Dad's for Deku, Day 4: David Shield

Summary:

Izuku was adopted By the one of only David Shield at a very young age. sadly he gets a little bullied for this and copes for it in some self neglectful ways. luckily his dad and older sister are there to make sure hes ok and knows he's loved.

Notes:

here's another deku dad fic. i honestly dont know where i got the idea to do david but i did. and listen i know i ended up focusing more on Melissa than David but i couldn't help myself. the sibling energy is strong within this one. also in case you were wondering, they are more american than Japanese due to the circumstances.

Work Text:

It was another normal day on I-Island. The sky was clear, bright, and blue. Few clouds drifted overhead the metallic island that as usual bursted with life. Children ran around with balloons and little holographic toys. couples strolled about the red bricked roads admiring the perfectly placed flower beds. Bubbles drifted lazily amongst the crowds of people. All in all a lovely day. Not that Izuku was out there to see it. No, the boy was currently holled up in the workshop tinkering with a new invention. His notebook was open next to him and he often referenced it and the blueprints posted on the wall above his workbench. As he worked a female voice called out to him from outside the white and blue workshop “IZUKU! DAD SAYS DINNERS READY!” izuku called back “OK! BE THERE IN A MINUTE!” that was the wrong answer apparently as the answer he received was “IZUKU, NOW!” the door opened and the green haired boy set the small cubed item down “im working on something right now. Just let me finish this one thing.” he looked over to the intruder, even though the room was also hers. The blonde rolled her blue eye and reached up to adjust her glasses. “You say that but then you end up just needing to do one more thing, and then another, and another. In the end you spend hours and hours on that thing.”

“I do not.”

“You do. I know you.” she picked up his notebook and closed it “come eat right now or i'm not giving this back.” Izuku shot out of his chair immediately “Melissa.”

“Izuku” said boy reached for his notebook and she held it away “give it back.”

“Nope”

“Melissa just give it back”

“Not until you eat.” she moved back and crossed around to the other side of the table in the middle of the room holding tools and equipment. The boy held onto the table on the other side and they slowly moved around the table staring each other down, then Mellissa bolted out the still open door. Izuku quickly followed after her “MELLISSA! YOU ROTTEN SISTER!”

“IT’S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD LITTLE BROTHER!”

“OWN GOOD MY ASS! GIVE IT BACK SIS!” they ran through the house and into the kitchen where another voice joined in "hey. Language! And what is going on?" They both froze turning to the brown haired man setting the table. In unison the two responded "sorry dad." Then Izuku stepped forward "but she won't give me back my journal!" He pointed at her like a petulant child and she in return gasped dramatically and pointed back " You never listen when we ask you to do basic human things to live and be healthy! You need an intervention. Right dad? Intervention, intervention, intervention!" She started chanting pumping her fist in the air with every repeat of the word. The freckled boy glared at her and what started as a soft almost ringing noise escalated to a full on high pitched screeching whine as he balled his fists and pounced on his slightly older sister. She yelped and giggled just barely dodging out of his way and ran to hide behind their dad. She had been in enough physical disagreements with her brother to know that while they could both deal with the damage and quickly return to being attached at the hip as always after their little roughhousing squabbles their father and their house could not. While they could most definitely afford it repairs didn't come cheap and it was the principal of the thing. But they both tended to be a little...destructive whenever they fought hand to hand. Melissa was a thrower and Izuku tended to not only follow suit but his clumsy nature had him accidentally damaging other items, particularly the wall. Neither habit was good and the long lectures they received from their father already weren't worth it, but the loss of workshop privileges were worse. Right now Melissa was trying to do good by her little brother with this 'intervention' and getting them both in trouble would negate that. Their dad sighed loudly glaring at Izuku making the boy stop in his tracks as he rounded the kitchen table. He then turned to his daughter and held his hand out with that same disapproving glare. She handed him the notebook looking down in shame and he handed it back to his son.

