Chapter Text
A FEW THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT FOR THE STORY, PLEASE READ.
Some POVs will be present tense (for action and dramatic purposes) and some will be past tense. I’ll mark which ones are which. Please excuse any tense mistakes, that’s one thing I struggle with a lot.
In a previous fic, I created a shared agency between Deku and Shoto that employs heroes without quirks. This is the one I’m using in this fic as well. The agency is called HCS. (Don’t ask lol)
In this fic, Dabi is confirmed to be Touya Todoroki.
Kirishima’s POV (Past)
“BakugoOoOoooOo wake up.” I whined, though it was un-manly.
“Shut up, sh!tty-hair.” Bakugo snarled, still half asleep.
I dragged him downstairs for breakfast, him grumbling, me hoping he didn’t blow me up.
That’s the morning I wish we had.
But, of course, that’s not how two pro-heroes can live.
Bakugo’s POV (Past)
Kirishima and I woke to the sound of the alarm at the station. We, as firefighters (fire can DIE), sleep at the station for the weekend shift. We knew what to do, we had lots of practice. Our eyes shot open, allowing one quick glance at each other across the small bit of floor that separated our stiff beds. Then we jumped up and raced (I always beat sh!tty-hair) to the fire pole. We never know how dangerous the fire will be, so even though we have strong quirks that should protect us, we say goodbye at the bottom of the firepole. It’s very brief, but we say it anyway.
“Goodbye, Katsuki.”
“Goodbye, Kiri,” I replied.
We shoved on our gear as quickly as possible while Backdraft (A/N Backdraft is the firefighter hero, I had to look up his name) yelled at us and the extras.
“Shoto and Dekus’ agency is already there, but the fire is too big for them alone!”
Sh!tty-hair looked at me, a look that said that maybe our goodbyes would be for real this time.
“Get to your trucks! Drivers, you’re going to UA High!”
F-ck.
This was one problem I couldn’t solve by blowing it up.
Kirishima’s POV (Past)
I can handle a lot of things. This... this was different. UA is the place I felt like I could be myself. It’s where I met Bakugo. And if Todoroki, with his quirk, needed help from our agency... I looked at Katsuki, inhaled sharply, and readied myself for what was to come.
We ran to our truck. Besides Bakugo, I’m fairly certain that I was the only one in our truck who went to UA. To them, this was just another dangerous job. But to me, it’s so much more.
The ride there was torture. Bakugo must have noticed my body language, because he laced his fingers through mine. He was wearing protective gloves made specifically for him by Mei Hatsume. His quirk being to blow things up isn’t really ideal for fighting fire, so we had to have a way that it would stay contained.
The media was confused when he joined this agency. Only I and a few others knew why. Shortly after graduating from UA, when Katsuki was well on his way to becoming a top hero, his parents perished in a fire. Bakugo went under the radar for a long time. When he finally resurfaced, he filed an application for every firefighting agency there was. Backdraft was the only one who would take his quirk even after he had protective gloves. I gave up my career to join him, not that it was much of a sacrifice yet.
“It’s going to be okay, Kiri,” Bakugo whispered. He’s not usually one for words of comfort, so hearing him say that brought a wave of affection crashing over me. He’s so manly.
I looked at him, my hair falling in my eyes. I nodded.
“Okay,” I replied, looking up to where the head of our truck was getting up to brief us more.
“When we got the call from Shoto to assist, the fire was just in the dorms, but barely contained. At this point, our analysts estimate that the fire has spread to the forest beyond. By the time we get there, it will likely be at the base of the main building. The first year students are all at USJ for training, and the second years have been evacuated. The third years, however, are permitted to assist in containing the fire on the condition that they evacuate if villains prove to be involved or if they get injured. We don’t think that there are any villains at the site, but we can never be too cautious. In the case that villains are involved, Ground Zero, Red Riot, you’ll be helping Deku in detaining them while the rest of us work with the fire. Understood?” Everyone nodded.
Bakugo looked slightly excited to be possibly dealing with villains. Though he feels he must work with the fire fighting heroes, I know that he misses capturing villains. He does his best to hide it, but I know him too well. I can’t pretend I wouldn’t rather be fighting villains, either.
Todoroki’s POV (Present)
Where are they?
I look over at Izuku, directing heroes from the control tent about 100 meters. He’s looking down at something, muttering into his earpiece, a look of concern twisting his features. He looks up and meets my gaze.
He shakes his head, answering my unspoken question.
I don’t know.
My ice barriers are barely containing the fire, it’s taking up too much energy to keep them from melting. This fire seems more powerful than the ones our agency typically fights.
Sweat pours into my eyes, I can’t spare any movements to wipe it away.
There might be villains behind this.
Recently, the L.O.V. has been active again. I know Touya’s flames are blue, so this can’t be them.
Right?
Unless…
Bakugo’s POV (Present)
My knee bounces up and down uncontrollably. I can’t stop it, which is stupid. Amazing heroes have to be in control. Only extras get scared.
I’m not in control of this situation.
I’m not saying I’m scared of the fire because it’s burning the place I loved most (shut UP, I don’t have feelings, I don’t get mushy!), but I’m angry because it’s making Sh!tty-hair upset. He’s trying to hide it, but I can tell. He clenches his jaw and furrows his brow, but most people do that. The tips of fingers harden, almost imperceptibly.
It’s too much.
I get up, startling Kiri a little. He looks disappointed. I walk to the driver and ask them why it’s taking so long.
“We received a message from HCS that we should take a detour to avoid some of the ice debris, but it’s taking a while. They assured us that it would take a longer time to go the typical route,” they said, not taking their eyes off the road.
That doesn’t sound right. IcyHot is usually pretty careful about where his ice goes.
“When did we get this transmission?”
“Um, maybe 4 minutes ago? Return to your seat. You’re distracting me.”
“Who was it on the comm?”
“I don’t know, a random sidekick? It’s not important, go back to your seat.”
They’re really pissed now. But something is definitely not right. Deku always takes care of communications, the nerd.
I walk back to my seat.
“Something’s not right,” I whisper.
Kirishima’s POV
“What?” I asked, my voice wavering.
“Shhh!” Bakugo hissed. “They got a transmission to take a detour.”
“So?”
“So, they said it was to avoid ice debris. IcyHot doesn’t miss with his ice.”
I still didn’t understand.
“It’s a big fire, maybe he lost control.”
“The transmission wasn’t from Deku.”
I get it.
“Call Deku.”
