Work Text:

"Well, Mr. Wright? Perhaps you'd like to cross-examine the parrot for a little comic relief, hmm?" von Karma's voice was smug, and Miles looked down at the floor, knowing he had lost.

Then, he heard frantic whispering from Ms. Fey, and he looked up to see Wright wearing a determined expression on his face. And Miles wondered the hell he had up his sleeve.

"Your Honor!" Wright shouted, and Ms. Fey facepalmed beside him, looking exasperated. "The defense would like to take Mr. von Karma up on his proposal!"

...What.

The judge blinked, "Take Mr. von Karma up?"

"On his...proposal?" von Karma continued, looking like, for the life of him, he couldn't understand what was happening.

That idiot, he's not seriously considering...

Wright nodded incredibly seriously, as Ms. Fey buried her face in her hands. "Exactly, Your Honor! I would like to cross-examine the witness's pet parrot!"

And the gallery exploded into shocked chatter, as Miles let out a noise that was certainly not dignified, because what the hell, had Wright lost his mind? Or maybe Miles had, as a punishment for killing his father. What the hell was he thinking?!

The judge banged his gavel, shouting, "O-order! Order!" The crowd quieted down, though there was still some audible muttering as the judge looked over at von Karma. "Uh...well, what do you think, Mr. von Karma?"

"Need you even ask!? This is a farce! I object!"

"Objection!" Wright called. "Wait a second! You were the one who suggested I cross-examine the parrot, von Karma! I have a right to do as you suggested!"

He...he is seriously going to do this. That foolish, idiotic, ridiculous man is seriously going to cross-examine a parrot in the middle of a courtroom. Is this a joke? Am I on television? Of all the people in the world, this is the man I'm in love with how the hell...

Miles' thoughts trailed off as the realization hit him, and distantly he was aware of Wright carefully questioning the parrot, looking intently focused as he did, but his brain was stuttering, struggling to catch up to the realization.

...Oh.

"That's enough!" the judge declared, finally snapping Miles out of his daze. "I think we've reached a conclusion here."

"This is a mere coincidence, that's all!" von Karma insisted, amd Miles realized that he was protesting, which meant...

It actually worked. That man...he actually made it work?!

"True, that is a possibility. However, two coincidences at the same time seems more like a 'pattern' to me."

And von Karma, looking pained at his case fell to pieces in the face of something so ridiculous, asked, "Wh...What are you saying!?"

And the judge immediately ordered, "Summon the caretaker of the boat shop. Immediately!"

And Phoenix Wright grinned victoriously, and Miles felt his heart pick up its pace in that moment.

Oh shit.
