Work Text:

Everything seemed back to normal, and study camp had come to an end. Nene sighed, there went her dreams of being asked out during it. All because she had gotten involved with supernaturals once more.

Although, Nene gnawed on her lower lip, if she were to be honest with herself, she didn’t want just anyone to ask her out—she wanted a someone—She slapped her cheeks, what was she thinking?

And it’s not like she had much time left anyway. Her body felt heavy as she grabbed her bag, ready to trudge out of the school—but somehow she wound up right in front of the girl’s bathroom.

She pushed it open, and dropped her bag with a light thud as a light breeze rippled through her hair and clothes. Hanako was gazing out the open window, his body transparent, and the orange rays of the setting sun shined through him. Her heart stammered. Not human, she reminded herself.

And yet—

“Hanako-kun,” said Nene, her voice breathless, stirring the silence.

Hanako whirled around fast. “Yashiro?” He blinked. “You’re still here? I thought you were leaving?”

“I was, but…” She stopped right in from of him, his body now solid. She tried to speak, but her words were caught like a lump in her throat, and despite the breeze, she found it very hard to catch her breath.

And the way Hanako stared at Nene unnerved her. His expression was unreadable, and yet patient as he waited to hear whatever it was she trying to say—which was what, exactly? She found herself fretting and her stomach twisting—

“Study camp is over,” she managed to blurt out, fiddling with the hem of her skirt. Her heart clenched, and she stared down at her feet. Study camp was over…she’d die in less than a year.

“And I…”

Words failed her completely and utterly.

“And you…?”

Nene peeked up at him through her lashes, and her gaze landed on his lips. Her cheeks warmed as she tried to speak again—“And I—“

Her fingers curled even tighter to the point where her knuckles went white—as though this would ground her for what she was about to do.

She closed her eyes, and she leaned forward, and kissed him. She felt him stiffen, and her heart skipped. His lips were so soft, and so airy—like a caress of wind. And even though he held no heat, Nene felt her whole body burn—burn with the urge to kiss him harder, to run her hands through his hair—

She pulled away, and Hanako jerked back a step, his hand grabbed the ledge of the windowsill. “Ya-Yashiro?” His amber eyes stared wide at her, questioning everything.

“A gentle kiss,” she murmured over the noise of her incessant heartbeat pounding in her ears, “to end study camp.”

“Eh?!” Hanako’s face went bright red, and Nene turned away, grabbed her bag, and left. She leaned against the door, unable to still her pulsing heart as she touched her lips.

A gentle kiss, indeed.
