Work Text:

Sanemi was frustrated, angry. His fists clenching as if he can crush a rock with them. His phone was lying on his bed, showing messages that he had with his best friend, Masachika. The last few showing concern towards Sanemi as the last one was a picture. A picture of his current boyfriend, Tomioka Giyuu kissing with another peach haired guy. If Sanemi remembered correctly, Giyuu said that he was his childhood friend, Urokodaki Sabito.

Although Masachika didn’t mean any harm, he still managed to light the fuse of Sanemi’s anger.

I thought he said that there’s nothing between them.

He told me that Urokodaki was only a childhood friend.

Did he fucking lie to me?

Is he cheating behind my back all this time?

Questions started flowing into Sanemi’s head, getting even more enraged with each one. He then rushed back to school as he knows Giyuu has Kendo Club today. He wanted to ask him face to face.

Or more accurately, he wanted to yell at his face.

Giyuu was just done changing, he was wearing his shoes while talking to Sabito when he saw Sanemi rushing towards him. The vein on Sanemi’s head was very clear, and everyone around him can feel the anger radiating from him. Everyone except Giyuu.

Sanemi stood in front of Giyuu who just stood up, with Sanemi slightly towering over the shorter student.

“Shinazugawa, is there anything wrong?” Giyuu said with his usual monotone voice, looking at Sanemi with his usual dead-fish like eyes, which made Sanemi’s blood pressure went through the roof.

“Is there anything wrong?! Is there anything wrong?!” Sanemi yelled at Giyuu’s face, the veins on his face more visible, “You still have the fucking guts to ask me that, you cheater?!”

This made the two of them receive a few stares from people in the hallways and in the changing room. Sabito stepped in between them.

“Whoa, settle down there, you can’t just yell at Giyuu like that,” seeing the third person in their relationship defending his boyfriend made Sanemi’s blood boil even more. He tried very hard to resist the urge to just punch this peached hair motherfucker in the face.

“This is none of your fucking business, rabbit boy!” Sanemi roared, “actually it is.” He then took out his phone and showed the picture that Masachika sent. Giyuu’s face instantly went pale, his expression changed, looking horrified as to what he just saw.

“No, wait, Shinazugawa, I can explain-” Giyuu’s words were cut short by a punch in the face. Giyuu fell onto the floor, his face swollen due to the punch. He looked up at Sanemi, who already had tears falling down his face.

“Giyuu!” Sabito rushed to Giyuu’s side, then turned to Sanemi, “What the fuck is your problem?!”

He even calls him by his given name, so casually like that.

So, this is how it is, huh?

Fine then.

“I don’t want to hear your shitty excuses!” Sanemi howled, with a hint of despair in his voice, “Go spend your time with that son of a bitch if you like him so much! I never want to see you again!”

Sanemi then turned and ran away. Giyuu wanted to stop him but stumbled upon his steps, he kept reaching his hand out. But Sanemi didn’t even turn back, leaving a sad Giyuu behind.

After he got out of the school, Sanemi took out his phone and called Masachika, telling him what happened. Masachika tried to calm him down and told him to go to a café nearby.

Sanemi arrived at the café. Masachika waved at him to get his attention. He sat down and ordered a matcha latte before telling Masachika all about it.

“And then he tried to explain like it wasn’t obvious enough!” Sanemi told Masachika every detail about the situation. The latter listened carefully to everything he said. Masachika was his best friend, both of them are like brothers, and he will always be Sanemi’s go-to-guy if he needed to talk his heart out besides Giyuu.

“Alright, I get that you’re mad, but have you listened to his explanation?” Masachika asked.

“…No” Sanemi replied, “but was the truth not fucking obvious enough? You’re the one who sent that picture.”

“I sent you that picture because I was concerned,” Masachika pushed the cup of matcha latte towards Sanemi, “I don’t know who took it, but it was being sent around like crazy. Though something tells me that things might not be what it seems.”

Sanemi rolled his eyes and snorted at Masachika’s comment while sipping his matcha latte.

“I’m not taking any sides here, but I think you should listen to his explanation,” Masachika said with a concerned look on his face, “I see you as my brother and I don’t want anything bad happening to you. Don’t make any rash decisions.”

