Work Text:
‘who’s there?’ Kevin was greeted by a droopy-eyed Jose as the door swung open. Jose’s blinked hard and a drowsy smile floated onto his face as he recognised the tan cowboy. ‘Ayuso. hi! come in.’
the officer stumbled slightly as he closed the door behind them, Kevin hesitantly pulling out the chair from the dresser and taking a seat. Jose grabbed a bottle and poured its contents into a new glass. ‘drink?’ he held it out to Kevin, who took it but only took a ginger sniff.
‘it’s Dovlin,’ Jose waved his hand dismissively as he took a swig from his own glass. ‘you’ll be fine.’ he sat on the edge of his bed, back slumping a little as he let out a sigh. ‘what brings ya here?’
‘saw you rummaging in the kitchen so i took a wild guess,’ Kevin raised an eyebrow, glass of dovlin still a good twenty centimetres away from his face.
Jose sighed and downed the last of the contents in his glass. ‘got me. been feeling down today.’
‘isn’t that every day for you-‘
‘it’s rude to make assumptions aloud, Ayuso.’
‘you’re drunk, no consequences.’
‘i’m just tipsy,’ the officer protested as he reeled towards the dresser, hand outstretched towards the half-full bottle.
‘not so quick.’ Kevin swiped the bottle off the desk.
‘give it here,’ Jose whined, staggering towards Kevin. the cowboy scooted his chair backwards, gripping the bottleneck tightly.
‘if you drink any more tonight i’m telling Demi to hide her whole stash.’
‘your eyes are pretty.’
Jose made a grab for the bottle.
‘try harder, Baden. i’m not drunk out of my wits.’
Jose frowned, unable to move forward as Kevin’s outstretched leg barricaded himself from the officer.
‘give it,’ Jose paused to drunkenly contemplate, ‘or you drink it.’
Kevin sighed. what a handful.
‘go to sleep.’
‘okay. give me that.’
‘no.’
‘then drink it.’
‘no.’
‘it’s goooood!’
‘i have three matches tomorrow. how’s a hangover gonna help me?’
‘i have,’ Jose counted with his fingers, ‘two.’
‘you have experience working drunk.’
‘it’s sad to drink alooonne,’ Jose crooned, taking a step forward but tripping over Kevin’s leg. clumsily, the officer supported himself with a shaky hand on the dresser, which did not stop him from falling onto Kevin’s lap by the slightest.
Kevin’s face, albeit tan, showed traces of flushing as he did absolutely nothing, hands occupied with alcohol containers. the palm holding the glass of dovlin started to shake, spilling a bit of amber liquid.
‘feels nice,’ Jose wrapped his arms around Kevin’s neck, knocking his hat off as he snuggled even closer. Kevin’s mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. never in his life would he expect the officer to act like this.
a hand was placed over his own in a poorly-disguised attempt to retrieve the bottle of dovlin. Kevin scoffed to himself. sneaky bastard.
‘stop trying.’ Kevin twisted his arm around, dovlin sloshing in the bottle as he dangled it under the seat. Jose let out a sigh, cheek still pressed to Kevin’s nape.
‘come onnnn,’ Jose drawled, shifting his weight as he stretched his back, hands still around Kevin’s neck. he leaned backwards then forward again, looking Kevin in the eyes. he smelled sweet. and intoxicating. Kevin’s face felt hot. the friction from Jose shifting his weight was a bit too provocative. he internally punched himself as he felt heat
‘Jose…’
Jose traced his finger on Kevin’s lower lip ever so slowly, the brass cool on his lips. never in his life did he imagine a scenario like this. the officer felt distant to everyone; no matter how distinctly polite he was to everyone, there was always this vague melancholic taste in everything he did. like a barricade. it left a bitter aftertaste in most people’s mouths. Kevin had tried to get closer than acquaintances, but never really succeeded, except for that time when he was dead drunk and failed a rescue. he carried him for half a match, the officer clinging onto him for dear life. it felt intimate. alcohol was Jose’s getaway. alcohol made him feel better, be more open.
but this was wrong.
‘Jose.’
‘mmm?’ Jose perked up.
‘you should go to sleep.’
‘haven’t drank my fill.’
‘you’ve had enough.’ Kevin tried to get up from the chair, but Jose refused to budge.
‘drink with me, Kev.’ Jose eyes, though slightly unfocused, were mesmerising. his face was flushed, the moonlight from the window illuminating his gaunt silhouette. ‘just this once.’
how could he refuse?
Kevin slowly lifted the glass to his mouth, taking a sip of the rich liquid. then another. and another and another and another.
Kevin wiped his mouth with his sleeve, head already feeling dizzy from the sudden intake. ‘happy?’
‘you’re quite the lightweight, Ayuso.’ Jose chuckled, hand outstretched for the bottle. Kevin brought the bottle from behind, taking a long swig before handing the almost-empty bottle to Jose. fuck it. he was positive Jose would pass out if he drank anything more than two sips.
the world was spinning, Kevin struggled to get a grip, head slumping onto Jose’s shoulder as the room bent and twisted in front of his very eyes.
‘you smell nice,’ Kevin’s voice was muffled in Jose’s shirt.
‘you’re quite the charmer.’ Jose’s hands found their way to Kevin’s back, drawing small circles on the fabric.
‘i could do better,’ Kevin remarked, arms encircling Jose’s waist. ‘if you let me.’
Jose laughed, husky voice unusually joyous. ‘i would, Ayuso. but we walk opposite paths.’
‘don’t care,’ Kevin grunted. ‘you’re worth the whole damn tribe.’ he grabbed Jose’s thighs and stood upright, wobbling dangerously as he ventured over to the bed.
Jose was dropped unceremoniously, Kevin plopping himself next to the officer a moment later. Jose’s eyes were droopy; he reached a hand out to cup Kevin’s face as he mustered a drowsy smile. ‘you’re something else,’ he murmured. wrapping his arms around the cowboy, he buried his face in the crook of his neck, leaving a soft peck on the heated skin.
‘night,’ the officer whispered as he nodded off.
‘night.’
