Work Text:
Miles sighed as he got out of his sports car. It was only 11am and he was already exhausted but as Chief Prosecutor, he had a lot of responsibility. That was what brought him to Ivy University to give a seminar to law students. If he was going to accomplish his long-term goal of cleaning up legal system, he was going to need competent allies down at the Prosecutor's office. Their last hire, or technically re-hire was Simon Blackquill months ago and Kay would be joining the office at the end of the year but they were severely understaffed and would need new recruits soon. After having an office full of prodigies, going the more traditional route couldn't hurt.
As he got himself settled in the backroom of the lecture hall he could only hope that the subordinates that he invited along as guest speakers would be on time. That answer came sooner than expected when he felt a whip slash him across the back.
"NGH!"
"Miles Edgeworth, you fool. Why would you even think of recruiting from a depressing and unacceptable place such as this? You know there are much more suitable and professional candidates for OUR office in Germany. The last thing we need is more foolishly foolish American attorneys." Franziska snarled, readying her whip again.
"This has become a very reputable University over the years Karma-dono." Simon retorted.
"Hush fool! You blindly follow whatever this fool Miles Edgeworth believes in."
"Now there's no reason to be so confrontational this early in the morning Fraulein Franziska, Herr Blackquill is right. A lot of Themis Academy graduates attend her to complete their law degrees. And we know the greatness that Themis Academy produces, ja?" Klavier smirked twirling on the end of his hair.
Franziska shot him a death glare as she stalked over to him. "What.did.you.just.call.me?!"
Miles shook his head. These were supposed to be his top prosecutor's. "Can we please just prepare for this lecture without any of the drama?"
The three continued to bicker up until they were called into the room. Edgeworth gave them all one final warning glare before walking over to the podium in the middle of the room.
"Welcome to the law career seminar. I am Miles Edgeworth, Chief Prosecutor of this district and I would like to talk to you all today about a rewarding career of being the district prosecutor. Here with me today are three senior Prosecutors’ of my office and we will be going over the guidelines and procedures of the Prosecution Office. First, let me introduce the guest speakers, Prosecutor's Simon Blackquill, Klavier Gavin and Franziska Von Karma."
They came out in the same order that they were introduced. Students in the front rows cowered or sunk down in their seats when Simon walked out. Miles wasn't sure if it was because of his previous imprisonment or the giant bird he insisted on carrying on his shoulder. Klavier Gavin was greeted with a few shrieks from the female students which earned them a wink in return before Franziska slapped her whip against the side of the podium.
"How dare you fools respond in such a foolish manner the foolishly foolish man with the foolish music career. You are all unfit to be my colleagues!"
"AHEM, if we could begin. We have prepared a short PowerPoint presentation to highlight some of the more important procedures from our district handbook."
The lights in the lecture hall dimmed and the large projection screen lowered from the ceiling.
PRACTICES AND PROCEDURES OF THE CENTRAL LA DISTRICT PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE.
Part I: Detectives
"Once we receive a case, the first portion of the investigation is done by the detective assigned to your case. It is very important that you have a very strong working relationship with your assigned detective."
"However, it's important that you not rely too heavily on fools to make your case. They can sometimes be incompetent and cause you to lose your perfect case. It is also important that they understand that you are in charge and that you have the right to keep track of the work they are doing. I suggest a tracking device...." Franziska smirked.
Miles frowned. "Prosecutor Von Karma please...."
"Prosecutor Von Karma is correct. Certain detectives cannot be trusted with the investigation or anything else. It is shameful to go into battle with a traitorous sparring partner. While they may seem to have your best interests at heart, they could be setting up your downfall right under your nose. It is impossible to know their true intentions." Simon growled slamming his hand down on the podium, causing the students in the room to jump.
"Uh...technically he wasn't a real detective Prosecutor...."
Klavier quickly grabbed the microphone. "Nein, don't let these two paint a negative picture for you. It's very important that you have a very intimate relationship with your detective, especially if she is a beautiful Fraulein. Don't mind the hostility, sometimes a little of that is healthy for a relationship, ja?"