“…Fine,” Sanemi reluctantly replied. Masachika’s words are mostly trustworthy, and he wanted nothing but the best for his friends, especially Sanemi. Sanemi was glad that he had a friend like Masachika.

Both of them then had dinner in the café and went to the arcade together to get Sanemi’s mind off of everything that happened. They spent their time there until the sky turned dark. The whole time Sanemi ignored his buzzing phone, overfilled with notifications.

Sanemi got home a little late into the night, his family already sleeping. Except for Genya whom he shares a room with. Genya was still working on his homework, as he came back home late because of Kyudo Club.

“Aniki, where did you go?” Genya asked when he heard the door open, “I’ve texted you a few times but you didn’t reply.”

“None of your fucking business,” Sanemi was usually foul mouthed, even towards his friends and family, except for his mom and his remaining younger siblings, all who he cares deeply.

“Anyway, think you can help me with math? I’ve been stuck on this algebra question for a while now.”

“Algebra? Seriously?” Sanemi wasn’t in the mood, “Look, I don’t really feel like teaching an idiot who doesn’t even understand one of the simplest parts in math right now. I’m gonna hit the bunk.”

“Did something happen?” Genya asked worryingly. He knew his brother; he would not refuse to teach him math unless something serious happened to him.

“No. Now shut the fuck up and go to bed.” Sanemi then made his way to the bathroom, with Genya giving out a sigh behind him.

He locked himself in the bathroom and took out his cellphone, tons of notifications showed up. Mostly messages and missed calls from Giyuu and a few messages from Genya asking if he’s coming back for dinner. But Genya knew that if he didn’t reply it’s an automatic no.

Sanemi had loved Giyuu deeply, and it really felt like his heart was just stabbed with a knife when he saw that picture, stabbed and shattered to a million pieces. It felt like the fire in his life candle blown out just as he wasn’t looking. It’s like giving your most precious treasure to him, only for him to throw it into the sea right before your eyes. Sanemi took a deep breath as tears started to flow down his face, but he wiped them away roughly with his sleeve.

Just as he was about to hit the block option, he thought of the happy times Giyuu and him had together. The time when Giyuu accepted his confession behind the school, the time when they held hands together when no one was looking, the time when Giyuu surprised him by gifting him handmade Ohagi for his birthday, the time where he made Giyuu smile by braiding his long hair into a thick braid similar to his late sister’s. Tears started to pour down his face as the memories flowed into his mind. He then remembered Masachika’s words.

“Don’t make any rash decisions.”

Sanemi looked at his phone, and pressed the option.

For the next few days in school, Sanemi and Giyuu would avoid seeing each other. Even if they bumped into each other in the hallways, they would pretend to be strangers, like they never met. This made Sanemi’s heart clench, but he knows that if he confronts Giyuu now, it would be more than just a punch in Giyuu’s face. Though, the messages and the phone calls stopped after the day they fought.

He gave up, didn’t he?

Or does he just doesn’t care anymore?

But he seemed… unhinged… more than usual.

Maybe I should… do something?

After 2 weeks of avoiding and pretending to be strangers, Sanemi had completely cleared up his mind. He decided to check the massive number of messages Giyuu sent before. It was mostly of him wanting to explain and begging for Sanemi to listen and pick up his phone calls. The last few messages caught Sanemi’s eye.

Tomioka: Fine, I get it.

Tomioka: You are mad at me.

Tomioka: I’ll give you some time to cool off.

Tomioka: We’ll talk when you are ready.

Sanemi unmuted the notifications for Giyuu, and started typing away on his phone.

Shinazugawa: Tomorrow, after your club.

Shinazugawa: the usual place.

Shinazugawa: If you’re fucking late, I’m ditching.

Giyuu got these messages late at night when he was about to sleep. His eyes widened in shock and excitement, his heart beating so fast it was about to explode. Tears of joy started flooding his eyes and down to his chin. He hugged his phone to sleep that night.

Sanemi arrived early at the agreed destination. It was another café, a different one from the one he went to with Masachika. This was where him and Giyuu had their dates most of the time, since this café makes the best matcha lattes. Giyuu was the one who introduced him to this place, something he rarely does since he doesn’t go out often. He heard rumours that Giyuu tried every matcha latte from all the cafés nearby just to find the best one for Sanemi.

