Summary:

MikaYuu Bingo Day 9: Canon Divergence

Or what would have happened if Mika and Yuu had been late to arrive at the airport in Nagoya.

Work Text:

Mika knew that humans were dangerous and Yuu shouldn’t be with them, lest they experiment on Yuu again and they got separated once more.

Mika wouldn’t be able to live with himself if that happened.

That’s why when he finally got Yuu back, he tried his best to convince him to run away with him, to some place far away from everything and where they could live the rest of their lives in peace. He hadn’t considered that he would have converted into a full-fledged vampire in the process, but Yuu had always been stubborn and, well… if Yuu was happy, healthy and alive, whatever happened to him didn’t matter much.

But apparently he had forgotten how stubborn Yuu could be, and what was once an endearing trait was now an obstacle, because Yuu wouldn’t shut up about going back to his family—it was so wrong how Yuu could call other people his family so easily, when Mika was the only family Yuu should have—and how he needed to be there for them.

(That was enough for Mika to resent those humans, because if his 12 year-old self had heard those words coming out from Yuu’s mouth, he was sure he would be over the moon. Those humans didn’t know how lucky and blessed they were, to receive Yuu’s affections so openly when he had been denied of his love for so long.)

And maybe Mika had also grown weak over the years, because somehow Yuu convinced him to go meet up with those humans of his, even though he was so tempted to just take Yuu in his arms and go the opposite direction. It showed how starved he was of Yuu, how a few carefully chosen words could make his resolution crumble to dust, how he would do anything to see Yuu smile.

So they looked for a car they could use and Mika drove them to the airport, hoping that maybe, maybe, he would be able to change Yuu’s mind on their way.

Humans were dangerous and they were better off being far away from them.

And then it happened.

They were still far away from the airport, but it was not difficult to notice that something was horribly wrong. The skies had turned to an unnatural red colour and there was a giant dark being in the distance, firing black beams and destroying everything at its path. At the same moment, endless Horsemen of the Apocalypse appeared out of nowhere, attacking them relentlessly, and while they were no enemies for Mika or Yuu, they was no end to them.

By the time they arrived at the airport, they could only witness what was being a slaughter: it didn’t matter if they were human or vampire, everyone within a certain radius was being slain without mercy.

And at the centre of all the bloodshed stood the man that Mika had fought in Shinjuku, killing all vampires and fellow human soldiers that came into his path, laughing maniacally all the time.

Yuu seemed to want to scream and rush to the scene—Mika remembered that Yuu had also rushed to protect that man in Shinjuku, so that meant that the man was someone Yuu cared for—, but Mika quickly stopped him and muffled his cries, lest they be discovered and captured or killed. Yuu struggled for a moment until he saw the man slaying someone with pink hair—if Mika remembered correctly, it was the human who had been carrying Yuu on his back a few hours ago—and injuring gravely another human with blonde hair, which made Yuu go slack in Mika’s arms.

Mika was aware that Yuu was crying, but he also knew Yuu well enough to know that in a few moments Yuu would risk everything to save the remaining humans, and Mika couldn’t have that. Not when he had just gotten Yuu back.

“Yuu-chan, let’s go,” he tried to plea, for if he didn’t say anything he was sure that Yuu would convince him to go to the battlefield. “If the humans capture you, they’ll experiment on you. I’m sure that that monster over there is a human that the JIDA experimented on.”

“But, Mika…”

“And once you become that,” Mika held Yuu tighter, if only to stop Yuu to tremble. “You won’t have a say on your own body. It would be like Shinjuku, but you will end up killing your friends and no one will be able to stop you.”

They saw some soldiers restraining a boy with brown hair and the girl with lavender hair while the man kept killing other soldiers, and Mika felt Yuu flinch before he stopped moving.

“Let’s retreat,” Mika tried again. “And once we become stronger, we can try rescuing them. But now’s not the time. Okay, Yuu-chan?”

Yuu nodded weakly and Mika didn’t need another confirmation to help Yuu to his feet and take him far away from the battle, from the pain and the screams.

This time, Mika was going to make sure that they got their happy ending in the horrible story they were forced to live in, no matter what.