Miles cleared his throat and took the microphone back. "Thank you all. While it's true that sometimes, it can be difficult to know who to trust, for the most part detectives are very trustworthy and as long as they are given respect, you will receive respect. However, if you find their work standards to be below your expectations, it is acceptable to reduce their pay so they don't continue making the same mistakes. And it's also a good idea not to reveal all your information to them as well. They tend to have a bad habit of leaking evidence to the defense no matter how much you scold them for it."
Part II: Suspects and Witnesses
"This is fairly straight forward. There's typically always one person lingering around the crime scene when the police arrive. In my personal experience these people are highly suspicious and more than likely your suspect."
His subordinates give him a questioning look. "Of course....nothing is certain until after a very thorough investigation." Miles added as the other prosecutor's nodded in approval. "To solidify your charges, it's best to find at least one eyewitness which happens quite often."
"The perfect witness is one who does not look, act or say anything foolish. And it is important than any less than perfect witnesses be 'whipped' into shape before you even allow them to be a part of your case."
Edgeworth gestured toward the projector as three pictures appeared. "I want to bring your attention to a few particular encounters you might have in your career. There is a very good chance you may have a run-in with one of these three individuals at some point. They are Maya Fey, Maggey Byrde and Larry Butz. First, let us begin with Maya Fey; she is the Master of the Kurain Village. She is a spirit medium who unfortunately is always framed for murder or kidnapped. Whatever situation you encounter her in, it's important that you know she is a very trustworthy person and is more likely not guilty of any crime. The second woman is the wife of the Chief of Police, Maggie Byrde, also known as Maggey Gumshoe. She isn't someone that should ever be a suspect but the woman doesn't have the best luck in the world. Her chocolate chip cookies are quite good however."
"Ja, Fraulein Byrde is often one of the best contributors to our office parties." Klavier smiled.
"Indeed, Byrde-dono is even thoughtful enough to prepare treats for my partner Taka. She would never hurt anyone and is to never be charged with anything but being wonderfully hospitable."
Miles let out a long sigh. "That leaves me to our third subject, Mr. Larry Butz. Now there is a very large possibility that you will run into this gentleman as either a suspect or a witness. He is..."
"A fool." Franziska mumbled, tightening the grip she had around her whip.
"Yes, he is a fool but he's also too...... what I mean is, he normally does not function on the necessary capacity to commit murder. He makes an even less reliable witness so if he is ever involved in one of your investigations, it would be best if you try to avoid his involvement and find another witness. And if you are a female, it's best if you avoid him all together, like the plague."
Part III: Interrogations
"After the evidence has been collected, the suspect has been apprehended and witnesses are identified, you will head down to the detention center and question these individuals."
Simon smirked. "It's important that the witness understand the importance of their role in your trial and that they will be cut down for any lies. However, if you happen to have certain reputation, you'll find the interrogation process simpler."
Franziska nodded. "Agreed. The witness is yours to mold and they shall do as you say or accept the consequences, no matter how painful that may be! And if they have any information that may jeopardize your case, politely suggest they not bring it up as they have no idea whether it's relevant or not."
Miles and Klavier looked at one another. "You should really just be straight forward with your questioning, do not let the witness get off topic."
"Hmph and for those that do not wish to cooperate with you, it's always helpful to dig into their background a bit to see if they have anything that could help persuade them otherwise. Isn't that correct Karma-dono?"
"That's right! Know your witnesses as well as you know the suspect and stay one step ahead of the enemy. Because there's a good chance the fool at the defense bench will go digging."
Part IV: Courtroom Management
Before Miles could say anything, Franziska immediately grabbed the microphone. "Let me handle this Miles Edgeworth. You have no idea how to conduct a proper trial from what I've seen. The prosecution is in charge and you give the opening statement, you are the most important person in the room."
