Work Text:

Namjoon loved to travel. He could never stay still, always on his way somewhere else to see something new. Always wanting to explore new places and meet new people. He wanted to experience new things constantly. And that’s how he found himself in Seoul, South Korea. Namjoon, originally from Ilsan, had only been to the hub city of Seoul for university before taking his leave, opting for places outside of his home to explore. Recently, he had gotten word of an art exhibition featuring one of his favorite artists taking place in the city. He wanted to experience it in person for himself.

Things worked out perfectly because Namjoon’s main job allowed him to do what he does. He worked as a business analyst for a tech company and the majority of his work was done online. Therefore he could do it from home or from 12 feet up in the air. Now… Namjoon was not a huge fan of this job at all. It wasn’t something he was greatly interested in but it brought in real good money, allowed him to travel and so he decided this would be something he stayed with for a little while longer.

Aside from this, Namjoon also had an online blog, documenting the places he went through pictures and poems, writing reviews of art exhibitions and restaurants. He enjoyed doing this a lot more, earning a large following of people from all around the world.

As Namjoon closed his laptop, finally finishing his work for the day, he heard a scoff from across where he was sitting. He turned to his side, watching as his friends Jimin and Yoongi shared a joke amongst themselves.

“What’s so funny?” He asked the pair.

Namjoon had been friends with Yoongi since high school, their friendship lasting through university into adulthood. Yoongi was one of few friends but one of his most dearest, the man seeing him through so many times. Yoongi met Jimin in high school and he became fond of the younger rather quickly, Namjoon also taking a liking to his cunning but caring personality. When Namjoon had made the decision two years after graduating university to begin traveling, Yoongi and Jimin had been apprehensive at first.

Joon grew up wealthy; affluent parents, affluent neighborhood. He was talented and wise beyond his peers. In his decision to travel, he had an advantage- he was able to make such a decision. He had gotten a job fairly quickly after graduation and had good money to support himself.

Yoongi had advised him to take care of himself.

Both were amazing friends to him and he valued them more than anything, beyond grateful their bonds held even through his years of traveling from place to place.

“We were just joking about how focused you are on your work, it’s cute.” Jimin snickered cutely. Namjoon rolled his eyes at the pair.

“The one thing keeping you grounded huh?” And with this frank remark from Yoongi, the men were sent into a frenzy of laughs and clapping.

“That’s offensive. No, my work is not the only thing keeping me grounded, you asswipes.” The three laugh some more before Jimin speaks up again.

“Hey, I know you enjoy the comfort of your hotels very much but you really can stay here with us for as long as you’re in Seoul.” Yoongi nods as he runs his fingers through his partner’s hair.

“Yeah Joon, I’ve said this before but if you ever need a bed, you’re welcome here.” Namjoon smiles as Yoongi speaks fondly to him. He thanks the couple but declines the offer, stating he loves hotels because of the different people that come through the door. Because of the different people he’s able to meet.

He stays for dinner before heading back to the place he’s staying. Namjoon always feels a little off as he steps into yet another lobby of a five star hotel. When he had told his parents his next stop was Seoul, they wasted absolutely no time before booking a place for him at the top hotel in Seoul. He thought it was rather unnecessary but appreciated their offer nonetheless, not that he had any room to dispute.

As he entered the lobby, he spotted a flier for a show taking place in the city plaza later that evening. He took note of the different musicians that would be playing, not recognizing any names aside from a smaller singer he knew, “V”. He hummed as he took a flier and head up to his room. Namjoon was always interested in discovering new artists, especially smaller artists trying to make a break. Before he could make it up to his floor, the elevator stopped and a boy walked in.

A cute boy.

A very cute boy.

Namjoon tried not to stare at this pretty boy with cherry hair, seemingly starting to lose its dye as his brown roots were visible. He had many earrings and a couple of tattoos on his left hand. He was wearing a golden tag that read “JK” and was holding in his hand what appeared to be an ID. He must work here.

“Hi.” Namjoon heard a quiet voice say out to him. He blinked a few times before looking at the cute boy who seemed to be talking to him. He raised an eyebrow.

“Oh… oh I’m sorry I didn’t mean to- sorry I just recognized you I didn’t-” The boy was rushing to apologize, quickly turning red before Namjoon could understand what was going on.

Then he got it.

This seemingly sweet boy had just said hi to him and had received an eyebrow raise in return.

Namjoon’s eyes widened before he was waving his hands in front of him.

“No no I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to do that. You don’t need to apologize for anything I swear.” The other boy still looked apprehensive. “I’m sorry, my name’s-”

But before Namjoon could get his name out the elevator door was opening and the cherry haired boy was stepping off. Namjoon scolded himself for reacting like that, making a sweet boy scared off. He was never letting himself live this down. He stepped off the elevator and walked back to his room, grumbling to himself all the way there before deciding to get ready to attend the showcase at the plaza.

Namjoon smiled after the girl on the makeshift stage finished up her performance. She had just sung and Namjoon was sure she had one of the most unique voices he had heard in a while, aside from Jimin and V’s.

“You gonna eat both ice cream cones?” Namjoon immediately recognized that quiet voice. He turned to his side and saw the boy from the elevator, except now he was dressed in black cargo pants, a turtle neck, bucket hat and a light coat. To say he looked good was an understatement. Namjoon was taken aback by how this soft spoken boy also looked like he could fight someone if he wanted to. He blinked a few times before offering a cone to the boy.

“Well yes I was but, I’d be more than happy to share this one with you. Besides, it’s winter I shouldn’t be eating two ice creams anyways.” Namjoon smiled at the boy’s panicked expression.

