Work Text:
Iida was truly amazing.
It didn't matter what he was doing: hero work, keeping the citizens of the city safe from the villains or just being at home and helping you with whatever needs to be done - he puts his all into it. That was one of the many aspects you loved about him.
Though, if you had to pick a specific aspect that you truly adored, it would have to be how he always stood up for those who couldn't.
Surprisingly, that's how you both met.
You both went to U.A., but you always got harassment from a few students because of your weight. Being ridiculed for not having 'the ideal body of a hero' which was ridiculous to you, but back then you were still reluctant to stand up to those especially when you didn't know what their quirk was.
After a certain incident in the cafeteria one afternoon, Iida was right by your side. You never really talked to 1-A's class rep. before, so seeing him standing in front of you and standing up to the bully that was teasing you was such an amazing sight.
"You have no reason to taunt her!"
"Anyone has the capability to be a hero!"
"Just because she's bigger, doesn't mean she can't be a hero!"
"Have you seen her during training, she's remarkable!"
"(Y/N)-san is one of the most capable students here!"
Those words he shouted at the bullies and for the whole cafeteria to hear still resides with you today. Ever since that day in the cafeteria, you and Iida spent hours upon hours together studying, training and just hanging out and soon, during your guys' second year at U.A., you both started dating.
After graduation, you moved in together and started pro-hero work together at the same agency. It was great, being with your better half and helping the city.
You rarely had anyone point out your weight besides the few news stations and papers just trying to get a story out of it which was ridiculous. The citizens marveled at your quirk and how you and Iida worked together in perfect sync. You both worked together for 5 years until a certain mission left you in the hospital for a few weeks.
Many surgeries and physical therapy sessions, later, you managed to go back home with your boyfriend who of course was always by your side asking you if you needed anything or wanted anything, if you were in pain, etc. Of course it was sweet on his part, but after a while you just needed to have those moments to yourself and with him constantly by your side - that wasn't going to be a possibility.
You noticed that Iida was taking days off from his hero duties which was so unlike him and that was where you drew the line. Sitting him down that night, you honestly didn't know the conversation was going to go the way it did.
"(Y/N), what if something like that happens again," Iidas hand grasped yours tightly and brought it to his chest. "What if you get injured like you did, or worse - killed," Biting his lip, you could see tears well up in his eyes making your own start up.
He continued on before you could even say anything. "I don't know what I'd do without you (Y/N), I love you so much it hurts and just seeing you like that in the hospital, I vowed to always protect you and be by your side and I promise to keep that vow."
At this point, it was like a waterfall running down your chubby cheeks, you had never heard Iida speak with such passion for something else besides school.
Cupping his cheek, you gave him a chaste kiss. "Iida, I know you'll protect me and be by my side, but that doesn't mean you can neglect your hero duties," Iida pulled you into his lap and hid his face in the crook of your neck. You could feel wetness on your neck and smiled gently. "You have citizens that need your help and I know you know that...I know you're worried about me, but I'll be fine."
You felt Iida's tears stop as he started to place small kisses up the curve of your neck. You felt his hot breath on your damp skin as he began to talk once more.
"I'll always worry about you, just like back in school," You both shared a laugh as his arms tightened around your plush waist. "I know I might be overprotective and hover a lot, but (Y/N), I need you in my life."
"Marry me"
Your breath caught in your throat. Did he really just say that?
"What... Iida..."
Lifting his head from your neck, he gazed into your eyes. "(Y/N), I love you and I know I want to spend the rest of my life with you; I promise to always be with you through thick or thin... so, please, (Y/F/N) (Y/L/N), will you marry me?"
Without hesitation, you screamed out, "Yes! Yes Iida, I will!" Of course he didn't have a ring because it was so spontaneous; an aspect that wasn't really common with him, but when it came to you, he knew what he wanted and now, he had it.
Pulling you back onto his lap, his hands found your waist and his lips crashed onto yours. Your little talk turned into so much more than you could've imagined.
The sound of the door brought you back out of your thoughts as your eyes left the ring that decorated your left hand. Having been married for a year already, it's been so wild, but so full of love. You wouldn't trade it for anything else.
Glancing at the clock hanging on the wall, it was a little after 8 P.M. the time that your husband got off of work. He probably used his quirk to get back home in a few short minutes. He had a tendency to do that most of the time and it was always the same reason - wanting to get home to you.
