"- he's not going to make it, Dazai."
The horrifying words the mafia-doctor had emotionlessly said, repeatedly spun through the boy's head. He didn't answer, couldn't answer. He just sunk to the floor, his head helplessly between his shaking knees. He didn't care if he may seemed weak.
"It's time that we turn the machines off."
He lifted his head to stare blanky Chuuya's still form, that was completely covered up in bandages as if he were to mock the brunette. Only his reddish curls - that stood out against Chuuya's white bandages, white skin, white lips and white bed - were visible from where Dazai had let himself fall on the floor.
He wanted to scream in protest, beg the doctors to give Chuuya some more time. Yet, he didn't. He already knew it was pointless. Chuuya had been in coma for months now and Dazai had spend almost every second seated next to his bed, hoping the other would just open his mocking blue eyes already.
He had long known that Chuuya perhaps wouldn't make it.
Yet, those confirming words hurt.
They hurt so much.
The only sounds in the room were the beeping noises of the machinery attached to Chuuya, the redhead's calm and steady breaths, accompanied by Dazai's choked attempts to breathe and to not throw up on the floor.
He somewhat got himself together and stood up. He kicked his shoes off to climb into the hospital bed with Chuuya, yet careful not to injure the boy any further. He ignored the muttered sounds of protest coming from one of the nurses. He wriggled himself underneath the blankets and underneath the boy himself. He then proceeded to wrap his own bandaged-covered and shaking arms around the redhead, making Chuuya's petit and cool frame rest against his own body. He couldn't bring himself to say goodbye - saying his farewells to Chuuya made it too real - so he decided to just sing.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine."
He softly sang, his voice small and hoarse from the tears he was desperately trying to force back. He covered his face in the red curls, but even they seemed ill and didn't smell like Chuuya's warm scent at all anymore. They smelled like hospital, illness and death.
"You make me happy, when skies are grey."
He continued, completely ignoring the doctors that were fuzzing around them. Dazai's head was filled with spinning images of their time together. The inside jokes, the bickering, the shared secrets and smiles. Chuuya had been there at his highest and lowest points in life.
"You'll never know, dear, how much I love you."
He sang softly, trying not to think about the truth those words held. His voice broke hopelessly at the end, yet he continued.
"Please don't take my sunshine away."
He whispered, in his now completely broken voice. He felt tears stinging his eyes and his heart ached painfully, almost as if he were to die as well.
He wouldn't mind dying alongside his partner at all, to be honest.
The language the doctors were speaking didn't make sense to the brunette anymore. He tried to see what they were doing to his only friend, but the tears in his eyes made it impossible to see. He then decided to focus on the beeping sound of Chuuya's heartbeat, knowing that it would be the last time he would hear them.
"Please don't take my sunshine away."
He forced the finishing words of the song over his lips, halfheartedly begging to whatever god was out there to just wake the redhead up. Tears were streaming freely over his face as Chuuya's heartbeat became more unsteady and slower.
And slower.
And slower.
Until it just stopped, causing the machine to beep annoyingly long and loud, telling the world that Nakahara Chuuya had finally died.
Chuuya died along with his hopes to ever see the redhead alive again.
His only sunshine, the only person who made it bearable to live, was gone forever.
Dazai, the emotionless Demon Prodigy who never cried, just sobbed.
And sobbed.
And sobbed.