“Oh I was just joking, it's okay!” The boy responded, frowning as Namjoon laughed at him.

“Alrighty, if you say so.” And he took the cone back from himself before turning his attention back to the front, watching as a group of five boys got onstage. It looked like they were getting ready to dance as they sat on the stage chattering before the music started. “TXT!” he had heard the announcer speak into the mic.

Namjoon could feel the other boy’s eyes on him and for some reason it made him feel happy to know he had his attention. He felt a hesitant hand on his arm before a soft, “Actually, can I have that cone?” And Namjoon had to stop himself from cooing at how cute this boy dressed in all black was. He chuckled to himself before handing the cone he hadn’t touched over, now turning his full attention to the boy.

“I’m Namjoon,” He spoke. The boy nodded before nipping at the ice cream with his lips.

“Yeah I know. Remember I said I recognized you? You have that traveling blog. I follow you.” Namjoon is oddly touched by this in a way he’s never really felt before. “I think you’re really cool.” He almost doesn’t hear the boy say this as it’s quiet and more to himself than anything. “My name is Jungkook.”

Namjoon nods, finally a name to the face.

“Well nice to meet you Jungkook. I hope you’re enjoying my ice cream.” Jungkook let’s out a laugh as his whole face lights up. He nips at the ice cream again with his lips and Namjoon can’t help but raise an eyebrow as he lets his eyes rest on the boy. He has never seen anyone eat ice cream like this before. If it were Yoongi or Jimin he would have scolded them for not knowing how to eat ice cream properly, but looking at this Jungkook… the boy was just so cute.

“What brings you here?” He asks curiously.

The younger hums. “Taehyung-ssi is performing. Came right after my shift for him.” He rolls his eyes as he says this and Namjoon raises an eyebrow, confused.

“Taehyung as in V? That’s his real name right? He must be one of your favorite artists then!” Namjoon replies. And at this Jungkook busts out in laughter. He throws his head back before leaning on Namjoon as he laughs. The taller man isn’t quite sure what this boy is laughing about, but his laugh is so infectious he can’t help but laugh a bit with him.

Jungkook wipes tears from his eyes as he calms down. “Goodness no. Don’t get me wrong, Taehyung is an amazing artist, he is so so talented but he’s also my best friend so I just wanted to support him. My favorite musical artist is Nujabes.” Jungkook responds. Namjoon can’t wipe the smile off his face, shaking his head at the boy’s response.

Before he can respond however, Jungkook is called by someone to the left of them both. When he turns back to Namjoon there’s an evident frown on his face.

“I have to go…” Jungkook says quietly, eyes on Namjoon before they shift awkwardly to the ground. Namjoon can feel himself starting to frown as well but he replaces it with a smile quickly.

“Hopefully I’ll see you again.” He smiles at the boy who just stares at him. And it’s like minutes pass because Jungkook is still staring and Namjoon is staring back and then there’s napkins at both their hands.

“Your ice cream is melting.” A deep voice says. Namjoon blinks a few times as he sees none other than Taehyung wiping at his hands as he directs his words to Jungkook. The boy’s ears go red and his cheeks go pink and he takes the napkin offered to him before wiping off his now sticky hands.

Once Taehyung steps back, he narrows his eyes and squints, racking over him and Namjoon can feel himself being read.

“Come on Kookie.” And with that Jungkook is being dragged away by the singer. Namjoon stands there for a bit, trying to think about what just happened.

“He was cute. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid that cute before. And he was really sweet too.” Namjoon sighs as he leans into the back seat of the car. Yoongi and Jimin had just picked him up for breakfast at a diner as he told them about the boy he encountered yesterday night.

It’s quiet once he’s done speaking, neither man saying anything. Namjoon sits up as he raises an eyebrow. “What?”

Jimin lets out a noise before he answers his questions. “Don’t you think you should just forget about this boy Joonie? No disrespect I just mean… you aren’t in Seoul for very long, there’s no reason to pin over someone right now, especially not someone seemingly that young. I mean you said he looked around V’s age…” Jimin trails off and Namjoon watches from his seat in the back as Jimin bites his lip.

“What?” He spits, slightly offended before sinking back into his seat, taking in their implications.

“He just means to be careful Joon. We don’t want you getting hurt or unintentionally hurting someone else. Also remember the rules you yourself set up? No attachments of any sorts when traveling, even friendships can be tough with the way you travel for people to get used to.” And Namjoon hates that Yoongi is right, hates that just two encounters with this boy and he already can’t get him off his mind. Absolutely hates it.

Yoongi pulls into the parking garage before the three make their way into the diner. Namjoon, now in a sour mood, doesn’t really tune in to anything happening around him. So when they take their seats and he spots a cherry haired boy serving people across the diner, he nearly chokes on air.

Jimin gives him a look before turning his head in the direction Namjoon is looking. When he turns back, his eyes are wide.

“No way…” Jimin says quietly. “Namjoon.”

And he looks at Jimin, surprised by his stern voice before watching as Yoongi also takes a glance at the boy, before turning back to the conversation at hand.

“Namjoon that’s not him… right?” And all Namjoon can do is swallow hard because he’s rarely seen Jimin this serious before.

“I’m… really confused right now.” Joon starts to speak, but before anyone can say anything else, the cherry haired boy is walking up to their table wide-eyed and pink cheeked.

“Hi Jungkookie!” Jimin chirps at the boy, a drastic contrast from his attitude just a second ago. The boy smiles wide at this.