"(Y/N), I'm home!" Iida's voice echoed through the house as a smile graced your lips. Walking into the living room where he was most likely taking some of his hero armor off, you answered, "Welcome home hon, how was work?"
With boots off, he strode up to you and pulled you close to him by your doughy waist. Iida was always a bit shy when it came to affection, especially showing it physically, but now, he relished it and if there was a chance he could hold you or touch you; he was going to take it.
"It was fine, just the usual routine," Pulling you closer to him, you were flushed against his chest as he placed a chaste kiss on your lips. "Midoriya stopped by the office today and we discussed a few things."
"What kind of 'things'? Your fingers started to play with the back of his hair, a small thing you started doing when you both first dated.
"Well," pulling you over to the couch, he sat down, bringing you to sit upon his lap, well, more like straddle his lap. His hands latched onto your waist once again, rubbing soft circles into your skin. "He was talking about the baby, keeping him and Uraraka up at night and just how much he enjoys being a father." Iida's tone changed a bit as he got toward the end making you furrow your brow.
You fidgeted in his lap a bit.
The talk of kids did pop up here and there, but you both never really sat down and talked about it seriously before. Biting your lip, you glanced at your husbands face, he had a small smile on it, but his eyes said something different.
Tilting his chin up, your eyes met as you spoke. "Iida, do you want kids?" His hands trailed up your soft sides, sliding over the small bumps adorning it, it was something he did often to calm his nerves.
"Of course I do (Y/N), especially with you," His hand cupped your chubby cheek, his thumb caressing your skin softly. "I just never knew how to approach you about it... I didn't know if you wanted any kids or if-." You cut him off with a hard kiss, your soft arms wrapping around his neck as his fell upon your thighs; squeezing them softly as the kiss deepened; tongues clashing against one another and hands explored each other's bodies as if it was the first time in forever you got to touch one another.
Once air became an issue, you pulled away, both of your breathing became ragged as you both greedily inhaled the fresh air. "Iida," Leaning your forehead against his, you pecked his lips lightly. "I want to have children with you."
Those words brought a huge smile onto the pro heroes face. Hugging you tight, he pulled both of you to lay on top of the couch as a fit of giggles escaped you.
"There's one problem." His hot breath tickled your ear gently.
"One problem?" You mumbled against the skin of his neck.
His hands started stroking your back softly. "We have this 'curse' you can say that runs in the family." Lifting your head, you cocked an eyebrow at him as he continued. "We've only ever had boys and the most we've had in the family were twins." You laugh filled the room at his words.
"That's the curse, huh? Well," Straddling his lap again, you ran his hands up his chest. "I say we give this little curse a run for its money." With that said, you leaned down to capture his lips in a heated kiss once more as the room filled with moans and groans through the night.
-------
Your eyes glared at the small stick laying upon the counter.
If this one came up positive, then it had to be true. Yup, you were taking a pregnancy test and your anxiety was through the roof right now as you waited the few measly minutes to get the answer, but it felt so much longer to you.
After that steamy night on the couch, Iida and you made love every chance you got which was quite a bit, sometimes multiple times a day. This continued on for a few weeks until you started getting sick in the mornings, always making you rush to the bathroom. Iida was always there by your side, pushing your hair to the side so vomit wouldn't get into it as he'd rub your back and say soothing words.
At first, you brushed the sickness off as eating something bad, or just a bug, but it kept happening and then missing your period was the big red flag to you. You didn't want to get Iida's hopes up, so here you are, waiting for the timer to go off to see if-.
Ring ring
Ring ring
Shit. Taking a deep breath, you reached for the plastic stick and saw the words:
Pregnant.
"(Y/N)?" Jumping at your husband's voice, you hid the test behind your back and turned to him. You didn't even hear the damn door open, how the hell was he able to sneak up on you like that?
You wanted to tell him in a cute way, like you saw online, but now, here he was, eyes examining you trying to find the answer to his question. "(Y/N), what's that behind your back?" Sighing in defeat, you looked up at him.
"I wanted to tell you in a different way, but I guess you caught me," Brining the test out from behind your back, you held it up to him. "I'm pregnant Iida... you're going to be a dad." With shaky hands, he reached out to grasp the test from you, eyes wide with shock; glancing from you to the test and back again as if he couldn't wrap his head around what you just said.
