Work Text:
7.00 am
The alarm sounded at exactly 7.00 am, jolting Hoseok into consciousness.
“Fucking shit,” he mumbled as he hit the clock with more force than needed. A good reason to have an analog clock alarm was that it didn’t shatter easily, even when the owner never managed to push the snooze button on the first try but always succeeded in knocking it down into the floor. Hoseok decided to leave it there, sighing once his head touched the pillow.
Fucking mornings, fucking alarms and fucking responsabilties that kept him away from important things in life. Like his beauty sleep, his bed and, most importantly, the most huggable person in the whole world.
The little murmur coming from the other side of the bed made him smile, turning his head towards the still slump dozing beside him, finding the messy blond hair coming from under the covers the most endearing sight he had ever seen. “Honey,” he cooed, scooting closer to put an arm around the slim waist of his husband. “Good morning, my sunshine.”
“Fuck off,” was the response of the sweet love of his life, who tried to kick him and make him move away.
Hoseok chuckled, always loving his husband's adorable grumpiness in the morning. “That’s no way of treating the birthday boy,” he whispered into his ear, then peppering his soft cheeks with little kisses.
Yoongi stopped struggling, moving his head a little bit to the side and puckering his lips so Hoseok could kiss him properly. “Happy Birthday, Hobi.” He said between kisses, humming contently when he could feel his husband’s hand wandering under his nightshirt. “Now,” Yoongi gasped when Hoseok mouthed at his neck, fingers getting closer and closer to his chest, “ fuck off .” With a swift movement, he managed to take his husband off from over him, chuckling at the indignant noise that came from him.
“Why?” Hoseok whined, pouting at the back of Yoongi’s head who ignored him to make himself comfortable under the sheets.
“Saturday a.k.a. no work day for me. So bye bye.” Yoongi did a little wave from over his shoulder and then settled to continue sleeping, leaving Hoseok in shock and with a part of his body fully awake and unattended.
He huffed, knowing that he was behaving like a toddler that hadn’t got what he wanted instead of an adult who paid the bills. Bills that would never get paid if he didn’t move his ass right this instant.
With a final sigh, he began his routine. First, returning the clock to his original place and then moving to the bathroom connected to the master bedroom to take his morning shower. Usually, he would go for a quick run to wake his body up for a full day of classes at his studio, but time wasn’t on his side today.
He let the stream of water wash his frustrations away (and calm his boner down), silently cursing at the member of his staff who had gotten sick on a Saturday, making him work not only on his day off but also on his goddamn birthday. Being the owner of his own studio was a big responsibility, and if he wanted to keep its good name he had to make a few concessions. Even if it meant spending his morning and most of the afternoon surrounded by sweaty students instead of his family.
Hope World had been his dream since the moment he took his first dancing class. A dream that had continued even through his trainee phase, when he had thought that being an idol was the right path if he wanted to be a professional dancer. Luckily, he had realized that that wasn’t the life he yearned for. And right on time too, because the same day he left the dorms, scared and anxious, he met the person who made everything worth it.
“Bye, honey.” Hoseok kissed his husband’s pouty lips, fully knowing that the man was dead to the world until it was imperative for him to leave their comfy bed.
He kept looking at him for a while, eyes raking over the face that he knew so well that it was possible for him to describe every single detail with his eyes closed. From the cat-like eyes, adorned with long lashes, to the mole on the smoothness of his left cheek and the rosey lips that puckered in an adorable way when he slept on his side.
His Yoongi was the most beautiful person in the whole world and that fact always made him doubt if he was worthy enough to have him by his side.
Hoseok kissed him again, obviously he couldn’t resist, and then left the room as silently as possible, sending a last longing look to the warm cocoon of blankets and the precious man lying beneath them.
“Oh God, that’s good .”
Hoseok wasn’t a big fan of coffee, preferring tea instead, or a caffeinated beverage full of cream and other sweet ingredients that could hide the bitter taste; but his husband needed coffee like air and that’s why they were highly stoked with a great coffee machine and a huge variety of grains. He had to say, Yoongi had a point, because he didn’t know how he could survive mornings like this without a good cup of the dark liquid.
