Work Text:
“Hey Avdol, you're a fortune teller, right?”
Avdol is sitting on a couch in the hotel lobby, reading a book.
“That I am.” He says without looking away from his book.
“So can you read my fortune?”
He looks up from his book to make eye contact with a smiling Polnareff.
“Why?” he asks. “You’ve never really been interested in any of that stuff before.”
“I know, I know,” Polnareff casually sits down next to him, like they hadn't been fighting a week ago.
“But you know, recently I’ve been feeling kinda-”
He sighs as he puts his hand over Avdol’s shoulder, trying to put his thoughts into words.
“I’ve been feeling kinda insecure about the future. Like, will I ever find the man who killed my sister? Will we even be able to defeat DIO? And I just-”
He lets out another sigh. Avdol understands that something really is troubling him.
“Don't worry about the future. We’ll be fine, I know it.” he says as he closes his book to look at the man beside him.
Polnareff glances at him before looking at the ceiling.
“I’ve also been feeling somewhat lonely these days.” he mentions.
“You're on a trip with 4 other guys and you feel lonely?” Avdol teases him a little.
“I don't know what this feeling is, actually.” Polnareff doesn't seem to notice the teasing. “I just feel.. empty.”
“Sorry that I’m pouring myself out on you. I just, I needed to tell someone about this.” he adds.
“It's fine. I can read your fortune.” Avdol finally agrees.
“For real?” Polnareff’s face lights up as he looks at him. He nods.
The two move over to the hotel room that Mr. Joestar and Avdol share. Thankfully, Mr. Joestar is out doing something else, so they can do their thing in peace.
“I actually have never had my fortune read. How does it even look like? Are you gonna read my palm?” Polnareff asks excitedly.
“I can read your palm if you want. Though I was thinking of pulling some cards for you instead.” Avdol explains as he takes out his tarot cards.
“Oh, tarot cards? Aren't those the things our stands are named after?”
“Correct!” Avdol smiles as he sits down on the floor behind the coffee table. Polnareff follows his lead and sits down on the other side.
“I wanna see the Silver Chariot card!” he exclaims like a child.
“You mean The Chariot.” Avdol corrects him as he looks through the cards. “It's the 7th card in the Major Arcana.”
“Lucky number!” Polnareff notes happily.
After a while, Avdol finds it from his deck and gives it to him.
“Whoa, it looks so cool!” He says as he looks at it with a smile. There's a warrior standing inside a chariot, with two sphinxes in front of it. He quite likes the design actually.
“What does it mean?” he asks.
“The Chariot is a card of strength, determination, willpower.” Avdol explains. “It means you will achieve your goals if you take action.”
“No wonder my stand is called Silver Chariot.” Polnareff says happily as he gives the card back to him.
“Can I also see your card? The uhh- Magician’s Red?” he asks.
“The Magician.” Avdol corrects him. “It's the first card in the Major Arcana.” He adds. Polnareff nods like he understands something.
“Here you go.” Avdol gives the card to him once he finds it in the deck. Polnareff takes it immediately.
On the card there's a man holding one hand up in the air and pointing down at something with the other hand. Above his head there's an infinity symbol.
“Hey, he kinda looks like you.” Polnareff points out. “Makes sense actually. Aren't you a magician as well?” he asks.
Avdol chuckles.
“I'll take that as a compliment.” he says as he takes the card back from Polnareff.
“The Chariot and The Magician are quite similar actually,” Avdol says as he shuffles the cards. “both of them suggest action to be taken in order to reach your goals.”
Polnareff only nods, unable to make any intelligent comments on the topic.
“Well, let's read your fortune now.” Avdol decides.
“Yes! What we came here for actually.” Polnareff shifts on the floor.
“Do you want to pick the cards yourself?” Avdol asks.
“You're the one reading my fortune. I think you should pick them.”
Avdol nods as he lays the cards down on the coffee table, evenly spreading them out. By the way he handles the cards, Polnareff can tell he’s got experience in dealing with cards.
“Hmm.. let's pick four cards for you.” Avdol says to himself before taking 4 cards out of the spread. However, he doesn't reveal the cards yet, keeping them face down.
“This one is your current situation, this one means something that isn't important right now, this one means something that is important right now, and this last one is the near future.” he explains as he points on the cards. Polnareff nods quickly, eager to see what the cards are.
“Your current situation is..” Avdol says as he turns the first card around.
“Nine of Wands. Interesting.”
“What does it mean?” Polnareff asked.
“It means you are fighting a battle, yet it looks like you have taken too much damage already amd might need a rest soon.” Avdol explains.
“Wh-what does that mean?” Polnareff asks again.
“It means you're currently feeling quite worn out and tired. You should let your thoughts rest.” Avdol explains again. Polnareff thinks about it, but comes to the conclusion that he has to agree.
“The second card of yours is..” Avdol says as he reveals the card.
“Four of Cups. It means that right now, you shouldn't reject new opportunities that present themselves to you.” he explains.
Polnareff nods again. Had he been too closed off recently? Maybe, but he promises himself to be more open for now.
“Two of Pentacles? Hmm.” Avdol says as he reveals the third card.
“This means you should take time for yourself and let yourself be more free and playful.” he adds.
Polnareff is actually quite impressed by Avdol and his ability to read the cards like that. He also remembers to take the advice of the card.
“Now the last card, your near future..” Avdol says as he flips over the card.
“Oh.”
“What is it?” Polnareff asks. “Is it something bad?”
“No.” Avdol states. “Two of Cups. It's actually a very nice card.”
“Oh? Tell me more.”
“Two of Cups symbolizes attraction. It means that in the near future, someone might ask you out on a date.”
“Whoa! That's some really good news!” Polnareff smiles widely.
There's a small silence between the two before Avdol decides to speak up.
“It's me.” he says.
“What?”
“It's me who's gonna ask you out on a date. Jean Pierre Polnareff, will you go out with me?” he looks at him.
Polnareff is at loss of words as he only blinks at first.
“Wh- yes! Yes! Oh my-” he says as he covers his mouth.
“Of course Avdol, I’d love to go out with you.” He adds with a smile as he takes his hand. Avdol smiles back.
“Well what are we waiting for? Let's get going.” he says as he stands up.
“R-right now?” Polnareff asks as he stands up as well, hitting his leg against the coffee table in the process.
“Yeah! We got this whole evening to ourselves. Or were you planning on doing anything else?”
Polnareff shakes his head.
“Right. Do you have a place where you wanna take me?” he says as he takes Avdol’s hand.
“Well, I would be lying if I said I hadn't been looking at some restaurants around here.”
Polnareff giggles in excitement - something that Avdol finds extremely adorable.
“Gosh, Avdol. I love you.”
“I love you too, Jean.”
