Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

It’s another day of worrying and building machines. Another day of endless nights, her heart pounding at the thought of never seeing her loving boyfriend again.

Feeling the cool wind softly blow through her thick clothing, Fuyumi rubbed an arm as she lay a simple, black leather glove on the wooden table. She saw half of her face in the reflection and gave a half-smile to herself, then went back to working on her latest idea.

“Where’s the other gear I put?” Fuyumi mumbled to herself, feeling her ponytail slap her face as she twisted her head around quickly. “I must’ve dropped it somewhere again! Oh dear, and that was my last one!”

Sighing, she sat on the small stool and looked up at the bright orange sky, which shifted to black as minutes passed. The white stars glowed and twinkled like fresh snow on grass. In the distance, possibly miles and miles away, she could many buildings hovering over trees and shielding fluffy clouds from her eyesight. This sight felt a blessing to see, and it relieved all of her stress for that brief moment of time.

Takami hasn’t been seen for days. People have been gossiping and saying that he eloped with somebody else. Others whisper that Shigaraki finally got ahold of those lovely, dark-red mechanical wings of his. Fuyumi shivered at the thought of Takami falling through the sky at high speeds, his bones cracking into pieces as he hit the cold pavement. What if that had actually happened and the news wouldn’t reach her until ten days later? How would she be able to handle that?

But she knew that wasn’t the case. He’s been busy being a workaholic and hasn’t been able to catch a break for ages. In her eyes, Takami saves people in every alleyway and every corner. Since he’s so fast at saving others, he’s been giving a very fitting name — Hawks, the Winged Hero.

And what did she mean by saving? Saving people from death? Saving people from debt? No, she meant saving people...by testing their crazy inventions. Takami was discovered in Fukuoka creating wings and a commission place has helped his dreams blossom ever since. When he came home, his t-shirt and bare arms were stained with oil stains and sticky gears. His eyebags became permanent. It looked like Frankenstein had possessed her boyfriend and would not give back his body even with a compromise!

On those days when he’s out of energy, Fuyumi would activate the coffee machine, hearing it crush up imported coffee beans from a nearby steam shop. Takami absolutely loved the fresh coffee she made for him, so she began to make it everyday before he went to work. He’d give her a quick hug before flying out. That hasn’t happened in a while.

Fuyumi looked down at her small blueprint, her glasses slipping slightly off her nose. Only one more gear and her gift would be complete. It’ll just need fitted afterwards. But she was tired from a hard day’s work and needed as much rest as she could get. While she didn’t want to sleep, her kind and tired heart didn’t fight it.
