Work Text:

“Papa!”

Blinking his eyes blearily, he feels the covers shift and searingly bright light invades his vision. Releasing a groan, he turns over to face the edge of his bed where he knows she will appear, all smiles and giggles. After a few seconds of silence, he slides his arm underneath him, rising to inspect the sunlit corner. By the time he’s registered that she’s not there, her tiny form is stumbling over the blankets and crawling into the space between him and Yuu, conspiratorially quiet. Once again, he turns, this time to face the giggling and excitable bundle of energy currently taking up space in the already tiny bed. She beams at him as she pokes his nose.

“Boop!”

“...”

Releasing a huff, she stamps her foot and almost falls over, before signalling for him to be quiet with a toothy smile. In one hand, she has the purple toy horn that they bought for her last Christmas, and she raises it to her lips, placing the open end near Yuu’s ear. With a breath….

HOOOOONK

...It takes a moment for his hearing to return, but the sound has Yuu stumbling out of bed, dragging both the quilt and girl with her. The resulting mess is a tangle of limbs, cloth and various household objects strewn about on the floor, as well as a collapsed bedside table. Muffled half curses can be heard coming from underneath it all and a delighted giggling wafts into the air through the thick doona. Yuu's form snakes under the blankets and he's certain that she's the one responsible for the extremely large shriek that rattles his eardrums once again. The blanket squirms and writhes like a dragon - the type that often appears in the bedtime stories they tell to her.

It's definitely Sunday morning.

Stifling a yawn, he reaches for the half-moon glasses hanging precariously on the edge of his bedside table, placing them groggily on the bridge of his nose. The world shifts into focus, edges sharpening and floaters disappearing into the peripherals. Ah, much better. The slightly battered, off-white clock on his bedside table flashes the time in bright red numbers on the worn and well cleaned surface. 8:30. With a groan, he stretches over to drag the covers back off the floor and back to their rightful place - the bed. Yuu's head pops up in an almost comedic manner, hair ruffled and messy from bed head and her face split wide open in a grin. Her cheeks are dusted with pink, eyes sparkling with mischief as she dives back down for another round of tummy raspberries. For a brief shining moment, a stray sunbeam lights a fire in her eyes, setting blaze to the deep, deep forest green of her irises and her hair shimmers like the depths of the ocean and everything comes crashing to a halt. His breath catches in his chest the same way it did when he first realised he was in love with her and this, he realises, this is the true meaning of bliss. A lazy summer morning. Laughter and joy surrounding him.

And he wouldn't trade it for the world.