It was already 7.30, meaning he had to leave the house in the next few minutes if he wanted to make it on time to the studio to do a little bit of paperwork before his first class. He already had his travel mug prepared but, first, there was another important stop before he could leave the house for good. By far, the hardest goodbye.
On his tiptoes, he walked to the few stairs that separated the bedrooms from the rest of the house, feeling himself smiling already at the door decorated with stickers and drawings. Gently, he opened it, his eyes adapting to the semi darkness provided by the heavy curtains, luckily lessened by the night light on a corner of the room, allowing him to see the sleeping form on the small bed.
Hoseok kneeled in front of his son, not even fighting the fond smile that appeared on his face once he saw his baby sucking his thumb while hugging his bunny plushie against his chest. It was a bad habit that they were patiently trying to eradicate. Slowly, he took the thumb out, softly chuckling when the boy frowned in his sleep but didn’t wake up at the treatment, only puckering his cute lips. So alike to Yoongi that it was almost surreal that they didn’t share the same blood.
“See you later, Kookie-yah.” He whispered, pressing a kiss on his forehead and trying to carve into his memory the soft smell of his son to give him strength during the day until he could see him again.
8.00 am
Yoongi heard Hoseok leave Jungkook’s bedroom and then walking down the hallway, probably to grab some coffee in the kitchen, before the front door finally closed behind him. He only let himself sigh in relief when he heard the garage doors closing and even waited another ten minutes in case his husband forgot something. Only then he jumped off the bed and went to the bathroom to take a quick shower.
If Hoseok could see him now, waking up at ass-crack of dawn, being proactive and all that shit; he would be so impressed. But the idea was to surprise him, so unfortunately this lively part of him would remain unknown.
It had all begun the moment one of the professors called to inform him that he had lost his battle against the heaviest cold ever seen and that he wouldn’t be able to give his classes the next day. Poor Hoseok had been disappointed to have to work on his birthday, but there was nothing that the poor man could do after trying everything to fight against sickness to no avail.
Yoongi had tried to comfort him by making promises about a nice dinner, massages and even trying something spicier in bed. And Hoseok had cheered up a little, but his smile still looked half hearted, a clear sign that Yoongi had to do something about it.
The plan was quite simple actually, considering that he had only had half a day to organize everything. It would only be a small surprise party with their closest friends and lots of food. Hoseok’s last class ended at three in the afternoon, meaning he would get home probably forty minutes later taking into account that he had to close the studio on his own. That left Yoongi with almost eight hours to clean, buy the decorations, go to the supermarket, return home, decorate the place, put the snacks on the table, take a shower and wait for everyone to arrive. Luckily, he had his friend’s help because it would be impossible to do everything while taking care of his really active three year old son.
His beautiful, adorable and definitely not a morning bird three year old son.
“Kookie?” Yoongi softly called, gently shushing him when the boy slightly startled, his tiny arms hugging his plushie against his chest. “Hey, it’s just me.” He patiently waited for the little boy to look at his surroundings, remember where he was and with whom.
The baby blinked at him, too sleepy to keep his eyes fully open. “Yoonie?” He said, pouty lips forming a little o when he yawned.
“Jungkookie sleepy? Uh?” The boy nodded, rubbing one of his eyes with a small fist that Yoongi felt too tempted to kiss but refraining from doing so until he was fully awake. “But it’s time to wake up, Kookie-yah. Remember what day it is? What we have to do today?” The baby frowned, tilting his head in such a Hobi manner that his father couldn’t stop himself from chuckling fondly. “Something about...candles?”
The boy suddenly perked up, excitedly jumping on the bed. “Hobi brrday !”
Yoongi chuckled, surrounding his son’s small form with both arms when the boy jumped onto him like a baby koala.
9.00 am
It took almost thirty minutes before they could finally begin with the cake. Yoongi, proud of his patience even though he had only had a small cup of coffee while making sure that Jungkook ate his breakfast, was holding the bowl with steady hands so the boy could mix the cake batter. He was aware that giving Jungkook that task was delaying the whole process but he didn’t have the heart to deny anything to those doe eyes when he proudly said to Yoongi not to worry because he saw The British Bake Off and knew how to make a cake.