“Hi Jimin hyung, Yoongi hyung!” He turns to Namjoon before offering a small wave. “H-hi.” And Namjoon wants to cry.

“Hi Jungkook, I didn’t know you worked here.” The younger nods.

“Yeah I do, it’s actually a really nice work environment too. I prefer it over the hotel at times.” And his voice is quiet as he talks to Namjoon, different from the louder tone he used with Yoongi and Jimin.

It’s quiet for a second before Jimin speaks up.

“We need another minute or so before we decide our meals but I’ll take a lemonade, Yoongi his regular and Namjoon an orange juice.” Namjoon raises his eyebrows, impressed at Jimin for remembering his favorite morning drink.

Jungkook jots everything down on his notepad before pointing at Yoongi with his pen. “And that’s a black Americano no cream no sugar right hyung?” And Yoongi chuckles.

“Add two creams and a sugar. I’m feeling adventurous today.” Everyone at the table laughs at this.

Jungkook turns to Namjoon. “Um… would you like ice in your drink hyung?” Namjoon offers a nod before Jungkook is walking away.

Jimin and Yoongi’s eyes are on him.

“Oh boy…” Yoongi mutters.

“Namjoon, I really hope you don’t like Jungkook or anything of the sorts. He’s like a little brother to me, you’re my best friend and the last thing I need is either of you getting hurt.” Jimin is almost pleading with him and Namjoon can’t help but sink into his seat, unable to keep his mind off the pretty cherry haired boy.

Maybe fate wants Jungkook and Namjoon to
keep running into each other because it happens again a week later at a bookstore. As Namjoon is checking out some titles on display, he hears a chirpy voice speaking to a little kid from the children’s place around the corner.

“This is a story about a little prince who realizes she’s a princess! Maybe you would like to read this one?” And Namjoon rounds the corner to find the children’s area, and a very cute looking Jungkook, now with black hair, crouching with a kid and their parent as they hold the book together. The parent has a look of hope on their face as they watch Jungkook speak to their child, and Namjoon can’t help but pull a smile of his own.

The little kid turns to their parent, whispering, but in that way that’s not quiet enough that even Namjoon from the corner can hear what’s said. And he almost wants to cry when he does. “Daddy, do you think I could get this book?” And it’s a tender moment, Namjoon almost feels guilty for watching as the dad brushes a thumb across his kid’s face before whispering, “Of course you can princess.” And the little girl jumps in place, taking the book and hugging both her dad and Jungkook before running to the check out in the kids area to check the book out all by herself.

“Thank you, a lot for that.” The dad says, a sincere look on his face as he and Jungkook stand. And once he’s gone over to his daughter, Jungkook finally senses Namjoon’s gaze, smiling that shy smile of his but still boyish in the same way.

“Namjoon! Hi.” And Namjoon hums, greeting Jungkook back, amazed beyond words at how multifaceted this young boy was.

Before he can even stop himself he’s blurting out, “Jungkook, can I take you out for lunch?” And he doesn’t miss the surprised look on the other that quickly changes into excitement and something else.

They decide on a sandwich shop not too far up the street, Jungkook saying it’s one of his favorite places to eat because it reminds him of the sandwiches people in America love so much. When Namjoon asks Jungkook whether he’s ever been to America, the younger boy expresses excitedly that yes, he had been for a study abroad program in school.

Namjoon actually learns a lot about Jungkook in their time at the sandwich shop.

Jungkook was 22 and out of university. He had hopped around majors, stuck because he didn’t know what he wanted to do yet but also stuck because he genuinely liked everything. And Namjoon couldn’t help but ruffle the boy’s hair when he had tutted about how his mentor had told him it certainly didn’t help that he was good at everything either, the younger man sounding annoyed like that was entirely a bad thing at all.

Jungkook worked at the bookstore, the diner, and at the hotel, also teaching dance classes a couple weekends a month. He expressed he was working to pay off some debt at the moment, wanting to be free of any burdens as quickly as possible. Jungkook wasn’t sure what he wanted to do but he was more than happy to talk about how much he loved what he was doing now.

“I’m thinking maybe I want to work with kids.” He speaks, taking a big bite from his sandwich and Namjoon just wants him to keep talking. Just wants to keep sitting here with this wide eyed kid who seems to be full of nothing but positivity and optimism. This sweet boy who stares attentively every time Namjoon speaks himself.

“I can see it. You’re very good with people, I mean what you did back at the library was really really sweet Jungkook.” And at this, Jungkook grins around a mouth full of food as his ears go red.

The pair decide to walk around the park following their lunch, learning more about each other as they continue to talk.

“I feel like I talked a lot I’m sorry, I just get really excited. And you’re really easy to talk to hyung.” For the first time, Jungkook speaks without hesitation or shyness behind his voice, and Namjoon can’t help but to smile down at the boy peering up at him through the hair in his eyes. He reaches over and ruffles his hair again, unable to hold back the urge.

“Don’t apologize I really enjoyed learning about you.” Jungkook’s face breaks into a smile at this. “Well you know about my blog, I mainly just travel around. Trying new foods, meeting new people, learning about new customs and cultures. I really enjoy it, it’s something new every time.”

Jungkook’s smile is still on his face but not nearly as wide as he pays attention quietly to Namjoon.

“I work as an analyst for a business like I mentioned earlier, it’s not something I enjoy doing. No one ever really asked me what I enjoyed doing so I decided after a few years I would just go away from South Korea to hopefully figure it out.” Jungkook nods though he doesn’t entirely understand why this led Namjoon entirely out of his country all together.

