mitsuba was done with it.
today was the day mitsuba would confess to kou, his best friend. the guy whose smile was like a glimpse of heaven.
thinking about him made mitsuba remember it again. he remembered just how he fell in love with kou.

“hey mitsuba are you coming or not?” kou asked. he stood at the beginning of a field of tall green grass. the sun was hung in the pale blue sky, clouds dancing around it.
“in there? no way. who knows what you could do to me!? once we get deep enough in that field you’ll find somewhere nice and quiet and push me down and do nasty things to me pervert! i know what you’re up to so don’t try me.” mitsuba rambled. he stuck his tongue at the end of his sentence just to tease him a little more.
kou stood there arms crossed. he’d always get these stupid unnecessary erotic comments from mitsuba but he was used to it. it never really bothered him because mitsuba was just like that.
“stupid.” kou yelled at him.
“stupid? i—“
mitsuba was cut off. kou took mitsuba’s free hand, the other holding his precious camera, and dragged him through the grassy field.
it was kind of stupid. scratch that, it was stupid. mitsuba couldn’t see much since he was being beaten by the tall grass. he shouldn’t have seen anything but he did. what he saw, it made him feel weird. he saw kou. he saw how his teal eyes were illuminated by the sun. he saw his little fangs as he laughed breathily. he could feel the warmth of kou’s hand and it was getting warmer each second. suddenly mitsuba could hear more than kou’s boyish laugh, the sound of the swishing of the tall grass, the birds singing a catchy melody, and the sound of their feet hitting the ground as they ran; he could hear his growing heart beat. it pounded through his ears as if it was an alarm set for the end of the world. what was going on exactly? why did he feel like this? well, maybe it was because mitsuba wasn’t very athletic. maybe it was because mitsuba hadn’t ran in a long time. or maybe—? his stomach churned. was it butterflies or was it because he felt sick? or was it both? he thought of something odd but as the sun caught his eye, he stopped and pushed that thought away.
and finally they reached the end of the field. it was a tiny clearing surrounded by a mysterious forest.
“we’re here mitsuba!“ kou announced. there was an awkward silence so kou tried to explain himself.
“i thought it was really pretty so i brought you here because uh- you like taking pictures and stuff”
he was still holding his hand. “oh! sorry hehe. i got distracted” and kou pulled it away. mitsuba‘s hand grew cold.
mitsuba looked to his right and there was a checkered picnic cloth laid on the grass and a tiny chestnut colored basket that sat cozily on top of it.
“oh! i made some food. also made flan! your favorite!” kou added smiling.
there was a tiny silence before mitsuba spoke.
“heh, you idiot, ants could have gotten into it” he scoffed. a smile crept up on his face. he loved it when kou remembered.
a sudden thought hit him; mitsuba felt really bad. he didn’t know kou prepared this for him. he thought kou wanted to show him a bug or something like how he always did, but this was not what he expected. it was like a date in a way and it made mitsuba blush.
they sat there and ate and talked about who knows what; the wonders of life, their grades, yokoo and satou, whatever. they could talk forever and that’s what made mitsuba really appreciate kou. he always listened to him and it made mitsuba feel welcomed for once.
the sun began to descend and the sky tinted a pinky tangerine color. mitsuba had taken a bunch of photos. he took photos of butterflies that sat on lilacs, the green grassy field they had ran through, the dreamy cotton candy like sky, the tall oak trees surrounding them, the birds that perched on branches; mitsuba had took enough to his liking.
“well the sun’s setting minamoto-kun. lets go back, your perverted mind will run crazy once it’s dark” mitsuba sighed standing up.
“wait!” kou ecstatically said, “take a picture of me!” he threw up a peace sign and mitsuba went along with it surprisingly. he brought his camera to his face and peered at the sun kissed boy through it. he was glad he could capture him like this. he was glad he could catch this moment forever.

they packed up and walked home together under a dark sky.
“well that was fun! we should do that again” kou said to him.
mitsuba nodded distractedly. he was lost in his world of thoughts.
“are you okay mitsuba?” kou asked him. so he noticed. he knew him too well.
“yeah” mitsuba quietly replied to him.
he looked up at the sky never noticing how bright it was and instinctively, he turned his head to kou. kou looked back and held his gaze to mitsuba. he smiled.
“ah” so mitsuba thought. he recognized this feeling. the feeling of your heart racing, the feeling of butterflies in your stomach, the feeling of love. he knew it and he couldn’t deny it anymore. he had to face it.
mitsuba softly returned the smile and turned to the ground as his eyes welled up. he didn’t want to accept it. his bestfriend of all people? mitsuba was scared, but he felt so warm. he hated this feeling.
a tear ran down his face and hit the cold hard concrete. he let out a tiny sob. kou noticed and took mitsuba’s soft hand. their fingers intertwined. they were holding hands.
“idiot” mitsuba whispered in between his quiet sobs.
under that starry mysterious night sky, they walked down a cold quiet dimly lit road sharing nothing but each other’s warmth.