That’s how they ended in this situation, behind schedule and with a three year old boy explaining to him every single step as if they were in front of the cameras.
“You have to do it like this, Yoonie, or it gonna taste like eggs and Hobi don’t like eggs.”
“Mhm,” hummed Yoongi, eyes trained on the clock. He calculated that, if the cake took an hour to cook, he could clean the house while Jungkook watched his cartoons and then they could both go to the store while it cool down enough to start decorating when they came back; knowing that the decoration process would take at least half an hour more if Jungkook had any say on it.
“Done!”
Yoongi looked down at the obviously not well mixed batter but still cheered. “Good job, Kookie! That looks so good!” The boy giggled when his father kissed him on the cheek, right under the place where he had flour smudged. “Now, why don’t you brush your teeth while I put this in the oven. Then we can go to buy the decorations.”
“You do it, Yoonie? No help?” The little boy asked with uncertainty, as if he thought the grown ass man before him could not be trusted with such an important task.
“I’ll try my best, baby. I swear. No egg taste.”
Jungkook nodded then, lifting his arms up so Yoongi could leave him on the floor. “No eggs!” He shouted over his shoulder before running to the bathroom.
Yoongi kept looking at the empty hall with a dotting smile on his face.
Sometimes it felt unreal that this was his life, expecting to wake up in his one-room apartment on the worst side of Seoul (still too expensive for his humble bank account) doing weird jobs to keep himself afloat while chasing a dream that looked still too impossible. But everyday was a new statement that this was real. The house in his name was real, also the big bank account and his songs being played on the radio. The man beside him, wearing a matching ring, was indeed not a product of his imagination; the warmth in those expressive eyes too tangible to be anything but illusory.
And now, after years filled with red stamps all over the adoption papers they had carefully completed, him being bossed by a three year old boy felt like the pinnacle of his existence.
He continued stirring the small mess left behind, then carefully transferred it to the pan and put it in the oven.
“Kookie! Wanna watch Cocomong while I clean?”
Small feet stomping against the wooden floor was the only answer he got before he heard the TV being turned on. He patted himself on the shoulder, of course Jungkook would never say no to Cocomong.
Sneakily, he took a photo of the little boy engulfed by the wide range of pillows on the big couch, eyes trained on the TV, absentmindedly sucking his thumb; and sent it to Hoseok.

He’s so cute
We have to do something about that thumb though

Hoseokie:
Seulgi came early to cover the Zumba class for me
She said it was my birthday gift
Yoonie:
A true friend
Hoseokie:
Why are YOU on the phone?
Shouldn’t you be sleeping till late?
Yoongi cursed. Of course his husband, who usually had to take him out of bed by force, would suspect something if he was up so early.
Yoonie:
Kookie woke up hungry and demanding bretfast
A big appetite like his Daddy
Hoseokie:
Did he notice I wasn’t there? He asked for me?
Yoonie:
He asked where his Hobi was
Hoseokie:
༼ಢ_ಢ༽
You told him what I told you yesterday?
Yoonie:
…
Hoseokie:
Baaaaabe…
Yoonie:
No, it’s embarrassing
Hoseokie:
Yoongiiiii (。ŏ﹏ŏ)
Yoonie:
Okay!
Yes!
I told him you were in his heart
Hoseokie:

Yoonie:
You literally left two hours ago
Hoseokie:
Doesn’t matter
I miss my baby bun
And my kitty cat
Yoonie:
I told you not to call me that!
Hoseokie:
Oh, but in the privacy of our bedroom...( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Yoonie:
This conversation ends here
Hoseokie:
I have to go
Kiss my baby for me
And send me a photo of your sweet ass on pyjamas
Yoongi:
You’re unbelievable
Hoseokie:
Please ◕ㅅ◕
For the birthday boy?
Yoongi huffed, taking his eyes off the phone to see if his son was still engrossed in his cartoons before opening the camera app.

Yoongi smiled at the kissy face his husband was sending to the camera, still cheerful despite the fact he was at work on a Saturday morning. On his birthday.