“I respect it hyung, you seem very smart and I’m sure the decision to travel has rewarded you. But, what else do you enjoy doing? What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Namjoon doesn’t answer the question right away, taking time to think because this is a question he had never taken too long to ponder himself.

“Well… well I enjoy reading a lot. I’m never in one place for too long but I have a place in Ilsan and it’s full of bookshelves filled with many books because I love just reading. Physical books will always trump ebooks.” With this he chuckles a little bit and Jungkook smiles. “I really like people watching. Not in an invasive way but just biking and watching what different people do and how different people live out and enjoy their lives is something really interesting to me.” Jungkook nods and hums beside him, hands swinging beside himself. Namjoon sees this and can’t help but smile.

“I’m not sure what I want to be when I grow up,” Namjoon answers honestly after a beat. “It’s something I’ve avoided thinking about I think, too scared I guess of what my mind would come up with. I guess I just never wanted to accept that traveling 24/7 isn’t something I would want to continue doing for the rest of my life.” And this is the first time Namjoon has ever been this transparent with anyone, not even Jimin and Yoongi knew his fears and apprehensions to this degree. But as he looked over at Jungkook who was already looking at him, expression of understanding and a want to understand, Namjoon felt like meeting Jungkook was without a doubt something good.

“I guess I just want to help people and meet people. But that’s so vague you know.” He lets out a dry laugh as he peers down at his hands. The pair are now sitting on a bench, overlooking the Han River, breaths coming out in clouds as the evening air gets colder.

Jungkook hums. “There’s nothing wrong with vague, you’ve got an idea don’t you?” And Namjoon looks at Jungkook, nodding slowly as he takes in what the other has said. “I really do think you’re very smart, you’ll figure it all out if you give yourself the chance to,” he says, eyes off Namjoon now, looking at the pedestrians, bikers and the lake amongst it all. “But you can't be shy or scared of learning new things about yourself hyung. That’s like being your own roadblock.”

Namjoon again lets his gaze sit on Jungkook, this kid he’s only known for a good 5 days, and realizes in that moment something he was scared of learning about himself.

“Is that the guy who also had melted ice cream running down the sides of his hand?” Jungkook rolls his eyes at his best friend currently sat on his bed tuning his guitar.

“Taehyung I’m serious.” He can’t help but frown and be frustrated. This has his friend looking up at him.

“Oh I’m sorry, Kookie.” The musician places his guitar down before turning his full attention to Jungkook, frowning as he takes note of just how upset his friend looks.

“Thank you,” The younger boy says as he runs a hand through his hair.

“So if I’m correct, you like this guy. He asked you on an impromptu date last week and just like the first night at the showcase you like super duper can’t get him out of your head. But, he also happens to be Namjoon aka that sexy man who owns the blog RKive-”

“Don’t call him that!”

Taehyung laughs as Jungkook interrupts him. “As I was saying… that sexy man who owns the blog RKive and so you’re scared because all he does is travel and you’re pretty sure he’s not in Seoul for long. Did I get it right?” And Taehyung is frowning at his friend who appears sadder than he has for a while now, hugging a small pillow to his chest. He nods and sniffles before groaning and throwing his head back.

“It’s so stupid Taehyungie it’s so so so stupid I’m so mad at myself. How did I let this happen?” And by this point Jungkook has tears rolling down his face. “See?” He lets out a dry laugh. “I’m crying over a guy that’s set to leave Seoul in like a couple days and I've only known him for what? About three weeks? He came to the bookstore the other day again and waited for my shift to be over so we could take a walk together Taehyung... It’s- it’s like I’m setting myself up.”

Taehyung stares at Jungkook, shocked and sad himself for his friend. He pulls Jungkook against his chest to hold him and to cuddle the crying boy.

“For one, you’re not stupid so don’t say that. You can’t be mad at yourself for falling for someone or for developing feelings for someone babe. And you certainly shouldn’t belittle your own feelings because of time span. It takes less than 43 seconds for a person with good intuition and psyche to tell whether someone is a good person or not, even less than that to fall for someone. You’re smart and it’s so clear he’s sweet and a smart guy too. So don’t for a minute tell yourself you’re stupid for falling for a guy you’ve continuously run into for the past week and some change,” Taehyung says as he rubs circles on Jungkook’s shoulder. “From watching you guys talk that day, he seems like an amazing guy and that was just the first time you guys had interacted. Jungkook I’ve never seen anyone make you both so shy but also relaxed and laugh the way you did with him and that was only after knowing each other for a few hours.” The pair chuckle at this memory.

“Long speech short, please don’t beat yourself up Jungkook. I can’t tell you what to do because I’ve never been in a situation like this before but I can say, it might provide some clarity for you both if you talk about your feelings with him.”

Taehyung wipes at his friend’s tears, smiling at the smaller boy with a big heart.

“I’m really hoping things will be okay Jungkookie.”

“This is not okay, what are you gonna do!” Jimin was staring at Namjoon as the other man sat neutral faced at the dining table.

“Jimin what are you talking about? My flight is in a few days, the exhibition is tomorrow. I came here to Seoul for that exhibition. Then it’s to Chile…” He trailed off and scoffed, not even knowing why he was explaining what they already knew, what he already knew.

Yoongi was quiet.

“I thought I told you Namjoon. I thought we told you and reminded you of the rules you yourself set up. Do you not remember what happened with Seokjin? The way you were both heartbroken? Why didn’t you tell us you’ve basically been taking him out on dates and you since haven’t spoken to the boy. Namjoon-”

“Jimin, I’m a grown man!” Everyone at the table is taken aback by Namjoon’s tone. Namjoon has never raised his voice before. Yoongi looks at him pointedly, eyebrows sharp. Namjoon collects his breath.