"You don't have to give an opening statement if you feel it will be a waste of your time. Such a meaningless task should be delegated to meaningless people, such as the judge presiding over the case."
"Only a fool would allow someone else to have any handle on their case, including the opening statement." Franziska said glaring at him.
Simon narrowed his eyes stepping forward. "Is that so?"
Klavier blinked turning to Miles. "Herr Chief....shouldn't you do something?"
"One has a whip and the other has a hawk, what exactly do you want me to do here Prosecutor Gavin?"
Klavier sighed and stepped in-between his two hostile coworkers. "Achtung! The courtroom is your stage and every performer has their thing, ja? Some like to start with an opening act, while others skip and get straight to the show. The only thing that matters is that you put on a flawless performance for your audience. And sometimes, a little music is necessary for the otherwise somber mood of trials. Though I suggest it should be law themed music....."
"Hmph, law themed music? Such as some made by a terrible disbanded rock band?" Simon smirked. "My partner here is much more inspiring than anything you've managed to come up with Gavin-dono."
"Nein! Your partner is a violent weapon used for intimidation." Klavier shot back though he made sure to take a few steps behind Miles as he did.
"Fool! Sometimes you need a weapon to get your point across effectively. Especially in the event that the court is full of a bunch of foolishly foolish fools wearing foolishly looking clothes."
"OBJECTION!" Miles shouted slamming his hand down on the desk to get their attention. "Ahem, as you can see, that's the only true weapon you need to command a courtroom; a stern, harsh voice and confidence. It is as simple as that."
Part V: The Defense
"The most important factor in whether your case will be successful or not is the defense attorney. If you have taken your time and conducted a fair and thorough investigation then they should not be a problem."
"Unless that defense attorney is a murdering psychopath." Klavier whispered.
"However, there is one situation in which even the most thorough investigation does not always equal success. There is one man who has been a thorn in the prosecution’s office side for over ten years and that man's name is Phoenix Wright."
Franziska, Simon and Klavier let out an audible groan as Miles continued. "This man...is unlike anything you will ever face in a courtroom. He is the master of bluffing and good luck but underneath all of that is unexplainable and remarkable talent. If you want to be a top prosecutor, than you will want nothing than to and defeat this man in court. However, if he does hand you a defeat....it's best to avoid his clients if at all possible."
"That fool Phoenix Wright with his foolish spiky hair is someone that you don't want to take lightly. You need to make sure you've investigated two or three times. Keep your detective out at the crime scene all night if it's necessary. Even the most ridiculous evidence should be collected and heavily analyzed."
"Do not leave anything to be questioned. And if there are animals involved in any way, it's best to try and hide that detail from Wright-dono. And do not suggest he cross-exam it......"
"Herr Wright has taken on two employees of his own. Meine Forehead." Klavier purred, running his fingers through his bangs. "And Fraulein Cykes. They have been taught very well and shall not be underestimated regardless of how harmless they look."
Miles nodded. "They all have some....extraordinary abilities when it comes to testimony that aides them in finding the truth. They have an incredible drive to see their clients through to the end, no matter how much evidence they have against them. The man has survived death more times than anyone should."
"It should be your goal in your career to crush the fools of the Wright Anything Agency." Franziska yelled, raising her whip in the air.
"However, if you attempt to physically or emotionally harm his subordinate, Cykes-dono, your head will find itself mounted amongst the katanas in my office."
"In the end, our ultimate goal is to seek the truth and sometimes there is evil out there that is too big for the defense and the prosecution to seek out separately and that is when we must align with Herr Wright, Herr Forehead and Fraulein Cykes to make sure that justice is served properly."
"In closing, Prosecutor Gavin is correct. Though we sit on separate sides of the bench, we are united by seeking out the truth and making this district a safer place. Also, it's a good idea to at least show them respect. If you or someone you know gets accused of murder, that's who you want defending you."
"Trust me; it will happen at some point." Simon added.
"Thank you for attending this seminar. We are currently looking to take interns and assistants. If you are interested please drop off your resume on the desk up front."