Sometimes it felt unreal that this was his life, but not even in his wildest dreams he could make up such a perfect family
11.15 am
“Yoonie?”
“Mmm?” Yoongi wondered if fondant was something he really wanted to deal with when he arrived home or if covering the whole cake with whipped cream was a good idea.
“Who coming?”
“To the party?” The little boy nodded. “Well, a few people from your father’s workplace. Seulgi, Moonbyul, Woozi, Wonho--”
“Uncle Ki-un?”
“Yes, Kihyun is coming.”
“Joonie coming?”
Yoongi smiled down at the whipped cream can in his hand. “Yes, baby, Joonie is coming too.” He pretended he didn’t see the blush on his son’s cheeks when he turned around to place the can on the shopping car, or mentioned how suddenly his husband’s birthday theme was Under the Sea because Hobi likes water, Yoonie . He refrained from stating the fact that a certain tall blond with deep dimples was also a huge enthusiast of marine animals. Instead, he continued grabbing every balloon, serpentine, banner and decoration that his son’s chubby finger pointed at.
Jungkook’s crush was frankly adorable. He trailed behind the taller man like a lost puppy, giving him presents in the form of drawings and toys, talking non stop about his day and then dozing off in the man’s arms. It was understandable, actually. Namjoon had been their lawyer through the adoption process and one of the first people from their near circle that had met him. Beside his parents, his Joonie was a familiar face in the middle of unknown people. The superhero that had helped him leave the orphanage because he was scary at court and used big words in front of the judge.
“Jinnie is coming too,” he added, “and Jiminie.”
The boy brightened at the mention of Namjoon’s husband and their son, Jungkook’s friend from day one. Seokjin was a baker who made the bestest cookies in the all world , according to Jungkook, and Yoongi was kind of regretting not taking his offer to make the cake when he pushed the cart to the insanely big decoration aisle.
Jungkook looked pensive for a second, staring down at the already full cart. “Jinnie coming.”
Yoongi frowned. “Yes? Aren’t you happy?”
Jungkook turned his eyes to him, frowning a little bit. “We need mo’ food.” He murmured in all seriousness, making Yoongi lose it in the middle of the cake decorating section.
2.50 pm
“I’m here!”
Seokjin entered the living room, arms full of bags and looking a lot like Yoongi’s salvation.
“Oh thank God!” He tried to escape the myriad of streamers that glued to him like tentacles. “The cake is a disaster, the whipped cream in a can doesn’t work for decoration.”
“Bakery 101.” Thank God for those unnecessary wide shoulders and all those hours kneading that gave Jin the strength to lift him up from the floor or he would have stayed there forever. "Don't worry, I'll take care of it."
“And the balloons, hyung, the balloons. They’re everywhere .”
“Yes, I can see that.” He looked around at the fake starfishes adorning the snack table, the tulle used as a tablecloth and reminiscing the colors of the sea, the crackers shaped as fishes and the cupcakes decorated with scales and mermaid tails. “I didn’t know Hobi liked the ocean.”
“He doesn’t.” They exchanged a meaningful look.
“Jungkook?”
“Jungkook.”
“Well, I’m sure my husband is going to love it. He’s a sucker for this kind of thing.”
“Wow! That’s so cool!” Namjoon’s excited voice came from the front door. Probably talking about the paper lanterns he had hanged from the curtains railing that looked like jellyfishes.
Maybe he went a little overboard.
"Speaking of Rome…" Seokjin winked at him, turning around at the same time his husband entered the room with a shopping bag in one hand and a happy toddler in the other.
"Appa! There's balloons! A-and mummy bears!"
Seokjin let out a dramatic gasp, taking his son from Namjoon's arms. "Gummy bears?! Oh my God, where?" He gasped again when the little boy pointed with a chubby finger at the table that Yoongi had worked so hard setting up for the last hour.
He had never respected party planners so much in his whole life.
"This looks amazing, hyung. I love the theme this year."
"Oh, I bet you do." Yoongi said, sarcastically, still trying to clean up the mess he had left on the floor. "Help me with this, Joon-ah. Use those long limbs and hang this on the walls."
