Run

Summary:

Your lungs desperately suck in air as you run along the rough path. Your feet stumble over tree roots and scatter leaves. You can’t hear anything behind you but you’re sure he’s there, not far behind. He doesn’t need to see you to track you. Your scent is enough.

Work Text:

Your lungs desperately suck in air as you run along the rough path. Your feet stumble over tree roots and scatter leaves. You can’t hear anything behind you but you’re sure he’s there, not far behind. He doesn’t need to see you to track you. Your scent is enough.

You should have known that something wasn’t quite right. You should have been more suspicious. But this is beyond the worst scenario you could have ever imagined.

Your foot catches on a raised root and you swear you can hear the sound of your bone breaking as you fall forward. You land heavily on the ground, sobbing as pain pushes through your defences to flood your nerves.

You try to get to your feet despite your pain but you freeze as you feel hot breath on your ear. You turn your head slowly, staring through tears into the golden eyes of your hunter. Those eyes are brimming with bloodlust. Sharp teeth reveal themselves in a triumphant, satisfied smile.

“Shuichi,” you gasp out, hoping that those familiar syllables will bring some humanity back into those eyes, but there is no flicker of recognition.

You still can’t believe that this nightmarish creature was just less than an hour ago, your intelligent but distant classmate Minamino Shuichi. The polite, quiet boy who never stepped out of line and minded his own business.

You were both in the botany club. This was supposed to be a field trip of sorts, so that you could both gather some rare plants for the greenhouse. You’d been flattered that Shuichi had asked you to come with him. You’d agreed without hesitation.

But the nice, quiet student was gone now. You could never have known that underneath the pretty mask of a normal teenager lurked a dark creature out of myth.

The fox licks your cheek with his wet tongue. Your tears flow faster. With your ankle broken you have no chance of outrunning him.

Not that you ever had one in the first place.

Soft fur brushes your cheek as the fox rubs his head almost affectionately against your skin. You try to push him away, anger briefly cutting through your fear and pain. He’s just playing with you now and that’s incredibly cruel.

The fox’s breaths are hot and excited. Your hands haven’t budged him an inch. He’s larger than a normal fox and his fur is unlike any fox you’ve ever seen. It’s as silver as the stars. Four tails wag behind him.

A paw shoves on your chest, knocking you back into the leaves. The fox stares down at you, victorious.

You close your eyes and wait, knowing there’s no way out of this.