"R-really?" Nodding your head, you were caught off guard as he lifted you into his arms and twirled you around as if you weighted nothing to him.
"This is wonderful news (Y/N)!" Stopping the twirling, he still held you in his arms. "We're going to be parents - I can't believe it." With his face nuzzled into your soft, squishy stomach, it was the beginning of a beautiful journey.
----
Your hand rubbed your swelled up belly gently as you felt a light kick.
It's been four months since you told Iida that you were expecting and he's been so helpful and caring, more so than he usually is and it made you happy to see him so excited and always gushing over the baby that wasn't even born yet.
Glancing at the clock, it was near five o'clock, meaning you had three hours to go to the store, cook dinner and have it ready for him when he got home. The main point was to get out of the house honestly. Iida has been so overprotective toward you that he didn't really let you do anything. He did most of the house chores, cooking and errands.
You kept trying to tell him that you were pregnant, not injured, but he was too hard headed to listen. He means well, he really does, but sometimes he can be a tad over bearing. So, this was your chance to actually do something for him and surprise him with a nice meal. Hurling yourself up from the couch, you steadied yourself before waddling over to the door, grabbing your purse from the coat rack and heading out the door.
The market was crowded, but it wasn't anything you couldn't handle. Grabbing a head of cabbage you put it in your basket before waddling to the next thing on your list, but as you turned a corner, you almost rammed into someone.
"Oh, I'm sorry!" The woman with the cart said, her eyes scanning your figure. Waving your hand, you shrugged it off. "Don't worry about it, no harm done."
"Well, that's a relief. Oh, how far along are you?" Smiling at her question you eagerly answered four months, but that's when a frown set onto her face which perplexed you.
"Four months, aren't you a bit big for only being four months?" Now that confused you. A bit big for four months? Who did this woman think she is? Before you could respond to her rude question, she waved at someone behind you and bid you goodbye and a congratulations before going over to her friend leaving you there, still questioning what was just said to you.
Shaking your head, you hurriedly grabbed the rest of your groceries and made it back to the house as quickly as you could.
Once inside, you put everything away and just sat on the couch rubbing your swollen stomach and thinking about the lady at the market. Were you too big for only being four months along? Biting your lip, you wondered what to do. Thinking back to what you've been eating, you grimaced a bit. Well, you were eating quite a lot actually, probably more so than normal for a pregnant woman. Patting the swell slightly, you decided to cut back on your food, you knew you were eating for two, but you knew cutting back would be best.
You knew listening to others was bullshit, but you've known friends who were pregnant and they were never this big when they were four months along. Getting up from the couch, you waddled to the kitchen to get dinner started.
As you were putting the final touches on dinner, the front door opened, the sound of shuffling was heard and before you knew it, arms were wrapped around your middle as a large hand started to caress your swollen stomach gently. "Welcome home Iida." He hummed in response, burying his face into your neck as he placed soft kisses upon it.
"I told you to sit down and relax (Y/N)," Now, both of his hands started to rub your belly. "It's not good for you to strain yourself like this." He started to pull the spatula away from your grasp.
"Iida, I'm just making dinner, it's not like I'm running a marathon." He had the spatula in his hands as he took over the cooking, resting his chin on top of your shoulder. Your round cheeks puffed out in mild irritation, more so over what the lady said at the market; her words still rattling your brain a bit.
"I know (Y/N), but I'm just worried about you and the baby, remember what Midoriya and Uraraka went through?"
Biting your lip, you only nodded at his words. Of course you remembered, all the times that Uraraka called you in tears because she miscarried once more. Your hand caressed your swollen stomach softly. The poor girl went through three miscarriages before they finally had a happy, healthy baby. Iida had a point and thinking of all the emotional turmoil that your friend went through made you heed your husband's words. Leaning against his side, you laid your head against his shoulder.
"You're right Iida, I'm sorry, I'm just getting a little restless is all."
Setting the now done dinner aside to cool off, he wrapped his arms around you, one hand on your stomach as always.
"I know you are, I just want to make sure you both are okay."
You smiled at his words. He was always so sweet to you and now to your little one who wasn't even here yet. Tugging gently at his shirt, you pulled him down and captured his lips in a sweet kiss. Lips moved in sync as hands wandered one another's bodies; a dance you've both done many times, but have yet to get tired of. Before you knew it, you were lifted up bridal style as he carried you out of the kitchen and up the stairs toward your guys' bedroom, dinner completely forgotten on top of the stove.
