I held in my hand
a canvas banner
decorated with the maps
of roads and rivers
traversed so many times
setting sail for a place called prior
where I was told
I would receive
something more beautiful
and precious
than you.
And as this long campaign
stole away my secrecies
the desire to reveal them
was like a fever
high against my brow
where the trace of your tender touch
revealed destinations that were no longer mine
cut through red tape
in an age of sale.
Do I resent you?
There's so little of this fire left
because fire needs air to breath
and nothing makes sense
since your innocence
set me out to sea.
No.
I no longer dream
of a place called prior
with all its treasured ghosts
for the golden sunlight of a summer storm
