Work Text:
Kunikida was not one to stay up so late at night but then again, it has happened to him as well. He was against the living room window, sitting on some cushions as he held his notebook but with no pen in sight. His notebook was held loosely as it was draped over his lap, opened but face down.
He was wearing a loose shirt and pajama pants as his hair was down and not wearing glasses for once. His vision wasn’t the greatest but he can see the night sky just fine, even if the stars were somewhat blurry from a distance. The stars, the moon, the city lights in the distance and the quiet tranquility of the night ease him into a relaxed state that he doesn’t get into often.
Oh how he wished he can be like that more often.
He closed his eyes as his forehead against the cool glass, sighing at the feeling. He knew that soon he needed to go to bed, go to sleep and wake up at the usual time. He was already ruining his sleep schedule but he couldn’t bring himself to care. All he wanted was for the world to stop, even for a little while.
Just for a little while.
Out of nowhere, Kunikida felt a light touch on the side of his face. He slowly opened his eyes and he was face to face with another person. He blinked slowly before he chuckled softly. “Broke into my place again? I can’t even bring myself to be surprised right now.”
A chuckle was the response. “Well I was going to my place but I couldn’t help but notice your handsome face against the window. I wanted to see if you’re really sleeping or not.” A click of the tongue as the person sat across from him as the hand dropped. “So what’s keeping you up, mr. always by the schedule~?”
Kunikida huffed softly. “I don’t know…probably one of those nights.” He closed his eyes once again. “You don’t have to keep me company, I’ll be fine.” Eventually, he hoped.
Not convinced, Dazai decided to take the other’s notebook out of his hands and draped himself over the other, smiling up at him. “I know I don’t have to but I want to. Besides it has been a while since we had such a quiet moment to ourselves. I want to savor this and you. Not everyday that I get to hear that heartbeat of yours…mmm…such a lovely sound…so soft and oh so alive.”
“Are you drunk?” Kunikida found himself blurting out. Now that they were close, he can smell a bit of alcohol on the other.
Pouting up at him, Dazai then smiled. “Just a bit. I sobered up mostly on my way back from the local bar. Why, worried for me~?”
Kunikida blinked twice. “Well yeah, what made you think I wouldn’t be?”
No matter how much time has passed for them, that genuine honestly really threw Dazai off. Atsushi was the second person to be that way as well and even then, it was like being stabbed with kindness. He couldn’t help but chuckle. “No reason. I thought you would push off me by now.”
Kunikida hummed in thought. “Maybe if I wasn’t sleepy but…it’d be a pain to move now. I like being here…looking at the night sky….and with you.” He yawned. “But please don’t drink so often, your liver must hate you for it….”
Well, it wouldn’t be just his liver but that was another issue for another day. Dazai shrugged as he got comfortable against the other. “Yes, yes.” With his head on the other’s shoulder, he closed his eyes. There was a bit of quiet between them before he yawned. “Now you’re making me sleepy, you better not move now. You’re almost as soft as a bed in a fancy hotel~”
“I’m not even going to start with how weird that statement is.” Kunikida but smiled a bit. “But good, you need sleep too.” He shyly wrapped his arms around the other and pulled him close. He closed his eyes and resigned himself to sleeping with his back half on the cushions and half on the wall. “…Will you still be here when morning comes?”
Dazai didn’t say anything for a bit. He opened his eyes and out of the corner of it, he saw the stars, the moon and the lights of the city just twinkling from a distance. He was many things but he wasn’t a liar. Kunikida brought something out of him that he didn’t know he even had and it was becoming more obvious as each day passed. He sighed and then smiled. “If you want me to be.”
“….I do…” Kunikida can only say before he was drifting off slowly. He murmured something but it was unclear even for Dazai as he finally went to sleep.
Though close to following suit, Dazai moved his head up and noticed that the moon was on a full phase and the light was shining down at their general direction. It was beautiful though, to see such a sight, especially with the light shining more on Kunikida, making him seem like an angel that was too pure for the cruel world.
And this demon snagged that angel before anyone else did.
A cruel way to think about it but it was what it was. Dazai was changing but will be become better than he was the day before? Perhaps. But if Kunikida hasn’t given up on him then maybe there was hope for him after all.
For now, he can rest easy for once and feel content with what he had. Sleep and being with the one he cared about. All was right with the world, even at night.

In the early hours of the morning, the two slowly woke up and promptly yelled before falling to the floor, groaning from the impact than the minor pain they just experienced.
The night was fun and all but the sun was merciless as they were almost blinded by its powerful rays. Dazai whined and Kunikida grumbled, both still sleepy. They soon looked at each other and their expressions softened as they shared a laugh.
It was going to be a good day, here’s hoping.
