Work Text:

Will the dregs in the bottom of the barrel of existence hold some hidden sweetness, or will all the bitterness never shown before singe her mouth in that last swallow?

~

Yidhra had seen a lot in her lifetime considering that she had existed before everything else. So, when she sensed the change long, long before it happened, she realized she had plenty of time to mull over her emotions, battered down after having had to endure countless taxing years.

Uncertainty, albeit foreign, was felt first and foremost. Yidhra knew such a ‘change’ would certainly wipe out everything alive, but in what manner? Would everyone crumble to dust? Die as if murdered? Fall dormant until the atmosphere disappeared and heat tore them apart?

However, that lack of knowledge made way for the second emotion. Exhilaration. Pure, unfiltered exhilaration. Yidhra had watched history repeat itself so, so many times. Whatever came would not be another simple repetition, and Yidhra would be able to experience it firsthand.

She laid on the cool green grass and looked up at the stars. It was an odd feeling, knowing that it was the last time anyone would ever see the stars, and that no one else knew that they would soon be gone. But she found herself relishing that feeling.

Years did not matter to Yidhra. After so long, blinking and a year were barely any shorter or longer than one another. She was tucked into the woods and waiting patiently, but even someone like Yidhra wasn’t immune to the electricity of anticipation that buzzed in her veins.

These woods would fall down too, right?

Yidhra has had no need to possess her followers to interact with the world. What purpose did such an action have, especially when any impact made would disappear soon?

Oh, but that was the charm of it...

Yidhra allowed the tattered vessel that had limply followed her for forever to slowly fill with life again. Sight came to her in a flash, and now Yidhra truly saw the stars instead of pulling up the memory she’d had in her head. They looked almost the same.

And perhaps they would not look much different in the future. Living things, while interesting, really had not lasted long enough to watch the sky truly change--sunrise and sunset were simply bite-sized samples. Perhaps not even bites.

Life left the puppet again. A mortal body… so slow and heavy.

Yidhra enjoyed the familiar darkness behind her blindfold and let a low hiss into the air, which was quiet in return spare the gentle rustling of leaves.

Some time passed.

That day came.

Yidhra chose not to see but listen that day.

Humans cried out for redemption that day.

Oh, those tiny things. They did nothing wrong, but none of them ever lived long enough or thought hard enough to realize that they really did not control as much of the world as they thought they did. Yidhra couldn’t help but laugh.

Her puppet was destroyed by her side, and Yidhra doubted she would miss it.

Something much, much more valuable awaited her amongst the ruins. Yidhra lifted her blindfold to allow her very own gaze, for the first time in a long time, linger on something. A figure.

A figure hunched over the crumbs left by the unseen force that gobbled up the world.

Yidhra slithered up and spoke, her voice impossibly rough and quiet from lack of use.

“Now, child, how did you possibly survive the end of the world?”

Oh, but those ears would not have heard Yidhra anyway, and those eyes would not have seen Yidhra anyway. She laughed. Her true form had always been a mystery, and it seemed like it was still going to be.
