Full Moon

Summary:

The alluring full moon shines over the tarot reader and spirit medium, assisting her in cheering a recently disbarred attorney, her dearest friend.

Notes:

DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT KNOW HOW TAROT READING WORKS! I only researched the meanings and work my way through it. Even so, I do NOT try to label the cards "bad" and "good" because each card has its own intricacies. The tarot reading portrayed here is also NOT a real tarot reading and I just made up the connection between the full moon and tarot cards.

MEANING OF THE CARDS PORTRAYED IN THIS FIC
- Justice: it means justice, but since it's reversed, it represents injustice.
- The Tower: sudden change and chaos.
- The Emperor: father figure.
- Strength: well, strength.
- The Fool: beginnings, new possibilities.
- The Lovers: Edgeworth.

A little bit about this TarotReaderMaya!AU: C'mon, she's a spirit medium, I can't believe she doesn't branch into other things, and in this AU, she branched into tarot and liked it.

Work Text:

Shining bright above is the alluring full moon, her light beaming down to Earth ever so thoughtfully, holding the people fast asleep in her mind while her glorious beauty gives life to the unseen, just like how the bright daytime gives power to the life accessible by the eyes. Her power permeates the air, creating witnesses in silence by letting words get carried around by the cold billowing wind and unveiling the thin sheet masking the existence of the others through the day, revealing them by electric signals climbing down one's spine and little pokes at one's intuition. She lets everyone to tap into their unconsciousness, bridging the way to the realm of secret and truth, knowledge and desire, playfully teasing the guests with illogical allegories and paradoxes, ones that make as much sense as in the world ruled by the consciousness, only to leave them as unquestioned enigmas when she decides that it's time for her to end her reign for the time being.

Even so, now is not yet the time for her to end her dominion over the world, and one woman with a small top bun on her head knows that and the intricacies of it way too well.

"C'mon, Nick, stop lying."

"Who says I'm lying?"

"Me."

"I am not, Maya."

Flicking cards on her table with her window open, the woman snorts, eyes rolling at the voice she just heard from the man over the phone. She flicks another card and an image of what seems to be a royalty holding a sword and a balance is revealed in a reversed position. Written on it is the roman number ‘XI’ and the word ‘Justice', "I know very well that you are not, Nick. You can't lie to me."

The other voice on the line falls silent.

She flicks another card, and now the card shows an image of a tower struck by a lightning, destroying and burning it. ‘The Tower’ is written on it.

"Gotcha."

A heavy sigh could be heard, "Alright, fine, I lose my badge, but that's it. I've told you I'm fine, haven't I?"

"Your world is flipped upside-down so suddenly, there's no way you're fine, nope, there's absolutely no way," She argues in an upbeat tone, eyes still focused on her spread of cards.

The other voice falls silent once more before another sentence is uttered, "What do you want, Maya?"

"Geez, you're so mean," The woman ignores the question and instead snickers, "Like always."

The man's deep breath starts his apology, "Sorry, I didn't mean to. I got a bit carried away.”

"It's okay," She assures, now one hand on her chin, seemingly thinking while looking at her cards, "We've all got one of these days."

"I... I just," The other voice starts, full of stirring emotions, "I don't know, Maya, it feels like... a mess. I don't even know where to begin. It feels unfair."

Her eyes look to the side, locked to the reversed justice card, "It definitely is."

"But, in all honesty, I kind of don't really care what happened to me. I just can't accept what happened to her." The man's voice, which previously was full of desperation and disbelief, now is changed and filled with anger.

"Honestly, Nick, she reminds me of Pearl," The woman adds with a somewhat somber tone, her expression saddens a little bit, "She must feel so lonely and lost right now."

The woman flicks another card, and now it shows the image of what seems to be a king sitting on a throne holding an ankh with "The Emperor" written on it, surprising her a little bit as her eyes widen, but she still goes on calmly, flicking another card. Now it's an image of a woman in a white robe and flower crown who seems to be holding a lion's jaw. "Strength" is what is written on the card. For some reason, she feels that both cards are strongly connected to each other, "I wouldn't worry, though. I'm sure you could be a good father figure. I'm also sure she will be a good daughter."

A weak chuckle could be heard from across the line, "Thanks for the reassurance. She's a good girl, but I'm not sure about the father figure part. I'll still try looking for her real dad. She deserves that much, at least.”

"And what if you doesn't find him?"

A pause fills in before an answer comes, "We'll see about that."

The other voice shrugs, "Eh. I'm sure she'll be your adopted daughter."

"And what makes you say that?"

"Just blurting it out."

"You have to watch what you say, Maya."

"Objection to that, Your Honor."

One more weak chuckle comes from the other line, albeit a bit more genuine this time, "Overruled."

The woman snickers and flicks another card. This time, it seems to grab her attention more than the other cards, as she widens her eyes in fascination and leans in, making sure that she's seeing it right. An image of a seemingly carefree man with a knapsack held by a pole laid on his shoulder is revealed. Beside the man is a little white dog who also looks as happy as the man is. "The Fool" is written on the card. She smiles and pulls herself back, "In any case, I'm sure this opens up many new possibilities, right? Maybe you could start going back to art things."

"And what am I supposed to do? Hold Shakespearean plays in a remote bar no one knows about?" Another chuckle follows the sarcastic questions.

"Actually, that sounds like a great idea!"

" …You know I'm not going to really do that, right?"

"This is you we're talking about," She answers, eyes focused on her spread once more, "The ex-defense attorney who interrogated a parrot."

"Then I think animal whisperer is what I should really be now."

"Go for it, Nick! Chase your next dream! Ace Animal Whisperer Phoenix Wright!"

The chuckle now turns into a small laughter, "I'll monopolize the entire market that way."

"As you should," The woman responds, flicking the last card in her spread. Suddenly, a grin forms on her face after what seems to be an amusement that showed for a split second on her face.

"Thanks, Maya," The man speaks once again," Thanks for calling and cheering on for me."

"No problemo, Nicko Dumbo!" She answers with a cheery tone, "Besides, I'm sure Mr. Edgeworth would love to come and check you just to make sure you're happy."

A quite long pause comes before the puzzled response, "H-huh?"

"Mr. Edgeworth, Nicko Dumbo!"

"Wait, wait, slow down, why is he in this?"

"C'mon, Dumbo," The woman rolls her eyes, "You two are obviously the lovey-dovey!"

"I'm not–“

"I do NOT accept denials."

"Maya, listen–“

"Nope, not listening," With that, the woman cuts off her communication with the disbarred attorney, grinning wide like a cat before giggling while looking at the last card she flicked; a card with a naked man and a naked woman standing facing each other with an angel above them with the sun shining bright. The tarot reader leans in once again to read the words written on it and giggle even more.

'The Lovers'

Amidst her giggles, her old phone rings a familiar ringtone from her favorite show, catching her attention. Trying to contain her laughter, she reaches for her phone, expecting the name 'Nick' to be laid out bare in the caller's name, and, true to her to expectation, it's the man that she teased before. If there is anything that she learns during full moons, it’s the fact that her intuition is immensely sharp, and she's sure the man will yell at her and questions her various things about what she said before, but that's something she doesn't mind at all. She'll cheer him on with her own ways to do anything to get him back on his feet, including teasing him about his lifelong crush and using her powers under the alluring full moon.
