Chapter 1
Bam didn’t know why he’d done it.
He did know that Endorsi had something of a crush on him. He didn’t feel quite the same but she was a friend and he really did like and appreciate her. Which was why even though he’d made sure he was never leading her on, he couldn’t find it in himself to outright, bluntly, refuse her.
And then prom had to come along.
Bam really should have seen this coming. He had to hand it to Endorsi. She was stubborn. Every day since it had been announced, she’d sauntered over and heavily implied how she was still date-less (even though he’d seen her reject the dozens of guys that tried to invite her with grand gestures like roses and chocolates).
The prom was next week. He’d grown used to her antics by now. But it had simply been such a tiring day. He’d stayed up late last night finishing an essay for Hansung. And when Endorsi followed him out of math class and prompted him once again, he just snapped.
“I have a date already,” he sputtered.
Endorsi blinked once. Twice. She narrowed her colorfully made up eyes. “What. Who is it.”
The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them. “Khun.”
Ohh this is not good.
Her eyes widened. “Our Khun? Khun Aguero Agnis?” she said oddly.
“Yeah,” he affirmed with confidence he did not have. And like the dead man he now was, he added, “We had been thinking about it for a while now. Sorry for not telling you earlier.”
She glared at him, suspicious, before she sighed and said “Whatever. Good for you, I guess.” She pulled out her phone and quickly sent off a text before walking away, heels clacking loudly against the polished hallway floor.
Which was good because he desperately needed to find Khun before her or anyone else did.
God, he’s so gonna kill me.
In hindsight, his best friend’s name had come exceedingly easy when asked for a date. And yeah, if he was absolutely obligated to pick someone to go to prom with, why not Khun? I’d be fun, it got Endorsi off his back, and they could prank the rest of their friends. At least for the last part, he knew the other would be absolutely down for.
Bam smiled a little as he raced down hallways and peeked into classrooms for a speck of blue. Maybe this was actually brilliant.
Bam found him sitting next to the windows in the history classroom, sunlight gracefully adorning his figure. Class was starting in a few minutes and Bam had chemistry at the other end of the school, but he couldn’t ask this big a favor of him by text.
“Khun,” he said as he stumbled in, disheveled and breathless.
“Bam,” he greeted curiously. “What are you doing here?”
He gulped and scratched at his head. “So, funny thing is, I did something and I kind of need a favor of you.”
Khun smiled. “Of course,” he said immediately. He was used to helping Bam with whatever ridiculous thing he ended caught up in. “What is it?”
“I—“
“YOU GUYS!” He was cut off by Shibisu rushing into the room and catching them both in a hasty hug. “Oh man. I just knew this day would come. Thanks for winning me a hundred bucks, by the way. You’re the best.”
Bam’s blood ran cold.
Khun wrestled himself out of the hug with an annoyed huff. “You’re so loud. What are you talking about?”
“You two!” he exclaimed, gesturing wildly between them. “I knew you two would get together before we graduated.” Bam watched Khun, waiting for the stark denial but only caught the slightest of hints that he was surprised before his face was schooled into the calm and composed manner it always was. “But anyway,” Shibisu continued, “I’m really happy for you.” He wiped a single tear from his eye before settling in his seat ahead of Khun. “They really grow so fast.”
Khun looked like he wanted to smack him.
Bam laughed nervously. “So, Khun…”
He sighed, running a hand through his pale blue hair. “I get the gist of it,” he whispered. “Get to class, Bam. Tell me the whole story at lunch.”
“Rooftop?” The other nodded and Bam shot him one last apologetic glance before racing to his class.
Khun was already at the roof when Bam got there. It was sort of “their” place. It was supposed to be off-limits to students but Khun had picked the lock ages ago and Bam had found out about it when he noticed him sneaking off on his own a lot during their sophomore year. The rest of their friend group had figured it out eventually too but they much preferred eating on actual tables.
It was a nice day out, warm with a slight breeze. They sat near on the ground near the chain-linked edge, looking down at the sport fields.
“Explain,” he said curtly, taking a small chunk off his sandwich and popping it into his mouth.
Bam did so with not little embarrassment. From all of Endorsi’s nagging to his lack of sleep and therefore delayed critical thinking, arriving at the awkward conclusion that he’d announced him as his date to the prom.
“You don’t have to if you don’t want to,” he started, because he already had an inkling of what Khun’s answer was going to be. His best friend was always bailing him out of trouble and Bam felt like he had yet to do anything to deserve it. “But I’d really appreciate it.”
“Alright, fine. I’ll do it. But I believe you might have to rethink how the rest of our friends saw it.”
“What do you mean?”
“Check your phone.” Bam reached for his phone and saw their group chat message count over a hundred. He skimmed the texts with a slight frown. He was confused. Why was their thing being so blown out of proportions? “You remember what Isu said? I think they had a bet going on about… us.” Khun suddenly found the field below them oh so interesting to stare at. “They think we’re dating.”
“Oh. Is that much different from the prom thing though?”
Khun opened his mouth to speak and then thought better of it. “Never mind. So, you want us to fake date until after the prom.”
He nodded. “Yeah, would that be okay with you?”
Khun leaned back on the ground, looking up at the sky above them. “Sure. It’ll be fun. We’ll have the rest of them fooled.”
“Thank you! You’re the best,” he said, and added as an afterthought, “babe.” He thought it would be funny but for some reason, he found himself heating up a bit after saying it.
He heard Khun sputter as he turned, facing away from him. “Obviously.”