--
You could feel your weary eyes start to close once more, dozing off for the umpteenth time this week. Shaking your head slightly to wake yourself up, your eyes roamed the bustling café where you were meeting Uraraka for lunch.
It had been a few weeks since that night in the kitchen with Iida, meaning, it had been a few weeks since you started cutting back on your eating. You still ate, but not as much as you used to, it wasn't like you gave up food all together, but you were only eating for two not five.
It's not like anything bad would happen, right?
"(Y/N), earth to (Y/N), you okay?"
"Huh?" Your drooping eyes glanced up to see Uraraka with a concerned look on her face.
"Oh! Hey there Uraraka, sorry about that, I've just been tired lately."
Shrugging off her jacket, she sat down across from you.
"That's understandable given your condition," She smiled at your belly. "Have you been getting enough sleep though? Eating enough?" Your lips curved upward at her concern as you nodded at both of her questions, a relived smile forming on her face.
As lunch progressed, you both caught up with one another, talking about married life, nursery ideas, future play dates and even spending the holidays together. She even gave you some motherly advice about the first few months of being a new mother which you were grateful for honestly, because you were absolutely terrified about it.
Your food came, but before forks could clatter against the plates, Uraraka eyed your plate. It only consisted of some veggies and crackers.
"That's not a lot there (Y/N), where's your meat?"
You only gave her a tight smile. "Oh, I had a big breakfast thanks to Iida this morning so I'm still a bit full from it, that's all." Nodding her head, thought a bit unsure, you both dug into your meals. You felt horrible for lying to her like that, but at least you were eating now.
You'd only have one meal a day and that was usually dinner with Iida since he was gone most of the day anyways. You'd nibble on a little something at breakfast to give the illusion, but that was it. You wondered if this was too much on your plate, your eyes scanned the steamed veggies and the pile of crackers on a separate plate.
Suddenly, spots started to invade you vision, making you sit up straight to steady yourself. This caught the attention of Uraraka who stopped eating, watching you carefully.
You started blinking rapidly, hoping that would make the black spots disappear, but it wasn't working as your breathing started to speed up, more black dots appearing in your vision and with each blink the world around you was slowly disappearing.
"(Y/N)!"
You quickly stood up from the table only to get dizzy and fall onto your knees, hitting the hard café floor below you. You vaguely remember arms wrapping around your form, making you sit on the floor, careful, smooth hands rubbing your stomach and hair. At this point, everything was black and you could practically hear your heartbeat at this point.
"Someone call an ambulance!" Uraraka's frantic voice echoed through the silent café as you finally closed your eyes, darkness taking over everything.
--
Beep
Beep Beep
Beep Beep Beep
Your eyes started to scrunch up, the annoying beeping sound was waking you up. Tired and heavy eyes slowly opened, scanning around the room, everything was white and you were hooked up to a few machines. There was a weight on your arm, looking over, Iida was sitting in a chair by the bed asleep as he laid his head on your arm; his hand clasping tightly to yours.
With your free hand, you gently caressed your still swollen stomach, thankful that nothing happened to your precious baby within.
Guilt started to wash over you in huge waves.
You wanted to bang your head against a fucking wall right now. You were here all because you let some words some stranger said to you, get to your head, stupidly putting yourself and not to mention your babies life in danger.
"(Y/N)?" Lifting your head a bit, you gave your husband a tight smile. His eyes had dark bags under them, hair disheveled and he even had a five o'clock shadow. Iida was always so clean cut and maintained a top notch appearance, but now, he looked so tired and run down.
"Oh thank God," He stood up from the chair as it scrapped against the hospital floor and engulfed you into his arms, being mindful of the wires and machines you were hooked up to.
You felt wetness on your neck where Iida buried his face into. Biting your lip, you wrapped your arms around him as a form of comfort as he continued to cry into your neck. You both stayed like that for a good while; just holding one another.
"Why, (Y/N)?" Pulling away from you, Iida wiped the remaining tears off his face. You started playing with your fingers as a nervous wave feel upon you. You never thought you'd have to tell him why you did this. Then again, you never thought you'd be in the hospital after passing out at lunch.
Taking a deep breath, you stroked your belly gently before speaking.
"I...It had to do with someone at the market a few months ago," You lifted your eyes to look into your husband's before continuing.
