Chapter Text
Midoriya Inko woke up to the smell of fire, so to say she panicked would be an understatement. She ran out of her room, looking for the source of the fire and her heart stopped when the fire seemed to originate in Izuku’s room.
“Izuku!” She cried, swinging her son’s door open.
In her son’s room, Izuku was sitting in his bed with his eyes wide. His bed was burnt, and his surroundings were charred; however, Izuku was safe. In fact, the dull red fire that was burning the room seemed to come from Izuku.
“Mommy! I think I finally got my Quirk!” Izuku squealed and the fire seemed to intensity, Inko had to shield herself from the heat. “Oh it’s so cool! I’m not hurt at all! I can’t wait to tell Kacchan!”
As Izuku seem to get more and more excited, the fire coming from his got hotter and hotter. The colour of his fire went from a dull red to a bright cherry red. The fire was spreading, which was alarming, Inko had to do something without scaring her son.
“Sweetie, I know you’re excited, but I need you to calm down.” Inko said, keeping her voice leveled. “I think your fire got hotter when you’re excited, I don’t know if that’s your Quirk, but it could be dangerous if we don’t stop your fire.”
Izuku stopped his rambling, noticing how much farther his fire has spread. It was threateningly close to his hero posters and All Might figurines. His eyes widened in fear, his fire grew hotter, but it did seem to recede, almost forming a protective blanket around the five-year-old.
“I don’t know how! Mommy, I’m scared.” He whimpered. “I want it to stop!”
And at that cry, the flame dissipated, leaving Inko dumbfounded. Was her son’s Quirk verbal? No, he didn’t ask the fire to get hotter. She shook her head, calming her son down has priority over figuring out his Quirk.
“Shh it’s alright, sweetie. You got the fire to stop, that’s good.” Inko hushed. “We’re going to go get your Quirk registered, let’s get you dressed okay? We can talk Quirks on our way. In fact, we can talk about yours!”
Izuku looked at her with teary eyes, a small fire starting on his shoulder when he blinked tears away in favour of the excitement of guessing his Quirk. “Y-Yeah!”
Their journey to the Quirk Registration was plagued with Izuku smoking at best and bursting into flame at worst at the slightest change in mood. It was stressful, so they decided to just walk the rest of the way instead of taking public transport. Sadly, his shirt was singed on the way. They would need to buy fire-proof clothes if this keeps on going.
Izuku found his Quirk test weird, they put him in a room in front of a screen. He looked around curiously before flinching at the sudden explosions that played on the screen. The sound scared him and soon fire burst from his skin, it formed a protective blanket around him. When he realized that it was just a recording, the flames weakened and then fizzled out. The next clip that played was a funny one and the fire that formed from his laughter danced on his skin and even jumped off, making firework-like fire displays. And the final clip was of a scary monster attacking, it scared Izuku enough that he tried to shield himself. The fire blasted out of his arms and it burned the screen to get rid of the video.
The doctor and his mother entered the room but kept a safe distance away from Izuku.
“It seems that the fire is from your father’s side while the emotional link is a mutation of your mother’s mental Quirk. We believe that your flames are intimately linked to your emotions. The more intense it is, the hotter your flames will burn.” The doctor explained.
Upon hearing the explanation, Izuku set himself aflame again in excitement. “That’s so cool! I never heard of a physical Quirk and mental Quirk mutating together like that before! Has there ever been other cases? I thought I would get pyrokinesis at best if we were fusing my dad and mommy’s Quirk!”
The two shielded themselves from the sudden heat, the doctor laughed. “Yes, it is quite a unique Quirk.”
“How would you suggest we control his Quirk?” Inko asked. “We can’t always have him bursting into flames.”
“Unfortunately, it’s his emotions that are the trigger for his Quirk activation. He is a child; it would be cruel to force him to live a stoic lifestyle. I can’t think of another solution other than Quirk suppressors.”
Inko went pale at the thought. “Q-Quirk suppressors? You mean my baby has to take drugs for the rest of his life?”
“No, of course not.” The doctor sighed, bringing out a silver bracelet. “I suggest wearing suppressors, so that in the off-chance that he is in danger, he still has means of self-defence.”
“Mommy! Can we visit Kacchan? I want to show him my Quirk!” Izuku grinned proudly, his fire rising in temperature. “We can be the greatest heroes together!”
Inko smiled at his excitement, taking the Quirk suppressing bracelet. “You both will definitely be the greatest heroes. But first, I need you to wear this bracelet.”
“Why?” Izuku frowned, his excitement turning into confusion. “Is it going to help me control my Quirk?”
“That’s exactly right!” The doctor confirmed. “Your Quirk is very hard to control because it is directly connected to your feelings. We don’t want you risking Quirk Exhaustion by being on fire all the time.”
Izuku’s fire fizzled out as he listened to the doctor. He looked down at his hands. He didn’t want to accidentally burn anything or anyone. If the only way to prevent that is by wearing a bracelet, then…
He stuck his arm out, waiting for his mom to slip on his bracelet.
“Mommy…” Izuku whined, twirling the bracelet. “I feel funny.”
Inko frowned, looking at the doctor for an explanation. “Do you feel bad?”
“No… I feel…” Izuku frowned. “Numb? Like something is missing? Is it because this bracelet makes my Quirk go away?”
“I suppose that’s how it can feel.” The doctor hummed. “Well! Now that that’s done, how would you like to register your Quirk?”
“I think…
… Empathetic Flames.”
