Chapter Text
Friday
Izuku shot upright in his seat as Present Mic came crashing through the classroom door, trying to look like he hadn’t just fallen asleep on the desk.
“HEEEEEEEEYY LITTLE LISTENERS!!”
Izuku groaned - he was certainly listening now. He glanced over his shoulder at Shinsou, who unsurprisingly hadn’t woken up despite all the noise. He shook him roughly and the purple haired zombie lifted his head and yawned.
“I come bearing news, kiddos!”
Present Mic stood at the front of the class and opened his arms wide.
“I am being posted in a different area of Japan for a hero mission for four weeks, so I won’t be teaching you in that time. Your homeroom teacher Aizawa has kindly offered to teach you English in my place.”
There was a collective moan of anguish amongst the class and Kaminari looked like he was seriously considering leaping out of the window.
“But that is not all!”
Izuku refocused his attention on his teacher, panicking slightly. Aizawa’s wrath was surely bad enough, so what--
“I would like you, the students of Class 1A, to take over my radio show while I’m gone!”
Silence fell upon the classroom and the green haired boy looked at their English teacher like he was crazy. Iida was the first to speak up.
“Um...with all due respect Sensei, we’re not really cut out for this kind of...hero...work? Shouldn’t we focus our time on studies or training instead of--”
“--The students with the highest listener count will receive extra credit and a special prize from yours truly.”
The mood of the room changed almost instantly and Izuku beamed - god he needed that extra credit to help him catch up after all his numerous hospital visits. Ashido, Kaminari and Kirishima were almost crying in delight at the prospect of not having to study as much. Uraraka and Iida looked like they were already planning, so Izuku stood from his seat to go and join them, like many of his other classmates had started to do. He could barely hear his own mutterings over the combined excitement of the students when a hush swept over the class. Izuku looked up to find Aizawa standing at the door, eyes glowing red and capture weapon at the ready. Everyone immediately scuttled back to their seats and focused their eyes to the front of the room.
“I could hear your yelling from the teacher’s lounge,” he growled as his eyes faded to their usual colour.
Present Mic laughed apologetically and scratched the back of his head.
“Ah, my bad. I told them about the radio thing, I should’ve expected such a reaction.”
Aizawa nodded once and spun around, slamming the door behind him. Present Mic awkwardly looked at his class.
“Um...let’s try and ensure he doesn’t come back, so seal those lips little listeners. I think the best way to do this would be to assign you into five teams of four. Each group will need to come up with an idea for a show they can run over the time I’m gone.”
Izuku stood up with the rest of his classmates to get into groups, but Present Mic coughed.
“I think it would be best if I picked the groups,” he said, glancing at Bakugou who currently had Kaminari in a headlock.
Their teacher snatched up a piece of chalk and grinned.
“Okay, I need five team leaders!”
Izuku kept his hands firmly in his lap, like Shinsou, but most of the class had their hands waving in the air frantically. Bakugou’s hand was letting off tiny explosions as he growled at the others surrounding him to lower their arms.
“Right then, we’ll haaaave...Ashido, Ojiro...Tokoyami, Uraraka and…” he nervously watched as Bakugou’s explosions increased in size “...and Bakugou.”
He twirled around and wrote their names on the board.
“Now I’ll randomly assign you to a team leader!”
Izuku waited patiently as Present Mic scribbled names underneath the team leaders, muttering under his breath.
Who will I work best with? Definitely not Bakugou, but if Kirishima is there then maybe his boyfriend won’t detonate around me...being with Uraraka and Iida would be great, but none of us are particularly confident with radio work. Maybe Tokoyami? I feel like we have too great a difference in styles... It would be great to go with Ojiro so we can get to know each other better. Imagine if you were with Todoroki! We’d be able to spend a lot of time together planning and—
He was interrupted by a tap on his shoulder.
“Stop mumbling,” Shinsou groaned “Looks like we’re together.”
Izuku looked up quickly to see his name written under Ashido’s, along with Shinsou and Kaminari. He smiled and fist bumped his purple-haired friend. Not a pairing he would have come up with, but he wasn’t complaining. Bakugou had Kirishima, Sero and Shouji, Uraraka had Tsuyu, Aoyama and Yoayorozu, Tokoyami had Jirou, Kouda and Todoroki and Ojiro had Iida, Hagakure and Sato. Nobody seemed to be complaining so Present Mic threw the chalk down and grinned.
“OKAAAAY!”
Everyone covered their ears quickly.
“Those are the final pairings then, I expect you here tomorrow afternoon - yes I know it’s a weekend - so I can approve your ideas for your shows. You will be recording them in the studio I have off campus and they will be live every weekday from 8-9pm. We’ll sort out your schedule tomorrow too. Good luck little listeners, see you tomorrow.”
Izuku mumbled to himself the entire walk back to the dorms, throwing possible ideas around in his mind.
What will get us the most listeners? What’s a popular topic at the moment? What pushes the boundary too much for Present Mic to let us do it? Can we have guests? Maybe--
Shinsou shoved into his side as they entered the dorms.
“Calm yourself. You’re creeping out your teammates.”
Ashido and Kaminari did seem to be giving him a concerned look, so he nodded and mimed zipping his lips. They made a beeline for the sofas in the middle of the common room, but Bakugou’s team had already occupied them. Kaminari approached them to ask if they could sit there too, but Bakugou rounded on him, palms exploding.
“Piss off Sparky! We don’t want you stealing our ideas, find your own space!”
Kirishima apologetically pulled Bakugou away from them.
“Babe, I don’t really think they want to name their show with the prefix ‘Explodokills’, you don’t need to be worried.”
Izuku waved his hands.
