Work Text:

Jimin was always the one to express his feelings in solitary. He wasn’t that type of person to rant about their feelings and thoughts to people, not even his friends. Ever since he was a child, people around him tried to push this mindset that being alone was a “bad” thing, that he needed to have a large group of friends and be with people to socialize, but Jimin had always liked having his alone time. One night he finally changed his mind, making himself believe- no, know that being alone isn’t as bad as he thought.

He would normally just talk to himself to let his emotions out, some stuff that he wouldn’t dare tell another person, some stuff that he just wanted to get out of his chest. One night, he saw the moonlight shine into his bedroom from his almost covered window. He got up and walked over to the window sill, looking up at the moon. His mother would always tell him when he was younger that there was a man on the moon, who would protect everyone with his soft light that shined throughout the entire darkness of the night. He always admired the moon since he was a child.

He couldn’t explain it, but there was this calming aura, this... safe feeling around him every time he would indulge under the moonlight. After a few years, instead of just talking to himself in his own thoughts at night, he would stare at the moon, letting his feelings flow out of his words from his plump lips. He felt at ease whenever he talked to the moon, always having this feeling of ‘what if’ there was someone actually listening to him. What if the man on the moon was actually listening to how he felt. Most people would call him delusional for thinking such a thing, but he didn’t think about it. He knew that the man on the moon would never judge him, therefore, he wouldn’t feel guilty or nervous is thinking his feelings out.

Throughout his childhood, he would do the same thing every night. He would sit down on the window sill and look up at the moon, knowing it’s not going to ever leave him. He would cry every time the moon would not appear in the night (his mother ended up explaining to him what moon phases were). Now, he was a full-grown adult, living in his own apartment, and he doesn’t cry anymore, but can’t help but feel a little bummed that he can’t admire the moon the nights he suddenly disappears. He still does talk to the moon, sometimes he doesn’t. Sometimes he just thinks it all in his mind while looking up at the night sky.

Sometimes he cries to the moon when he’s had a bad day, or when he feels like he just needs to pour his emotions all at once. He has always been thankful for the moon. Even though it’s just a piece of his imagination, he would always whisper a soft “goodnight...” to the man on the moon before going to bed.

The man on the moon would always listen to Jimin. Namjoon had been hearing his thoughts and feelings for as long as he can remember. He grew fond of the boy.

He would chuckle at the things that he would always think they were a big deal when in fact, he wanted to tell him that they weren’t and it was okay.

He would ponder his decisions or when he said something that it was his opinion, he wanted to sit with him and talk about it for hours.

He would cry when the poor boy came to the window sill, his face stained with tears, and his nose shiny and red.

He wanted to hug the boy and wipe the tears away from his beautiful face.

He had watched the boy grow throughout the years. He had seen him learn new things, make some mistakes, fix those mistakes, and continue on with his life.

He always felt a pang of excitement every time it hit nightfall, wanting to see the boy again. But one night, he suddenly stopped coming. It worried him, not knowing how he was, where he was if he was okay. He wanted to do nothing more than protect him from all harm, yet all he could do is sit down and listen. One night, he finally managed to hear something. It sounded like a very faint cry, almost as if it was dissipating from his earshot.

“w-why me...?” the small boy stuttered through his sobs, walking around in his room. He had gotten to a reach to the window that was close enough for Namjoon to hear his cries.

It shattered his heart into a million pieces. He knew he couldn’t do this anymore.

“w-why does everything... happen... to m-me?” Jimin sobbed as he hugged himself in the bed, wanting to just forget everything. It had been a tough couple of weeks for the boy his emotions taking a huge toll on him. All he wanted to do was just sleep and forget. Soon, his sobs sent him into a deep slumber. His face was wet with tears, his heavy, clumped eyelashes rested heavily on the apples of his cheeks. He was exhausted, but he didn’t really bring himself up to believe it.

Namjoon felt like he was suffocating at the feeling of not knowing how, or where Jimin is. He saw that it was already later than midnight, so he walked down to a flat patch of moon rocks and sat down. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. He opened his eyes slowly, looking at his surrounding with a perplexed expression. The sky was all gloomy and dark, the air heavy. He got up slowly and held his head, groaning softly. He felt the sadness wash over him, feeling trapped. “No...” he muttered very softly, knowing that this was how the other was actually feeling.