After a while, Giyuu showed up at the door of the café. He leaned over at the door, catching his breath. Sweat was dripping down his face and chin. He was still wearing his uniform, though it was a little bit wrinkled. The café was a distance away from their school, and Giyuu just wanted to see Sanemi as soon as possible.

Giyuu went inside and saw Sanemi at their usual corner. He walked over and took his seat opposite to Sanemi. Both of them stayed silent for a moment. Sanemi took this time to take a good look at the man in front of him. Giyuu’s eyes were swollen. Underneath them were dark rings. His whole complexion looked pale. Sanemi ordered some breadsticks, seeing the slightly hollow cheeks of his partner’s face.

“Shinazugawa, I-”

“10 minutes,” Sanemi said in a calm voice as Giyuu opened his mouth, “You got 10 minutes to convince me not to commit murder.”

“Ah, okay…” Giyuu took a deep breath and started explaining everything.

A few days before their fight, Giyuu was waiting behind their school building for Sabito, his childhood friend. He was waiting under a tree, wondering why Sabito told him to come here.

“Giyuu.” Sabito arrived and called out to Giyuu before slowly walking towards him.

“Sabito,” Giyuu turned around, “is there anything wrong?”

“Well, erm…” Sabito looked nervous, his eyes shifting left and right. Giyuu tilted his head a little, wondering why Sabito was blushing. Sabito took a deep breath, “Can you… close your eyes for a sec?”

Giyuu nodded and did what he was told.

Then it happened.

Sabito grabbed Giyuu’s hands and pinned him to the tree, their lips meet each other. Giyuu’s eyes immediately fluttered open, stunned by the sudden gesture, but immediately pushed Sabito away as soon as he regained his senses.

“Sabito, what the hell?!” Giyuu yelled while wiping his lips with his hand, “you know that I have a boyfriend!”

“I-I’m sorry, I-I-” Sabito stumbled upon his words, too anxious to get any intelligible words out of his mouth. He swallowed hard before starting to talk again, “I have feelings for you, ever since when we’re kids. And I just couldn’t contain them anymore.”

Giyuu’s eyes widened, shocked at the sudden confession.

“I had to get them out, one way or another. I just can’t hold back anymore,” Sabito wailed, his voice raspy, “it sounds unmanly, I know. But every time when I’m together with you I just have butterflies in my stomach. I cried when I knew you accepted Shinazugawa’s confession, I know that I don’t have a chance against him. But these feelings, they’re ripping me apart!”

“Sabito, I…” Giyuu was at a loss for words, he didn’t know what to do in this situation. The right words to say, the right gestures to give, he didn’t know. His poor social skills certainly aren’t helping him. He exhaled and walked up to Sabito, “we’ll talk when you get things sorted out.”

Giyuu then walked away, leaving Sabito alone.

“That’s all that happened that day,” Giyuu said before he sipped on his water, “we later talked, got things sorted out, and now we’re friends again, nothing else.”

“That fucking rabbit…”

“I’m sorry Shinazugawa, I should’ve told you earlier.”

“It’s my fault too,” Sanemi mumbled, his head lowered and his expression softened, “I’m sorry for punching you.”

“It doesn’t hurt anymore,” Giyuu pointed at his face where it used to be swollen because of Sanemi’s punch, now only reduced to a little brown bruise, “guess we both have some working out to do.”

Both of them then had their dinner in a restaurant nearby. Sanemi insisted that he would walk Giyuu back home. Before Giyuu went inside, he gave Sanemi a hug, to which Sanemi responded by pulling Giyuu for a kiss, their lips syncing in motion. Sanemi cupped Giyuu’s face with both of his hands, savouring every moment of this. After they pulled away, they said their goodbyes and Sanemi went back home as well.

“Aniki, you came back late again,” Genya said as Sanemi opened the door, “what happened this time?”

“Nothing. Now shut your damn mouth and do your work,” Sanemi huffed.

“My teacher gave me more algebra since I did everything wrong on the last homework, think you can help me this time?”

“…Why are you so fucking stupid?” Sanemi then walked towards Genya and started aggressively teaching him about how the quadratic formula works.

Genya smiled seeing his brother back to normal again.
