Hanako leaned in, the rim of his hat tickled Nene’s forehead. His amber eyes flickered with uncertainty.
Nene’s heart skipped, and stomach churned. This was it—her first kiss! And it was with Hanako-kun! Somewhere deep down in her mind, she recalled that she is probably his first kiss as well.
But that didn’t reassure her at all. What if they messed it up? Bumped foreheads, smacked teeth? Wait—teeth? Why would there be teeth involved? Nene’s mind whirled—they haven’t even kissed yet and she’s already messing it up in her head. She buried her face in her hands and groaned.
“Uh, Yashiro?” Hanako poked her cheek. “What are you doing?”
“N-nothing!” she squeaked, jolting backwards. Her back smacked against the bathroom sink—and she winced from the sudden throbbing pain.
Scratch that, she didn’t need to bump foreheads to ruin the kiss, she just needed to be herself.
She mumbled, fidgeting with her fingers, “I’m ruining our first kiss.”
His amber eyes went wide. “Our first what—”
Do now, think later, Nene told herself. And she seized him by the shoulders and closed her eyes and kissed him. She felt him stiffen, but he didn’t pull back. His lips were so soft and so plush, and the kiss while it was chaste and light as air, it managed to send waves of tingles and shivers down her spine
She pulled back and shyly looked up at him through her lashes and gasped—his face blazed red and Nene felt herself burn up.
“Y-you weren’t going to kiss me,” she said, slowly processing his look of utter shock. “Were you?”
“I was going to ask you if you wanted to play cards with me and Mokke...”
“Oh,” was all she could say. And they stood in silence for a moment before Nene suddenly turned sharply—ready to bolt out of there and away from the humiliation—
“Wait!” Hanako grabbed her wrist. “Yashiro!”
She turned to face him the best way she could as the mortification seeped in.
He barely could maintain eye contact as he fumbled over his words. “It wasn’t—I mean I wanted to—”
Nene’s bottom lip trembled—and Hanako pulled her into a hug, clutching her tightly against his chest. She found it weird that even though he’s a ghost, she could hear his heart race. “I liked it,” he murmured. “The kiss.”
Nene’s stomach fluttered. “Me too,” she said, breathily.
And before either of them could do anything or say anything else—the door banged open.
“HANAKO! I NEED YOUR HELP!” Kou’s voice made them jump apart.
And while Nene didn’t know what was next to come for them, she felt a bubble of excitement and anxiousness for the next time they’re alone together.
