Work Text:
You hear the apartment door open and in stomps your roommate, Toga. You greet her but she stomps past you and into her room, not saying a single word. You jump in your curled up spot on the couch when her bedroom door slams shut, rattling the entire apartment. Wondering if you should go see if she’s okay, you hear a loud, “FUCK,” come from her room. You slowly get off the couch and head for her door, knocking softly.
“Toga?” you whisper. At first, you don’t hear a response but as you turn away you hear her quietly tell you to come in. As you open the door, you notice that the room’s lights aren’t on, and her costume pieces are thrown all over the floor. The hallway light illuminates the room enough that you can see a lump in the bed which you assume is the form of Toga. Leaving the door open to let in light, you step over her quirk equipment and sit on her bed, “Toga? Do you want to talk about it?” You hear a muffled no and sigh before laying down beside her. You can tell she’s facing the wall so you scoot up behind her and wrap your arm around her waist, she’s trembling. You draw small circles on her hip with your fingertip and murmur soothing words to her. This almost felt embarrassingly intimate but Toga is not often upset like this and both of you are very touch-oriented people. You hope that your attempt at soothing her helps her relax even a little bit. Eventually, the trembling lessens and you almost think she’s fallen asleep.
“I wish Stain were still here. Maybe we wouldn’t be losing as much,” she murmurs. You rub her blanket-covered arm but stay silent, waiting for her to say more. “Those stupid nomus lost us another battle with UA. We’ve been attacking them for years, why haven’t we won once?” You hum in response, not knowing what to say or how to comfort her. You weren’t exactly the biggest fan of Toga’s ‘occupation’ but somehow the feelings you have for her outweigh all of that. Again, she doesn’t say anything for a long time but then she turns over so she’s facing you. You notice that her hair is down, loose from her usual twin buns. You smile softly at her before pushing her hair out of her face. She un-burritos herself from her blanket and lifts it so that you can slide it and drops it over you.
“I’ve been thinking about leaving the League of Villains,” she whispers at you, her face so close that you can feel her hot breath on your face. You blink at her and open your mouth to respond but she interrupts you, “I know you don’t like what I do and while I felt I could make a change with the League but it’s been 3 years since I joined, and I feel like I haven’t done much. I mean, I’m twenty now! And all I do is chase around stupid high schoolers.”
I know you don’t like it. Her words made your heart melt and your spine tingle but you wonder why your opinion about what she does matters to her. “Toga, what does it matter what I think? We’ve been roommates for almost two years and that’s never stopped you.” The words tumble out of your mouth before you can stop them and you close it quickly already regretting what you said. Toga sighs, the breath warming your face but doesn’t respond. You hope you haven’t upset her. She rolls over to face the wall and leaves you in silence to regret what you said. You continue to lay there in silence for a while until you start to get sleepy.

When you wake up, Toga has left the bed, her spot cold. You rub your eyes and look at her nightstand clock to see that it’s past midnight. When you look around you notice her costume gear is gone so you sigh and sit up to text her.
You: did you leave?
Toga: Yeah.
You: Where are you??
Toga: Don’t worry about it.
You sigh and slide out of Toga’s bed, ready to go after her. You figure she’s at the park she usually ends up at when she’s upset and just hope she’s okay. After slipping on some jeans and a tee you leave your shared apartment. The park is quite a walk away so when you finally get there you can feel your legs aching but thankfully you see Toga slowly swinging on the swing set, looking at the ground. Slowly, you walk up to her and sit on the swing next to her. You don’t say anything for a few minutes but eventually, you start with a simple, “Hey.” She stops swinging but doesn’t answer you. So you push your legs and start swinging yourself. You make a humming noise and then say, “Toga, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. You were already upset and what I said was insensitive. It’s just hard having a best friend and roommate who’s a villain who puts her life on her line every single day.” Your feet drag on the ground, slowing you down and you hear Toga sigh.
“I’m not a villain because I want to be, you know. What I want to be is something better for you. I want to be able to protect you. You’re more than just a best friend to me,” she gives you a small smile, showing her sharp canines to you. You stop abruptly and just stare at her to which she stands up and stands in front of you, “I have different priorities now. My top priority is you and keeping you safe. I don’t know what I would do if I lost you. Especially since you don’t know how I truly feel.” You stand up on wobbly legs, your mouth dropped open,
“What do you mean Toga?”
“I mean I love you.”
Your knees feel like they’re going to give out, your face turning a bright red. You never realized your feelings for her were reciprocated. She smiles wider, making her features feline and steps towards you.
“You have three seconds to say no,” she whispers. “One...two…,” before she can say three you crush your lips against hers, hard enough to make your teeth clack together.
“I love you too, Toga.”
