Sunset Years

Summary:

What if Bei Wei Wei never went to Beijing for university? Inspired by the parallel universe theory Xiao Nai brought up during his walk with Wei Wei.

Notes:

I wrote this a long time ago ah... edited it a bit... I was inspired by the scene where Bei Wei Wei and Xiao Nai talks about a different universe where they wouldn't have met in Qing University. Lol, this is my indulgent take on their 'sunset years' AU since I couldn't find a fic inspired by it! This is me writing the story I wanted to read back then~

Chapter 1

Chapter Text

It was a rainy afternoon in W city. A woman with fair skin strode firmly through the puddled ground, soaked to the bone and drenched in rainwater. By the time she reached her destination, even ghosts would fear her.

"Excuse me, but this isn't a place where you can loiter..." Tang Xi began to say, noticing a homeless woman trying to come in through reception.

The woman parted her wet hair covering her face like a curtain. Big eyes that were framed by long lashes were currently glaring at Tang Xi who had made the connection the moment she saw the woman's face.

"Miss Bei! I'm so sorry, I couldn't recognize you!"

"Just let me in Tang Xi."

"Of course, of course!"

By the time Miss Bei dried herself, changed her clothes, and reached her personal office, the news had spread all around already.

"Wah, Miss Bei has really bad luck with the weather."

"This seems to be the worst hit yet!"

"Will she have to take sick leave again?"

It was all for fun after all. Everyone liked Miss Bei... well, mostly everyone. There were still a few who were jealous. And really, why wouldn't they be?

"She's in her 30s? Tsk, it's all plastic surgery, ah—"

"Actually, she's almost 40! I thought she would be one of the first to marry when I first got here, but it turns out she's part of the left-overs. That's why women shouldn't be career-minded."

"If only she used her ability the way it should have been used."

"The flower is still a flower. However, it's no longer young and has signs of wilting."

Bei Wei Wei didn't really care if they talked about her behind her back. After all, gossip is gossip. She just wished it didn't affect her close friends and her parents that much.

Out of all the people she had been disappointed by, the one she was most sad about was her mother. She knew that her mother didn't mean to be overbearing, but...

Ah well.

It was reasonable after all. Her mom had many friends with grandkids old enough to buy soysauce! In that light, Wei Wei understood. She was just glad her father wasn't trying to make it hard for her. He always said he didn't want to let her go.

Even her university friends were prodding her.

"Miss Bei, W University's school beauty, when ever will you find someone you like?"

Ling Ling had even sent on their WeChat group. "Your mother has been calling all of us non-stop. I think you worry her too much."

"You're the last one standing now. Since Ji Mei got married five years ago, we've been waiting for the good news!"

Sometimes, Wei Wei really disliked her friends. They knew she didn't like discussing the topic. However, she also knew that they usually brought it up after her mother made her series of calls.

But it wasn't her fault ah!

All of her blind dates had gone wrong!

The men interested in her weren't interesting to her. Even her father would size them up then go, "Not good enough for our Wei Wei."

She was a beauty, a real beauty. Even now, she who was almost forty, looked like she was still graduating college. Her body was envied by all her younger coworkers.

Miss Bei sighed. She was reminiscing again. She rubbed her forehead, and leaned back on her chair. She didn't spend the years that flew by needlessly.

She was no longer Wei Wei, but now Miss Bei, General Manager of W city's branch of Zhi Yi. Zhi Yi was a company that sprouted in B City when she was much younger.Back then, the CEO of the company, Xiao Nai, became famous for having assisted in the new design of the game 《Dreams of Jianghu 2》 in alliance with the original's founder, Feng Teng.

Wei Wei had played both versions, and up until now, she kept all of her accounts. She found her love for technology in gaming, hence her job now in Zhi Yi. She was one of the longest, most loyal employees the company had.

The CEO, who was young when he launched the company back in the day, was also extremely attractive. He treated his employees well, even those in branches outside the capital. So Miss Bei was sold. She gave most of her career to helping grow the Zhi Yi branch to what it was today in W City.

Which, of course, made her the obvious choice of host when Mr Yu, one of CEO Xiao's right-hand men, suddenly announced without prior notice that the CEO would be dropping by every major branch of Zhi Yi in China.

And this week was the week she had been preparing for one whole month and... it rains.

Miss Bei sighs again, taking note that there's no more cough medicine in the drawers.

"Miss Bei! CEO Xiao and GM Yu is here!" Tang Xi says, sounding pressured.

"I'm coming, I'm coming," and Miss Bei sneezed, grabbing tissue before opening the door. Only to realize why Tang Xi seemed pressured.

Behind her stood the two men Miss Bei was expecting.

The first thing that came to mind as she was looking at CEO Xiao was—

He still looks so handsome, and Wei Wei's small, not-really-there crush suddenly made its appearance again.

No wonder it's said that the older the wine, the finer it is, she thought to herself.

Beside him, an even older looking man with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, smiled at Miss Bei.

"You were caught in the rain when we last saw you, Miss Bei."

Her ivory cheeks reddened, and she bowed.

"Apologies, GM Yu. It's a bit embarrassing like this... I didn't see you or CEO Xiao."

"Ah it's fine," GM Yu waved his hand lightly. "You're quite fast in cleaning up though. Does it happen to you often?"

"I don't have much luck with rain." Miss Bei chuckled before smiling brightly. "Thanks Tang Xi, I'll take over now."

Tang Xi nodded, while cackling inwardly ready to spread rumors of GM Yu and CEO Xiao being stunned by their very own Miss Bei's charming smile.

Notes:

I don't know if this will have a continuation... it's been a few years. Clearly I intended to write the next chapter but... well. Inspiration is hard to come by these days. Hope it was an enjoyable read anyhow. Stay safe, until next time~
