Work Text:
It was Sunday. The one day both Shouta and Hizashi had a day off that they could spend together. A few months prior they might've spent the whole morning in bed, sharing lazy kisses that led to lazy love-making until Hizashi ultimately decided that they needed a shower and some food. Those were the days. Shouta cherished every lazy Sunday spent with his husband, even if these days they were a lot less lazy, what since they had a little girl who usually got them up and out of bed much earlier than they used to.
Something was different this Sunday, though. Shouta woke up with his husband's head still resting in his chest, blond hair splayed out and tickling his nose. The amount of sunshine in the room told him it was much later than Eri would have normally woken them up, but Eri wasn't the reason he woke up. It was actually Utano, their cat, that had woken him up, as she was sitting on his nightstand meowing at him loudly. She probably wanted her breakfast, he figured. He lazily toyed with a bit of the blond hair in his face and smiled as Hizashi started to stir slowly.
Watching as the blond woke up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes and sitting up slowly, Shouta couldn't think of a more beautiful sight. Hizashi always looked the most beautiful when the sunlight hit his hair, casting a golden glow around his face, at least in Shouta's opinion. The blond blushed when he slid his glasses on only to find his husband staring at him lovingly. Next was the heading aids, and Shouta knew better than to say anything before they were in and Hizashi had finished fiddling with them to perfect the settings. After knowing him for over half of their lives, there were certain things that they'd learned about each other. Shouta didn't talk in the mornings until Hizashi had both his eyes and ears on, and he could tell with a single look at him if his hearing aids were giving him a migraine. On the other hand, Hizashi was able to tell within the first few minutes of the day if it was going to be a Rough Day for Shouta, with his chronic pain and debilitating self-deprecating thoughts. Those days were hard on them both, but leaning on each other made them easier.
"I love you," he said, voice gruff with sleep as he pulled his husband into a sweet, lazy kiss. Hizashi was more than happy to kiss back, holding his husband close in a rare quiet, alone moment. As they broke apart, Shouta burying his face into Hizashi’s shoulder, the blond grinned.
"I love you, too, Sho." Slender hands tangled into Shouta's dark curls, deftly working out the many knots that had developed in his sleep. Shouta hummed against his skin, and Hizashi glanced around their bedroom. "It's been a while since we got to wake up like this… Where are the little listeners at this morning?"
Shouta grumbled, rolling the other way and pulling the blankets up over his head. "I don't know, but it can't be good that they're quiet." He sat up, stretching.
The subsequent popping of most of his joints made Hizashi cringe, as it did most mornings. He reached out and rubbed little circles in between his husband's shoulder blades. Shouta relaxed into his touch, smiling over his shoulder at the blond.
"We should probably go check on them, before they get into some sort of trouble." Hizashi wrapped his arms around Shouta's waist and kissed his neck softly. Shouta hummed, threading his fingers into the golden strands that spilled over his shoulder.
"You're not wrong," he grumbled, standing slowly, dragging his husband out of the bed with him.
Just as they were about to cross the room to leave, their bedroom door opened to reveal their children standing with a tray of food and coffee. Well, Hitoshi was holding the tray. Eri, bless her, was holding two construction paper cards covered in glitter and her messy handwriting. She'd been improving a lot in the months since she'd come to live with them, but she still had a long ways to go to catch up to other children her age.
Hizashi was the first to break the somewhat uncomfortable silence between the four of them. "What's all this, yo? Did you make us breakfast?" Eri nodded, her face showing obvious worry as he plucked a strawberry off the tray and popped it into his mouth.
"Sorry it’s nothing fancier, but we burned the pancakes, and ran out of mix trying to make them," Hitoshi explained, chewing on his bottom lip.
Hizashi ruffled his hair and smiled warmly. "No worries, Toshi! Pancakes are hard!" Shouta had joined them by the door now, grabbing the cup of coffee that was darker, obviously his, and taking a long sip.
"So what's the occasion?" Shouta asked, taking a blueberry from the tray and chewing on it slowly.
Eri looked up at them, holding out her hand-made cards. "Hitoshi-chan said it's Father's Day today!"
This caught both men off guard. Sure, the kids were theirs legally. They'd done all the necessary paperwork to adopt Hitoshi once Shouta had started training him and learned of the abuse and neglect that he'd been suffering in the foster home he was in. Eri had been somewhat more difficult to adopt, but they'd been determined, since she had become attached to both of them rather quickly. They'd maintained with both of them, though, that neither of them had to think of either Hizashi or Shouta as their dads unless they wanted to.
Eri had taken to calling Shouta 'Dad' pretty quickly. It was only natural, Shouta had reasoned, that she attach herself to him since he'd played a major role in her rescue and keeping others safe from her. Hizashi had just laughed and told him to keep telling himself that.
The first time Eri had called Hizashi 'Papa,' though, the Voice Hero had sobbed . Shouta had held him close, smoothing out his hair as he cried. It was sweet. Neither of them had ever thought they'd be dads, not with their jobs. It was dangerous enough that they were married, but having children and being Pro Heroes was just one more thing that villains could use against them.
However, when they'd found out what was going on in Hitoshi’s foster home, both of them knew they didn't have a choice but to bring the boy into their home. He was too similar to both of them in so many ways. If you looked close enough on Hizashi, you'd see two symmetrical scars under his cheek bones, ones that mirrored the scars Hitoshi bore from years of wearing a too-tight muzzle at night. Hizashi had been lucky enough to be adopted by his moms, who had promised he would never wear that torturous device again when he was five years old. Hitoshi hadn't been so lucky. He'd been enduring the torture, neglect, and abuse for most of his life, the same way Shouta had.
Both of the men had seen the other in the young boy, and it had resulted in both of them becoming ridiculously protective of him. They had his foster parents thrown in jail, and had promised him that he would never go through that again. Not long after that, they'd officially adopted him. They told him that he didn't have to tell his classmates unless he wanted to. It had taken him a long time to really settle in and stop acting like he was going to be kicked out for any minor inconvenience.
Hizashi and Shouta shared a look and took the cards from their daughter, going to sit on the bed to read them and drink their coffee. Her handwriting was rough, scraggly, and a lot of the words were misspelled, but it was so sweet. In both of them, she'd written 'Thank you for being my dads. I love you' and drawn a picture of their family, including Utano and Hitoshi. Hizashi choked back a sob as he opened his arms for Eri to climb into his lap for a hug.
"Do you like it, Papa?" She asked softly, her ruby eyes full of worry.
"Oh, Eri, I love it! " She smiled at him and looked at Shouta, who was just staring at the card in his hands.
"Dad? Do you like it?" Her voice shook with fear, probably thinking that she might've done something wrong, which was the exact opposite of the truth.
Shouta turned to look at her, reaching out to stroke her white hair gently. She leaned into his touch, relaxing. "Yes, princess, it's perfect. Thank you." He looked up at Hitoshi, who was still standing in the doorway. "Thank you both." He motioned to Hitoshi to come join in their family hug, and the purple haired teen happily complied. The four of them cuddled together on the bed for the rest of the morning, just enjoying each other's presence. Shouta wouldn't trade anything in the world to miss another day like this.