“Jimin I am a grown man. I don’t need to report what I’m doing to you guys every time I do something.” Namjoon breathes.

“Why didn’t you tell us at all Namjoon? Forget how you feel about being a ‘grown man’ we’re your friends you know?” Yoongi speaks calmly, as he always does whenever Jimin and Joon get into it.

There’s quiet.

It’s awfully quiet for a beat. Like when you hear that first clap of thunder before the few beats of just radio silence, and then it’s the storm.

Yoongi and Jimin gasp as Namjoon breaks into tears. Jimin’s tears finally fall as he watches his friend.

Namjoon brings his hands to his face as his shoulders shake and he soon has his two friends on either side of him. Not overbearing touches, but light reminders that they’re there for him.

“God,” Namjoon laughs and hiccups as he cries. “I really like that boy.” And more tears make their way down his face, pooling at his chin.

“I know Namjoon, I know.” Jimin whispers, hiccuping himself. “I just-”

Namjoon nods. “You don’t want either of us getting hurt, I know.”

And it’s like this for a little while, Namjoon crying, Yoongi and Jimin comforting him before Namjoon finally speaks.

“At first I thought it was just like… I liked him as a friend. This cute boy who has such a positive and hopeful outlook on the world with dreams and aspirations of his own. But then when we were out together I just didn’t want him to stop talking. I didn’t want to stop learning about him. I didn’t want to stop seeing his smile or hearing his laugh,” he hiccups as his voice cracks. “Most of the places I go I’m able to keep friendships to a minimum, I’m able to control my urge to get closer to people who aren’t willing to do a long distance friendship or whatever I just- I’m just able to not get caught up I guess.” Namjoon says as he wipes at his cheeks again. “But he’s so special. It’s been more than 10 times of us running into each other, 5 dates in the span of 3 weeks and… I’ve never felt like this before.” And this part is whispered quietly, and it sits in the air as all three men sit around the dining table.

“Joonie, what are you going to do about it?” Yoongi asks softly, letting his question hang in the air so as not to rest on Namjoon’s shoulders.

He chuckles before wiping at his eyes again, “Can one of you give me the address to the breakfast diner?”

Namjoon steps out of the car, waving at Yoongi and Jimin who smile and nod knowingly at him before he’s making his way up to the diner. He gets a seat closer to the back of the diner and sits near a window overlooking the sunrise before flipping through the menu. He didn’t know why he was nervous, he had really just come to ask Jungkook to go to the art exhibition with him. But he was apprehensive nonetheless, especially considering it was the day of. What if the boy said no? Namjoon would understand but would honestly be crushed.

He soon noticed the other, but he also quickly noticed there was no light to him. Usually upon seeing Jungkook there was a ray of light radiating off of him as he was cheery and always wanting to make those deserving of it feel good. But he appeared dull, like someone had blown out the candles that made up his personality.

However, once he spotted Namjoon as well, his whole mood changed. The younger boy’s eyes widened and his lips stretched into a wide smile before he was walking over to attend to him. There was hesitation but Namjoon chose to ignore it for the time being.

“Hi Namjoon!” Jungkook perked.

No ‘hyung’ Namjoon noticed.

“Hi Jungkook! I actually didn’t really come to eat breakfast…” He trailed off as Jungkook stared on at him expectantly. But there was no usual wide smile behind his gaze and Namjoon quickly went on to explain himself. “Do you have a second?” Jungkook looked in the direction of his boss before sliding into the booth across from Namjoon.

“Um, sure. But make it quick I am on the clock after all.”

Namjoon nodded before looking down at the menu and then back up at the man across from him. “The art exhibition I told you about is actually tonight at 7. I was wondering, would you like to go with me?” And Namjoon had never been so nervous in his entire life awaiting an answer from the other.

Jungkook just stared for a while though. No response, no question, just his eyes on Namjoon’s. And Namjoon took the chance to look right back into Jungkook’s eyes and it was like for a moment he could see and feel all the different emotions swimming in the eyes of the other before Jungkook broke eye contact.

“Yeah, I’d love to. That would be really cool.” He responded quietly.

Namjoon nodded, “It’s not that far from the hotel, 20 minute walking distance. We can walk or take public transit, whatever you want.” And Jungkook is smiling now. Not the wide smile Namjoon had missed so much, but a smile nonetheless as he began nodding his head excitedly. “We can walk hyung. Thank you for inviting me.”

The older smiles at the now excited man across from him. “You end your shift at 7 today right?” Jungkook shakes his head. “I actually had my schedule changed because there are a lot of staff working today, so I’ll be at the hotel but I can ask for the night off. We can meet up in the lobby at 6.”

The two finally exchange numbers, and for the first time since their impromptu date a few days ago, both men were feeling happy and hopeful.

Namjoon stood in the lobby, shifting from his heels to his tiptoes, nervous for a reason he’s still accepting. He runs a hand through his blond locks before securing his hat back on his head and eyeing his watch, 5:56.

“Hi hyung,” a soft, quiet, almost hesitant voice speaks.

Namjoon turns to find Jungkook, scarf around his neck, cute hat on his head, long coat hugging his body as he holds thin gloves in his right hand. God was he so cute.

“Hi Jungkook,” Namjoon responds back fondly. “Are you ready to embark on our journey?”

When he asks this question, Jungkook bursts into a fit of giggles, shaking his head as he laughs. Namjoon can’t help but to laugh along.

