voicemail.

Summary:

“A million times would never be enough.”

In which Sara Chidouin grieves over the loss of her best friend.

Notes:

"Mister Policeman, meow...how's big sis Sara, woof?"

Keiji's gaze flickered towards Gin, tilting his head down at the boy before offering a gentle smile. He can’t bear to meet such innocent concern with the true grimness of the situation.

So he lies through his teeth.

"...she'll be okay, Gin."

play.

"Hey, Sara! I saw a cat today. It was orange— reminded me of you!

You kinda remind me of a cat in a few ways, haha! You're real calm and collected, but you can be super feisty when ya wanna! And not to mention that you're , like, super graceful! Cats are graceful, right?

...well, not always graceful. There's those videos of funny cat fails on YouTube- you've seen 'em, right? You can be like that, sometimes, too!

Well, anyways, if you're a cat, I guess that makes me a dog, huh? Only fittin' with this little keychain you got me, y'know! I super appreciate it, by the way!

Hey, speaking of which, y'know how I was late the other day? Well, guess what- I was looking for the keychain! I misplaced it and left it in my jacket. Took nearly an hour 'nd a half to find it, haha... if you were on the phone right now, I know just what you’d say— ‘Be more responsible with your possessions, Joe!’ Right? Haha, I know you too well!

...But it's super important to me, seriously. Reminds me that you're always with me, no matter where I go!

Anyways, just wanted to call ya and ask how you were doing! Sorry for leavin' such a lengthy voicemail, ahaha!

Call me back later, okay ? Hope you had a good day, Sara!

Love ya!"

...

The silence in the room is thick after the gentle click of the message ending. Nothing could be heard but ragged breathing, lungs burning from continuous gasps over the past two hours.

No words leave Sara’s lips. No hands reach to send a text message back, and no efforts are made to answer the rapping against the door of her hospital room. It’s locked— she had kept it locked all the time since she had been here. There’s one person who she’d open it to— one person who she truly wishes to see— and she knows painfully well that he’s never coming to see her.

Faintly, she hears her name. She hears a voice— a familiar one— say they left something outside her door. Food? She barely registers the voice as Keiji, but her head is pounding so hard, she can’t understand anything he’s saying.

She takes a deep breath, swallowing thickly. A million times would never be enough.

And her thumb grazes over her phone screen again.

"Hey, Sara! I saw a cat today. It was orange. Reminded me of you!"

A voice with no body bounces off the walls of her hospital room.

Notes:

“Sara...”

It was but a gentle call. She doesn’t react.

...of course. How could she? He’s come to terms with the circumstances.

He cups her tear stained cheeks, examining her delicate features. The glow of the moon reflects off of Sara’s porcelain skin, giving her a ghostlike aura. He’s tempted to laugh at the irony, but he knows there’s nothing funny about the situation.

“...I’m sorry, Sara. Please don’t cry for me.”

A presence with no form calls out to deaf ears.