Namjoon’s comical face when he put the huge amount of streamers in his arms would have made him laugh if he weren’t so stressed out.
“Uncle Yoonie!”
“Hey, cutie.” Yoongi kissed his nephew’s dark locks, tickling him on his little tummy and causing the boy to giggle like a mad man while he tried to cover himself from the attack. “I think Kookie is in his room. You wanna go?”
Jimin nodded, wriggling on his father’s arms until the man left him on the floor so he could run as fast as his legs would let him.
“So, how can I help?”
Yoongi sighed. “I don’t know. Nothing is done. The table is not ready, the cake needs to be saved, I bought a lot of ornaments and I don’t know what to do with them. And it’s already--,” he took his cellphone and gasped, “Fuck! It’s almost three! Everyone is about to arrive and I didn’t even take a shower!”
“Okay, Yoongi, breathe.” Jin grabbed him by the shoulders, a stern expression on his handsome face. “This already looks incredible, especially taking into account that you organized it in less than a day. You did everything you could. Let us help, okay? Take a warm bath, wear one of those jeans that Hobi likes so much because they make your ass look divine and then have a drink with me and Joon. Okay?”
Yoongi bit his lip. He wanted to discuss, tell them that they shouldn’t be doing all the work for him, but his head and feet were pounding and he felt filthy . Maybe Jin really was God’s send.
“Okay. But tell me if you need anything.”
“I’m sure we can do it, hyung.” Namjoon said from the floor where he was carefully disentangling every streamer. “I mean, the kids are playing and Jin hyung has to deal with my clumsy ass everyday. I’m sure he can solve any mess.”
Seokjin sent a flying kiss to his husband who happily pretended to catch in the air and put it inside his pocket.
“You’re disgusting.” He scowled at them, but deep inside loving their exchange.
Seokjin pointed at him with an accusatory finger. “Don’t you dare, Min whipped for my husband Yoongi. Go to shower. You stink.” Seokjin wrinkled his nose, leaving the room with his head high and the amused chuckles of his husband as background music.
3.45pm
Hoseok drummed his fingers against the steering wheel to the rhythm of the music.
He let out a sudden chuckle when his eyes looked to the rearview mirror and caught sight of the colorful balloons placed on the backseat. Despite his initial reservations, he had a really good time giving classes through the morning and part of the afternoon. It was endearing to see the excited expressions of the children when they found out it was his Birthday, or the noonas pinching his cheeks and promising to bring lots of homemade treats to the next class. They managed to buy him a cake and those smileys balloons he liked so much.
It had been a great day after all. Even greater now that he was finally coming home to receive smooches from his family.
With the car finally inside the garage, he let himself take a moment, taking a deep breath and letting his head fall back against the car seat.
He checked his body up. Taking into account the tension in his shoulders, the slight pain in his legs after dancing for hours in a row, the pull on his inner thigh that he should massage as soon as he could be horizontal in bed. The dampness on the back of his hoodie, consequence of not properly drying off his hair after a quick shower at the studio, and on his shoes, because of the rain even when he just had to walk to his car.
He felt the subtle burn in his arms, the result of making Jungkook fly the night before even when Yoongi told him not to strain himself.
He could almost feel the ghost of his husband’s lips against his neck when he whispered happy birthday to him at exactly 12 am.
With a renewed fervor he got out of the car, deciding to leave his presents and belongings in the car. He had more important things to do; like kissing his husband and making his son fly like a plane only to hear his squeals.
Life is good , he thought to himself before opening the door that connected the garage to the house.
The lights were out, the cloudy day making everything look even more gloomy. Hoseok smiled to himself when he imagined his family cuddling on the couch, taking advantage of the rainy day to have one of those imperative naps Yoongi liked so much.
He left his shoes at the door, calmly going to the living room in search of the only boys in his life.
“Yoongi?” He whispered, frowning a little bit when he saw that the black outs were down, making everything even darker. “Hey, babe. Are you h--?”
“SURPRIIIIIIIIIISE!”
