburst from a voice that was definitely Momo’s made her stop in her tracks.
“I can’t confess to her like that!”
Mina couldn’t hear anything after that over the blood rushing in her ears as she made her way out. So Momo liked someone. It’s probably not you a voice in Mina’s head spat it’s probably someone like Ochako, or that Kendou girl. Momo’s been spending a lot of time with her recently .
As much as Mina tried to push away these thoughts, the sinking feeling in her stomach just kept going deeper.
She knew she was right to not ask Momo out! If she had followed Bakugou and Kirishima’s advice she would have just made a fool out of herself! Mina mentally kicked herself for ever believing that Momo might share the same feelings.
—
Mina was sulking in her room that night when she heard a knock at her door. It was probably just Kirishima or Sero, and while Mina loved them to death, she didn’t really feel like letting them see her get so upset over a stupid crush. So Mina decided to ignore the knocking in hopes whoever it was would go away.
Unfortunately, it did not.
Mina grumbled as she rolled out of her bed, ready to yell at Kirishima to leave her alone.
What Mina was not expecting was to find Momo standing there.
“Oh! I’m sorry was this a bad time? I can come back later if-“
Mina didn’t hear the rest of what she said because all of a sudden the mortification of how awful she must look hit her. And- oh god she’s wearing Momo’s sweatshirt. Why didn’t she check who was at her door?
Momo stopped talking and was now staring at her.
“Uh.” Come on, Mina! Think of something ! “What?”
“Right, I’ll just come back another time.” Momo turned to leave and before Mina could think, she reached out and grabbed her hand.
Momo stared at her for a moment with a confused look on her face, and Mina realized that she should probably say something. “Sorry, I-“ Momo was looking down at their hands. Mina quickly let go. “I just wanted to know why you’re here? Not that it’s a problem that you’re here of course! I just… wanted to know…” Mina laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of her neck.
“Oh, right, of course.” Momo wouldn’t meet Mina’s eyes. “Well you see I just wanted to ask you- well I wanted you to know that- Um-“ Momo’s face was getting redder by the second. Mina didn’t know what to do. She was about to ask if Momo needed to sit down or something, when she took a deep breath and took Mina’s hand. “MinaIreallylikeyouandIwanttogooutwithyou”
What? “What?”
Momo let go of her hand and instead covered her face. “I’m so sorry i should probably go-“ Momo made it halfway down the hallway before Mina came to her senses.
“No, wait!”
Acting on pure adrenaline, Mina ran after her, spun her around, grabbed her face, and kissed her”
It was a short and clumsy kiss and Mina pulled away almost as soon as she went in. “I like you too!”
For a moment both of the girls just stared at each other.
Then Momo let out a loud snort. “Sorry I just- god I was so scared to ask you out and you just-“ Momo was now bent over laughing and Mina couldn’t help but find the absurdity of the situation funny too. It started with small giggles, but soon both the girls were boiling with laughter.
Finally when both of them calmed down enough to properly speak, Mina started talking “You know, I was convinced that you liked someone else. So I got all mopey for nothing!”
“Honestly, I was in a similar boat. Kyoka keep telling me to go for it but I didn’t think you’d actually say yes.” Momo was staring at her with a dopey smile.
“Well I’m glad that at least you had enough courage to ask! I had resigned myself to a life of pining!”
“Yes, though I’ll admit that I was only able to summon the courage after Kyoka threatened to just tell you herself.”
For a moment to two of them just stood and stared at each other with equally love struck expressions.
“Hey Momo?”
“Yes Mina?”
“Do you think I could kiss you again?”
Momo leaned in to close the gap.
Their second kiss was still clumsy, but perfect all the same.
