Work Text:

1:

When Apollo sees Mr Gavin’s first smile he has to resist every nerve in his body itching for him to roll his eyes. The guy oozes charm and confidence the second he slides his way into view, a smug smirk on his stupidly handsome face as he wins Trucy over with his generosity and chivalry. Apollo could swear the guy was doused in glitter with how much he seemed to sparkle in the few seconds they spoke. It reminds him of a star, all twinkly and untouchable.

Trucy isn’t wrong when she calls him a prince. A cocky and pompous prince, but a prince nonetheless.

Although Ema’s description is equally accurate.

Glimmerous fop.

Apollo only has to think back to the way Mr Gavin’s eyebrows raised as he shot them a warm but disinterested smile. More for the novelty of appearing welcoming than having any actual feeling behind it.

It was a practised smile. Rehearsed. The guy was like an actor.

Apollo shudders, and turned back to the crime scene.

Glimmerous indeed.

2:

The second smile is just as infuriating. It turns out that Mr Gavin is in fact Prosecutor Gavin, and if that doesn’t grate Apollo’s teeth then nothing will.

When Prosecutor Gavin sends Apollo a shit eating grin across the courtroom, all twinkling eyes and a mocking wink, it isn’t eye rolling that Apollo has to resist this time. He thinks of him like an asteroid at that moment, hell bent on destroying Apollo in any way he can. Apollo flexes his fingers angrily.

Luckily Trucy stops him from straight up decking his opponent in law by focusing his attention back on the case at hand.

Right. Yes.

Apollo has a client. He isn’t about to let some rockstar lawyer god get the better of him.

Fixing Prosecutor Gavin with a determined glare, he clenches his fist a couple times and takes a few deep breaths. He ignores the answering smile.

He can do this.

3:

Apollo watches with the rest of the crowd as the Gavineers dominate the stage, unable to stop himself gasping along with the other fans when one of the members performs some insane gymnastics trick that should have them winding up in hospital but somehow doesn’t.

The final notes of a song play out, and the first set of the night finishes, only to be met with a wave of noise unlike any Apollo has ever heard. Fans are screaming, laughing, crying, and some are managing all three at once. The Gavineers hop off stage for a quick break and Apollo finds himself being dragged by Trucy towards the dressing rooms.

She’s practically buzzing when they knock on the Gavineers’ door, her eyes wide and sparkling with unadulterated glee. The moment the door opens Trucy throws herself forwards into the room, already shouting about how amazing the band is.

Klavier laughs and ruffles her hair, commenting teasingly on her good mood and high spirits. Then his eyes meet Apollo’s and Apollo can feel the breath catch in his throat.

The look that Klavier is sending him is so...bright? A brilliantly wide smile plastered on his face, eyes crinkling with elation and filled with so much emotion that Apollo has to take a step back.

The radiant joy gets ever closer as Klavier moves until he is right in Apollo’s face and Apollo can 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙 the emotions pouring out of the prosecutor and into the room around them. God, he can almost taste the exhilaration.

He breathes in shakily and tries to match Klavier’s smile as best he can.

“You were amazing out there.”

The answering grin seems to flood the room with light and Apollo realises in a moment of stunned appreciation that Klavier Gavin is actually the Sun personified. He can feel the heat of the beaming smile trickling over his face. Or is he blushing?

God he hopes he’s not blushing.

Then Klavier is lifting him off the floor and spinning him around at a dizzying pace to the delight and raucous laughter of Trucy. He thumps at the musician’s shoulder halfheartedly and squawks to be let down.

Then Klavier smiles again and Apollo decides maybe he doesn’t mind so much.

4:

Klavier’s eye is twitching from across the courtroom. Apollo doesn’t even need to use his bracelet to perceive it, it’s so glaringly obvious that something is wrong.

His hand is clenched as well, Apollo notes, and there’s an angry crease between his eyebrows as he stares down his brother. Practically burning holes into the ground Kristoph stands on.

But the most unsettling part is the tight smile that Klavier is forcing onto his face. The corners of his lips seem to almost be pulled taut from the effort it’s taking him to maintain some level of composure. More of a grimace than anything else. Like a black hole, Apollo realises abruptly, terrifying, destructive and almost unnatural.

Apollo gulps, and tries to focus on something else. His eyes land on Kristoph.

An ugly snarling smirk is crowding the ex-defence attorney’s face. It twists his features into something horrid, bulging his eyes until Apollo can see nothing but the writhing grotesque creature that the man is.

He looks back at Klavier.

The smile is disappearing. Dripping off his face and revealing the hurt underneath. The raw pain and fear that shines from his eyes, the fingers that tremble as he reaches for another piece of evidence, and the jaw that clenches whenever Kristoph raises his voice.

Klavier’s eyes meet Apollo’s for just a second.

The smile is back when Apollo looks again.

5:

Klavier’s fifth smile is probably Apollo’s favourite.

He sees the first smile frequently on TV, during interviews when the celebrity switches on his charismatic persona and woos his audience with the welcoming warmth he radiates daily.

He sees the second smile several times during his career as a defence attorney. The smug smirk from the prosecutor greets him before each trial, a wink always accompanying it in a way that never fails to wind up Apollo.

He sees the third smile after the musician finishes one of his solo performances, each version as blinding and joyful as the last. The Gavineers may have disbanded but that smile will never be diminished.

He sees the fourth smile only a couple of times. It makes fleeting appearances whenever Kristoph or Daryan are mentioned, a twisted grimace sliding across the victim’s face for just a moment.

But the fifth smile is Klavier’s best smile.

For when he doesn’t have to be a celebrity, or a prosecutor, or a musician, or a victim.

When he just gets to be Klavier.

A dorky german lawyer who blushes brightly at compliments, stops to pet cats in the street, cares deeply for his motorbike, and manages to build up enough confidence to ask Apollo out on a date.

And when Apollo says yes, the smile that crosses Klavier’s face makes every smile up until that moment completely worth it.

There is so much tenderness and gentle warmth directed through that small smile, and Apollo realises that he was wrong about Klavier being a star, or an asteroid, or the sun, or even a black hole.

Klavier is the entire Universe.

And when Apollo kisses him for the first time, he isn’t surprised that as he leans away and gives Klavier a shy grin, the Universe grins back.

Yeah.

Smile number five is definitely Apollo’s favourite.