“HOLY SHIT!” Hoseok swore he had never jumped so high in his whole life, making the fall even more painful for his backside. “Oh my GOD!” He winced, a hand against his chest. “You fucking scared me!”
“Hobi! No bad words!” Hoseok followed Jungkook’s voice, finding him in Namjoon’s arms (not surprising at all), looking as adorable as ever with a pointy party hat and his short arms crossed over his chest. “Bad words are for notty boys.”
The sight of his son made him forget about any pain on his backbone, his only objective having the little boy in his arms. “Kookie-yaah~~,” he opened his arms as wide as he could, eagerly standing up to make his way towards the boy. “Hobi’s sorry.” Hoseok pouted at him, making grabby hands.
Jungkook squinted his eyes at him, trying to keep his facade, but rapidly relenting, stretching his small arms towards the man who rapidly held him against his chest and peppered his whole face with kisses. “Hobi! Tickles!” Jungkook squealed, making everyone in the room coo at the adorable image.
“Okay, you two. Tone it down.” A big hand appeared in his line of vision, reaching to stop the hat from falling down Jungkook’s head, and making him cease his attack so he could marvel at the beautiful man that his husband was.
“Babe.” Hoseok visibly sighed when Yoongi smiled at him, his cute teeth in full display, his cheeks looking fuller than ever.
“Surprise.” Yoongi leaned forward to connect their lips in a gentle and long kiss, Jungkook sandwiched between them, nuzzling against Hoseok’s neck, probably smelling the vanilla shower gel he liked so much.
It always surprised him how easy it was for him to forget his surroundings whenever Yoongi was around. Since the moment they met, to their wedding day till this date the spell his husband had on him had never stopped. Almost like a movie, when the camera zooms in on the characters, the background out of focus, the time suddenly slows down, making every movement look languid but even more intense. He could almost hear the cliche (but quite effective) music, covering up every sound outside their little bubble.
A lovely bubble that obviously popped the moment their (soon ex) friend had enough of their sweet moment.
“We can leave if you like, but I’m taking the cake with me.”
Yoongi scoffed into Hoseok’s mouth, rolling his eyes at Seokjin’s antics. “Touch that cake and I’ll sell your secret songpyeon recipe.” He calmly said without even looking back at his friend, fixing Hoseok’s hoodie instead, a half smiled grazing his face.
Seokjin loudly gasped, Jimin immediately taking his face between chubby hands and asking if ‘Appa okay? Appa ‘urt?’ , and then proceeded to complain about ungratefulness, bratty dongsaengs and ‘Joonie, hold my Jiminie’.
Hoseok laughed, looking around at the various smiling faces silently circling them. “Wow! I--wow. Hi.”
They all laughed at his lack of words, taking pity on him and starting to engulf him in hugs and congratulate him for his birthday and adorable family. He felt his eyes water when the studio staff took out a Kaws gift box accompanied by a huge bag full of letters from every student of theirs, the tears almost coming out when Moonbyul showed him a calendar where each one of them had taken one of his classes so he could have the next week free.
“Nonono,” he shook his head, “you can’t. C’mon.”
“We can and we did .” Moonbyul said, rocking Jungkook in her arms while her wife Yongsun made funny faces at him. “I don’t want to see your face at the studio, capische?”
“Moon…”
“Don’t give me that sh--,” Yongsun cleared her throat, interrupting her mid sentence. “Shirt. Just take the gift, okay?”
“But-”
“Jungkook-ah!” Yongsun sinsonged at the little boy. “Aren’t you happy that your Hobi is going to be at home all next week with you?”
Oh, what a low move.
Jungkook's doe eyes widened. “All day? With Gukkie?” He turned his hopeful gaze at him, to make sure that he had heard right.
And of course, what could he do if not give his little boy whatever he wanted?
“Yes, Hobi’s going to stay with Gukkie all day.”
Jungkook raised his arms in victory, cheering out loud along Moonbyul who started jumping excitedly with him.
Hoseok laughed, choosing to ignore the satisfied smirk on Yongsun’s face. That woman was too smart for everyone’s good.