He honestly didn't expect the level of anger his children could reach when they got on each other's nerves. In fact to this day it still gave the man whiplash whenever he witnessed the two go from inseparable to at each others throats to once again the best of friends. As rare as it was. David supposes he wouldn't ever really get it as he grew up an only child. While he accepted this he did wish he had siblings if only to be aware of this and be able to prepare when he decided to adopt the boy. That aside, everyone knew Izuku's notebooks were a sensitive thing, sometimes more so than his inventions. "Melissa I get that you're concerned but you know better than to take his journal of all things." He turned his attention back to the boy "and Izuku. Melissa is right. You need an 'intervention'. We're getting worried. You've gotten worse when it comes to fixating on your inventions." Just last week the boy shut himself in the workshop for 3 days, in that time he didn't sleep, hardly ate, and rarely left his bench for anything other than a quick bathroom break and refilling a water bottle. It was starting to worry both David and his daughter immensely. Izuku was going through something, they knew he was. He often stress built. But this time he wouldn't say what, not even to Melissa and they were so close. Not to mention it was getting worse and seemed to go on longer than usual.

"We can properly talk about that later though. For now apologies are in order and then dinner ok?" David set his blue eyes on his children as they both shifted in place, shrinking away from the look. "Sorry Little bro. I was just worried and at this point kinda desperate. I didn't know what else to do, you haven't eaten a proper meal or taken a break in a while. I may have gone overboard but I was just trying to look out for you Izu. Im sorry." Melissa gave Izuku a guilty worried look fidgeting with her hands as she spoke. The boys gaze softened "awe Lissy. Im sorry too sis. I freaked out when you were just trying to help and I worried you. Its your job after all, being the older sibling and all. I'm sorry I've been a little closed off. I promise I'll tell you later ok." She nodded "so we're cool?"

"We're cool." The two hugged each other "But don't touch my shit again without my permission four eyes."

"Sure thing squeaky toy." He pulled her hair slightly and she pinched him though both were grinning "owe." David sighed again "kids." His stern voice had the two smiling kids turn to stare at their father for a while before they busted out laughing.

With everyone calmed down and ok the family finally sat down for dinner. Sharing idle chit chat about their day and current projects the three found themselves much calmer than they had been for a few days. It was nice. After dinner Izuku offered to wash the dishes but both his father and sister insisted he not do any more work. Instead David set to cleaning up and suggested the two teens pick out a movie for them to watch together as a family. The younger of the two had the unbelievable urge to get back to the workshop and continue working on his current project. But looking at the eager and slightly concerned expression of his sister he sighed and the urge dissipated till it was nothing more than a grain of longing in the back of his head. "Sure. A movie sounds great."

The two scrolled through movie after movie quiping on why they should or shouldn't pick any given title they stumbled upon. Izuku groaned pulling his legs up on the couch and grabbing one of the throw pillows and hugging it to his chest as he nuzzled into the corner of the couch he had claimed. Melissa wanted to watch a romcom, and while the greenet didn't hate the genre by any means he certainly didn't feel like it tonight. The blonde girl was leaning on the opposite arm if the couch her legs sprawled on the rest of the cushions barely reaching Izuku on the other side. They were sent into a small argument then continued scrolling. In the end they managed to agree on a rewatch of Mulan. A classic that everyone loved. The older sibling ran off and quickly returned with blankets and a more comfortable pillow for the younger to hold onto. Their dad returned from the kitchen with snacks and he took one of the blankets settling down on the other couch at the end closest to his kids. Melissa opted for laying on the couch using her brothers legs as a pillow. He didn't mind. This was quite normal actually, and Izuku was happy to feel normal again after a while of just feeling off.

After the movie the teens bid a goodnight to their father who mussed their hair and hugged them then sent them off with his own goodnight. Izuku took a quick shower and they both got ready for bed changing into their pyjamas, opening their beds, and doing their normal before bed skin routines. Izuku had been skipping it lately but it felt nice to once again fall into it again. The paper mask on his face felt so refreshing. Sometimes they got caught up with their inventions but they made it a point to have a skin care routine, after all they had to stay the most good looking siblings on the island (which Melissa maintains they undoubtedly were). Before long Melissa was knocking on his bedroom door while also opening it at the same time and slipping in with her own paper mask already applied to her face and in a cozy red pj set. In this house for the siblings knocking wasn't to ask permission to enter, it was more of a warning to the other that they were coming in like it or not, be decent or face the consequences of endless teasing and another thing to hold above the others head in a fight. The blue eyed girl settled herself on the bed, legs crossed and pillow in her lap. Izuku quickly joined her, crawling onto the bed and over to the corner, legs stretched out in front of him. "So."