The two end up making their way to the exhibition by means of public transit, Namjoon deciding that though he loves a good walk and bike ride, it was extremely cold. Not to mention, Jungkook didn’t handle the cold as well as he did which became evident 6 minutes into the 20 minute walk as Namjoon looked over at the red nosed, bleary eyed boy.

“Kook, we can take the train,” Namjoon had said softly, trying to hold back a laugh of both endearment and bewilderment as Jungkook insisted that since Joon enjoyed walking, they should walk.

But soon enough they were exiting the train and making their way to the art exhibition, arms linked… for extra warmth of course.

The exhibition was well attended, all kinds of people here to witness the art and the panel of the artist. Her name was Kim Seolhyun, and she created arts of different mediums, from contemporary paintings and sculptures, to poems and drawings, pottery and stained glass, and poetry- she was ridiculously talented. Namjoon had been admiring her art for years now, admiring the woman who at first glance you wouldn’t be able to tell was far above his senior.

As they entered the museum showcasing her exhibition, Jungkook watched as Namjoon became engulfed in the atmosphere of their surroundings. Once their jackets were hung up and they were given the special programs and maps for the night, they set off to explore. The panel would start at 8, giving them an hour and half to browse.

The first piece they came across was a frame. Within the frame was a poem written on soiled paper in the center, surrounded by sand and water that seem to be continuously flowing, as well as flowers and twigs.

Namjoon stares at the work, admiring the intricacies of the details before reading the words themselves.

The poem was titled Her’s Enchanted.

Jungkook had never read a poem like that before in his entire life. The poem was haunting in a way he couldn’t put into words as an allegory referencing Persephone made itself a common theme. The description of the poem, which Namjoon read to him, stated that it was about a forbidden love. Namjoon read the poem a few times over again, before watching as Jungkook himself took the work in.

“Wow,” the younger boy whispered. “How are people able to convey what they’re feeling like that? It’s so raw and authentic! It was almost like we were watching a scene of what was happening.” Namjoon smiled as the boy went on about the piece they had just experienced.

As they looked at more works, more poems and some paintings, Jungkook stopped at a particular piece. It was a painting of two older women. The painting was very abstract, leaving it up to the beholder to gather what was being portrayed. The plate beside the poem said nothing other than “In The Name Of”.

“What does this mean?” Namjoon looked over at a pouting Jungkook.

“What do you think it means,” questions a voice from behind them both. As they turn around they come to find a shorter, older woman with short black hair and her arms crossed in front of her chest. She takes a step towards the painting and observes it herself. Namjoon and Jungkook share a look.

“Well, I’m not sure what the painting means ma’am.” Jungkook speaks.

“And you?” The older lady turns to Namjoon expectantly.

“Oh. I’m not sure either, my apologies.”

The older lady tuts at them before turning around to eye them both.

“What do you both want it to be about?”

The question lingers in the air for a while as both men think about what has been posed to them by this stanger.

“Oh! I think-” But as Jungkook begins to speak, he is cut off by this lady with a smile.

“No dear, I would like to hear this young man respond. Any thoughts?” And with the question now directed towards him, Namjoon really thinks. He can feel two pairs of eyes on him as he looks back at this painting.

Then, he gets it.

Sacrifice.

“Sacrifice…” He says quietly as he continues to stare at the painting. The woman, as if satisfied, hums and nods her head, looking between the pair.

“You are very wise, it’s taken critics very long to analyze that one painting of Seolhyun’s. You just did it in the matter of seconds,” the woman speaks at Jungkook before looking to Namjoon who still has his eyes on the painting. “I am in awe.”

Namjoon doesn’t look at her when she says this so he doesn’t see the exchange between the woman and Jungkook. But he is nodding and taking everything in.

He gets it now.

The picture depicts the two women holding a bridge between their hearts that at first glance appears to be the arm of one of the other women.

He gets it now.

In the name of love. The painting depicts sacrifice in the name of love.

Soon Namjoon feels a soft pair of hands on his arm before he’s turning his head to look at a wide eyed but soft gazed Jungkook.

“You kind of spaced out,” the younger boy says quietly, hands still on Namjoon’s arm.

The older laughs softly before looking around and realizing the woman is still there, watching tentatively.

“I’m sorry, I guess I just-” But Jungkook is quickly shaking his head, telling Namjoon it’s okay, that’s what art is for anyways. The woman bids them goodbye and they bow to her as she leaves. Praising them again for understanding the piece. Soon the boys are making their way to where the panel will be held. By this point, their arms are interlocked together as they walk.

“How did you figure out that piece?” Jungkook asks curiously, toying with a thread from Namjoon’s sleeve.

Namjoon watches him before laughing softly. “I honestly don’t know. It’s like as I continued looking at the piece, as that woman pressed me… it just kind of clicked,” he says, finding seats towards the front of the stage, Jungkook sitting to his right.

“The ‘arm’ was a bridge.” Jungkook says quietly and Namjoon whips his head to ask the younger how he knew that, but soon Kim Seolhyun appears on stage and everyone's on their feet and clapping.

The woman answers many questions, explaining different poems, sculptures and stained glass pieces; many with back stories, and some with no back story at all, an open canvas of interpretation for the beholder.

As she neared the end of her panel, a staff brought up onto the small platform they were using to display different works, the painting he, Jungkook and the older woman had been looking at earlier. As if the universe heard him, said woman appeared on the stage, sitting in the seat across from Seolhyun.