“N-no, it’s fine. We’ll find somewhere else.”
Ashido led them to her room instead. Izuku flinched as he heard Bakugou yelling at someone else behind him and turned around to see Jirou angrily leading her group away from the sofas. He caught Todoroki’s eye, who smiled at him, and he immediately turned crimson and rushed into Ashido’s room. She grabbed a pillow for him and chucked it onto the floor before grabbing a notebook from her desk. It said ‘Hero studies’ on the front, but Izuku noticed it was practically empty, despite them having exams coming up next month.
“Okay, let's start firing out ideas! Kaminari, go!”
The blonde looked very put on the spot and panicked.
“Uh...we could...talk...to each other?”
Shinsou sighed and rubbed his temples, looking like the comment had drained the last few drops of life out of him.
“No shit sherlock. Maybe I should brainwash you guys into doing stuff, it would be funny.”
He grinned at Izuku, who panicked.
I don’t need him accidentally prying the truth about One for All out of me live for the nation to hear.
“Nope, no no no. You aren’t getting us to spill all our secrets and suffer embarrassment while you remain unaffected,” Izuku argued.
Kaminari and Ashido nodded sagely. Shinsou shrugged and rested his head on the floor. Izuku glanced at Ashido’s notebook and an idea sparked in his head.
“What about a show where we analyse quirks? I’ve got more than enough notebooks detailing everything I’ve picked up over the years and--”
He was cut off by Kaminari’s long drawn out groan.
“No offence dude, but I think you’re the only person who finds that stuff interesting.”
“And is exposing a hero's weaknesses to the world really the best idea?” Shinsou added from his starfish position on the floor.
Izuku went pink, he hadn’t considered that. The four of them studied the floor in silence for a few minutes while they worked over ideas in their minds. Ashido suddenly beamed and jumped onto her bed.
“I’ve got it!”
***
Saturday
It was odd being in a classroom with no uniform. Izuku felt a lot more relaxed and comfortable swathed in his giant hoodie rather than having a scratchy tie around his neck. He swung his legs from where he was sitting on Shinsou’s desk as he waited for the rest of his class to arrive. Shinsou suddenly tapped his leg and he looked down at his friend.
“Your favourite pretty-boy just arrived,” the purple-haired menace whispered.
Izuku snapped his gaze towards the door where Todoroki stood, nodding slightly as Jirou chatted to him. His breath hitched in his throat as he took in his appearance - who the fuck allowed him to look that good in tracksuit pants. He shakily covered his face with his hands and squeaked.
“Just confess already, I’m getting bored of your little flustered face. I’ve been dealing with this since god damn Kamino.”
Izuku lifted his hands from his face and glared at him.
“Shut it, zombie.”
“HEEEEEEY, YOU ALL MADE IT!”
Izuku almost fell off Shinsou's desk as Present Mic appeared out of nowhere. He hurriedly got into his seat, ignoring his friend’s hyena-like laughter behind him.
“Team leaders, get up and present your show ideas to the class. If they are acceptable I’ll let you go through with them and then we’ll organize a schedule. Who wants to go first?”
Bakugou got to his feet and smirked at the class.
“You shitty extras can’t compete with us,” he said as he grabbed a piece of chalk from Present Mic’s desk.
He roughly scribbled a name on the board and Izuku collectively groaned with the rest of the class, including Bakugou's team-mates. It read “Explodokills Reviews”.
“Bakugou! I thought we agreed on ‘ 1-A Reviews’!” Sero snapped.
“Shut it Tape Face!” came the reply.
Izuku rolled his eyes at the interaction. Typical Kacchan. Bakugou explained their idea - reviewing a popular show each week, giving their own opinions and predictions about it. Present Mic seemed satisfied and clapped as Bakugou sat down gruffly.
“How about Tokoyami’s team?”
Tokoyami stood up and quickly wrote the name of their show on the blackboard. Izuku read it, smiling.
“Peace-sign,” Tokoyami started “Is the name of the temporary band that me and my team will be forming. We will be doing covers of songs that listeners suggest.”
Izuku looked at Todoroki out of the corner of his eye, mind running at a million miles an hour.
Todoroki can play an instrument? Why didn’t he do it at the school festival then? Holy shit I’ll be able to listen to him play? I’m going to pass away--
Shinsou slapped the back of his head and gave him a bored look. Izuku grinned apologetically. Uraraka was writing the name of their group on the board when he turned back around.
“Hero-chat!” she announced “We’ll invite a different hero each week for an interview.”
Izuku huffed; that was actually a really good idea, it would guarantee lots of listeners. Ojiro got up next, chuckling to himself. He wrote a long sentence on the board and turned himself around with his tail.
“Trying to convince our friend that conspiracy theories and cryptids are real,” he said, giving a pointed look towards Iida.
Present Mic burst out laughing and clapped Ojiro on the back.
“I look forward to that immensely!”
Iida looked less pleased as Ojiro vaulted over to sit down.
“Lastly, Ashido!”
Izuku watched his team-mate skip up to the front of the class. She wrote the name of their show and made a peace-sign with her hands.
“Plus ultra info!” she cried “The advice and gossip show for those in need of expert advice from hero students lacking common sense! We will take in live questions from listeners and answer them to the best of our ability.”
Present Mic raised an eyebrow.
“I’ll approve it as long as you ensure that nobody ever follows advice coming from you four. I don’t want any injuries following your ‘expert’ advice.”
Ashido nodded seriously and held a thumbs up to Izuku, Shinsou and Kaminari.
“Right, let’s do the schedule and I’ll release you all.”
The green-haired child sighed and looked up at the ceiling. Looks like they were actually doing this.