He looked around frantically and found a lump on the floor, covered by a yellow blanket. He walked over to it, and before he could touch it, it slowly turned around to reveal a tear-stained face, sporting some red, bloodshot eyes that were the owner of the boy who always used to talk to him at night. Jimin didn’t even notice him, he just kept sniffling and looking down on the floor, fresh tears running down his puffy red cheeks.

Namjoon slowly lifted his chin, looking deeply into his eyes. Those gorgeous eyes that shine so beautifully under his light. “I missed you...” he managed to give him a small smile, his dimple showing. He leaned down and hugged the boy who had a shocked and surprised face. He held him close to his chest, sighing softly. “Everything’s going to be okay in the morning... I promise. please, don’t cry...” he ran his fingers gently through his blond, soft hair.

Soon, the sobs quieted down and the sky remained back to the warm sunshine, and the ground slowly into a flower field, the soft pink and yellow flowers around them. Jimin sniffled softly against his neck, pulling away slowly “thank you... for listening to me every night.” He felt like his heart knew who he was, making his body feel safe and warm. He let himself know, that he was not alone.

Namjoon smiled and cupped his cheeks, wiping his tears away gently with his thumbs “you don’t have to thank me...” he kissed his forehead delicately, making the blond boy’s heart flutter. “go to sleep now... you’re gonna have a better morning tomorrow,” Namjoon spoke softly, lying Jimin down on the flower field. he covered him with the yellow blanket “sleep...” he touched his forehead gently with his two fingers, making Jimin close his eyes.

Jimin fell asleep again, a content smile on his face and then, everything went black.

Jimin woke up, his headache and heartache gone. He couldn’t remember much of his dream, but he knew that something happened that made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. He spent the entire day in a happy mood, being productive, and doing some work, even cleaning his house a bit. For the rest of the afternoon, he laid down on his bed, reading one of his favorite books.

He was finishing his book already, so he went out to his other room and go grab another one. He walked down the hall and then, he heard a doorbell from the front door. He stopped his tracks and looked down at the staircase.

His steps were almost cautious as he walked down the stairs, confused as to why someone would be ringing his doorbell at this hour. The sun had already gone down, the stars shining through the entire night sky. He looked through the window from the side, but there was no one. He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion and opened the door. He looked around and didn’t see anything until he looked down. There was a brown box, right on the mat. He was so confused but picked up the box anyway. It was a bit heavy, but he managed. He kicked the door shut and placed the box on the table. He was about to open it, but then heard some shuffling inside it.

He backed away slowly and then gasped when he saw two little pointed ears poking out of the slightly open lid. Suddenly, a cute little calico grey kitten popped his head out, meowing at the sight of Jimin.

“Hello...” he spoke softly, smiling at the adorable kitten. He walked slowly towards it, letting the kitten sniff his hand. The small kitten nuzzled his hand and tried getting out of the box. Jimin picked up the small kitten, holding it with one hand since it was so small. He caught a glimpse of a little note inside the box. He picked it up, looking at the very neat handwriting:

‘𝘏𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳. 𝘏𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘥𝘢𝘺. 𝘏𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳. 𝘪 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦...
-♡’

Jimin smiled warmly at the note, looking down at the kitten who was all snuggled upon his chest. For once in so many years, he finally didn’t feel alone. He placed the card down on the table and walked back upstairs with his new kitten sleeping in his arms. He saw that the moonlight was shining through his window, making him smile at the memory of the dream that was now coming back to him. He walked over to the window sill, looking up at the moon. He mouthed a soft ‘thank you’ and then looked down at the kitten. He placed the sleepy kitten on the cushions on the window sill.

“I think I’m gonna name you... moonshi... you like that?” he smiled at the sleepy kitten, trying to stand with his tiny little legs. The kitten sat down and looked at him. He meowed adorably, looking at Jimin.

Jimin chuckled softly “I’ll take that as a yes...” he pet his soft fur gently “don’t worry. I’ll take good care of you... just like he did with me...”

He looked up at the moon, smiling as he knew, that the man on the moon was watching them. He could feel it in his heart.

Namjoon smiled when he saw Jimin and the small kitten on the window sill. He knew that he would enjoy his small gift, remembering how much Jimin was always so fond of cats.

He was happy seeing his beautiful Jimin smile again, seeing those moon crescent eyes in display with his shining smile. He would never leave Jimin alone. Not until the day that the moon goes down, and never comes back up again.