Jungkook leans in, “Isn’t that the woman from earlier,” he exclaims. His whisper louder than intended. And with their proximity to the stage, the woman hears him, smiling down at him fondly the way a grandparent smiles at their grandchild. Jungkook’s ears go red and Namjoon laughs at the cute boy beside him.

“This painting is titled In The Name Of. This is a style of painting I have never done before, and it was quite difficult as I researched and did the best I could to portray exactly what it is I wanted to portray with this piece.” The artist looks over at the woman beside her.

And Namjoon gets it again. They’re lovers. He realizes Jungkook gets it too if his little gasp and squeezing of Namjoon’s bicep is anything to go by.

“Prior to this panel, I have always been open about my place as an ally in the LGBTQ+ community, despite knowing how the media and the state at large view and regard the community and those who openly stand by it. But now you, my lovely supporters, will be the first to know that I am much more than just an ally, I am a part of the community. And this beautiful woman over here,” Seolhyun turns to the other woman, both radiating smiles of gold as they laugh to each other, “is my wife.” And as they hold hands, ‘aweeees’ and cheers and applause, as well as some sniffles (Jungkook being one) can be heard throughout the crowd.

Soon the experience is over, and the museum is nearing its closing.

As the two men get their things and make their way back out into the cold, Namjoon can’t help but feel weighted by something. He stops walking.

“Jungkook.” The boy, whose nose is already turning red from his sensitivity to the cold, stops in his tracks before turning back to Namjoon who is no longer walking. He tilts his head cutely at the older man before walking back to him. Namjoon wrings his hands. “How did you know the arm was a bridge?” Namjoon asks the other, voice soft in comparison to the bustling taking place around them.

Jungkook smiles fondly. “The description was on the other side, pretty clever huh. Though nothing extensive it read ‘To those who want to see the real meaning, look inside yourself.’ I think the painting is meant to reflect whatever it is you want it to.” Jungkook’s eyes are twinkling as he looks up at Namjoon, and Namjoon has never in his life felt as secure and content and safe as he does right now. He has never felt as loved or as sure or as happy as he does right now though the word love has yet to be spoken. “You see the bridge if it’s something you want to cross,” Jungkook says quietly.

It isn’t clear who leans in first, but soon the two are lip to lip, dancing in the emotions they’ve been feeling for each other for the past weeks now. Relishing in this feeling of closeness as they embrace each other under the moon and the stars. Clinging to this new feeling they’re both experiencing.

And they kiss.

It’s full of passion. A passion Namjoon wasn’t aware was so strong as tears well up in his eyes as he holds tightly onto Jungkook.

It’s full of desire. A desire Jungkook has known was there the moment he met this travel blogger he had since admired through his screen, in person.

And it’s full of drive, a drive they both can feel they want to embark on together.

As Namjoon pulls away slowly, Jungkook’s eyes are still twinkling as he stares up at him, tears streaming down his face and a dopey smile on his now parted lips. Both men laugh. They laugh and laugh and cry and kiss and laugh some more, before making their way to the train station.

Once inside a cart, Namjoon turns to Jungkook, taking his hand in his despite there being other people aboard.

“Jungkook,” he begins, “I… Wow.” He laughs a little as he realizes he can’t even get his words out right. Jungkook smiles at him.

“I like you Jungkook. And I’m so sorry for any sadness I brought with me entering your life and not being sure of myself at first.” He squeezes Jungkook’s hands in his.

The younger brings their gloved hands up to his lips, pressing a kiss where their knuckles meet. “Do you want to come over tonight?”

And with that, the two made their way to the other side of the city.

Jungkook, Namjoon came to find, still lived in off campus housing though having graduated almost two years ago. The younger explained that because he was in good standing with the university, and was nearly done paying off his debt to the school, they made a contract; he could keep his apartment off campus until he was done paying off his debt and loans. There was a lot to this contract however, such as a clause stating that if he were ever late on rent or a payment to the school, his apartment would no longer be secured.

Namjoon watched with a sense of awe as the younger man explained while making them tea about how he quickly decided to pick up a couple jobs he could manage. At first, he couldn’t manage them and almost 5 months after graduation, he was called to the central housing office to discuss his stay in the apartment. After that, he made sure he was on top of everything, his living situation depended on it.

He had worked for some time as a researcher for a professor who adored him, she referred him to the bookstore where despite only having worked there some months now, he was one of the highest paid employees.

“I get worried about money often. ‘Will I be able to pay this bill?’ ‘Did I forget a deadline?’ There’s so much to remember and it’s so stressful but Taehyung is a huge help. He reminds me of deadlines if I ever forget.” The younger laughs then. “He’s a struggling artist, you wouldn’t know at first glance with how he carries himself, but he’s very generous. He once paid a deadline for me which I was very upset about at first but grateful nonetheless.”

Namjoon smiles at Jungkook. This boy who wasn’t even two full years out of college and was probably more responsible than any post grad he’s met.

Namjoon admired him. So he told him.

“I really admire you Jungkook. If no one has ever told you, I’ll tell you now that you are so smart and responsible and strong.” Jungkook grins widely at this praise, ducking his head to drink from the mug between his hands. A small ‘Thank you’ can be heard from behind the mug.

The two soon climb into bed, Jungkook giving Namjoon a pair of clothes to change into. They scoot up to the headboard and Jungkook makes his place on Namjoon’s chest, Namjoon’s arm secure around him. And it’s quiet like that for a while. Just the two in each other’s company.

