Chapter Text
“You can’t be a hero…”
He knows that. Ever since he turned four-years-old, Izuku was told that he couldn’t be a hero because he didn’t have a quirk. He understood later that sure, fine, they were right. It was impossible and that he’s asking for trouble if he tried. He accepted that he will never get a quirk.
What bothers him, was that people tell him he can’t do anything at all because he was quirkless.
“You can’t do that, your quirkless”
“That’s too hard, let someone who has a quirk take care of it.”
“It’s risky because you don’t have a quirk.”
“This isn’t something a quirkless boy should do.”
What makes him being quirkless has anything to do with it. Izuku couldn’t accept that. He knew he couldn’t live his dreams of being a hero. So he decides to find something else. Of course, everyone stomps down any hope he has in life. But Izuku was determined. He was going to keep fighting, keep trying. No matter how much it hurt.
Katsuki is going to be the best hero. He already knows he will be number one. Everyone always told him. Even his childhood friend, Deku.
“Kacchan you’re amazing!”
Everyone told him he was amazing. He agreed. His quirk was powerful and strong and with more practice, it will be the best. So, of course, he had to go to U.A. and train there to be number one. He knew none of his classmates could get into that school and that he would be the first. But, then he hears he’s not the only one who wants to go.
“Midoriya, you want to go to U.A. too right?” their teacher asks.
Everyone turns to him and Katsuki couldn’t even believe it. Izuku nods and the teacher sighs.
“UA is a hero school-”
“Ah… here we go again.”
“It’s impossible.”
Everyone whispers around him. Izuku sighs. They didn’t know, no one ever lets him speak for himself. He can’t get into the hero course, but U.A. is still a good school regardless. That means, no matter where he goes after high school, U.A. helped him with their top education. No one just takes the time to listen to him. Izuku looks down at his lap, balling his fists. He’s going to try. He’s going to U.A. be it the hero course or not. It’s still his dream.
Katsuki turns and slams his hands on Izuku’s desk. He jumps and looks up at him. Katsuki glares at him and is yelling, but Izuku tries to tune it out. Katsuki can’t believe that he still wants to go to U.A. to be a hero. He can’t do it, everyone knows. Katsuki will make sure that dumb Deku knows it.
The class goes on as usual and before he knows it’s the end of the day and Izuku is exhausted. He just wants to go home and relax. He packs up his bag with his books and supplies but as he puts his hero journal in next it is taken from him. Izuku looks to see Katsuki flipping through his journal, Katsuki’s followers behind him.
“You still doing this dumb crap, Deku.” Katsuki closes the journal.
“It’s not dumb Kacchan.” Izuku tries to reach for it but Katsuki puts it out of reach.
“You’ll never be a hero Deku,” Katsuki places the journal between his palms and explodes the journal. “How can you be a hero if you’re quirkless? You can’t so just give up. You’ll never make it U.A. without a quirk so why even bother trying. Save yourself the humiliation and don’t apply at all.”
“Kacchan…” Izuku looks down at his feet. Katsuki walks past him to his followers who are laughing.
“You know Deku if you want to be a hero that badly there is another way,” Katsuki says on the way out. Izuku turns to look at him.
“Take a swan dive off the roof and pray you will be born with a quirk in your next life.” He says and his followers laugh and leave. Izuku stands there by himself, holding in his tears as best he can.
After a moment to collect himself, Izuku goes down to find his notebook in a small koi pond and takes it out. It’s burnt but once it dries it should be fine. Izuku looks up at the sky and then to the roof.
“What would he have done if I had jumped? Think before you speak Kacchan.”
Izuku opens the door to his apartment and takes off his shoes. He goes to his room and puts his bag down. He falls back on his bed and takes a breath. Then all at once, he cries. The tears come running down his face. He tries to wipe away his tears but more keeps coming and he sits up and tries to get a hold of himself. He then hears a knock on his door.
“Izuku? Are you there?” His mom, Inko, asks from outside. “I made dinner if you want to eat it now.”
Izuku looks at the door for a minute and then tries to wipe his eyes. He goes and opens the door to see his mom smiling, only for it to turn to concern.
“Izuku what’s wrong? Why are you crying?” She says pulling out a handkerchief and wiping his tears away. Izuku then cries even more and he hugs her. She hugs him back and rubs his back, trying to comfort him as best she could.
After a few minutes, Izuku pulls away.
“Mom…” he speaks.
“Yes, dear? What is it?”
“I’m tired.”
“Do you want to go to bed?” she puts a hand on his cheek and makes him look at her. He shakes his head.
“I can’t do this anymore,” Izuku wipes his eyes, and Inko waits. “I can’t go to that school. I can’t take it anymore. It’s worse, I don’t like it there.”
Izuku looks away from his Inko looks at her boy for a moment. She studies Izuku’s face and sighs.
“Okay sweetie,” Izuku looks at his mom who gives a warm smile. He relaxes and she continues.
“How can I make it better? How can I help?”
He regrets it. What he said to Deku yesterday. Katsuki knows what he said was way out of line and that it was wrong to say something like that to Deku. He should apologize, right? But how?
He walked into class this morning and sat at his desk. All the other “extras”, his mind supplies, show up and take their seats. Deku however, doesn’t walk into class nor is he in his seat when the bell rings and the teacher shows up. Even during attendance, he doesn’t call for Deku. None of his other classmates seem to care. Deku doesn’t show up for the rest of the day. He asks around and no one knows where he is, not even the teacher. Katsuki couldn’t believe it.
“ That nerd is probably sick. Dumb Deku.” He thinks and just moves on with his day. Why does he care about that nerd?
However, when Deku doesn’t show up the next day, the day after that, and then soon the following week, and then the week after that, he is sorta concerned. He asks his parents about it and his dad shrugs but his mom tells him to keep quiet and not to interrupt her.
“I didn’t think you would care to ask about it, so I didn’t tell you earlier,”
“What are you talking about?” he asks and she puts a finger up to signal to wait. He then shuts up.
“They both moved away,” Katsuki sits up.
“What?”
“They moved out. I think it was something of her getting a new job and something with Izuku’s schooling.”
“Where did they go?” Katsuki asks and his mom shrugs.
“I don’t know honestly. When she told me about it was the last minute thing and that they had to hurry to pack. All I know is that they went to a new city.”
He couldn’t believe it. Katsuki couldn’t believe that Deku just up and left. It’s almost as if he disappeared. He lays on his bed and looks at his phone. His finger hovers over Deku’s contact information. Why he still has it even he doesn’t know. All he knows is that something in him is telling him to contact him.
But what would he say? He said something nasty to him and the look on Deku’s face that day was scary in his mind. Deku’s face was blank and empty instead, maybe intimated or scared like always. They also weren’t on the best of terms either. Katsuki turns off his phone and puts it away. He’ll just try another time. Maybe that nerd will try for the U.A. entrance exam.
Izuku never does go to the entrance exam at U.A. cause Kastuki never sees him. The one time he tries to contact the nerd, the number is out of service meaning the nerd changed his number. The Bakugous never find out where they moved to. Like the Midoriyas are trying to keep it a secret or something. No one else knows either, but it wasn’t like Izuku had many other friends.
Katsuki now sits at his desk in U.A. after making it into the hero course. But instead of feeling proud and happy that he is here, he can’t help but feel guilty about it and that being here doesn’t sit right with him. Because in the back of his mind, something is telling him that he messed up. He shakes it off and tries to focus, he is going to be the number one hero after all.
He just can’t help but wonder one thing.
“I wonder how Deku is doing?”