Suddenly, the lights went off, his heart beating really hard in his chest until someone started singing the Happy Birthday and Yoongi appeared with a big cake in his hands. The candles illuminating his gleeful face, making him look like a vision.
Damn, he had miss him. Maybe a whole week at home was not such a bad idea if he could see that face every hour of the day. He could convince him to work from home and spend it together with Kookie, and maybe, when it was nap time for the boy, they could get freaky or--
“Hobi! Wish!”
He blinked at his son, realizing that he had spent the last few seconds looking at his husband in silent amazement instead of doing his birthday duty.
Yoongi chuckled. “C’mon, babe. Make a wish.” He slightly wiggled the cake in front of his face, earning a shout from Seokjin to ‘not make a freaking mess ’.
Hoseok looked at him, the man that always so patiently gave him time and space, the only person beside his family that he would trust with his life. Who taught him not to be afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve because he will always protect him no matter what. Who showed him how being irrefutable in love and being loved in return felt like.
Then he turned his gaze towards the little boy not so patiently wiggling in Namjoon’s arms (not gonna ask how he managed to get into them so fast), his brave boy. Till this day, a year later, it still broke his heart to think about all the things the poor boy had gone through before he ended with them; but his Kookie was stronger than anyone he knew. Seeing how he slowly and steadily started leaving his shell, trusting in them to do even the smallest things for him, realizing that he was not alone anymore.
Hoseok looked at his friends, circling his little family like a protective blanket, as always, so genuinely happy for him.
Before he could start tearing up right there and then, he closed his eyes and made his wish.
9pm
“Are you sure you don’t want the balloons?”
Namjoon visibly perked up, looking like a little kid with his arms full of bags of gummy sharks, jellyfish paper lanterns and plastic containers with ocean themed food.
“Don’t. You. Dare.” Seokjin appeared from the kitchen, rubbing his hands against his designer pants. “I swear to God, Kim Namjoon, if I see those balloons in the car I would personally pop them and leave the remains under your pillow.”
Namjoon gasped. “You’ll Godfather me?”
“Oh, I really will. Now, let’s get home.” The older went to the couch where Jimin and Jungkook had fallen asleep after playing around for hours, carefully taking his son. “Jiminie is going to wake us up in a few hours if this storm continues.”
“Still scared of the rain?” Hoseok frowned, not liking the idea of his nephew having a hard time.
“Yeah.” Namjoon sighed, rubbing the boy’s back when they got near him. “Especially if it's too heavy and accompanied by thunders. It brings back bad memories.” He pecked his husband’s lips, as if sensing the worriedness coming from him. “But we’re working on it.”
Seokjin smiled at him, leaning a little bit on his side before turning towards Hoseok. “Jungkook seems like he’s making huge progress. He didn’t even look scared when the lights went out for the cake.”
Hoseok felt his chest pumped out with pride. “I think he’s finally realizing that this is it, his final destination. That we’re never gonna give him back.”
“It’s a process.” Namjoon said. “After moving around so much in so little time, it’s understandable that they need to adjust to their new reality. But I think that him being comfortable around so many people it’s irrefutable proof that he feels safe with you.”
Seokjin nodded. “I agree. He recognizes you as family, Seok. He helped Yoongi to organize all this because he loves you.”
Hoseok gulped, trying to fight the knot that formed in his throat. “I guess you’re right. Sometimes it’s hard for him to show affection but we’re getting there.”
“I’ve never doubted it.” Namjoon patted him on the back, a reassuring smile on his face. "He'll know when the moment is right, and when it comes you'll realize that everything was worth it."
Hoseok looked down, not wanting his friend to see how much his words were affecting him.
“I think the rain stopped for a little bit.” Said Seokjin while looking through the window. “We should get going because we left the car around the corner.”
“I can bring it here if you want.” Hoseok offered.
“Don’t worry. It would be faster if we just walk.”
“Thank you for everything,” he hugged Namjoon and then did the same with Seokjin, careful not to disturb his precious cargo. “Send me a text to know you arrived.”
He waved at them from the door, keeping an eye on them until they turned the corner.
He made sure that everything was locked and that there was anything around to clean before going to the kitchen.
“They left?”