"So?"

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing….a lot." Melissa raised an eyebrow at her brother's response. "How do I explain it? I guess a lot of things just piled up."

"What things?"

"I don't know. I guess...things are boring. Inventing gives me something to do. Summer vacation means I have nothing to keep me busy that isn't inventing. And I don't like not having something to do." He looked down at his hands as he twiddled his thumbs and continued. "I'm bored, and I want to be a hero but i'm quirkless. My inventions are the only hope I have to helping people. Also….I've been….thinking."

"About?"

"My life I guess. I still can't remember much from when i was younger but that blond hair and those red eyes i see in my dreams still haunt me. I want to know what happened to my birth parents." This was odd. Izuku rarely expressed wanting to know anything about his biological family. He knew his mother was deceased and his father had given him up and honestly every other time Melissa or David asked Izuku said he wanted nothing to do with that life anymore, save for whoever that red eyed blonde was, and Izuku was never lying. His sister knew this ran deeper, something else triggered his thoughts on his birth parents. "What happened?"

"What do you mean? I've just been thinking about it."

"No you haven't."

"Yes i have. I thought about the red eyed person and one thing led to another. I went down a rabbit hole of thought. Kinda like tick tock. You start out in cosplay tick tock and before you know it you end up in crow tick tock and then you're outside in your backyard trying to make a crow friend because dammit you deserve shiny useless trinkets from bird friends." She rolled her eyes. "You can't change the subject on me that easy. I know it's something else. I know you." He sighed and hung his head mumbling something under his breath. The girl leaned in closer giving Izuku a look. He sighed and cleared his throat "someone said I didn't belong here and I was leeching off the Shield fortune and dad just adopted me as a charity case and that's all ill ever be." Melissa grit her teeth, she knew something had happened. Izuku always took the subject of being adopted negatively when anyone outside the three of them brought it up. "Who"

"That one kid who sits behind me in world history" the girl knew who he was talking about and made a mental note to kick the kids ass for this latter. "But anyway. He said that and a few other things along those lines that I can't remember right now. It had me thinking about it and other things. I know it's not true but I can't help it. And before i knew it was spiralling and throwing myself into my work to cope." He looked guilty. Almost ashamed. Melissa didn't like that look on him. "Brother. You know it isn't ever going to be true no matter what. And you know you can talk to me or dad whenever you need to right." It was more of a statement than a question but Izuku nodded anyway. "Yeah. I'm sorry."

"No need to be sorry Izu. We're here for you, that's just what families do." She reached over and hugged him. "But-" the familiar voice of their father cut them off "you're sisters right Izuku. We're here to listen and help with anything but you have to tell us so we can help you." The man walked over sitting at the edge of the bed. "And no matter what remember that we are a family. No matter what anyone says. And you are my son because I love you. You're not a charity case. When i first saw you I knew my late wife put you in my path for a reason and that you belonged with us. Don't you forget that ok." He leaned over hugging his kids as Izuku nodded "I won't. Thanks dad. Thanks sis." They both nodded. "Of course son. I love you both. Now go to bed. I have a meeting tomorrow and if im late im blaming you both and you'll both lose your workshop privileges for a week." He let them go and stood up once again messing up their hair. "Oh shit. Alright i'm going. Goodnight." Melissa planted a kiss on Izuku's forehead which he stuck his tongue out at and then placed another on her father's cheek then ran out of the room. Izuku waved and called a goodnight after her then gave his father a soft goodnight and thank you as the man smiled warmly at him and exited the room gently closing the door behind him. Izuku smiled pulling off the face mask, finishing his routine and settling into his bed. He loved his family and he wouldn't change them for the world. Maybe his birth mother also lead him to them somehow. He couldn't be sure, but he sure was happy he had them.