"Sh-she said I was too big for four months along and... and I know it was stupid to let those words get to me, but they did and I decided to cut back my eating since I was eating quite a lot even for a pregnant woman... I didn't feel any different......I'm a terrible mother..."
Your voice started to waver near the end as tears filled your eyes. Soon, loud sobs exploded from you as you started crying into yours hands.
Large hands placed themselves on your shoulders making you peek through your hands. Iida was there, a small smile on his face as he cupped your cheeks, his thumb brushing away your tears.
"You're not a terrible mother (Y/N) and it's normal for us to have insecurities," Leaning your cheek into his palm you relaxed a bit. "I just wish you told me about all of this sooner so I could help you." You sniffled a bit as you could feel fresh tears start to swell in your eyes, but he just brushed them away once more.
"I'm sorry Iida, I promise to come to you if I ever feel that way again." He just held your face for a bit longer; a warm smile upon his lips as he gazed down at you.
"Good, that's all I want (Y/N)." With those words, he kissed you softly.
From then on, if you ever felt down about yourself and if your mind was masked with doubts, you went to your husband just like you promised and he helped you through it, every single time.
Months went by; the nursery was painted and furnished, filled with all the essentials and extra of course. Your stomach kept growing and growing and soon, you were put on bed rest at the hospital; the doctors were afraid of you accidently falling or over working yourself.
You were fine with it all, your friends came by each day to visit you and to fill you in on the latest gossip around town and Iida, bless him. He was there on breaks, at night, when you woke up - all the time really. He didn't want to leave you alone for too long afraid that something might happen to you or to your guys' child. He'd always caress your swollen stomach, even sometimes whispering to it when he thought you were asleep.
Though, one night where he was just gently caressing your middle like usual, a sharp pain ran up your body making you sit up quickly hands clutching onto your stomach as you doubled over in pain - a harsh gasp leaving your lips making Iida jump back at the sudden movement.
"(Y/N)?!" The panic was evident in his voice, his eyes darting between you and the door, not sure on what to do in this situation.
Your breathing increased, yours hands still clutching your stomach as another pain shot through you, making you scream out in pain this time. That was the moment Iida hurried to the door, arms waving up in the air as he screamed frantically for a doctor.
From then, it was all a blur, everything happened so fast, your mind couldn't really keep up with it all. Before you knew it, ten hours had passed - you were surrounded by nurses and your doctor, Iida clutched your hand, giving yours a gentle squeeze of reassurance.
"Okay (Y/N), I see the head, I need you to give me a big push, okay?" Biting your lip, you only nodded as the beads of sweat dripped down your face and squeezing Iida's hand to the point you felt it pop.
"Okay, push!"
Your scream echoed off the walls as you followed the doctors' order. You wanted to stopped, everything hurt and was on fire, but looking into your husband's eyes gave you more confidence to go on.
"And... here he is!" When he said those words, you collapsed against the pillows, your chest heaving as you felt your heavy eyes start to close, only to have them fly open when another surging pain shot through you once more making everyone in the room surprised.
"Oh my, looks like another one's about to make their debut!" You didn't find any humor in the doctors words at that moment as you gritted your teeth together. Once that child was out, another boy, of course fate had other plans for you as you both were blessed with another bundle of joy; a girl.
Three wails invaded your ears as your tired eyes scanned your three babies in front of you, the nurses giving you giant smiles as you were handed the two boys and Iida gently took your baby girl into his arms, his eyes still wide at what just happened.
"So," You started, voice a bit dry and rough from delivery.
"Guess we beat that 'baby curse' after all, huh?"
Iida smiled down at his baby girl who was fast asleep as he nodded at your words. You could see he had a new shine in his eyes as he gazed upon all three of his children and then his eyes finally landed on you and your tired form.
"You're amazing (Y/N), thank-you." You could see some tears start to form in the corners of his eyes making your own tears swell up at the mere sight.
"You don't have to thank me, just promise to always be there."
Being careful of the newborn in his arms, he leaned down and gave your forehead a chaste kiss , letting his lips linger for just a bit longer before pulling back.
"Of course I'll always be here, you four are my life."
"I love you Iida."
"I love you too (Y/N)."
A serene quiet washed over the newly formed family as they enjoyed the presence of one another and with that said, the dreaded "baby curse" Iida thought his family always had was now broken.