“Yeah.”
“I had a tupper of crackers for Namjoon.”
Hoseok snorted. “I’m sure Jin would have divorce him if he took more things to their house.”
Yoongi chuckled, his back still turned towards him while he put the last dishes in the dishwasher. “Well, we have a comfy guest room if he needs somewhere to stay.” Hoseok hugged him from behind, hiding his face in the other’s neck and sighing. “Tired?”
“Kind of. You?”
“I don’t know how I’m even standing.”
Hoseok laughed, turning his husband around so he could face him. His eyes raked over the lovely face, a hand brushing his soft hair before caressing his cheek. “Thank you. Really. It was the best surprise I ever had.”
Yoongi visibly relaxed, adorably nuzzling his hand. “You deserve it.” He looked at him, his gaze full of love and adoration. “I love you,” he softly said, as if it was a secret between them. As if the world couldn’t see how smitten they’re for each other.
“I love you too. So much you have no idea.”
Yoongi was the first one to lean in, lips meeting in the middle, hands searching for the other. Sometimes words could fail them, their meaning not enough when they tried to communicate the extents of their love for each other. What could you say to the person that made your life better by only existing? The main reason your house felt like a home?
“I swear I had the intention to give you the blowjob of your life, but I’m tired as fuck.”
Well, that was a strange but effective choice of words.
Hoseok giggled, closing his arms tighter around Yoongi’s waist. “I really love that idea but I’m afraid I’ll fall asleep before you even touch my dick.”
Yoongi wrinkled his nose. “Not really into somnophilia.”
“Just let me be the little spoon and I’ll be happy.”
Yoongi dramatically sighed, acting as if he was just being asked to give up one of his favorite things in the world (which kind of was because he loved being the little spoon). “Okay. Anything for you, babe.”
Hoseok did a little cheer, aware of the little boy sleeping in the living room.
With a final peck they separate, Yoongi going to check the backyard door and Hoseok to pick up Jungkook from the couch.
“Hey, Kookie.” He whispered when the boy slightly whined. “I’m going to put you into your bed. Okay?”
He smiled at Yoongi when the man entered the living room, immediately going to them so he could press his lips into Jungkook’s soft hair. They both went to Jungkook’s bedroom, Yoongi turning the light off in their path.
Yoongi stopped him before he could pass the door. “Let me take those pants off, they look filthy.”
The movement made Jungkook jolt in his sleep, opening his eyes a little bit. “It’s okay, Kookie. Yoonie is gonna clean this for you.” Hoseok said. “Go back to sleep.”
Jungkook sighed at the sound of his voice, almost melting in his arms when he rubbed his back with soothing motions.“ ‘Kay. Goodnight, Daddy.” He whispered before peacefully closing his eyes.
And just like that, the world suddenly stopped. A single word awakening a commotion of emotions inside of them.
Hoseok stiffened, heart beating fast, wide eyes meeting Yoongi’s that were in a similar state. “Yoongi,” he said in a soft voice, his eyes starting to tear up. “Did you--?” A sob cut his question, he held their baby’s head against his neck with a trembling hand, as if he couldn’t believe everything was real. “Did you---did you hear that?”
Yoongi nodded, muffling his own sobs with his palm, tears falling on their own accord.
He hugged his husband’s waist, both silently crying in front of their son’s bedroom, with the sleeping boy sandwiched between them.
They let the tears clean all those sleepless nights filled with uncertainty, not knowing if the nursery would finally have a permanent occupant, if their dream would finally come true. Mornings refreshing their inbox, checking their mailbox, expressions full of sadness everytime they returned with their hands empty. Hours and hours on the phone with social workers who put the rejected stamp on their profile the moment they realized they were a same sex couple. The surprise visits, the scrutiny on their private lives and their home that they had worked so hard on. Then, the baby boy who was too tiny for his age, a survivor at four years old.
Everything disappeared, all the bitter memories being left in the past. The weight of his sleeping child in his arms and the dampness of his husband’s happy tears the only things that mattered the most.
Maybe birthday wishes had some magic in them.
Maybe they really came true if you wished hard enough.
FIN.