Then, Namjoon speaks. “I’m to leave in a few days for my next destination.” He says, running shaky fingers through Jungkook’s hair. The younger stiffens but hums, encouraging him to keep going. “Chile. My parents booked this one, as a gift. For what I’m not sure, I don’t think I did much of anything to deserve it but they put a lot of money towards it, and before coming to Seoul, I was crazy excited about going.”

Namjoon recounts his Skype call with his parents as they told him about the surprise trip they planned for him after he was out of Seoul. He remembers the excitement and thrill.

“Then I came here, ready to spend some time with Yoongi hyung and Jimin and then go to the art exhibition towards the end of my stay. I’ve actually never stayed in one place for this long if I’m being honest,” Namjoon lets out a laugh but there’s no humor behind it, Jungkook takes his hand.

“I met you on my 3rd night here. In the elevator… you were so shy and cute-” Jungkook gasps.

“Please DON’T recount that story. It's embarrassing.” Namjoon laughs before ruffling up his hair.

“It’s embarrassing for me too kid.” And the two laugh, easing back into conversation. “I met you and things changed Jungkook.” Jungkook shifts in a way that allows him to look at Namjoon as he speaks. “I wanted to know more about you, I wanted to keep running into you and spending time with you. I wanted you to keep talking, I wanted you to keep looking at me. I wanted to know more about you and that was so scary to me.” Jungkook watches as Namjoon takes a breath, looking down into his eyes and wiping his thumb over his cheekbones. Jungkook giggles. “You’re so beautiful Jungkook.” And this makes Jungkook laugh, and the two men once again laugh together.

“I guess what I’m trying to say is that commitment, settling down, being in one place- all these things scared me. I thought I wasn’t ready for them or that I didn’t need or want them but… I want more than anything to commit to you Jungkook. I want to be able to be with you.” Jungkook watches as tears fill Namjoon’s eyes and he reaches up for the hand still at his cheek, taking it to his lips and placing kisses to his knuckles, this time with no glove to be a barrier.

“You’re going to have a lot of explaining to do to your parents about why you’re canceling that trip.” Jungkook jokes, tears in his own eyes but just like he wanted, it brings a smile to Namjoon’s face.

“And I am more than okay with that.” He responds, bringing Jungkook’s hand up to his own face. “If you’ll have me, I would like to be with you. I want us to be together Jungkook.” Jungkook closes his eyes as he leans into Namjoon’s hand, tears allowing themselves to fall onto his cheeks.

“We can talk more in the morning but since that Chile trip is cancelled, I’ll have to travel back to my apartment in Ilsan to gather things to be able to move to Seoul.” Jungkook’s eyes widened.

“You want to move to Seoul?” He asks, staring up at Namjoon. The other nods.

“I always imagined post grad or once I decided traveling wasn’t for me anymore, that I would settle down in Seoul,” Namjoon runs his thumb over Jungkook’s cheek. “I just never actually thought I’d be doing it.” Jungkook nods in understanding. “I don’t have anything in Ilsan really. My parents are in the states, and my best friends and you are here… I think that's a pretty good reason to make the move. Besides, my place in Ilsan can always be a place to go and visit.” They both laugh softly.

“Um… I would say we could be roommates but this isn’t my property to bring other people on.” Jungkook frowns. Namjoon laughs and shakes his head.

“Don’t worry about that. My parents have an apartment in my name for whenever I decided to move here. In the next few weeks I’ll work on the necessary things needed for obtaining the place, but I’ll also have to go back to Ilsan for sometime. Jungkook, I don’t want to move things fast, especially seeing as I am more recently coming to terms with my feelings for you and my want to commit to you, but I wouldn’t mind you moving in with me. You can do so whenever you’re ready. We can just be roommates who have acknowledged romantic feelings for each other until we’re both ready for anything else.”

The younger excitedly nods, eyes creased and a pretty smile shining. His face quickly changes however to a smug look as he leans close to Namjoon, “Can we actually be roommates who have acknowledged romantic feelings for each other who also go on dates and have sex?” Namjoon chokes on air at Jungkook’s statement and it sends Jungkook into a fit of laughter.

For the rest of the night, the two talk about plans moving forward, not rushing anything but both being forward with what it is they want.

+ four weeks later

Jungkook waits at the train station. It’s only gotten colder now as the winter season intensifies, and he feels silly with his large ear muffs and scarf almost covering most of his face, but Taehyung had required he bundle up to the max. It also didn’t help that Namjoon had agreed on FaceTime that Jungkook be extra bundled up if he were going to wait at the train station. And so he begrudgingly agreed, rolling his eyes as Taehyung and Hoseok, Tae’s boyfriend, cooed at how “cute you loooooook!”

“I think you guys are special.” He hears from his side. He turns to look at Taehyung who’s leaning against Hoseok, gentle smile on his face as he speaks to his friend.

“I’m really so happy things turned out well for you guys.” Yoongi says from his other side, arm around a smiling Jimin.

“Thank you guys.” He frowns at his friends before he turns back to the tracks, seeing that the light signals a train is nearing. “I can't wait to see him in person again.” This, however, is mostly whispered to himself.

The train soon stops and passengers begin filing off.

Then he sees him, his Namjoon. Namjoon smiles that pretty smile he always does and makes his way to Jungkook, engulfing him in a hug that lifts him off the ground and makes him squeal. As Namjoon pulls Jungkook into a kiss, filled again with passion, desire and drive, he holds the younger’s face between his hands.

“Are you ready to cross this bridge with me?” Namjoon asks, out of breath but full of love.

Jungkook laughs, tears in his eyes as he leans into Namjoon. “I saw the bridge before you did silly, I’m already walking on it.”
